Him to reconsider. The new response from the white house and in just a moment, jacob blakes father, sister, and family attorney will join me right here. All of it happening against the backdrop of clashes in portland. What were learning about the killing of a man who supported a far right group and the confrontations between Donald Trumps supporter and counterprotesters before that moment. Im hallie jackson. Thanks for being here. Erin, President Trump in the last hour is out with a lot more comments about portland after another night of protests there. Tell me what youre seeing on the ground. Reporter thats right, hallie. The president tweeting this morning that this city is a mess and that if the mayor doesnt clean it up, he will send in people to do so. Worth reminding our viewers that the last time federal agents were sent to the city of portland to protect a courthouse it escalated the situation. This is the latest in a war of words between the president and the mayor of portland. The two repeatedly exchanging insults, blaming each other for the violence. And we saw more violence here in the city last night. 29 arrests were made as protesters threw rocks and eggs as well as other projectiles at the police. In the arrest, they seized two loaded handguns and a knife capping off a weekend of chaos, and violence, right here on this street saturday night. A man was shot and killed. The man wearing a far right hat. It was at the end of a day of protests that saw protrump convoy drive through the city of portland, firing paintballs and they were met by counterprotesters, clashes ensued, arrests made there, now that homicide is the subject of an ongoing investigation. No arrests at this point. Authorities have yet to identify the victim. Hallie . Monica, youre at the white house, we know the president is thinking about this, we know because we can read his twitter account. Tell me what youre hearing from sources around President Trump today . Reporter we understand this visit is completely on, despite calls to reconsider it with the governor there saying the president s visit may really in his words hinder the healing of kenosha, wisconsin. The president fully intends to go and in his words thank Law Enforcement and survey damage from some of the protests in recent days. But very critically White House Press secretary caylee mcenany was asked how the outreach is going to jacob blakes family. She said they have tried to make contact, but havent been successful so far. So there is no meeting scheduled on the books between the president or any members of his family, which is, of course, notable given the blake family did speak with former Vice President joe biden and Kamala Harris last week after the shooting of jacob blake. This is a president Going Forward with these plans, he wants to visit, he wants to make this also all about his pitch for law and order, which is central to his reelection campaign. It is something that they believe is an effective case for him to be making with just 60 plus days to go until november and the election, hallie. It is not just about going there, trying to visit this community and talk to them, but also make this pitch looking forward, they believe it is a pillar of that argument for a potential second term, hallie. Monica alba there outside the white house. Monica, erin, thank you, both. Well have more on joe bidens visit to pittsburgh today to talk about all of this. But before this, i want to bring in jacob blakes sister, letetra widman, his father and the family attorney benjamin crump. Can you hear me okay . Yes. Thank you, again. Mr. Blake and letetra, i have to ask, how is jacob doing . How is he this morning . You know, jacob got shot in his back seven times. So i can only expect hes doing as someone would that had gotten shot in the back seven times. I know hes gone under a lot of stress, trauma, and he is probably very exhausted. Hes medicated heavily from the pain. So i mean, thats how hes doing. Yeah. Mr. Blake, have you been able to have any conversations with your son or is he just not at this point able to do that . Hes yesterday he was in and out, you know, hes heavily sedated. No doubt about it. So you might get two, three minutes of and then none for the rest of the conversation. Yeah, that must be incredibly difficult and our thoughts are with you. Mr. Crump, given all this, can you provide some clarity . We have been talking about the political atmosphere that has overlaid this. I spoke with mark meadows who said the president was in touch with the familys pastor, the press secretary said this morning there has been outreach on the part of the white house, but they havent been able to connect. Ben, what is the status of a potential conversation between mr. Blakes family and President Trump . Well, hallie, thank you for jacob blake and his family. My office received no calls to set up any kind of meeting. I know when Vice President biden and senator harris wanted to make contact with the family, they simply called my office and we coordinated such a meeting. But right now this family is not focused on politics. Hallie, they are focused on trying to help a young man who has seven bullets go through his spinal cord, fracture his vertebrae, go into his colon, he lost his colon, go into a small intestine, he lost most of his intestines, going into his arm, go into his kidney, they were able to save his kidney, two holes in his stomach. He lost portions of his bowels, he lost portions of his organs an he is devastated knowing that he cant move his legs and that his three young boys witnessed him being shot in that car. Ages 8 years old, 5 years old and 3 years old. And so you can only imagine the psychological damage these babies are going to have for rest of their lives and the 8yearold for the rest of his life. And it is a litany of obviously difficulties that jacob faces. And i want to talk about some of those. Letetra, first, do you want to talk . I know Vice President biden and senator harris reached out. Do you have any interest in speaking to President Trump . Being that my parents are her and living, and theyre the head of this, that would be something that they