Today with the trianglelation that none of the people were him and no resignation is necessary. He stuck to that version at a press conference earlier today. I believed then and now that i am not either of the people in that photo. I cannot in good conscious choose the path that would be easier for me in an effort to duck my responsibility to reconcile. I will continue doing the business of virginia. Folks, if you following me on this show, you know what side i come down on. It goes without saying that northam should resign, and youll hear that from me tonight. But i want to add that even if he is ousted by internal pressure, it wont excuse the Democratic Partys blind spots on racism or absolve the Republican Party for ignoring it within their own ranks. As i sat and watched Governor Northams press conference, hoping he would resign because, whether you want to deal it or whether or not he was in the photo or not, it really makes no difference. It was on his yearbook page. And it is hard for me to believe despite his claims, he never saw his yearbook in 30 years. But then he came with an excuse, an admission that really drove the nail through the wood for me. He said, i didnt do black face on that picture, but i did do blackface. Listen. That same year, i did participate in a dance contest in san antonio in which i darkened my face as part of a Michael Jackson costume. I look back now and regret that i did not understand the harmful legacy of an action like that. So i will not resign from being governor because i was not in blackface on my yearbook, even though it was my page, my yearbook. But the same year, 1984, when i was 25 years old, i, in a dance contest, dressed up like Michael Jackson, but found it all right for me to do blackface as Michael Jackson. Same year as the yearbook. Now, 1984, i became the Community Affairs director for Michael Jacksons victory tour, his concert tour all over the country at his request. I saw thousands, tens of thousands of young white kids dressed like michael, wearing the glove, wearing the high pants at the end showing their socks and doing the moonwalk like michael. None of them wore blackface. It takes a mentality to add blackface to a Michael Jackson costume, the same mentality that you would stand with a ku klux klan robed person or wear blackface yourself, or have it on your yearbook page. He also admitted that his nickname in school was coon man. Maybe they felt it was appropriate for you to be remembered that way because year books are your statement going into how your life will be as you prepare to go on with your life. Governor, you should resign. And as i said earlier, since you brought up Michael Jackson, i repeat, you should listen to a Michael Jackson song in the Governors Mansion tonight and start packing and beat it. Lets bring in democratic virginia delegate lamont bagby, democratic strategist and virginia native, otmar omar. And tim wise, author and antiracism activist. Let me go to you first, delegate. The black caucus of virginia has called on the governors resignation. Has that changed since his press conference this afternoon . No, rev. It has not changed. Actually, we put out another press release again calling upon the governor to resign. We had one meeting with the governor yesterday in which about ten of my members walked over to the Governors Office and met with him to talk about our concerns and talk to him directly face to face. My members deserve the opportunity to talk to him face to face and express their outrage and concern and displeasure of what we had what had been revealed. Just on the house floor yesterday, rev, i made a speech. Its something you are probably very familiar with, and that is the virginia legislative black caucus has no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests. I made that let me ask you this, delegate, bagby. Youre right, i am familiar with that line and your work as well. But let me ask you, for the good of the state, the good of the party, the good of the country, because we have to be consistent. If were going to call out people in the Republican Party or on the right, you cant excuse i mean, the ku klux klan robe and hood is a terrorist symbol. Were not talking about somebody talking street talk here or locker room talk. Were talking about symbols of terrorism. Thats what the kkk robe means, were talking about defacing us and demoralizing us. It doesnt even seem like he understands the gravity of what this represents. Thats alarming. Again, yesterday we were having a conversation solely about the picture, and then later on we found out about coonman. Today he shared Additional Information with virginia that his Michael Jackson pictures out there, i will straillustrates t doesnt understand the gravity of it. Even when he said had he put a little bit of shoe polish on his face because shoe polish is hard to get off. Now, you worked on this campaign. At any point in his campaign can you ever hear him say there were things in the state and in the school that he went to that were wrong and racist and he had to grow out of . Because you must remember 1984 when he did this, he was not a child. He was 25 years old, going to medical school. And this was the year Michael Jackson was the biggest star in the world, to really go as a crossover as he did. Bill cosby had the hottest show