There are nine people who are murdered inside the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church here in charleston last night. Cynthia herd, 54. Manager of one of the busiest branches in the Charleston County Public Library system where she worked for 31 years. The lie rather will be renamed in her honor. Reverend Daniel Simmons sr. Died in the operating room. He was 74. Retired in 2005 as Charleston County director of the Community Development Block Grant Program which funds Affordable Housing and local development. She was a mother of four. Tawanza sanders, 26. He got a degree from the division of business administration. Myron thompson, 59, the wife of reverend anthony thompson, a nearby church in charleston. A mom to three children, a speech pathologist and coach for a Girls Track Team team outside charleston. Susie jackson was 87, at church with her sister who also died at the scene who was 70 years old. Finally, reverend pinckney, the pastor, first yore darrened at age 18 and was elected to the South Carolina house of representatives just five years later. Age 27, he became the youngest member of the state senate. His seat in that chamber covered in black, a cloth of mourning today. Pinckney described by a colleague as the moral conscience of the state senate helped build support for a bill mandating body cameras for his officer. Last month he delivered an impassioned speech on the senate floor. When we were able to see the video, and we were able to see the gunshots, and when we saw him fall to the ground and when we saw the Police Officer come and handcuff him on the ground, without even trying to resuscitate him, without even seeing if he was really alive, without calling an ambulance, without calling for help, and to see him die face down in the ground as if he were our hearts go out to the scott family. Our hearts go out to the flagler family because the lord teaches us to love all and we pray that, over time, that justice be done. Body camera bill was signed into law last week. All nine victims were attending a bible study on a wednesday night at the church. One of the oldest black churches in the south, the oldest south of baltimore known locally as mother emanuel. According to police the alleged shooter entered the church around 9 00 p. M. Attending the prayer meeting for almost an hour before opening fire. Sylvia johnson, reverend pinckneys cousin described what she was told about how it unfolded. From my understanding the suspect came to the church and he asks for the pastor, wheres the pastor. They showed him where the pastor was. He sat next to my cousin, reverend pinckney, for throughout the entire bible study. According to the charlton post and courier, a female survivor told family members the gunman addressed her direct telling her he was letting her live so she could tell everyone else what happened. Johnson said she got a chance to speak with one of the survivors. She said that he had reloaded five different times and her son was trying to talk him out of doing that act of killing people and he just said i have to do it. He said, you rape our women and you taking over our country and you have to go. Joining me now from columbia sorry. Joining me, chris jansing, my colleague. What do we know about the man who is suspected or alleged to have done this . 21 years old. Hes walking in to the Mother Emanuel Church. He looks like nothing. Turns out there was something very deep and serious going on. Obviously based on the last few seconds before he opened fire, a deep hatred, certainly said some racially charged things. And was known to police a little bit. Had some very lowlevel runins with the law on drugs and the question really is for investigators now as they bring him back to this city and they want to look deeper into it, what everybody wants to know i spent most of my night last night talking to the community, why. Theres no good reason for that. Right . But what was the motivation. How did this happen. When we heard last night the initial details start to come through, a shooting in a black church, suspect is white. First thing you start to think is, okay, what is his motivation. As we learn more about this individual, dylann roof, pictures of him with the flag of the apartheid flag, the license plate of the Confederate States of america. Interviews emerging from people that knew him that frankly say he was racist. He wanted to restart the civil war. He was obsessed with that. The more details again, this is an alleged gunman at this point. The more you learn the more it looks like the hate crime that it was described as the mayor last night. You go into a church where theyre having a bible study. You sit there for an hour. This is a welcoming place. He came in and asked for the pass store. He was escorted to the chair next to the pass store because he was a newcomer. Pastor wanted him to feel welcome. He sat and looked in the hours for an hour. At the end of that open fire and killed in close range an 87yearold woman who had been sitting in bible study. Chilling. Absolutely. We dont know how many shots were fired but we know it wasnt a lot. We know it was at close range. We know that he first shot two people and then said that he was trying to be encouraged to stop shooting and he wouldnt, he said he had to do it. This is somebody who went in there obviously with a plan. We dont know what was going through his mind for that hour but the idea of him being in there, looking them in the eye, is almost