Yasmin vossoughian. So, President Trump holding another packed Campaign Rally last night, which some fear could be another superspreader event. This was his third visit to battleground North Carolina in as many weeks. And another example of the president s Reelection Campaign being not compliant with covid guidelines. The event was held outside in another airport hangar. But there was no social distancing paper lot of people defied the mandatory face mask order by removing their masks after gaining entry. Despite the keeping large gatherings to a minimum, the president bragged that his crowd are larger now than they were before the pandemic. Joe biden came here and made a this is not the most convenient place. Its an air force. If he had 200 people i think would be a lot. I really mean it. Did you ever see the gyms with the circles, thats his crowd. If he had 200 people. I was told we had 15,000 people tonight. Were doing mostly hangar thing because were outside. Outside is very much different than being inside. According to the great doctors, right. But they say its very much different. So were doing these, were doing the outdoors, were doing the hangars. But i really believe these crowds are bigger than they were four years ago. Its pretty amazing. So, at his rally last night, the president launched into yet another attack against mailin voting, he accused democrats without any evidence, of course, of sending out unsolicited ballots. And repeated his suggestion that voters should test their States Election system. And, by the way, when they said that there are millions and millions of unsolicited ballots, when you get a ballot, say i wanted to go and vote, darling. I wanted to go and vote, why are they sending me those ballots. Sometimes, youll ask for a ballot. Thats a solicited ballot. Thats okay. You have to go through the process. You have to sign the form, you get it. Sending out millions of unsolicited ballots. Make sure you send the ballot in and go to your polling place and make sure it counts. Make sure it counts. Because the only way they can win is by doing very bad things, thats the only way. So the president also stemmed up his attack on democratic Vice President ial nominee Kamala Harris last night. Take a look. You know what, people dont like her. Nobody likes her, she could never be the first woman president. She could never be. That would be an insult to our country. By the way, you know whos further left than crazy bernie . Kamala. Kamala, kamala. Okay. So, the president also revived his false claim yesterday that mexico is going to pay for the border wall. He said the United States would be reimbursed in part by installing toll booths as he puts on the other border. You know mexico is paying for the wall, just so you understand. They dont say that, they never say it. Were going to charge a small fee at the border, toll boths. We have toll boths. Maybe were going to do something with remittance. Thats when people come here and we send it back. Well get all of the money we spent on the wall. And the president is denying reports that his campaign is in a financial crunch but said he is considering putting his own money into the 2020 race. Pledging he would contribute from his own personal fortune to ensure the success of his reelection. Yeah, if i have to, i would. But were doing very well. We needed to spend more money up front because of the pandemic and the statements being made by dems which are, again, disinformation. If we did this, we had much more money than we had last time, going into the last few months, i think double and triple. I think if we needed more wed put it up personally. How much do you need in the campaign . Whatever it takes. We have to win. This is the most important election in the history of our country. We have a radical left group going around. These people there is something wrong with them. There really is. Joe doesnt have the strength. He doesnt have the mental capability to control these people. So, according to the the new york times, of the 1. 1 billion the Trump Campaign and the party raised from the beginning of 2019 through july, more than 800 million of that money has all right been spent. Bloomberg is reporting trump has discussed spending as much as 100 million of his own money on his Reelection Campaign if necessary, to beat joe biden, according to people that are familiar with this matter. Trump personally contributed 66 million to his 2016 campaign but it would be unprecedented for an incumbent president to put his own money forward winning a second term. A new polling out of florida showing the president and joe biden are deadlocked in the battleground state. Some key graphic shifting their support. In the latest nbc news marist poll, biden and the president are tied at 47 among florida voters. Breaking down those numbers, biden is up with black voters 72 points, women, and smng senieni. Meanwhile, the president holds the advantage among men by 20 points. White voters by 15. White voters without a College Degree by 28 points. And latino, interestingly enough by four points, a statistical tie as well. And a demographic that went for Hillary Clinton back in 2016. We also have a new poll out of pennsylvania giving joe biden a ninepoint lead over the president in that state. The latest nbc news marist poll, biden is up in pennsylvania, 53 to 44. Among key graphics there, biden holds advantage by suburban voters by 19 points. Voters with a College Degree by 29. Women, 21, independent voters by 22. White voters of pennsylvania are split between biden and trump at 49 apiece. The president on the other hand holds an advantage with white evangelicals by 59 points. White voters without a College Degree. 