on television. Jesse jackson got millions of votes nationwide. There was a white cultural backlash to all of this. So in that kind of climate is when he behaved like this. Did he ever refer to it then while he was campaigning for governor where he got 87 of the black vote in virginia . Thank you, reverend, for having me. I have volunteered on his campaign. I was a fundraiser, a surrogate, i got to know him very well because i was also a state party steering member. I didnt work as paid staff on his campaign. None of this, though, from someone who was a surrogate for his campaign in some regards and helping out, came out in any way, shape, or form. Thats whats been so hard about this last 24 hours for a lot of local black electives. This is just unbelievable, right . And he gave comments yesterday that said it was him. But this morning all of a sudden it changed. Hes like, well, its not me. But i was in blackface in another photo potentially that he wont say is the case, in that same time frame in 1984. At this point hes eroded the trust of so many of us who have worked with him, have supported him, its quite heartbreaking because i know so many africanamericans in virginia of different generations, certainly of a Younger Generation whove been elevated by him in politics, whove been mentored by him, who serve in his administration currently. I think what theyre going through right now, and this is for him to say im going to have a discussion, im going to have a reconciliation tour around the state of virginia and theyre going to listen, nobody has time for him to understand the implications of blackface not while he sits as governing the state. Let me stop you right there because this is just in. Theres a new photo we want to show you. This is from the Virginian Pilot newspaper. Allegedly one more photo of men in blackface from 1984 evms yearbook. But we want to make it clear, this is not Governor Northam. Tim weiss, these photos were all through his yearbook, a yearbook he says he gave photos to, and he claimed he never got the yearbook and never looked at it in 30 years. I dont know why you give photos the your yearbook and not interested enough to come back. But this was throughout his yearbook. He never mentioned this, never talked about the racism of the school he went to. And clearly never talked about how it was on his page in the yearbook, but now today he reveals, but i did put black face on due to Michael Jackson, even though i dont know anyone else that did that and then became governor of a state. Right. Well, the line from scripture is go and send no more. The operative word being go. One can certainly be rehabilitated and changed, but when you have done this and you knew about the Michael Jackson incident and only bring it up because of a possible photo being seen, he doesnt have a deep appreciation for the hurt and pain this causes the black virginians without whose votes he could not have won. And the thing that disturbs me the most about this is that White Virginians and white americans are not outraged enough and demanding his resignation. I mean by that white democrats and some liberal folks who i keep hearing saying things like on liberal website, well, remember, its virginia. I mean, you know, they were raised with these images. Im a southerner. My family has been in the south for literally hundreds of years. My mother was clear enough with me growing up that black charactertures were so offensive that little black sambo was not allowed in my home. Being southern is not an excuse, being white is not an excuse, being a white male southerner is not an excuse. We should demand better of our people as allies with people of color before we go, it is very true what tim is saying, that we really cant excuse it. This is where charlottesville happened. Now hes going to be the governor of a state that we will mark as the 400th anniversary of where enslaved blacks were first brought to this country in 1619. Hes going to be the governor preside over this. What will happen, what can happen in the house of delegates if he does not resign . Will there be moves to remove him . I can tell you this. Just to go back to something i heard earlier, i want to be clear that the virginia Democratic House caucus, the Democratic Caucus, the Virginia SenateDemocratic Caucus all have called for his resignation. And many democratic president ial candidates as well. Good. And the state party of virginia. I mean, just about every organization that contributed to the Democratic Party has called for his resignation. Theres no opportunity for him to continue to serve. If, in fact, he decides to continue to fight the resignation, i dont think he has any way of fighting back on a vote by both chambers, the house and the senate. The other way that he will be removed is the attorney general, the president of the senate, and the speaker of the house can also decide to remove him. So in your judgment, there will be a move to remove him whether he resigns willingly or not . I dont see another why. All right. Im going to have to hold it there. Thank you all. Coming up, ill ask a former democratic governor whos eyeing a 2020 president ial run about the situation in virginia and Race Relations in america. Thats next right here on politicsnation. Almost the entire democratic establishment calling for your