Have a little bit of a breather and with that in mind, what im going to do is show you these rules again, some tornado safety tips so you know whats going on and know how to handle everything. Tornado safety tips. Move to the lowest level, basement is best wo b best, obviously. If you have basements, great but the majority of us dont have a basement but stay on the first floor and not the second floor. You saw how the tree went through the house if you were watching at 5 00. If youre on the second floor, floor first and stops. If youve got a kid sleeping upstairs or playing upstairs, move him downstairs when you get big winds because it goes to the second floor first and probably not get to the first floor. Go to an interior room like a bathroom or closet. Bathroom is better if its interior, away from the outside of the structure because if the structure falls around you, youre in the bathtub, the bathtub is solid enough and if pillows, then youre safe in the bathroom. Stay away from window. Stuff can get blown through windows. Cover the stuff with your hand. I talked about that with it being in the bathtub. Leave a mobile home and seek shelter elsewhere. I think weve learned that again today and even just a ditch is better than being in a mobile home or a vehicle. That can be a bad situation. In terms of the threat for severe thunderstorms for the rest of the evening hours. Heres something called cape. Its a measure of lift and its through the roof in terms of lift with water in the atmosphere and cold air aloft, what happens is the water in the atmosphere condenses to form clouds and lots of rain and also creates a lot of spin with it as well. Theres where we are at 6 00 on offshore by 9 00 and i think its lagging behind. There is where things are by 7 00 and push it up here. By 8 00, i think its right on into the Hampton Roads and then by 9 00, 10 00 and 11 00 we have a breather for now but things pick back up again in a couple hours. Ill have more in a few minutes. Stephen a. we have crews checking the damage thats left behind. Anita we want to take a look around now with jason marks. Jason i believe were standing in the worst of it here in waverly and let me step out of the way and show you whats going on and where we believe state police are confirming three people died. Thats the laundromat and were told this has been in the community for years and you see at one time was a brick by witnesses it picked bricks up. You see a mobile home damaged and on the other side there used to be a mobile home there and its just gone. Theres nothing there anymore. Thats where the three people came from. Witnesses are telling us it was two men and a child inside that home when the storm came through. I dont know if you can show this over here. A car is in the distance you can see with the door open and trunk open, that car used to be up here in front of that yellow house. You see how strong that storm was to blow that car over there. The big news today in waverly, three people dead. A lot of damage. Well continue to sift through the details here and try to figure out more about the people that passed away in this terrible, terrible storm. Well have the latest for you coming up in just a few minutes stephanie thank you, jason. Were checking on reports of Power Outages of this storm. As of 5 00 p. M. , at least 2,000 customers in southeast virginia are out. Anita hampton and newport news have the most. Thank you for joining us. Will you tell us about whats going on and the work you all are doing to restore power to people . Absolutely. You all have been staying on top of it. We appreciate that. The storm has been beating us up a little bit in Hampton Roads but our system is holding up pretty well and our line crews are working hard to restore power. We have extra personnel working at every local office and theyre making a lot of progress. For example, at 4 30 this afternoon, we had 3,7800 customers without power and now were down to over 1,500 customers still waiting to get their lights back on. Stephanie we know weve had some of the major areas, new north news and norfolk, do you neighborhoods were hard hit . We had a problem in the granby street air here 21st street and 1,a 500 customers out in that area and our crews got them on before 5 00 and was a big block of customers we were able to get back on and that was great news and now theyre on to the next. Stephanie i know a while ago when we were on at 4 00 towards the end of our show, it was also being reported there was a power outage for several of the streetlights in newport news. Can you give us an update on that . Bonita we have a lot of scattered outages throughout the peninsula area. Thats one of the biggest areas were experiencing trouble and when we have Power Outages, it affects things that depend on electricity, including the traffic lights. Were works as hard as we can. The falling tree limbs are the greatest threat to our system now because of the strong wind gusts that were having and that increases the potential also can be very dangerous. Stephanie we appreciate your time and the hard work virginia power is doing to get the lights and electricity restored back for everyone. Thanks for joining us. Anita remember, folks, if you have a print or youre watching now and you lose power, were online, too, with your phone you can stream whats going on so you can be in the know of whats happening. We do have another line of storms coming through. One of the biggest story lines is coming from waverly and where liz kilmer is. Stephanie shes at a command post in waverly and i understand youre waiting for a Media Briefing there . Liz thats right. Were down the road where the command center was set up at the Prince George electric corporation off route 460. Right now police have just arrived here and a spokes woman is being briefed by investigators right now and were just waiting on more