Work pretty treacherous. And the parking lots, the sidewalks, i did a very ugh right outside of our own parking lot outside of the building and your own property may be the worse whatever youre finding the first step out your door, your walkway especially maybe if you shoveled yesterday. If you did the diligent thing, well, there is no snow to absorb that rain that came down, the temperatures have been hovering around the freezing mark, and thats where you may be really encountering some of the icy spots. But theyre on the roads too. Ben franklin bridge, got the hazy look, continuing to find some rain in the area, let me take you to storm scan3 right now, this is the wide view, and you can see, that weve got this big system, it is pulling away, but it is not out of here yet. Lets get little close near philadelphia, and you can see by the variety of colors, if you go to the north through new york, still dealing with the colder temperatures and snow weve got some mix in part of the area and some rain coming in to the south. But again some of these temperatures on the grounds and thats where it is really important, thats where youre finding the problem. Doylestown you are getting some freezing rain, around the trenton area, as well, you can be finding it even through south jersey, through atlantic, cumberland counties. Let me take to you some of the temperatures which are key, 32 in millville 33, philadelphia, 32 degrees in wilmington, 32 in trenton and it is below the freezing mark, 26 allentown and reading. This storm over performs because these temperatures really never warmed up and it got to snow longer, then it should have, it is at the freezing mark in mt. Holly three it, 29 in doylestown, 32 degrees in willow grove. Quakertown, where you are ever, i would be very, very careful, you can see our Winter Weather alerts, winter storm warning through the philadelphia area, and also to the south where you see dover, and atlantic, cumberland counties, freezing rain advisory, until 9 00 this morning. We expect to see some warming coming up after that. It is pretty quiet week, cold one, ill show you all of that just ahead. Nick snow. Carol, thank you. Of course the winter storm has left its mark across the delaware valley. Shovels out in full force as a clean up slowly began last night. Now the snow quickly covered roads, creating trecherous conditions, like what carol and i were speaking b this cab in center city philadelphia, fishtailed, down market street, so you can see it is very easy to slip and slide there are people walking as well seeing how slippery it can be as the snow changed over to freezing rain. Now, our eye on the storm coverage continues on kelly drive from snow to freezing rain, to just plane rain, residents are waking to up a wintery mess this morning. Kyw news radio 1060 is live with us with an update on conditions. Good morning to you, good to have you with us this morning whats it like out there . Good morning nicole. Good news and there is bad news the good news is it is not as frigid as it has been in the past several days, but the bad news is it is a mess. There is this dangerous slippery, slush, that has formed, because of this ice and rain combo and crews have been on the road for the past several hours putting down salt and as you can see some of the main roads have been treated but the side roads are still quite dangerous. On the sidewalks of course, many places are frozen solid. There is huge ice puddles and people have to sort of jump over them, in order to be safe. And back out here, live, as you can see this icy slush is dangerous, and there is actual sections where if you step down, your entire foot can sort of disappear in this slush. If youre not careful. So, when you start to clean off your cars this morning remember, that the snow is quite heavy and be careful and just sort of expect that as youre out trying to get moving. Live on kelly drive cherry gregg, kyw news radio for cbs3 Eyewitness News. All right cherry, thanks for the update. Not looking so hot out there. Thank you. Of course we are not the only ones dealing with a winter mess this weekend snow, ice sleet, extends from the northeast to the midwest, even in the south. Wendy gillette reports now from new york. Reporter slush covered the streets, in charleston, West Virginia saturday. In washington, d. C. , the winter storm brought play time in the snow. With patriotic backgrounds, in Madison County alabama, a jackknife tractortrailer summoned police as light snow began to fall. The storm is making driving treacherous, across a large chunk of the eastern half of the country. About 70 miles east of cleveland, on lake erie, no ones going anywhere. Lake michigan is more than half covered with ice the second year in a row that much of the great lakes have been frozen over. Just cool to see how the waves form, and it almost looks like mountains almost that you look across. It is pretty unique. On the hudson river in new york city the ice is starting to melt, now that record breaking low temperatures have thawed. Replaced by several inches of snow, falling saturday afternoon. Well, the cold weather is to blame for a water main break in philadelphias Port Richmond neighborhood. After hours of repairs service was restored to around 100 homes 30hundred block every tulip street. 