would have to decide. It is not for me to decide. Im definitely here to i dont want politics. This is not about politics. This is about my son. Let me ask you about your son. You very emotionally last week talked about how he was when you saw him at one point in his hospital he was shackled to his hospital bed, paralyzed, as he is from the waist down, police say he was shackled because of the arrest warrant from july, now vacated. Are you confident in the Police Investigation moving forward . My confidence is in my attorney. And if my attorney sees something that is inappropriate or not necessary, im more than certain that gentleman down there in that box will stand up for my family to the utmost. So whether im secure with what they do or not, it has no nothing to do with that gentleman down there in that box will counter with. They say hes a better counterpuncher than muhammad, but well have to find out. So mr. Crump, with that setup, to you then, police have now put out what is really their strongest pushback yet to the events that unfolded. Im sure youve seen that statement from the Kenosha Police union saying that jacob blake was trying to take car keys, confrontational with police, that he was resisting officers, and it is a different account than what we heard frankly from you previously. How do you reconcile those claims and how do you respond to what the Police Association is saying now . Well, mr. Blake and his family are absolutely right. Me and our legal team are a powerful team of lawyers and our own investigation on behalf of the blake family. As the attorney general, the district attorney, and every other elected official has said, the police union does not speak for them. The police union is a union that supports our Police Officers, in my opinion, no matter how unbelievable the excessive use of force, the brutal use of force used against black people in america. So lets put that up first. Secondly, hallie, why do we need to hear anything else or see anything else besides what we see in that video . Because when black people are accused of doing something illegal or nefarious, if there is a video, they say we have video evidence. When there is a Police Officer doing something bad or killing a black person, they say, we have to put it in context. Lets dont rush to judgment. Then they rush to judgment when they shot jacob blake seven times in the back. Who posed absolutely no threat to them as he walked away, tried to get in the car and get his children out of a volatile situation and juxtapose that with the young white man who went and shot three people, killing two of them, and had the assault weapon hanging down his neck and walked right past several National Guard and Law Enforcement officials, nobody shot him in the back, nobody killed him, he made it home uninjured. We just want our children to make it home uninjured. Letetra, this issue of accountability within the Police System is one of the themes that happened in the march on friday in washington. You spoke there, you had words on accountability on fighting but not violence that seems to have resonated with a lot of people. Can you explain why it was important for you to deliver that message . Because somebody needs to do it, number one. Violence and chaos is not is not going to get us to the goals we need to meet. Black people need to come together and unify and Practice Group economics, keep our dollars in our community and build each other up. There is really nothing else that we can do because it there is certainly starting any type of violence or wars at this point would be pointless. We need to focus on our communities and building up as and empowering each other. And were really just sick and tired of the violence. Were tired of it. We dont want to see more of it. We want to see change. Thats what we want. We want our children to be able to be safe and not have to worry about being murdered just because their skin is brown. That is absolutely ridiculous. It is 2020. And if we dont start recognizing what the real issues are, it is going to keep happening. And thats unacceptable. It is completely unacceptable. The Police Officer the Police Officer is not the judge, jury and Public ServiceOfficers Police do not entail judging and sentencing and that officer judged and he sentenced my brother. He tried to sentence him to death. And that was not his place. I want a Public Service officer to do the job of a Public Service officer. He is supposed to protect, hes supposed to defend, not execute. Mr. Blake, you talk about the toll this has taken on your family. We heard your attorney mention obviously the kids in the car. Can you tell us anything about how your family is doing and how your grandkids are doing . My grandchildren unfairly have been under undue amount of stress simply because they want to see their father. It is undue, underappreciated, like my daughter just mentioned, the judge, jury and the executioner took their father away for a little for an amount of time. And were attempting, as we speak, to get them the correct psychological help that they will need for the future. But the toll on my family, i cant begin to tell you the stress and the depression that it is bringing on my family. There is brothers and sisters, it is rough. It is rough. Were standing together, you cant divide us. You cant conquer us. But the casualties of war are rare. And war has been mr. Blake and letetra war has been they have been raised a flag against us when they shot my son seven times. Thats why i got i appreciate yeah. Thank you, and thank you for because i cant im so sorry. I know im sorry. No, no, no. Please, i dont want to interrupt you. It is a tough thing with the satellite delay here. Before i do let you go, ben, i wanted to touch base with you, just to circle back, letetra and mr. Blake were complimentary of what youre doing for the family. To be clear, you dispute what the police union is saying at this moment . We dispute everything theyre saying. This family does not trust what they say, and especially when you look at the video what happened, that was not justifiable, no matter what they try to say to justify it. Benjamin crump, letetra