details. Police have confirmed for us that three people are dead. Were working to get you more information surrounding who they are. If you just heard, my colleague jason marks, he was reporting that accccding to witnesses, those victims are two men and a child. So of course we have to confirm that with police and were working to get that information for you. We were, as i said, down the street at a command center set up by route 460 and mayfield. Lots of First Responders there, police, paramedics, firefighters standing by. A large part of it i posted a video of the command center from our twitter page and were asked to leave because it was for First Responder vehicles only and were asked to come down to Prince George electric corporation where other media and state police are here and were just waiting for them to come and provide more information and were working to ask the tough questions and we want to find out more again about those people who died. Were told three are confirmed dead here in waverly. As soon as we can. Back to you. Stephanie thank you, liz, giving us ants happening in waverly and well whats happeni stephanie back now with more images from this storm that devastated parts of Hampton Roads, specifically waverly this afternoon but we also have some flooding we wanted to show you from matthews county. Anita so many different types of dynamics were dealing with from this first round of storms that have come through today and we have to emphasize thats the first round. Matthews county, the flooding theyre dealing with can barely see the streets going through this particular area that were looking at here. You can see how high its going up on the side of buildings as well. Stephanie that garage there, matthews obviously dealing with a lot of water. Seen in other areas like newport news where weve seen a tree that came down on a house earlier today and here we go with another shot. Anita storm damage now, six people displaced. Brandi cummings is there and stephanie we tip to follow breaking news with Brandi Cummings live in newport news. Anita brandi is looking at tree damage there that really affected a family. Tell us, its a huge tree behind you. Brandi absolutely is, stephanie and anita. We can tell you that first of all, that family of six that were in the house when the tree fell are pretty thankful they all got out and are safe and a mom, a dad and four children and a baby, two months old. Taking a different angle look at the tree, can you see just those strong winds came through here and really snapped the tree in half. Theres already a crew assessing the damage to the house. Theres a power line down here in the back yard. Now, earlier we talked to the father of those children in the house and he told us that this back area that you see, this is actually their back bedroom. He told me that had this happened late at night they may not have been able to make it out of the house. So theyre pretty thankful that they did. You can see here all this damage to the house. We heard cracking sounds even since weve been here so not sure if the tree is pressing down or going down anymore. But we want to let you hear a portion of that interview from when we spoke to the father earlier this afternoon. Mike just pretty much we heard a loud choice and i went to the back room, to look out the boined at the window at the tree to see i thought it was the shed and next thing we know the tree is coming in the bedroom. Been here about a year. Mike pretty much. Weve lost everything now. Brandi stephanie and anita, that family is having to rebuild. Again, full damage here in the yard, in the back yard here of this house on 80th street in newport news. Crews are assessing the damage and preparing to put tarps over the home to protect it from any other weather that we may see here in the coming days. Live in newport news, now back to you. Now your superdoppler 10 forecast with chief meteorologist don slater. Anita the important thing is you can always rebuild a home. You can always get more possessions but we are talking about a deadly situation in waverly. Stephanie with the seriousness of today, its more important than ever to listen to whats coming up tonight. Don and for those in waverly, or are going to help in waverly, lots of times we see people hurt in the cleanup action because theyve stepped on nails and also overexerting you do want to watch out for those of you. Plus, we have a secondary line of thunderstorms that will be moving in, adding insult to injury and areas open to the elements are going to get drenched coming up in the next couple hours towards the waverly area. Again, not many people watching us at this point from that area because theyre all very busy but if you are watching us from the waverly area, you might want to pass the word around theres a line of thunderstorms that will be moving on in. We examine whats going on. We go to waverly and show you the storm and heres where things are right now and where things were. Just after the storm hit, 2 42 in the afternoon, it hit about 2 30 and again you see the area towards the waverly area and basically at 2 42 it was moving on towards western suri county on up into here is where the tornado was located and developed very, very rapidly. And in the Hampton Roads cities we saw areas again that were expected to just fall apart. It was unlikely that theyd north carolina, and severe thunderstorm warnings. But then we had Tornado Warnings out of these areas as they redeveloped as a teardrop shaped area that developed right on in over the Great Dismal Swamp and lifted northward through norfolk and the other area, lifted northward towards the peninsula and matthews county and continued that heavy, heavy rain we saw over matthews county. Again, thats what was going on. And the area i showed you last time out that developed here and there was a toronto warning with it. Here it comes, and