22 voters in the rural area of the state, 22 as well. And among men by just five points. Some interesting snub ing numbe to say the least. Some not as surprising, some more surprising i have to say, especially when we talk about florida, for instance, and the latino vote with trump up four points. That latino vote going to hillary back in 2016. Florida, as we well know is a really important state as is pennsylvania. Tipped through some of those polls as well. Take three through your take. Two of those states, pennsylvania, heart of the Biden Campaigns that theyre hoping to win. But my current viewers complaints from outside groups is that they dont believe the Biden Campaign has done enough to actively and specifically target latino voters. Especially latino voters that they believe consistently with a substantial voting bloc that could help sway the election. What ive also noticenoticed, af those voters are above the 45 senior range as you pointed out. In the tightening of the polls its caused anxiety sources tell me within the Biden Campaign means that youth is even more important. It shows that the validaters, a lot of the women who validated trumps character and told the American Public that he wasnt racist, that he didnt bad treat women well. And that during the Republican National Convention May have actually bolstered his support with some people who were potentially on the fence. But again, you know, what these polls are showing is this is a tight race which both campaigns have always anticipated. Lets also talk about this rally and bring up some of those images we saw last night with the president. Its interesting because this president continued to defy, to go against, however you want to put it, his own recommendations from his Coronavirus Task force. Even in that image of the folks that are directly behind him. An image that is often very well curated by folks at these rallies, you see individuals that are not wearing masks. Throughout this rally, thousands of folks, no social distancing there as well. There is his fear, this could be yet another superspreader event. Could this back fire on him . Im not sure that we can say it will back fire, because, again, this is exactly what we saw on the south lawn of the white house during the Republican National convention. Thousands of people gathered. Against cdc guidelines, without masks, including the president himself. But i think what makes it perhaps even more shocking is that you had republican officials urging the president to wear a mask himself, saying that, you know, the former visits to North Carolina that he sets an example for the American Public. There were concerns from the local republican chair that the president appearance could in fact spark some superspreader event as you jyou just noted. What you saw last night is a snapshot of what the Trump Campaign is going to do until election day which is continuing to flout cdc guidelines. And essentially putting a spin on the coronavirus that has killed 186,000. Thats number the number of deaths we had at memorial day in the past few months. The president making a threat that his touting and teasing of a vaccine is going to improve his standing. And really just sort of glossing over the actual reality of what is going on which is the coronavirus issurging and actually spread into midwest states, that dr. Anthony fauci is saying against the president s claims that its turned the corner. I think what the president has gone as so far as to kind of pretend were not in the middle of a pandemic by not even put on a mask. The Justice Department yesterday told a federal court that it seeks to take over the president s defense in a defamation lawsuit brought against him by a woman who claims he sexually assaulted her back in the 90s. So in a motion filed in federal court, doj lawyers argued that the president was acting within the scope of his office back in 2019 when he denied an interview having sexually assaulted journalist e. J. Carroll in a dressing room in a department store. Since it was an official act, the doj is arguing that the department should be able to stand in for the President Trumps private attorneys. Makie ing the u. S. Government instead of the president as the defendant of the lawsuit. And that the defamation lawsuit could proceed while hes until office. Carroll responded trump hurls bill barr at me. He sicks the doj on us. This is unprecedented. The department of justice did not respond to requests for comments. Lets get to legal analyst Danny Cevallos. I have a couple questions, danny, i guess i think the first thing is, could a federal judge here reject this substitution, where the doj is essentially stepping in for the president s private attorneys and becoming the defendant . Yes. A judge could reject this, but going back, this is not unprecedented. In fact, federal law allows for the substitution of the United States for a federal employee, in all kinds of