unbearable. One more point. I just came from there. Ive been talking to people over the last almost 24 hours now. To a person, chris, they say to me violence cannot be answered with violence. I just spoke to somebody whos on the board of that chunk who knows all nine of these people who was very close to the pastor who is related through marriage to another one of the victims and he said to me, tomorrow forgiveness. Lot of people here who are working through a lot of emotions to get to there. A sort of remarkable scene of grace to be able to get there that quickly after the atrocity committed here. Joining me now from columbia, South Carolina now, reverend steven singleton, former pastor of Mother Emanuel Church. Pastor, my condolences. It is no small comfort but i am so sorry for the loss that your former church and your community is experiencing. How are you feeling today . Im doing okay. Were getting through it. I just came back from charleston. Spoke to a lot of people and receiving a lot of phone calls and its been very, very encouraging and were going to get through it. Thats what we do. We persevere. Can you talk a little bit about this church, how central it was, not just to its parishioners but to all of charleston, all of the black south, frankly, and what it means as a place, what its resonance was as a place of worship and as of a place of social struggle . Mother emanuel is a cornerstone, a well known landmark in the city of charleston. It is the third oldest congregation in the african methodist episcopal church. The early years of that congregation also included denmark visi who attempted to plan an insurrection and flee the slaves. That was put down. The church was in a different location at that time. After the civil war they built the structure that we see now as a statement to the world that people of color can do things that other people can do. Its a majestic structure. It is very impressive from its rustic Hardwood Floors to the imported pipe organ. They take a lot of pride in that structure, take a lot of pride in the history of that congregation. And it has been a hub for advocacy, for africanamericans in South Carolina. Dr. King spoke at that church during civil rights movement. It was a place of planning the strategies when they were fighting for their rights. And because of this history and this legacy, it will survive, it will live on, and it will thrive in the future. Reverend pinckney weve heard so much, he among the dead, someone who is almost something of a prodigy. A rising star. His first church at 18. Youngest person ever elected to the state legislature. But also ever testimony ive ever heard from talking to folks here today, how soft spoken, how quiet, how humble he was for someone who had so many accolades, such obvious charisma at such a young age. Yeah. The way i describe reverend pinckney though is a statesman. He was soft spoken. He was humble. But he took his business very, very seriously. He had that deep voice and when he spoke to you, you knew he meant business. He was serious. He was always a servant of the people. As a servant of god. I think he understood that you cant serve god unless you serve people. I remember when he was elected to to the legislature at such a young age, there were a lot of nay sayers who didnt believe he would win. He proved them wrong. A few years later he went to the state senate. He was always in public service. He will be deeply missed. And as i shared earlier with some other people, he was also a role model. I dont want us to overlook the fact that he was an africanamerican family man. We need role models like him. It is a great loss on so many levels and we just praying for the family and praying for that legacy to live on. How do you, reverend, understand what happened in that church last night . Its wednesday night bible study. Because of the historical significance of that church, visitors would pop in all the time. When i pastored there, we had visitors from all over the world. Tourists who would come to charleston and make it a point to come to mother emanuel. So when strangers walked in, it was not unusual. Arms were opened. They didnt suspect anything because there were people who popped in just to observe, just to see what was going on, just to see what was going on and what it was about. I suspect thats what they thought this young man was doing. He was sitting next to the pastor, i understand, during the lesson. After the lesson is over, theres a prayer session where we used to pray for the world, pray for world leaders, pray for the community. And from what im hearing it was kind of at that point in the service when this young man decided to unfold his point. Would it be strange for a young white man to show up at mother emanuel . Not at all. We had people of all races. We i can remember one particular sunday we had a woman from china, a man from germany, and a woman from holland. And it was just that kind of just that kind of congregation, that location, the historical significance. So a young white male wouldnt be unusual. Ive gone to that church and they were sitting on the steps and because its not too far from the college of charleston. Students would come and sit on the steps and just kind of watch the traffic go by. So, no, nothing would have been out of place with a stranger walking in and seemingly meant no harm. All right. Reverend singleton, thank you very much. Really appreciate you making time tonight. Okay. Thank you. Ahead, president