widman, jacob blake sr. , i cant tell you how much we appreciate your time this morning and for being with us. Thank you. Well be following you and your familys story very closely here on msnbc. Thank you. Coming up, the president s team is talking about the issues underlying the unrest, saying it is not about him, theyre insisting Donald Trumps america is peaceful, but cities run by democrats are the problem. It is not just donald trump talking about the unrest in american cities, joe biden is taking that on head on in his first major post convention speech. It is happening today, later this afternoon, in pittsburgh, and thats where we find mike memoli. Mike, when youve been talking to your sources on the biden team, what is this return to the trail going to look like . Reporter so, hallie, as you know, there has been a lot of conversation over the weekend among the Political Class pundits and especially on twitter about whether the former Vice President should be travelitravel i ing. As we know President Trump will be to kenosha, wisconsin, to address the scenes were seeing there and in cities across the country. For as long as ive been covering joe biden, joe biden has kicked off the stretch run of the Fall Campaign in the city of pittsburgh, specifically labor day parade, that speaks to the kind of voters joe biden has long appealed to. The fact that joe biden is kicking off his return to the campaign trail, in pittsburgh itself, i think speaks to a couple of the messages and the audiences of his intended speech today. The first is he wants to address in fact these scenes we are seeing across the country, the violent demonstrations we have seen in big cities. Hes going to, as he has over the last few week, both speak to the peaceful protesters, the right for them, and the importance of their message in support of black lives matter, but also to forcefully condemn violence. I want to read from his statement, a taste of what we might here in terms of the message. We must not become a country at war with ourselves, a country that accepts the killing of fellow americans who disagree with you. He goes on to say, that is the america that President Trump wants us to have. And that, i think is going to be a very important part of his message today, to say, listen, donald trump wants to make this a law and order election, highlight the scenes across the country. This is Donald Trumps america on his watch that we have seen this. The other message, the other audience here is to his party and to the president as well, to those who might already be in the early stages of what others on the Campaign Call the bed wetting, we can be strong on this message, this is a battle for the soul of america. Were not going to be distracted from what they believe is the core of their message at this point, they want to focus on the president s handling of the coronavirus, and especially on his handling of the economic recovery and, again, thats why you see a former steel mill that has been rehabbed as part of a sort of regeneration of pittsburgh, and the message that joe biden wants to talk about throughout the Fall Campaign. Mike, let me follow up with you quickly. Sources ive been talking to in and around team trump, the white house, the campaign, are making this argument that joe biden didnt want to campaign, wanted to delay as long as possible, the evenly reasonly reason hes getting on the trail now is because he feels like he has to. Can you talk about why the campaign felt that was important . Reporter we know heading into the convention there was a lot of time and effort being put on his choice of a running mate, getting that convention as well executed as possible. They always viewed labor day and you heard this from the former Vice President himself at a fundraiser last week, sort of that natural inflexion point in the campaign when you get on the road. But as always, the Biden Campaign insists when i talk to advisers their decisions in terms of travel are dictated by the science and what they think is safe for the former Vice President to do and also for any supporters, any of those who might be affected by his travel, hallie. Mike memoli in pittsburgh, thank you. Let me bring in senator amy klobuchar, democrat from minnesota and, of course, former 2020 president ial candidate. Great to have you back on the show. Good morning. Thanks, hallie. Great to be on. Lots to talk about this morning. I want to start with something that one of your colleagues on the senate on the republican side had to say about President Trumps decision to visit kenosha, to visit wisconsin tomorrow. I want to play for you what senator cotton had to say. Listen. If we let democratic mayors and democratic governors continue to cede our streets to anarchists and if we let joe biden proliferate. What do you make of that . First of all, ill note the governor and the mayor in wisconsin, in kenosha, have suggested and very strongly recommended that the president not come. But all of that said, right now, we are living in Donald Trumps america. Whether this is going on in wisconsin, whether it is going on in any state in the country, he stokes the divide, he stokes the chaos. We know that look at his tweets yesterday, the job of the president should be to unite the country, to bring down the pressure, to try to get people to work together. He does the opposite. So what youre going to hear from joe biden today in pittsburgh is that kind of unifying message. He has been very clear that he condemns violence, just as i do, from the left or the right. And i think thats the problem with this president. He literally loves the chaos. Look at what Kellyanne Conway said, she said the more chaos and anarchy and vandalism and violence reigns, the better it is for the very clear choice on whos best on Public Safety and law and order. We need to come together as a country, this president wants to have chaos, he sees it as a ticket for another term and i think the americans are going to see right through it. You mentioned at the top of this, this answer, senator, that the wisconsin governor, you correctly noted, he does not want the president to visit, he is concerned it kill hinder healing. Do you believe President Trump should cancel his trip to kenosha tomorrow . Zw i cant make him cancel anything. But what i can do is talk directly to the American People, just like joe biden is doing today, to say are you really safer . We just talked about the violence, everyone sees that and the divide hes sewn and his refusal to move on police reform. How about this . During his republican convention, while people were singing arias from the balcony and all kinds of fancy outfits and stage craft, 3600 people died from the coronavirus. 