Good evening. The former french president , Nicolas Sarkozy has taken to the air waves this evening, denying he has broken any laws. In what was his first major broadcast since losing the 2012 election, sarkozy blamed what he called political interference in the judiciary. When quizzed by investigators for 15 hours used over charges he used his influence in office to interfere in the proceedings of another case in which he is impretty emply indicated. He was very determine, very steely, occasionally a flash of anger you could see there across his face, and really combative as though he wasnt going to accept any of this and that he would continue to fight on. He made quite a lot also not just of this unprecedented detention as you said, the first time that a french president has been pulled into custody and questioned by magistrates, being held for 15 hours and being given a rendezvous with judges at 2 00 in the morning. He talked a lot about that, but also about wiretapping, about the recording of conversations between himself and his lawyer. Albeit that was happening in the context of a judicial inquiry, but nonetheless, the imprecision that he sought to give was, the impression he sought to give was this could happen to anybody. Across the board, what is your private conversations with your doctor were being recorded or snapped on . That was very key to the messaging of tonight, to say i am a french citizen like you, to kind of come back into the fray not exactly as an ordinary person, but certainly as a citizen like anyone else. I think it is important to counter the narrative that has been built up around sarkozy in the last two years since he was defeated in that president ial election, this narrative that his opponents have built up around him that he has now become a man of money. He gets these lucrative speaking engagements around the world like tony blair does, and he is interested in money basically. I think this was a way for him to try to show himself to be a french citizen like others. But as you said, he isnt like others. He is a former french president , and there had been talk about him being a president again after the 2017 president ial elections. Does that now look like that hope is being torpedoed by this late set back . How far this on investigation goes. Ere are other legal woes hanging over him, Affairs Dating back to when he was in previous rightwing governments. But this one, the allegation at he got money or funding from the libyan dictator, chad , gause if i gaddafi, that seemed to have spawned a series of threats to his comeback. That was part of a broader general approach. You could hear in the tone of the reactions on the right, people were not showing a very strong commitment to Nicolas Sarkozy this afternoon. So i think we can expect him to have to put up quite a battle both for his Party Leadership and to become a candidate for that 2017 president ial election, if of course the judicial side of things doesnt derail him before that in the next three years. Do you think the killing of that palestinian boy has possibly silenced to a certain extent the more hardline israeli politicians who were calling for revenge in the form of air strikes or military action on the ground. Do you think that changes anything at all . I think you have a point there. They are both biblical, an eye for anee. We still dont know enough about who killed the young palestinian, but it does take the steam out of a major retaliation. And by the way, netanyahu doesnt seem eager for a retaliation.