obama had some sharp and mournful words about the tragedy here in charleston today. Also a little more about the racial politics of the state that seems to have berthed this tragedy. Acts like this had no place in our country and no place in a civilized society. I take prilosec otc each morning for my frequent heartburn. Because it gives me. Zero heartburn prilosec otc. Earlier today, a cbs news news correspondent, an unofficial white house Record Keeper sent the following tweet by my count, this will be at least the 14th time president obama has made a statement on a shooting attack. Ive had to make statements like this too many times. Communities like this have had to endure tragedies like this too many times. At some point we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of Mass Violence does not happen in other advanced countries. It doesnt happen in other places with this kind of frequency. And it is in our power to do something about it. I say that recognizing the politics in this town. Foreclose a lot of those avenues right now. But it would be wrong for us not to acknowledge it. The president is exactly right. The country is so much more violent than ever other country in the developed world, especially when it comes to gun violence. Of all the nations in the oecd, only chile even comes close to the gun related murder rate here in the u. S. Were the big red bar there. According to the washington post, americans are 20 times as likely to be killed by a gun as someone from another developed country. As a nation, as a democracy, this is a path that weve chosen. This is a crime that has reached into the heart of that community. The department of justice has opened a hate Crime Investigation into this shooting incident. The fbi, atf, u. S. Marshal service, Civil Rights Division and u. S. Attorneys office are working closely with our state and local partners and we stand ready to offer every resource, every means and every tool that we possess. The justice departments opened a hate Crimes Investigation into the charleston massacre at a prayer vigil today. Reverend dr. Charles watkins had another characterization for the atrocity. We gather to offer our condolences and to pray with and for the families of the friends, colleagues and family members killed in a senseless tragic episode of domestic terrorism. This of course not the first time weve seen an act of domestic terrorism against africanamerican house of worship. It is also a continuation of attacks upon black churches that occurred throughout the history of this nation. Joining me now, civil rights activist Kevin Alexander gray, coeditor of killing trayvon. Sorry to be here under these circumstances. What do you think about that term everybody is using which strikes me as a fairly accurate one given the circumstances given the reporting weve heard that he literally said to someone im letting you go so you will tell people what happened, that this was domestic terrorism. Sometimes the word terrorism is overused. Maybe we just ought to call a crime, that he committed murder and we ought to charge him for murder. This idea that were going to put somebody in jail for 100 years and add on an extra 50 years, just have one standard charge him for murder, we dont need to be expanding this idea of a war on terrorism. No question it was a heinous act. But the idea that we use this term terrorism so freely, unless were going to talk about the structure of the White Supremacy in this country that keep people unstable, keep people movable, keep people as second class citizens i just think that the term is overused at this point in time. It is interesting to hear you say that. Ive seen this frustration, this anger from so many people that in the case of boston, for instance, which we used the term terrorism there as people are trying to terrorize people, that committed murder, that term is used. When Lindsey Graham is asked on the view about the motivation, take a listen. I cant explain this. I dont know what would make a young man at 21 get so sick and twisted to kill nine people in a church. Do you feel like it is a hate crime or do you think it is more mentally disturbed . Probably both. One probably precludes the other. Theyre real people out there organized to kill people and religion and based on race. This guys just whacked out. But it is 2015. There are people out there looking for christians to kill them. This is a meantime we live in. I mean it just does seem that we have now again, this is an alleged this man is alleged to commit this crime. We are reporting that indicates but as each bit indicates the picture of the white supremacist states, the flags, the Confederate States of america license plate im from South Carolina. This state is the ideological home of sprite supremacy in this country. On our state house grounds we have memorials to confederal heroes. We have streets, roads, bridges, schools, buildings named after were on calhoun street. They build the statue of calhoun so fry so that the freed slaves wouldnt tear it down. The Tourism Industry in this city is based on slavery. That young man grew up in a state that reveres its confederate history. It reveres the fact that the first shots of the civil war were fired from this city. It reveres the fact that the citadel right across town was built to crush slave rebellions. That man was born and lived in the most conservative county in the state that if you go to places where you will see Confederate Flags. They