cases, including cases against congress people, like senator schumer has enjoyed the benefits of this law. Theres a wide scope of the federal employees that the law allows the United States to be substituted. And the case has to proceed against the u. S. Under the federal court claims act which is very difficult for plaintiffs to succeed in. So, this happens fairly often, less often with the president. And in this case, this may be one of those cases where a judge may send it back down to state court. And heres why. Because the certification by the doj does automatically get the president into federal court, but he doesnt necessarily have a right to stay there. Now the plaintiff can and almost surely will, challenge whatever the president said was within his scope as employment as president. If the court concluded it was not within his scope as employment as president , then the case goes down to the state level and proceeds as trump the person, and not trump the president or the United States. So, what is the advantage to doing this . What is the advantage to the president to doing this . And how can the doj step in on something that the president is accused of doing while he was a private citizen . Hugh advantage for the defendant. Once you institute the United States, the case proceeds under the federal court claims act. Again, very difficult for a plaintiff, much harder than proceeding against the person as an individual. Then, obviously, you have the doj footing the bill for the defense. But in this case, the president s team themselves has cited a case, and this is really interesting where a Congress Person was sued for comments he made while on the phone with a reporter about his separation from his wife. But during that separation, he made allegedly defamatory comments about an Islamic Association that was across the street from where they live. Whats fascinating here is that court concluded that the interview was within the scope of his employment as a Congress Person. But it was about topics that relate to being a Congress Person. So, this may be a case that the Court Rejects the dojs characterization, their certification, and possibly sends it back down to the state court. As destructive wildfires continue to spread across california, officials have successfully transported out more than 100 people stranded in remote locations of the Sierra Nevada by the creek fire. Were going to begin this half hour with astrazeneca. One of the companies racing to make a vaccine against the coronavirus. Announcing yesterday that it does paused global trials which includes large latestage trials of its experimental coronavirus vaccine. Due to a suspected serious adverse reaction in a participant in the uk. So, according to stat, the brir dr british drugmaker said it volunta voluntarily reviewed trials. The vaccine developed along with Oxford University has been described at the World Health Organization as probably the worlds leading candidate, and the most advanced in terms of development. So, whether the illness was directly linked to astrazenecas vaccine that point remains unclear. But the company declined to comment. On the report. White house coronavirus adviser dr. Anthony fauci yesterday cast doubt on a rushed time line to distribute a vaccine before the election, while the president continues to hammer the opposite point. Its not impossible, judy, but its unlikely, that well have a definitive answer at that time. More likely, by the end of the year. I think we can do it by november 1st. Sometime during october. And it will be a great thing. Sore shortly thereafter. It will be done before the end of the year. Id like to see it, but id like to see it more for saving lives than for politics. All right. So there are now more than 500,000 coronavirus cases in kids in this country, according to the American Academy of pediatrics. From august 20th to september 3rd alone, 70,630 kids cases were reported. An increase of 16 , huge number there. The largest increases reported in six states, indiana, kentucky, missouri, montana, north dakota and south dakota. And so while it is rare that children develop severe symptoms, the experts are warning that they could pass the virus on to more vulnerable family members. That has been the overwhelming worry there. Childrens cases now make up nearly 10 of total cases in this country. In a statement, dr. Sarah goz za, president of the academy said this, these numbers are a chilling reminder of the why we need to take this virus seriously. And while speaking to reporters yesterday, the president touted his administrations response to the pandemic. Weve done a great job with covid. Weve done a great job with the china virus. A great job. Whether its ventilators or whether its vaccines which youll be seeing pretty soon. Or therapeutic, weve done a great job. So, Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell has unveiled a slimmeddown Coronavirus Relief bill in an effort to reach a deal after a standstill for months. Well, it seems like its going to go on, that standstill. Because the 500 billion proposal includes more money for Small Business loan programs. A scaledback version of extended unemployment and a pay back for schools and the Postal Office service. It is unlikely to advance because of democratic support. