My heart is going 1,000mph. Im so excited. Captioning sponsored by cbs this is the cbs evening news with scott pelley. Pelley good evening. There is only one confirmed case of ebola in this country tonight. The doctor being treated in a new york hospital. But there is a lot of debate over what to do with others considered at risk. Today the c. D. C. Put out new guidelines. They establish risk levels and say that those at highest risk should have their travel restricted and be isolated only if they have symptoms. That was not the case with a nurse who returned from treating ebola patients in sierra leone. New jersey quarantined her in a hospital tent against her will, but under pressure, they let her go home to maine today. Heres dr. Jon lapook. Reporter when kaci hickox was released from her quarantine, it ended a threeday odyssey that has become the latest example of an ebola policy being modified on the fly. In this case by the governors of new york and new jersey. On friday they announced mandatory quarantine for anybody who had interacted with ebola patients in west africa. And new jersey and new york are going to determine the standards of quarantine since the c. D. C. s guidance is continually changing. We need to set a standard for our two states. Reporter when she landed at newark airport, her temperature was taken and showed no fever. After several hours of questioning, it was taken again and registered at 101 degrees. Hickox feared it was a false reading from her forehead because she was flushed. She first complained about her treatment in an essay published saturday by the dallas morning news, writing that officials in newark appeared to be disorganized and barked questions at me as if i was a criminal. We reached hickox by telephone on sunday morning. She emailed us several photos showing the isolation tent, her bed and a portable toilet. She told us she felt fine, showed no fever and had tested negative for ebola. She complained her rights were being violated and told us, decisions are being made because of politics, and its my life thats being affected. She hasnt had any symptoms for 24 hours. Reporter today governor christie spoke about his decision. She was put in the hospital because she was running a high fever that was symptomatic. If you live in new jersey, well quarantine you in your home, thats always been our policy. If you live outside our state and youre symptomatic, were not letting you go on public transportation. It make no common sense. Reporter todays c. D. C. Guidelines defines high risk as someone with known exposure to the virus, for example, a Family Member who cared for somebody with ebola or someone with a needle stick. If that person has no symptom, the seed recommends daily monitoring for 21 days and restriction that prohibit travel by airplane, ship or longdistance bus or train. Pelley jon, there has been so much concern in this country, but when you add it all up, not many patients. Yeah, this is a good moment for perspective. In the united states, only two people have caught ebola from somebody else. Those are the two nurses who directly cared for mr. Duncan and were exposed to body fluids. Otherwise the 48 contacts of mr. Duncan all tested negative. All the people exposed to the nurses have been negative so far. And theres more good news, which is that the fiveyearold boy who visited west africa returned here, had a lowgrade fever, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital and has tested negative for the virus. Pelley jon, thank you very much. Decisions keep telling us their decisions about ebola are based on science, but there is also a dose of politics. Heres chip reid. Reporter campaigning for republican candidates today, Chris Christie defended his quarantine policy for medical workers returning from west africa. The fact is im not going to step away for a minute from no no protecting the people of our state and region. Reporter christie, a likely president ial candidate, shares a similar position for andrew cuomo, a democrat up for reelection next week who also may have his eye on the white house. At the end of the day, im the governor of the state of new york. My numberone job is to protect the people of the state of new york and do what i think is prudent. Reporter the white house says those mandatory quarantines are more about politics than good medical sense. Spokesman john earnest. These kinds of policies should be driven by science. Reporter but republicans say if thats true, why did the president name political lawyer ron klain as his ebola czar instead of a scientist . The Ebola Outbreak is worse. Reporter one week before election day, can disacross the country are trying to use ebola to their political advantage in ads and debates. Many republicans, including scott brown of new hampshire, are calling for a ban on travel from west africa and even for securing the mexican border. The clearest pathway to bring anything, whether its criminals, terrorists or disease, is through that southern border. Reporter democrats, including his opponent, jeanne shaheen, are fighting back. What we dont need is people fearmongerring about this issue. Reporter one independent liberal Group Released an ad criticizing republicans for cutting spending that they say could have led to an ebola vaccination. Scott, that ad is titled republican cuts kill, which shows just how tough the political battle over ebola has come. Pelley chip, thank you very much. The election is now eight days away. If the election was held today, our cbs news Battleground Tracker shows the republicans would take back control of the senate. The democrats now have a 5545 majority. We estimate the g. O. P. Would win six seats to control with the slimmest of margins, 51 to 49. Its a year for democrats. Nancy cordes tells us that even the chair of the powerful Senate Energy committee is trailing in the oilrich louisiana. Two, three. Reporter democrat Mary Landrieu comes from a big political family, so campaigning is in her blood. Her record is ten events in one day. She even hit a keg party recently and gave the wobble dance a go with a group of tailgaters. But its her poll numbers that are wobbly as landrieu seeks a fourth term in a state that has moved steadily to the right. President obama lost here by 17 points in 2012. President obama is not on this ballot. This is about who is going to represent louisiana for the next six years. Reporter according to the latest cbs estimates, landrieu leads her opponent bill cassidy by five points in a threeway race that includes a tea party candidate, but state rules call for a december runoff between the top two candidates if no one gets above 50 . And in a head fo head headtohead matchup, she trails cassidy by four points. How are you feeling about the race right now . Fantastic. Cassidy ties landrieu to the president at every turn. Shes already for the last six years made the u. S. Senate a rubberstamp for barack obama. Reporter so on the stump, landrieu has touted the money she steered to the state after Hurricane Katrina and the b. P. Oil spill. Cassidy claims shes overstating her influence. But hasnt she brought millions to the state after natural disasters . Our delegation brought millions to the state. Reporter outside groups are so sure this race is going to a runoff theyve already booked hotel rooms for their operatives through november and reserved millions of dollars worth of advertising time. And if control of the senate hangs on the outcome of this runoff, then louisiana will become, as one democrat put it, a political circus. Scott . Pelley sounds like a circus behind you there in new orleans, nancy. Thank you very much. Nancy will be a key part of our Election Night team as we bring you updates throughout the evening on Election Night and a onehour special with the latest returns analysis. The pain feels as fresh as it did back then. Nicole hockleys son dylan was killed in 2012. Since then there have been 37 School Shootings nationwide. Its like going back in time when you see error footage of children running from a school. Reporter hockley is in Washington State to promote a Ballot Initiative requiring firearm background checks, a trip planned before the marysville attack. Gun rights advocates say the marysville shooting is now being exploited ahead of the november election. Its just discouraging that it always is such a fight. It shouldnt be about a fight. Were trying to protect our kids. Reporter police still havent released a motive for the shooting and they say they may never know what provoked frybergs attack on his friends.