180,000 americans have died from this pandemic. Is that safer when ive got to go visit my dad through a glass window because he got coronavirus and somehow survived at age 92 and i think it is the last time im going to see him . Thats what so Many Americans have experienced, hallie. So, no, i dont think people are safer in Donald Trumps america. We need a new president. Do you believe joe biden should visit wisconsin . Specifically kenosha . I hope he does. He said hes interested in doing it. Hes listened to the science. We see him going to pittsburgh, which is fantastic. We are excited that joe biden, i think, is also going to be on the road at some point here. And theyre giving up, they to be careful. Look at what happened during the republican convention. 3600 people died from this pandemic. We all know we have to be careful and theyre simply following science and thats the right thing to do. As you know, senator, i cover the white house in my day job for nbc news and i was talking to Trump Campaign officials and frankly those inside the Biden Campaign as well and both acknowledge this race does appear to be tightening at this point. You have two polls out over the weekend, online polls, showing that the former Vice President is in the lead, it is a sixpoint lead. The Morning Consult finds the president gained ground specifically with white and suburban voters. Does this suggest to you, you look at this, that perhaps some of the president s rhetoric may be working . Do you think it is too early to tell . How do you read that . We should note that joe biden is in the lead. Hes in the lead in battleground states. And given everything the president has thrown out there, i think it shows the strength of the joe biden and Kamala Harris camp. Secondly, we never thought this was going to be easy, hallie. I now how close my state was in 2016. We know how hard this is going to be. And it is more than anything else a silent call for people to get out and vote and to organize and to put up lawn signs and to show their support for sanity in this country, to stop this chaos, to stop this violence, to make people safe again. And i think that you are going to see more and more of that going on as this Campaign Takes off across the country, is it im excited. I love joe bidens speech. And im glad hes ahead, but i know it is going to be a long road and i am so excited to help him in the midwest because in the end, the hard working people of the midwest, they wanted government that works for them, this government is not working for them. Before i let you go, i have to ask you about this development from the white house over the weekend, the director of National Intelligence telling congress hes no longer doing in person briefings on Election Security issues. Written briefings will continue. So they will be in writing, not orally. You call that a complete outrage. Can you explain what your concerns are and what democrats might be able to do about it if anything . The director of intelligence, that office was set up after 9 11, that office was set up to be able to share information because of an attack on our homeland. We know, it is public that russia is trying to invade our election again, that theyre conducting a disinformation campaign. And to cut off congress from any information on that is going to put us right back where we are. We know that, in the words of the administration cites leaks, do they have a point . Im sorry to interrupt you. They cite leaks, a lot of partisan leaks they have concerns about that. Does that hold water to you . All i know is i went to one of the briefings, i didnt leak anything. I found it helpful. I commended the Intelligence Forces for what the information they gave us afterward. I think it is helpful. I think we need to know what is going on. This white house has blocked my bipartisan, with senator lankford, my bipartisan Election Security bill. We could have had backup paper ballots, could have gotten this done. They blocked it. They made phone calls to republican senators to stop it. Are we surprised theyre now stopping the briefings just a few months before this election . The American People have got to be on this, i think were going to have to subpoena the director to come in. I hope to doesnt come to that. But we should be allowed to be briefed on National Security issues. That information cannot be bottled up in the white house with the president that is using people for his own purposes just like he used the white house lawn. Senator amy klobuchar, senator, thank you for coming back on the show. Hope to have you back again soon. Appreciate your time. Up next, a fact check, the fda saying it is willing to rush approval for a covid vaccine, even before they have full results of the extensive human testing. Is that going to be safe . You also have today the head of the fda under scrutiny after saying a future vaccine might be given emergency approval before the end of clinical trials. Those are designed to ensure safety and effectiveness. Well have more on that in a bit with our medical expert. On the school front, as colleges and universities navigate growing outbrakes around the country, Temple University in philly is putting in place a two week pause for in person classes. Thats to try to minimize more spread. It comes as more than 1200 students at the university of alabama tested positive for the virus since classes there resumed earlier this month. I want to bring in Kerry Sanders who joins us from punta gorda, florida, a concern over students and staff testing positive with more kids going back to school. There is also confusion on how the Florida Department of health is reporting the numbers. What can you tell us . Reporter well, parents absolutely want information. Im in charlotte county, florida, here, this is first day of school. Now every school in the state is open, so as the kids are returning to school, with that excitement, the parents are anxious. This as the miami Herald Reporter who was very intrepid digging deep into a website was able to come across what is now described as a draft report where it talks about those who have tested positive in the school system. 