8inch main snapped just after 9 00 yesterday morning. Water then poured into the basements of at least ten homes. This is a brutal time of year, you know, certainly the temperatures not helping the water temperature going to the mains is extremely cold, breaking many mains around the city and, you know, we ask for patience as we get out there make the repairs as quickly as we can. The red cross helped families dis place dollars by that water main break. Happening today the philadelphia suns associations holds their annual chinese new years parade. Flames tore through the emeralds ridge ants around 3 00 yesterday morning. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from the roof of the building. Despite battling the extreme cold. At that time, luckily, the winds have died down, and that was a contributing factor. Four units are damaged and there were no injuries. So that is some good news there. The cause of the fire is under investigation. We do have a sad update for you, story we first told but yesterday morning. House fire, one of those children called hero, escaped the flames. Steve langford from our sister station cbs2 in new york has the details. We look up. Young children, trapped on the third floor of this home, as the fire roars, their only hope, to jump. So they was waiving. So we like, yo, jump. You know what i mean . They aint jump. But the little sister, she threw her brother out. Darryl mayfield said he helped catch the little boy as he it up tonight safety. I felt the heat here. So i can just imagine like what they were going through. There are, in fact, two more children still left on the third floor in the middle of this inferno, six year old jada and sigh on just a year old. Blaze, kept blazing out everybody started going crazy yelling because the other kids was still knit house. She put her little brother out, she like disappeared back in to the fire. Perhaps out of fear, perhaps because she couldnt leave her baby brother behind. Both perished in the third floor bedroom, their mother had just left for the bus station to visit relatives down south witnesses say. They call that the bus station, she came back, and she freaked out like. The fire so powerful, the home now set to be demolished. We had no less than five people in the house, and i believe three were treated at the hospital of saint barn bus hospital for burn wounds and wounds associated with jumping out of the window, as well. That was my bedroom right there at the top right there in the front. Tara williams at the scene the morning after, because she and her sister had once lived in the same house. If you were trapped on the third floor in a fire in that house, what would it be like . I would be dead. Heart break for two little children, one of whoms last act was pushing her brother to safety, in orange, new jersey, Steve Langford cbs2 news. And there are just no words for a story like that. Wow. So so sad. Carol, lets get a check on that forecast. Ill tell you that weve got some snow. Dealing with still some rain in the area, so i just want everybody to be really, really careful when you step out the door, because that could be a problem, that could be one of your bigger problems. You get out on the roads and of course that is another issue. We saw anywhere between three to 7 inches of snow, and were continuing with the rain on top of ground thats been so frozen solid, for so long, and there is that layer of slush and snow and then this rain on top of that, and thats freezing, and that can be a major problem. Center city this morning, it is gloomy, it is gray, and were seeing some precipitation in the area. Lehigh valley, you pick up, reading, berks county, you pick up some snow, everybody got some snow out of the system a lot of the heaviest snow actually did come through south jersey. Now, this is a look right now as this thing pulls away, and you can see many areas are left with not much right now but rain, the mix and then the snow to the north. So depending on where you are, youre either watching some come down or waiting for the temperatures to rise enough that you will be able to get a little melting going on. Temperatures are so marginal though. This is the problem. And im sure as youve seen this winter you can have a day that well, we barely have seen a day thats above freezing, but even if you do get one sometimes ice just stays even so. This ground is cold, and so 33 degrees, is not enough to melt much. Weve got 32 in wilmington, 32 in millville, 34 down in wildwood, 35 degrees in atlantic city, 32 trenton we go to the north, it is 28 in the willow grove area, 30 in pottstown, so, 32 degrees in mt. Holly anything thats out there is still very capable of freezing. This is the one change, though, we did have a winter storm warning to the west through the lehigh valley, that sort every thing. You can see, there is nothing out there right now. But we continue with the winter storm warning until 9 00 for philadelphia, our immediate southern new jersey counties and in these three counties atlantic, cumberland, kent county, this is where there is freezing rain advisory this morning. The very, very careful there. In fact, i dont care where you are, be very, very careful. We saw amounts bear delaware, six and a half inches every snow, voorhees, in new jersey, 6 inches of snow levittown 5 inches, and in philadelphia, the biggest snowfall weve seen this year, 4. 