The water on 1st street between willow and clinton still off as crews worked to fix the water main here and then theyll be working to fix the actual street. I pull up, roads closed, and theres a car just popping out of the sidewalk and theres the entire street flooded. Reporter this is how 1st street looked earlier this morning. A water main break pumping water out and a car drowning in a massive sinkhole. About 6 a. M. The car alarm in the apartment right up there. So looked outside, saw the street was flooded. Only took a few seconds to figure out it was my car whose alarm was going damage had already been done. The car paid off and a fresh battery installed last week. A hassle thats costing him a day of work today and headaches in the future. Its also costing others plenty of business. No one was allowed to open up while work was being done. That forced valerie to take stock. I was lucky it happened on a monday because the weekends are where we make our bread and butter. But Going Forward for the rest of the week, sales are going to be completely down. Nobody is going to be trusting in the street to park on there and this is certainly an area where people come to this store because theres parking. Tonight their loved ones say more could have been done to save them. Two boys, 2yearold and 7yearold boy died in the Early Morning blaze in orange along with the man inside the house. Orange mayor duane warren said the Fire Department was on the scene of this fire exactly three minutes after they got that call, but unfortunately that fire was so destructive as you can see, they had to tear down that house. Family members say they believe the three people who died inside could have been saved. Reporter neighbors watched, neighbors went to try and help as people from ran inside 251 inferno before dawn. Family members say their great grandmother woke up, saw flames, and tried to get everyone out. She yelled fire, fire, fire, and tried to put the fire out. Reporter several extended family members shared the home. At least eight people were inside. Word spread and more family arrived on the scene. Reporter it it took a man, a stranger to come in the house and get my grandmother out. My grandmother ended up going back in there to save her grand kids and her son. Reporter this family said more should have been done to rescue their loved ones. Two little boys and an adult male didnt make it out alive. She said she pleaded with firefighters. He said no, the fire was too bad. I feel as though if thats your job and you took an oath to save peoples lives, youre supposed to at least make an attempt to go in there. Those little kids didnt get a chance at life and now theyre gone. Theyre gone. Reporter at least five people were rescued. The family said the mother of the children who died is alive to save her kids. She dont still know that her kids didnt get out. She dont know that. They made it out but not alive. Reporter the cause of the fire which started on the second floor is still under investigation. The may family, in mourning, upset and angry. Me and my husband tried to go in there. We tried to go in there. You have one officer seen that. He came and got us like no, you cant go in there. Thats our family in there. Youre not doing what youre all supposed to do to go in there and get them. Were going to go in there and get them. The Fire Department is still trying to confirm the exact cause of the fire. The family members who did make it out, were thinking its at least five of them. Theyre being treated at st. Barnabus hospital for severe burns. The city has set up a shelter or a place where people can drop things off, donated items for the family members who were affected by this fire including the neighbors whose houses were burned. They surveyed more than 6,000 officers and said they felt conditions are more difficult and dangerous than ever. Sandra bookman is live for us in harlem outside the 28th precinct with more on this poll. This is the first time the pba has done this kind of survey. The union says it showed exactly what they expected to hear, under staffing, lack of training and support has taken a toll. The city says those are issues currently being addressed. I dont put a lot of stock in that survey. Ive been in the business 40 years and cops have been complaining about low morale in every place ive ever worked. Reporter that reaction today from mayor de blasio and Police Commissioner bratton when asked about a newly released pba survey suggesting Job Satisfaction and morale among rank and file officers has hit of the 6,000 officers surveyed, 87 believe the city is less safe since de blasio became mayor. 96 feel the nypds relationship with the public has worsened. And 89 said theyd leave the department for a better paying job. Pba president pat lynch says it is clear from these results that our citys current Public Safety policies are not working in support of the women and men who actually patrol the streets. Theres nothing i see in that survey thats much different in terms of the survey that we ourselves conducted two years ago and were working to address. Both the Police Commissioner and the mayor today cited ongoing training, new and Better Technology and equipment, and additional officers as part of the citys ongoing effort to address rank and file concerns. Were doing a lot of the things that our officers need to do their job better and our exemplary job. Mayor de blasio also said today he doesnt put much faith in the survey because he says he doesnt believe it represents the attitude of the majority of nypd officers. He also said that he accused the pba rather of complaining instead of coming up with workable solutions. The pba expected to talk more about its survey results tomorrow. Eyewitness News ReporterShirleen Allicot joins us live in New Brunswick high school the family of oscar says if they didnt so happen to see that cell phone video on social media they would have never known the extent of what happened to their son. They say this was not a fight like the school said it was. This was a full on brutal attack. They say now their son is afraid to go back to school. On my way to my lunch period i was approached by a kid i barely knew. Reporter cell phone video captures the brutal takedown on thursday. You see 15yearold oscar defenseless as a much larger teen, a junior at the school, savagely beats him in the hallway. I had no idea what was happening. I couldnt react at that time. Reporter the assaults we cannot show you, its so violent. Goes on for 26 seconds. A Security Guard finally pushes the teen away from him. Police say the dispute over