765 florida residents associated with daycare centers, elementary, middle schools and high schools testing positive. The governor says that was a preliminary report, should not have been posted. That information is taken out of context. I contacted the department of health, the department of education asking for specifics of when they can give us the updated information, information that parents want absolutely. There has been no answer yet. Meantime, teachers are looking at that information because they feel vulnerable. This is what the Union President has to say about getting that information and getting it soon. We need to slow down, we need to do this right. We need to figure out not only how we open our schools, but how we keep our schools open and keep them safe. Reporter and the union filed suit against the state about the way the schools have reopened. Every school in the state is now open, whether it is in person or virtual. That doesnt mean learning is under way. Miamidade county, which is the Fourth Largest School District in the nation with the Online School starting today, going down. The servers were unable to handle the number of people dialing in. And right now theyre trying to figure out, there are a lot of parents at home with their kids now, trying to calm them down, anxious over keeping their kids in sort of like an understanding that technology doesnt always work, especially when you have the size of the School District like the fourth largest one in miamidade. Hallie . Kerry sanders live for us there in florida. All good points. Thank you for being with us. I want to bring in nbc news medical correspondent dr. John torres with the reality check on where we stand with this covid vaccine. Thank you for being on the show. What do you make of stephen hahn saying hes willing to authorize this vaccine before the phase three clinical testing is done . Hallie, this is a bit of an unusual step, a step that might be needed because of pandemic, but depends how they go about it. Explain a little bit, what hes saying is instead of an approval, which takes years to happen, because you have to have very sxextensive testing to mak sure it is safe and effective, theyre possibly going to lock at emergency use authorization, which means they look at it in a different standard. That says, do the benefits outweigh the whiskrisks . The concern about among a bunch of experts is, are we jumping the gun a bit too much . Are we doing it before the phase three trials are complete and thats the big issue right now. And some are saying, lets have an independent panel that can go ahead and join with the government, with the Coronavirus Task force, to make sure that were doing this in a nonpolitical way, no pressure politically behind this, this is based on science and data. But what theyre saying essentially is because the pandemic is raging, this is what dr. Hahn is saying, they want to make sure they get the vaccine out as quickly as possible, to make sure that again it is safe and effective. We know it is effective, it is the safe part people are getting hooked up on it right now. They havent seen enough about it or know enough people who have had it. The main thing i would say is keep an eye on what is going on between now and the end of the year. Most doctors say probably the springtime is when we should be looking at getting the vaccine. The end of the year, possibly. If everything lines up perfectly. So looking at the studies, how they approved the studies and if they decide to use an independent panel to help them get this approval process, then we can get we can be assured more more often that this is not a political issue, this is more a science issue. Once that gets done, then see what experts are saying, ill be talking about it on tv, what we fell like has been done if it has been done correctly and if it looks like it is safe, which is most important, and can be effective as well. Who gets the vaccine first, dr. John, once we have it . Right now thats what theyre trying to figure out. What theyre looking at mainly what they have been talking about for months is front line healthcare works, those that have to go into the trench and take care of people with coronavirus, those with preexisting medical conditions, the elderly and those with known risk factors from complications and working down from there. 330 Million People, not everybody can get the vaccine all at once. So theyre struggling now with trying to figure out exactly who to get it, how to get it to them and when to get it to them. And are there companies there are, in a good position to get the vaccine soon which are in best position to potentially if everything goes right and perfectly have a vaccine by the end of the year, early next . There is well over 100 companies now that are trying to get a vaccine around the world, but there is probably four companies that are in the lead. The Big Companies moderna, pfizer, the uk oxford vaccine as well, that were looking at, looks like it is going to start in the u. S. Tomorrow, having testing in the u. S. , and then Johnson Johnson is catching up as well. Those are the biggest ones youre going to hear about over the next couple of months that have entered the late trials. 30,000 people in some of these trials, theyll start here real soon and theyre going to find out results very quickly, hopely october november, then crunch the data, get some information and decide if it is safe and effective. Dr. John torres, always great to have you and your expertise on the show. Thank you. Coming up, the last thing renters need during the pandemic, losing their home, right .
