While he was doing that, at the very moment he was meeting on wall street, mr. Berlusconi held a meeting with his on parliamentarians, in which he accused the left of criminal. The concession to russia, document does not point blame for the gas attacks that killed hundreds of people. He has been joined in custody by several other members of the party, including parliamentary deputies. It is the most significant crackdown on a Political Party in greece in recent history. Connected to been several racist attacks, as well as to the recent murder of an antifascist hiphop musician. Members of the general public seem glad about the police crackdown. Very good. At least it is something that the arrest has taken place. Hopefully, more people will start thinking. Golden dawn holds 18 seats in parliament. According to opinion polls, it theys support among 12 of greek population. We turn to germany now, where the green party is struggling to figure out what went wrong in the recent election after taking just eight. 4 of the vote. Leaders said they would step down to make way for new faces. Claudio will not be standing for reelection as her parties cochair, but after years at the top she was greeted by warm applause. Delegates were harder on others. Candidates faced a barrage of criticism. The election pledge to raise taxes according to the state alienated voters. A party leader took responsibility for the poor performance, but wants to stand for reelection. He says they should keep their Coalition Options open. Independence can mean a with the party. We have to accept the responsibility. For now, conservatives are the only other potential partnership. They have ruled out working with the left party. But the future of the green party itself is a much harder topic of discussion. At issue, should they refocus on ecological issues whether rather than social ones . We are joined by Political Correspondent john barrick. Thanks for being with us. It seems that the greens are planning for a drastic overhaul. Was the loss that dramatic . On the face, 8. 5 for a small party is not bad, it is quite respectable. But over the last two years, they have been steadily losing support. They were hoping for a two digit result in last sundays election. They were hoping to form a Coalition Government with the social democrats. They fell far short of that and described themselves as a major defeat. How can this loss of support be explained . Well, the green party has really lost, to some extent, its profile. It has been the ecological party, as the name suggest, and the party of nuclear phaseout. Those issues have become mainstream issues in german politics. The party cannot look for a new and seized upon a tax reform, including tax hikes for upper wage earners. The major problem is that we and 1980sin the 1970s the party was largely supported by students and protesters on the left wing of party politics. The typical green voter today is somebody from an upper income household in an urban district. So, those are not the sort of people who are going to vote for that kind of tax reform. That was a disaster and is obviously why the main candidate also immediately after the result resigned. Give us an idea of the kind of direction the party might take now. This is a generation change in the party. The younger greens i think are much more pragmatic, as i suggest did. I think they will probably have to move the party, inevitably, defined more clearly, and move it back into the center of german politics. They need to recognize that many of their supporters, in fact, have very conservative values and position themselves with the Democratic Party within parliament. Thank you for those insights. Ive traveled to istanbul to meet this group of entertainers. Is an artisticce form of rebellion against the government. It has become a nationwide soundtrack of protest. They call themselves songs of solidarity. This is a last rehearsal before a major summer concert. I am here to get a role get a look at the role they play in the protest movement and why this band of musicians opposes the government. 26yearold amir has been a member of the group for years and is considered one of the best dancers. He is vehemently opposed to the government and dedicated to encouraging dissent. They are really excited. It is not just a concert for them. They are going to feel the resistance and the protest. And that is the strong suit. Is a powerful vocal rejection of the conservative islam is government. The group itself is a colorful of cultures mix with one practicing muslim. He takes me to the place that ,ecame worldfamous this summer a park in the heart of the stumble. It is empty this evening, but a few months ago, it was the site of violent confrontation between Security Forces and thousands of protesters. Lives were lost and thousands were injured. June, there were thousands of people. But the police broke apart and now there is all must no one. Whenever there is a protest clodd here, the park is by the police. So, it is really the police awesome art right now. Park right now. See only comes here after dark. Hisnext day i visit apartment. His roommate is a singer with the group. Both were in the park when the protest movement was in its infancy. Fidel tries to explain why he has taken to the streets in protest. He says the government is constantly outlying things like abortion and alcohol. It wants to force women to have at least three children. No one was doing anything about it so he joined the demonstrators. He says he has become more careful since the summer. At the time, he was protesting every day, but now he is afraid of the police with Water Cannons and tear gas. Five demonstrators have been killed so far. Feels he ise abandoning demonstrators to fend for themselves. In the end, what he wants most is to live in peace. Later, i meet with another band member. The 24yearold plays electric guitar and studies on key in her free time. It is easy to see by her headscarf that she is a practicing muslim. I wonder what has brought her to protest the conservative islamist government. This regime sells itself as the arbiter of political islam, but nothing could be further from the truth. This government is neoliberal status quo. He in other words, cold, hard capitalism. I am not saying they would favor socialist policies, but as a muslim, i am ashamed to see the poor getting poorer and the rich getting richer. That goes against our religious beliefs. Her ideology upsets just about everyone. Muslims ostracize her because she takes the stage with homosexuals. But she also ruffled feathers because she wears a headscarf. Was awful. Some people insulted me out right. Others greeted me with open arms as if they were in charge and i was just a guest. I tend to support the protest movement via facebook and through my music. By that, she means the protest songs of the group. This evening, they will take the stage in what is billed as their biggest concert of the summer. Be heavenly. People should believe in themselves again. It is wonderful to be united with so many supporters of the protest and hear the music. An estimated 4000 fans attend. This singer fires up the crowd, telling them protest our proof protest ourthe proof they can achieve velocity achieve the lofty goal of equality and solidarity. They chant. It is a special evening for the musicians and concert goers alike. What they dont know is that another demonstrator was killed during clashes with police. The violence took place several hundred kilometers from the stumble. The next day, the tension is palpable on the streets of istanbul. Another major illegal demonstration is scheduled. The police are out in force. Many of the band members have left the city for a few days. The demonstrators have valid to retake the park. Special forces will do everything in their power to keep that from happening. The protest start up peacefully, despite the first scent of tear gas. Suddenly, violence erupts. Tear gas stings the as and burns the skin. Stings the eyes and burns the skin. This woman has lost track of her friend in the tom old. In the tumult. I have lost six of my friends. Many injuries are reported in dozens are arrested. The demonstrators have failed in their attempt to retake the park. Security forces maintain control. Much of the protest movement is rooted in the students attending the university and a stumble. That includes this i. T. Specialist. These days, her studies have taken a backseat to the demonstrations. The ongoing discuss Political Movement and what they can do to help. I cannot just pick up my guitar after a demonstrator is killed. I dont even want to play sad songs. I would rather take to the streets and demonstrate, but our music plays an Important Role among the people, so we have to keep going. He also has been deeply moved by the events of the past few days. He has taken coverage from them. He is ready to join the protest movement again. I will try my best to continue the protest. On this day, there are no major confrontations, but the Police Presence is overwhelming. So much has happened over the past few days. Band has fired up the demonstrators with a summer concert, and he has conquered his own inner fears, but the era of renewed violence remains. A