resignation saying its Justin Fairfax to deserves to stand where your standing right now. Whats your response to that . You know, i think when eve a great job over the last year. We worked on the challenges i just outlined. This has hurt a lot of people in our party and to our people in the opposing party. Its hurt virginians. As we continue to follow the developments in virginia, the national Democratic Party is getting a handle on its growing president ial field of 2020, with most of the confirmed bigname entrants coming out of congress. But any democrat that makes it to a general election and onto the white house will have to appeal to and ultimately governor republicans in this climate. With that in mind, some insiders are touting the nations governors as the electable moderate problemsolvers that democrats need to defeat President Trump. Joining me now is former democratic governor of colorado, john hicken looper. Until three weeks ago, you were the governor of colorado. As a governor, let me ask you directly. Do you think that your fellow democratic governor in virginia is doing the right thing tonight by not resigning . No, i dont think theres any question he has to step down. A big part of what your governor does is bring people together, especially in this time, in this country, where we have a president who is dividing us more fiercely than ever, where you see acts of racism across the country, where White Supremacy is growing. A governor has to bring people together and reassure them that we are unified. You had in that state of virginia, charlottesville, where a young lady was killed, where neonazis marched. How can you have someone with this background, even if you only believe his blackfacing of Michael Jackson, governor, to bring that state together given his own background history and silence on it until caught with this yearbook . I think that level of insensitivity almost makes it impossible that he would be able to navigate the just how difficult situations are when youre a governor. I dont see how he could possibly go forward and be able to go to all parts of community. As a governor, youre not just the governor of who elected you, the people of voted for you, youre the governor of the entire state. You know, thats, again, this kind of issue when it comes out and displays that level of racial insensitivity, i think it makes it impossible. Now, many of us, including myself have said that the present occupant of the white house, donald trump, has even further polarized this country and given a sense of empowerment to some elements that have come out with ugly things. What do you feel is the type of candidate that the Democratic Party needs to beat donald trump, whether its dealing with the possible russian connections, dealing with the wall at the mexican border, and dealing with the polarization . What is the type of candidate that you think is going to be necessary to win in 2020 if, in fact, President Trump is there and runs for reelection . Well, i think theres no question. In my lifetime this country has never been so divided. Even during the vietnam war, i dont think we ever had leadership that was as divisive as what President Trump has brought to this country. I think democrats and a lot of other people around the country, independents and moderate republicans, are going to stand up and say we want people or we want a leader, we want a president who can bring people together and who can demonstrate a persistent, a long string of achievements of progressive values that actually got done. Yeah. I think that to replace rightwing incompetence and lack of management skills, Progressive Management skills is not progress. You have to have some real progressive ideas, but also the ability to execute. And many people feel that people like you may fit that profile. Are you going to run for president , governor . Well, were still a few weeks away from that decision, but we spent the last year, my family and a lot of my closest friends, really working through what would it look like to have a pragmatist, someone who a problemsolver trying to bring this country back together again. I look at the times when i was mayor of denver for years and the last eight years at governor, where we were able to get people that were feuding to come together, put down their weapons and figure out a solution, a compromise sometimes, but something that moved us all forward. And that sense of coming together and being unified is something that is something this country desperately has a hung hunger for. The president says hes willing to shut down the government again if he doesnt get the wall, or he will declare a National Security emergency. Your response . I think its ridiculous. A, i dont think hes going to declare a National Emergency. Theres already indications that the republicans in congress would turn against him. Hed end up having to veto a bill that would wash away his state of emergency, then hed be stuck in court. This is a president who made all these promises. Hes going to build a wall and mexico is going to pay for it. Almost without exception his promises have not come to pass. And the people that he said he was going to help are worse off now than they were before, whether youre looking at coal miners or people trying to grow soybeans, go across the country. A lot of broken