its fizzling out to the north of elizabeth city. Thankfully. We do still have action going on to the west of us over the richmond area or very close to richmond and that continues to move eastward. Im going to storm track is in a rough way as it moves eastward, for example, towards, lets say murfreesboro at 7 17 and towards suffolk at 8 00 and hickory at 8 30 and towards the oceanfront at around 9 00. You see it again moving out towards the north end of newport news and 7 38 and to cape charles around 8 30. This one has a lot of lightning with it and its kind of a fragmented line. You see the areas here and there but there are all kind of warnings coming up out of that and thats round 2 for the evening hours. You see the stuff moving through. And weve got a break. By 6 00, half an hour or so from now, over the richmond area, over south hill and the emporia area. By 7 00, its headed towards williamsburg and almost there and 8 00 its over the peninsula and parts of the south side and by 9 00, theres where we are with it and by 10 00 its starting to move on out to sea so were looking pretty good once we get past about 10 00 this evening. In the long run, heres the 9 00 hour, a version of future track. It moves on through. Anything else behind it . A few clouds. Not that much. Its going to be cooler. And one other thing, its going to be rather windy. 9 00 this evening. Its right on basically through the top of our area where you see that wind shift line where that front continues out to sea. We see things rather breezy tomorrow morning and throughout the day, out and out windy and will drop on down and continue breezy and by friday the winds will drop off considerably and see a northerly wind. Heres whats going on. Seeing a few breaks in the clouds and cameras shaking around a little bit because its still windy and around 70 degrees, 73 degrees, right where we thought it would be for a High Temperature today. Very windy throughout the area. You see the current temperature readings, 69 and 73. Theres cooler air off to the west after theyve seen the rain move on through and you see that wind direction and wind speeds around 23, 24, 28 miles an hour, gusting at times above 30. So were going to see the secondary line move on through. So stay with us for that. Well be here throughout the evening hours. A little cooler but not bad and back at 6 00 with an update. I do everything on the internet. But, its kind of slow. I just downloaded 600 photos in 60 seconds. Thats seriously better. husband were out of 2 i wonder what else could be better around here . husband i heard that. Switching to Better Internet is now easier than ever. My truck went up in the air and the glass started caving in and i saw everything coming off the roof and i said whoa, i hope this isnt it. I didnt know what to do. It was scary. I dont know, a good 10 minutes. I dont remember exactly. It happened so quick. I saw the trees swerving. Im lucky. Its completely devastating. Its horrible. Cars were crumpled on the highway. It picked up cars and threw them in the ditch. So it really did some damage. Anita three people now confirmed dead from whats likely a tornado that went through waverly. But were also seeing damage from several other areas as well. Stephanie this is hugo streak in norfolk. Viewers say theres no power there. You see a large tree down in that neighborhood. Anita on to newport news. They have more damage here from trees that have come down. This is 80th street where the home youre looking at has been condemned. Six people are displaced because of this. Stephanie were told those are four children in that home, including a 2monthold baby and thank goodness they all made it out safely. We want to thank you for sending your pictures to us to report it at wavy. Com. Weve been getting in. Stephanie you can those well have more for you now, from the station on your side, this is wavy news 10. We are starting our 6 00 show with the story still developing. Sad news to report. Three people now dead from we need to tell you we are not done yet with the bad weather. We will show you some of that damage in waverly in just a moment. Just about all of us were under a Tornado Warning this afternoon. Don slater has been on the air since about 3 00 within up eight on these new storms. Don we will first give you an idea where the waverly storm was a couple of hours ago. Thats where it was just north of waverly, exiting the region. Definitely a thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado. It was questionable as to whether they could survive with this rain cooled air throughout the area into the Hampton Roads cities. But again, they did. We have another area that developed to the south that is it develops right on into here but now it has just fizzled out. The secondary line of thunderstorms is likely to move in. I think it will move out to sea by 9 00 or 10 00 tonight but as it continues to move on end, it is moving eastward at about 3540 miles an hour east northeastward between the murfreesboro area around 7 24, and then up into southern sections of chesapeake at 8 30 and out to sea by around 9 00. Emporia really in the next half hour. Downtown portsmouth and chesapeake around 8 10 and 8 15 730 toward williamsburg and newport news. So again that area is still moving in. We will watch out for that very carefully. There are those tornado safety tips. All kinds of warnings out there as that line moves on in. Interior room windows, cover your heads and leave mobile homes. Tom what appears to be the worst hit area is where two people were killed three People Killed in waverly. Nicole 2300 people live in that area. Liz has the latest from the state police. Its absolutely devastating, as you said three people are now confirmed dead. Sergeant, what can you tell us about these victims and where they were found . Currently we are confirming they are three male victims at