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi calls the legislation, quote, pathetic. Joining us from the newsletter power up, jackie alemany. I cant even believe that were here again and that they cant figure out a Coronavirus Relief bill for americans that are struggling across this country. As you well know, there are millions and millions of folks still unemployed in this country. Small businesses are closing left and right. If you look around the corner in your hometowns where you are living, you see businesses shuttered here. And yet, they cannot come to an agreement as to how to help americans during this really dire time that will likely continue. What will be what is some of the biggest contentions here, the biggest points of contentions amongst republicans and democrats here . And do you feel this is going to affect the ballot box november 3rd . Yeah, i do feel like were, you know, just stuck on repeat here, where were in the exact same position we were when the bill first expired. People are facing eviction cliffs. They cant put food on the table. The enhanced unemployment is something that was seriously a lifeline. That wasnt just a talking point for many families who have suffered from permanent job losses, or from coronavirus debts. You know, again, the 600 extra enhancement in unemployment was clutch to keeping their lives together and maintain something sort of semblance of a normal life. You know, the president , as you remember, signed a handful of executive orders that havent quite materialized as well. The Eviction Moratorium that the president said that he extended, you know, was toothless at the time and lacked Enforcement Mechanisms that so that states are actually implementing them, so that people arent getting kicked out of their homes. But the sticking points, again, are much of the same that we had previously seen which is how much enhancement some people should be getting going forward. How long that should l it should last. And then, you know, the same issues with liability insurance, provisions, that mcconnell has been pushing for. But, you know, there is very little communication right now going on between the white house and congress. Which is surprising considering that the senate has set a handful of vulnerable republican senators who are running for reelection in what is becoming increasingly tight races in places that have been hit hard by the coronavirus. Lets talk here about dr. Anthony fauci and the president. They have very different messages as to when this vaccine could feasibly be released. The president going so far as to say it could be beginning the november, just a couple of days conveniently before his reelection. Or his bid to get reelected. And then fauci saying the best case scenario, end of the year. What is the current relationship between these two men . And who do you suspect has a better handle on the actual time line of this thing . How much pressure is the president putting on these Drug Companies to get something released before the election . Yeah. Our reporting indicates that the president views the promise of a vaccine as a lifeline for his campaign. That people who have yet to make up their mind are, you know, going to be swung by the fact that he is ushering in a vaccine as quickly as possible. You know, its impossible, i think if were looking at the facts here, dr. Fauci is the medical professional. He has the science background. He has been in public service, working on vaccines for the entirety of his career. So if there is anyone who understands how the vaccine process works, that is going to be dr. Fauci, probably one of the premier experts in the world on this topic. And then youre also looking at the facts when it comes to how long previous vaccines have taken to develop. We published a really helpful graphic, actualliy last week, that showed just how long, many years to develop vaccines that are actually safe and effective. Which doesnt even include the time line of how you actually scaleup and distribute to people on a mass basis. That, also, i think casts some doubt on the president s projections. So it is important to keep in mind, this president is running for reelection during a pandemic that many voters think he has botched his handling of. And promising a vaccine to come through operation warp speed. And these expedited task forces that hes put together are, you know, wholesome promise for this president , according to advisers familiar with his thinking as, again, a lifeline for his campaign. Former white house president secretary Sarah Sanders leapt to the president s defense yesterday as his administration tries to cast doubt on reports that he disparaged fallen american troops. Ive also said in the room, and the president had to make the most difficult calls of his presidency. When he had to let a parent know that their son had been killed in the line of duty. Thats a call no president wants to make. In those moments, i saw the president s heart. And i also saw his commitment to the men and women of our great military. That story couldnt be further from the truth. This is a president that loves our country. And will do anything to fight to protect it. So, despite sanders claims there, president s do not make calls to alert military families of deaths and the devastating news is never reported over the phone. Each branch of the military has its own protocols for notifying next of kin. But all require an officer of equal or higher rank than the Fallen Service member to do so in person, within eight hours of learning about the casualty. According to the the new york times, sanders said in a text message that the calls that she was referring to in the video were condolence calls, not death notification calls. So, yesterday, as you mentioned, we saw the selloff continue on wall street. Tech shares leading the with the nasdaq down another 4. 