promises to people that voted for him. Thank you, governor hicken looper. Coming up, what i hope to hear and not hear from President Trump on tuesday during his state of the union. Sure, you saved some face, mr. Trump, you get your moment to look the part of president. But before you stick your chest out too far, i want to issue you a challenge. See, for the past three years ive listened to you in speech after speech cast the state of our union as one of utter darkness, dangerous caravan at the southern border, constant exploitation by our global peers, except for russia, of course, and a Fake News Media devoted to subverting democracy. You know, your job. So this year, i dare you to come with a hopeful, inclusive message for all americans. And yes, that includes the 65 Million People who didnt vote for you in the last election. In other words, tell the truth the leave the wall and your ego at home. The new 2019 ford edge st this afternoon, Virginia Governor democratic Ralph Northam remaining firm in his position not to resign from office. The decision, despite numerous calls, came after it was revealed the governor appeared in a racist yearbook photo, a picture he apologized for, then later reaccountanted by saying he doesnt remember. And then today saying hes not even in the photo, even though it was on his yearbook page. Joining me now to talk, radio host on the left, jo madison of sirius xm, and on the right, hugh hewitt of salem radio network. Should the governor resign . Absolutely, al. Im a virginian. I voted for ed gillespie who was attacked as being a racist in the 2017 election unfairly. I would have voted for e. W. Jackson. Northam beat an africanamerican bishop. I do not believe Ralph Northam day. I believed him yesterday when he was asking for an apology. And i would like to see two resignations, his and nicolas maduro. Its a day for resignation for people who have done terrible things. Well, all right, joe. Before i respond, let me ask you, should northam resign . Of course he should resign. This is not a left or right. This is not a republican or a democrat. Its not a conservative or a liberal. Its just raw racism. I should also add, it could very well be a distraction too. I think the governor should resign and say i no longer want to be a distraction, there are too many important things going on, like a bipartisan Conference Committee to deal with border security. There are other issues that we have to deal with in this country, and the media, unfortunately, will probably stay on this far too long. But i also want to add a second thing. Who was the president of that school that allowed that to go into their yearbook . Who is the publisher . There are several photos. I just showed different photos of blackface in the same yearbook. And i think those people should be held accountable and they ought to speak up and they ought to apology. You real apologize. You have to question what was going on in that school in 1984 that this was allowed to be so pr prevalent and published. In fact, black taxpayers could have been paying for that. But let me go to you. When you say what youve said about you hope northam resigns, the fact is that we are looking at a lot of racial polarization in the country. And i think whether its democrat or republican, we must speak out and we must start doing something about it. Do you think President Trump will address that in his state of the Union Address tuesday night, since many of us feel hes exacerbated it. This is the state where he said there were good people on both sides in the charlottesville incident. Certainly if i was his speech writer, i would certainly address it, al. This is not a republican issue, no, sir, not a democratic issue. Im roughly Ralph Northams age. There was never a time when i did not know that appearing in blackface or in a ku klux klan outfit was not reprehensible and repugnant. You around the same age and you knew blackface and a robe i did. Hallelujah. I went to a Catholic School by entire life, al. You would have gotten smashed around by the dean of men if you had done anything that stupid and racist. Im also amazed that medical schools had year books. My law school didnt have a yearbook. Im pretty confident if you go back to the University Michigan year books of the 80s, youre not going to find anybody in blackface or a ku klux klan outfit. Who run that school and who published that book. Why didnt we know about this when others were running against him in 2013 . Where was the media. I think we can ask that about a lot of people on both sides of the aisle. Let me go back to you, joe. The timing of 84, you were doing a lot of Voter Registration and turnout for the naacp that year. I was doing civil rights work and helped Michael Jackson with Community Relations for his tour. Bill cosby had the number one show. The climate was where blacks were really main lynch pins of the culture and there was a white backlash. Kids didnt want their kids imitating people like michael. Can i add Something Else if you remember. We were on that road together. Lets not forget south africa and the Antiapartheid Movement that was going on at the time and how politicized that was and now they denounced nelson mandela. Im not so much concerned about i am concerned about who ran the medical school and where were the adults and all this. But