believe this is a white mans country. This is not new. If you want to talk about the ideology of White Supremacy is tichl and how its kept people down from generations and generations, and locked them out of progress, sure we can apply terrorism. But the way it is used now, muslims are terrorists. Latino people when you mention them, theyre illegal immigrants. Blacks are thugs. And most of the time when it comes to young or old white men who are troubled, theyre mentally ill. The term is so overused. It is just as meaningless as the term racism in the context of america. Kevin alexander gray, it is good to see you again. It is good to see you. Still ahead, the incredible history of Mother Emanuel Church which you got a taste of at the top of the show. Well be right back. Every man on this earth has a responsibility to leave some evidence that we live here and that we serve here around that we work here. Senator pinckney, in his years of service in the house, and the senate, as a pastor and as a Community Leader and as a friend leaves much evidence. Ough, but ive managed. But managing my symptoms was all i was doing. And ive already said it, but ill say it again. Our calling is not just within the walls of the congregation. But we are part of the life and community in which our congregation resides. To really understand the meaning of last nights massacre in South Carolina, it is important to understand the history of the church where it happened. Built in 1891, Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded by worshippers looking to escape White Supremacy in 1816. In 1822 one of the churchs founders, a man by the name of denmark vessey masterminded the largest slave revolt in history. In a documentary, members of the church concluded the reverend murdered last night talked about that veiled insurrection and what happened after. The participants in the rebellion met an emanuel. So that rebellion though led by Denmark Vesey was basically an ame rebellion. Because of that, South Carolina created the citadel. The guns were pointed in the direction of where the members of mother emanuel lived, just in case there was another insurrection, the state was ready. Not long after that, vesey and others were burned to death. The church was formally reorganized during the civil war under the name emanuel. Churchs tradition fighting for civil rights continued into the 20th century. Reverend pinckney was an advocate for body cameras for Police Officers. They endured against the efforts of white supremacist to destroy it. Even if you murder its congregates and burn the structure to the ground it will still endure. Joining me now, member of the congregation. My condolences. Thank you very much. You have gone to this church your whole life. Born and reared in this church and my family were probably some of the founding members of this church. We helped build this church. Ive heard stories of the ladies going around with the bricks in their apron as the masons build this church. So for me, this church is a part of my family, part of our history. This structure is built the structure we are looking at is built in the wake of a war. In right as sort of reconstruction is kind of falling apart essentially. It is physically an embodiment of black freedom and black liberation at a moment when South Carolinas falling back into the clutches of tyranny. Yes. But i think right now id like to talk about right now our church is going through a period of mourning. I knew all the people who were murdered there and just as we have survived hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, our church being burned down, well survive this. For us it is a time to mourn and to bury our dead. It is a time for us to pray and prepare for our future. So that our church can continue to be resilient and be the lifeblood and a contribution to the city and to the state and to this country. How do you make sense of what happened last night . I cant make sense. But i do know that we have to be able to heal before we can move forward and a part of healing is forgiving. I learned very early on that if someone harms you, or hates you and hate back, then you lose. Thats a teaching principle in our church. It is a principle that most of us have lived by. So right now, our church is going through a healing period, a period where we want to bury our dead in peace, a period where we have to forgive in order for us to move on and make sure that our children have the benefits of this church which has been an pillar to this community, this state and our country. What is wednesday night bible study like at the at a. M. E. . Small, intimate. My mother whos very old generally goes to every bible study. Fortunately this time she was away so she missed it. But all the people that were in that bible study is a part of emanuels family and a part of the fabric of this city and they will be missed greatly. Our minister, clemente, more than a pastor and a senator to me. He was a friend, a dear friend. We collaborated often. Him as a senator, me as a city council member. We would talk about issues between the state and the city. But wed talk more about our church and its evolution. Our pastor was a builder. Over the last five years weve been able to complete three structures bringing tens of thousands of dollars into our coffers and we need to complete our elevator to make sure the elderly can enjoy our beautiful sanctuary and weve got to complete our sanctuary as well. Something tells me