a female student. I was being told that he was hearing rumors about me talking bad which i never was. Outraged with how it was handled. They say no ambulance was called for their son. That school never tell me oh, you need ambulance or something. Never. There was a female Security Guard that in the video you can actually see her, not that clear, but you can see her. She was witnessing the whole thing going on. Reporter the attacker, who they say is on the wrestling team, faces Assault Charges and was suspended from the school. Officials issued us this statement. We can say protocols were followed and the safety and security of our students remains a top priority. We can also report the incident was immediately reported to the New Brunswick police department. They have kids at that school, they say this is always happening. It happened to me three months ago and the school didnt do nothing about it because i didnt say nothing. Oscar suffered a broken nose, he lost a tooth. His parents are not taking this lightly. They want to see that student expelled. The widow of a brooklyn shopkeeper who was brutally murdered seven years ago is making a plea to the australian government. Vladimir tolstoy was killed in 2009 during a robbery of his shop. Today tolstoys wife and senator Chuck Schumer demanded hed be brought back. Two years since he was arrested in australia and we do have an extradition treaty with australia but it is taking too darn long. Schumer says hes going to pressure the u. S. Justice department to bring him back. A yonkers man accused of murdering his neighbor earlier this year is pleading not guilty. Prosecutors say carmel mills choked david pinock inside his apartment during an ongoing dispute. Police say by the time they arrived to the apartment, he had no pulse. He died weeks later from his injuries. Mills is charged with murder, strangling. Police are looking for a man who hit a man and left him lying in the streets. Is the man was found and taken to the hospital in critical condition. The victims name has not been released. Every Public School in newark is now being tested for lead. 30 schools have already found high levels of lead in their drinking water. New york times reports that newark officials knew about the problem years ago. A year and a half ago the district ordered all water fountains and faucets be flushed for two minutes each day in order to reduce the risk of contamination. Information is being mischaracterized. Ive been watching people, when they go from the shelter of the buildings and theyre walking west east or east west and they hit that wind coming down the avenue, immediately the umbrellas are going inside out and they really have a tough time fighting it especially if youre walking uptown. If youre walking downtown, you get a nice tailwind. Light rain. Easterly wind 21 to 32 miles per hour. You have rain and drizzle as we go through the overnight hours. I think we can get in to one more period of steadier rain during the evening hours especially from the city on north and east and then it will taper off to drizzle overnight. By tomorrow morning just some drizzle and some areas of fog. I think the clouds definitely hang tough but i do think well have thin spots in the clouds, at least brightening in the afternoon where our numbers get in the mid and upper 50s. 15 degrees warmer than it is right now. Rain is starting to pivot out. Steadier over the island but there are short range computer models suggesting there could be more banding rains that will try to form over central new jersey. That may actually not happen. At that point wed just have drizzle the rest of the night. Then we look at this system which keeps us with a shower threat in to tomorrow morning but also thin spots in the clouds and temperatures here in the 60s. We should do pretty well tomorrow. Then our next system. Thats for wednesday afternoon. This is another kind of multifaceted system. We have not just one piece but it affects us over a couple of days wednesday in to the day on friday. Gov trabz transformed a High School Gym on long island in to a barber shop. Students are going bald, shaving their heads to raise money for cancer research. Eyewitness News Reporter n. J. Burkett tweeted out this photo from the event in plainview, old bethpage. He has more on the students and who they hope to help. Reporter the line was longer than you think. And in just three hours, nearly 100 students and teachers from the plainview old bethpage district had their head shaved for a very important cause. Patrick belport teaches 5th grade. Its a great fundraiser. Helps other people. It really makes me feel great as well. They started this event here four years ago. And every year since then theyve raised tens of thousands of dollars for childhood cancer. The event relies on donations. The money to benefit the st. Named for those who are willing to go bald on st. Patricks day. The reason why people shave their heads for this is many kids lose their hair when they undergo treatments for cancer. A man chasing a woman down the street. As she jumped in to another car trying to escape, she was shot and killed. Then the gunman later turned the gun on himself. We talked to people who heard the gunshots and were eyewitnesses to what happened immediately after. That was personal. Somebody she must have knew the dude. Reporter Desiree Ramsey ran outside 7 30 this morning to figure out what was going on. A woman had been shot by a man who then fled. The woman had tried to find safety with the woman she did not know who was parking up the block. That woman was parking her car to go to work in the morning. The other girl was running from down the block, up the block, saw the woman in the car, and went for help. The woman who had been parking was frozen with fear and police say cut by flying glass as the gunshots shattered her car window. She waited for the police and you saw the girl laying there. Reporter a manhunt for the gunman ended a few hours later and 3 miles away at mercer park. Im just sad right now. Reporter a man who calls himself shy jay heard the gunshot and said his sister called police as he ran outside. When i heard the gunshot, i looked out the window. When i looked out the window, i seen the little kid get off the swing and run and thats when id seen the guy slump. Child. No. No. Park by themselves. And they saw that . Yes. So sad that those children were witness to that. Theyre still investigating this because it was a Domestic Violence murder. No word on whether or not the woman who was the victim had a gunman. The woman who was hit by the flying glass, the shattered