5 inches. So not wasnt a foot of snow but it was a lot more than it should have been, this storm system never warmed up in time to see some of the changeover to the sleet and freezing rain early enough. We just snowed. So today we will be eventually drying out as we go through the midmorning time period. We start to dry out. Temperatures will be getting to around 40 degrees, if were lucky, couple of Degrees Higher than that, immediately though thereafter, the temperatures plunge again. Were going to be in the 20s for highs. By the time we get to monday, so our future weather pretty, pretty close to what this actually is, so it has got a better chance of being right the next time i stop this, which is at 10 00 oclock this morning, where were still looking at the possibility of some rain along the shore areas. Hopefully, these temperatures will start to creep up a little bit. But, with all of the slush all of the grounds thats been frozen, so long, just just take it easy any time you see anything that looks wet out there make the a sum sean it is frozen, by 1 00 this afternoon, should be getting sunshine to help with some of the shoveling out, there that and temperatures above the freezing mark. But again tonight will be dealing with a refreeze because anything that has melted and hasnt evaluate evaporated will be refreezing. So we get better conditions should be above freezing by the. Some temperatures as high as the 40s, we drop down again tonight, refreeze problem will probably and problem tomorrow morning. Thirtyfive in philadelphia today, in fact, you know, what really should be more like 40 degrees, in philly. Shore, 42, and the poconos 32 degrees for our temperatures this afternoon. Were going to be finding not much in the way of winds with the 40 degrees temperature 6 45, sun comes up, sets tonight getting later and later, almost 6 00 still be light but not setting. Temperature every 19 degrees tonight. Tomorrow, 25, but look at monday nights temperature. 7 degrees. At this point, though, nicole, the good news, even though it is cold next week, at this point were not putting any precipitation on that map. Aah for ones, right . Subject to change, of course. Of course, all right, carol, thanks for the update. We do appreciate it. 6 18 lets check on the roads with ann evans. Ann, i can tell you my commute into work this morning really bad. It was really bad. And what is even worse are parking lots, and overpasses, and under passes, and onramps and offramps. So drive very carefully this morning. So much to tell you traffic wise today. We experienced overnight people as they step out the door this morning or start to think about driving someplace youll definitely find that theyre not good. Obviously we saw a lot of snow yesterday. Generally, between three and 7 inches of snow in parts of the area, seven at the very high ends, but through philadelphia, we pick up 4. 8 inches of snow yesterday. That was the most snow weve seen this winter. Notice the clouds, theyre low, seeing some rain, and light rain through philadelphia, the temperatures, 34 in center city philadelphia, but the grounds is frozen, and there is icing just about every place, ann evans has been talking about it, she will continue to do that this morning through traffic. Now, out in reading see the snow that theyve got there. It is winter wonderland, time for that to go somewhere else. Storm scan3 notice, we continue with some rain showers. Now, just because it looks green there thats fine. Yes, it is coming down. The air aloft is warm enough, that were transitioning out of the snow phase and even in many locations out of the mix phase. But the rain comes down, and the ground, at the surface remains colds in a lot of locations, then head on in, little more notice trenton getting freezing rain at this point, also finding spots of t even though it doesnt show up there, it is coming down as freezing rain, you can still be finding these temperatures or untreated surfaces, and sometimes the treated surfaces where you really have to pay such close attention. Thirtythree in philadelphia, 32 in millville, 32 degrees in trenton, wilmington you go north of the city youve got temperatures that are at or above below the freezing mark, and in some cases above the freezing mark like northeast philly at 35 degrees. But still so close. Now, notice this. Our Winter Weather alerts. We have in the philadelphia area, we continue with that winter storm warning and areas south of that, atlantic county, cumberland county, kent county, thats where there is freezing rain advisory until 9 00 this morning. Those temperatures down there are right around the freezing mark the rain is coming down, and youre going to be slipping and sliding. Temperatures, i hope, get to 40 degrees today. We will be finding some clouds, and i love to see couple every sunday breaks to help do little melting out there before we plunge right back into the deep freeze, starting tomorrow. So well talk about all of that coming up. Nicole . Carol, thank you. Hey, it was scenes like this throughout the day in delaware valley. Good morning to you cherry. Reporter good morning, nicole. I always like to start with a little good news, so the good news is that it is not as cold as it has been in the past few days. But, the bad news is, it is a mess. If you look around, i mean, there are these big mounds of ice, there is solid ice sheets of ice on the sidewalks. This snow and rain combo has formed these huge slushy conditions when you are waking along, it is quite dangerous, and crews have been on the road since last night and most of the main streets have been treated the sidewalks on the other hand are still sheets of ice with big icy puddles near curves. At the ends of each street, and which makes walking extremely tough i spoke with bill, he just got off work, and hell tell you what hes been seeing. Frozen, but i imagine do okay ya. And how are the driving conditions thus far . Very treacherous. Last night was very treacherous, yes. Do you have take your time.