theres going to be a lot of theres a lot of love being directed your way, a lot of prayers and i think people will show their support as this continues. Again, my condolences. One of the photos weve all seen which i just mentioned before of the alleged shooter is comes from his own facebook page. Dylann roof sitting on a car with three Confederate Flags. Today a long, painful history of the Confederate Flag continues flying on the state house grounds in columbia today just like every other day. Today that flag is getting plenty of attention. While the u. S. Flag and the South Carolina state flag have been lowered to halfstaff atop of the state house, the Confederate Flag flying on those grounds still flies at full staff. Not sure it makes much difference that it flies today, that it flies at all on the state house grounds is of course why it is so contentious. As a topic of debate when governor nikki haley was running for election last year. The Confederate Flag is a very sensitive issue. What i can tell you is over the last 3 1 2 years i spend a lot of my days on the phones with ceos and recruiting jobs to this state. I can honestly say i have not had one conversation with a single ceo about the Confederate Flag. We really kind of fishgsed all that when you elected the first indianamerican female governor. When we appointed the first africanamerican u. S. Senator. That sent a huge message. Joining me now, congressman mark sanford of South Carolina, former governor of the state. It is good to have you here. Pleasure. I just cant but think of how awful it must be if youre someone in mourning in that church with that history and youre hearing all this rhetoric about how were coming together and were healing, were united. United south carolinians. How can you make sense of your state actually fully embracing you and seeing you in this moment of grief when that flag is flying on those grounds . What id say, as with any other political compromise, it will be imperfect. So if you go back in time, what youd find is a guy named john rainy, a guy named lonnie randolph. Lonnie randolph was head of the naacp. They worked together with the Business Community and Business Community and Church Community saying how do we take it off the state house which is where it was at the time. No, i know. And they put up an africanamerican memorial. They put it on the grounds. It was imperfect. So i think it easy from afar. Bible says worry about the log in your own eye before you worry about the splinter in somebody elses to say why didnt you guys get it right or more right. I think that was the best it could be done at the time. It does not make it a perfect political solution. This is to many people a symbol of tyranny, a symbol of White Supremacy, it is a symbol of domination. It is. But again, to another population in the state it is a symbol of heritage, symbol of state rights, symbol of my great, great grandfather died in some battle in manassas or bull run or who knows where. But in this case, lets be clear. In this case if the alleged murderer is the person he is, the original meaning of that symbol and what he did wasnt on accidentally adjacent. Theyre no more adjacent to me or you than they are to so many people walking calhoun street right now. Thats my point. The point is theres a lot of heritage here. We go back to the 1600 and 1700s and you wish you could erase a lot of things in history. The reality is you cant. What you can do is what you can do. When i was governor, i was the first guy to bring in africanamerican chief of staff. I was the first guy to appoint an africanamerican guy on the control board. I appointed the most africanamericans on the cabinet. You do what you could do. In 2008 people were talking about your vp office, you said youre not going to spend your chit cal capital. Of course, im going to work on my agenda, work on people. But it is the resistance that keeps that flag rooted there that people are looking around. People i talk to here say there is a connection between what happened in that church and whatever that thing is that people feel thats keeping that flag rooted in that soil. I would respectfully say i disagree. Because you look across the state. This gentleman hes not a gentleman this devilish creature was an outlier. Anybody who gets in their car and drives 100 miles down to the coast, goes to a bible study, studies for an hour, then shoots everybody in the room is deranged, diabolical, go down the list. Are there problems in our state as there are inner in ostate or community out there that need continued work . Absolutely. But what i just saw at the Church Service at 7 00 was reverend davis gave a great address. Eulogy, if you will, to what had happened, talking about the book of job and how we can all learn from it. Can you see that flag coming down in your lifetime . Are your grandchildren are your grandkids going to be in some future iteration standing here with some future iteration of news man having this conversation about that symbol flying over that State Capitol . That i dont know. What do you want to see happen . What i want to see in the first 24 hours is appropriate mourning of prominent people who i served with for eight years in my life who did a great job representing the low country of South Carolina and eight other victims. I want to see appropriate memorial to the lives that they lived. I want to see reflection as a community. People Holding Hands as they were as a church saying what can we do