we also have to wonder, fraternities, these things dont happen in a vacuum. Students know these things. Ill close by saying the issue of racism, all it needs, its always just below the surface, and all it needs is to be scratched. And here we go. Lets just be real and be ready to speak up. You know, i always say this. You celebrate diversity, you agitate for diversity, and you educate for diversity. Hugh, let me ask you. The president has said he will either go for a National Emergency if he doesnt get the money for his wall or shell shut the government down again. What is he going to do in your mind . I think hes negotiating for a big deal compromise, at least i hope he is, al. I believe whefgz the state of the union, he might lay out what is the compromise. Jared kushner is pushing hard for a big deal. Lindsey graham wants to have the debt limit, a group of things in there. We have to look at regularization not just of daca and tps, but also 10 Million People in the country without their documents. However, we do need between 700 and 1,000 miles of border barriers because of importation of children for trafficking. I want to make sure people understand. If northam doesnt resign, section iv of the virginia constitution, you can be removed from the governorship for malfeasance or neglect of. Do you that is a pretty vague term, but i think the back flip that northam did yesterday, im sorry, its not my dog, he didnt bite you and you kicked him first. I would impeach him if he didnt go we could debate on the president. Im out of time. Let me also correct one thing. Fentanyl, excuse me, it didnt come across a wall, it didnt come over a wall. It came in a truck through port of call. The largest bust. The largest bust in Border Patrol history. Thats where most drugs come from and by airplane. Thank you, joe and hugh hewitt. We will im sure have you both on again. You might not be as agreeable for most of the show. Up next, what should President Trump say in his state of the union about the russia investigation . The reason, she believes stone is talking too much with the media. Second, sentencing of former Campaign ChairmanPaul Manafort has been canceled this week. Why . Theres questions on whether he breached his plea deal. Were days away from michael cohen, the president s fixer, testifying before the house intelligence committee. Joining me to discuss this, sam nunberg, former Trump Campaign adviser, and paul butler, former federal prosecutor and msnbc legal analyst. Let me go to you first, sam. In the middle of all of this, we dont know what hes going to testify to, manafort sentencing put off, roger stone may be silenced. Will the president deal with any of this on tuesday at the state of the union . And what do you think is going through his head and around the circle advising him what all these legal clouds that are over him . The second part is a complicate part of whats going on in his head, but in terms of addressing this in the state of the union, i doubt it because he hasnt addressed it previously and he hasnt been nuanced on this investigation investigation at all. He just calls it a witch hunt which i think will do a d disservice to him when the facts come out. I dont think they will lead directly to the president but theyre not going to be helpful, theyre going to be problematic. These developments, if he looks at them honestly and theyre not good, Robert Mueller systematically taken out or put people in jail that are close to this president. Not only that but what he has done that was very smart was he put out to the southern districts things having to do with the business and the campaign. Michael cohen, that was a surprise to some people that he ultimately decided to cooperate. Only Robert Mueller and god knows what they have said and it is not good for the president. I keep hearing everybody talking about everybody, but the guy that was there the longest that was keeping the books and knew where the checks were written, no one heard his name and he may be of a very dangerous witness if in fact he has something to give them. Robert mueller knows a lot that we dont know. And ordering emails from wikileaks like i would order pop eyes. He was saying i want something with dirt on the clinton foundation. Another time i want something that casts doubt. But the defense of that will be that roger was not working for the campaign directly. They have to prove that he was given the information as theyre saying for a senior advisor. And sam knows that at the same time roger stone was ordering these emails from wikileaks he was talking to then candidate donald trump. He was in constant communication with donald trump. The president admitted this when he said yeah, i spoke to roger, but we never spoke to the president says they talked allot, but roger had information on his opponent and he never reported it. That was a question in the very least. He has not publicly blurted out the response yet, but when i was in the valoluntary, how often d they speak and what did he say they spoke about . This is one of the first questions. And one of the things corsi has said is that roger called jerome corsi before, on the friday, before the Washington Post put out the access Hollywood Tape saying theyre looking into whether or not roger spoke to the Trump Campaign that day, that i know for a fact.