1 by the end of the session. That included a sizable 21 decline from tesla. The dow plunged about 600 points yesterday. Today, it looks like a bit of a rebound. U. S. Futures pointing to a positive start. But this, of course, does follow a series of down days for wall street. One of the Big Questions now, will the lawsuits continue for the tech winners, or will this prove a more temporary blitz . So a big session to watch on wall street. Now, one company thats been in the headlines a lot over the last year, boeing. The company said that yesterday, 77 deliveries, adding to the companys woes. The issues that it found and disclosed yesterday are around some of the planes, are on the carbon composite fuselage for those aerospace experts that are watching this morning. Boeing first disclosed these stabilizer issues yesterday publicly. The federal Aviation Administration said it is investigating the issues. And as of the end of august, just to give you some numbers, boeing said it had 526 unfulfilled orders for its twinaisle 787 dreamliner. Back to you. Also, lets talk apple here. They have countersued the maker of fortnite, seeking punitive damages here. What can you tell us about this . Thats right. So, this issue rolls on. Apple is accusing epic games, which owns fortnite of stealing the 30 commissions that apple takes from app developers. Youll remember, last month, epic filed a lawsuit against apple in a closely watched antitrust case that could reshape the way the whole digital app store works. Epic had alleged in that case that apples decision to remove fortnite from its app store over inapp purchase fees reflected anticompetitive behavior. Well, i missed you last week, so good to see you, yasmin, happy wednesday. This is a newly released video with Mark Zuckerberg and axios on hbo, in which he essentially tried to explain away some of the bigpicture problems that social media platforms like facebook are having with accelerating hate speech and amplifying rightwing voices. Take a listen to what he told my colleague, mike allen, about how he views the role of facebook as a sort of rightwing echo chamber. Facebook, the reality is, is a real rightwing echo chamber, if you look at some of the loudest voices on facebook, its your breitbart and its sarah palin and its franklin graham. And that part of the spectrum has figured out facebook in this moment. Your liberal friends must hate it. Well, look, i think your characterization, frankly, is just wrong. I dont think that the service is a rightwing echo chamber, to use your words. I think that, you know, everyone can use their voice and can find media that they trust that reflects the opinions and the Life Experiences that theyre having. So, you know, yasmin, we hear Mark Zuckerberg there sort of talk about how he disagrees with that characterization, but when you actually look at the data of engagement, the highest engagement posts, those that are liked the most, commented on the most, shared the most, those are more often than not either by conservative voices or posts that contain these rightwing views. So while facebook can say that, you know, you might be seeing things from media organizations, the posts that were actually engaging with the most on facebook are these rightwing voices. And that, of course, suggests that thats what resonates the most with people. So hes got more explaining to do with just 55 days until an election. I mean, listen, not surprising hearing that response from zuckerberg there, considering the fact that he hasnt necessarily been incredibly forthcoming when it comes to facebooks role, especially when it comes to the election. Lets talk a little bit more about some more of axios reporting surrounding joe bidens support amongst some key voting groups. We have talked a lot about some of the new polling that has emerged amidst all this. What is axios learning . So, were looking at some polling with hispanic voters specifically. And while joe biden is leading nationally among hispanic voters by 20 percentage points, when you look at key swing states like florida and arizona, his support is softening, and its actually lower than Hillary Clinton with her support with hispanic voters in 2016. Now, that, of course, matters, because in states like florida and arizona, hispanic voters make up over 20 of the electorate, and those are two states that trump won in 2016, but in biden in those two states right now in 2020, the race would be over. They could deliver the white house for biden. So, now the question is whether or not the Biden Campaign is doing enough to court these hispanic voters. Axios talked to a few of bidens longtime supporters in the Hispanic Community who are basically sounding the alarm, saying that if biden wants to win these voters, the Campaign Needs to start doing more.