within our sphere of influence, within our neighbor within our neighbor to make a difference in race relations. If we do that, there will have been some good that came out of this tragedy. I would submit that congressman mark sanford, community in shock, anger and mourning tonight after the murder of nine people at Mother Emanuel Church here in charleston, South Carolina, including the churchs pastor. Two people who knew him well will join me next. When it comes to good nutrition. Im no expert. That would be my daughter hi dad. Shes a dietitian. This is a church that was burned to the ground because its worshippers worked to end slavery. When there were laws banning all black church gatherings, they conducted services in secret. When there was a Nonviolent Movement to bring our country closer in line with our highest ideals, some of our brightest leaders spoke and led marches from this churchs steps. The president earlier today emphasizing the attack was also an attack on a vitally important site in americans history. You both knew reverend pinckney, pastor of the ame, one of the nine murdered last night. You were close to the pastor. Yes. Ive served with him in the South Carolina senate for last 15 years. We were both younger men once upon a time. He was my colleague. He was my friend. He was my brother in christ. He was a man that proclaimed the good news of the gospel of jesus christ and he lived his life that way. What are you thinking today about what happened here last night . Ive been asking everyone here how you make sense of this. There are people who are watching from outside, making sense of it. Theres more details coming out about the alleged killer. How do you see it . Evil is evil. We saw his face. It pierced our hearts today. It puts a cloud over the charleston area, also over our nation. Weve got some vibes and we need to come together as a people. We need to drift towards one another instead of further away. Senator pinckney and i are different parties. But we found Common Ground on things we disagreed on. When we disagreed quietly. When we agreed, we agreed publicly and we moved our state along a little bit better than maybe could have happened otherwise. He was a good man and hes going to be missed. You cant help but feel that the timing of this from the killers perspective wasnt an accident. There are quotes of him saying he wanted another trayvon martin, he wanted to restart the race war, that theres been this very fraught conversation in this country about racial equality and some people today were make being the historical analogy of the bombing of the four little girls in birmingham. Do you see this as that . No. I dont see it because i believe the climate and the time is different. The impact of it is very similar but the timing is different. What occurred today, i tell you, had all of us numb for a period of time. But what weve witnessed i think helps us to realize how weve grown as a nation. No question that weve got a ways to go. But when you look at the idea of what Law Enforcement did, how the mayor stepped up and set the stage for what South Carolinas all about, i think that the nation got an opportunity to witness us coming together, in a time of crisis, but showing how we really feel about one another and i think that if there is a tribute to senator pinckneys legacy, it is the manner in which we are dealing with this controversy. Do you think of this as a hate crime, as domestic terrorism . Do you think of this as essentially a random act of evil . This was an act of evil. And it was certainly there was hate. I dont know how you could walk into a church and kill. Kill people. And not be hate. This was the work of a maniac. Hes taken something from us. Our city will not be the same. But how we react to this tragedy at this time and how we move forward will define who we are. Im so struck, senator, but just about the grief, people are just very overwhelmed by the scope of what transpired in that church. I think you are absolutely right. But let me disagree with my colleague just a little. Think weve got to call this racism and i think weve got to use the word because thats a conversation that we must continue to have. No question about it, it is a depraved heart. But what motivated him . Some not getting beyond or liking others because theyre different in color and other differences as well. Think one of the dialogues that we must have Going Forward is to call this kind of act what it is and as a society, as the senator indicated, how we go forward dealing with it will help to define us. Senator, one of the things that you talk about, senator pinckney and the fact he is a Different Party and man of a different color than you. One of the things thats happened all over the south, particularly in the last ten years, particularly state legislatures, weve seen a polarization of both party and race. That has had really fraught impact on the politics of those states. Do you feel that here in South Carolina . We were just discussing that earlier. Things in our senate arent the way they were when senator pinckney and i first came to that chamber. Its not necessarily racially charged. It is probably more polarization between the partisans. Not necessarily from within our chamber but from outside. Seems like weve entered a new era of politics of disaffection, the politics of hate. Lets pick apart our differences, tear each other apart and forget that we have more in common than in our differences. Senator, thank you.
