Pteranodon sitting on her nest she heard a scratching and said. Oh, boy my eggs are hatching one by one her kids popped free baby pteranodons 1, 2, 3 ill name you tiny, shiny, and don. But tiny said. Wait theres one more, mom last little baby was a different size with teeth and a tail and big green eyes he didnt look anything like the rest what am i doing in a pteranodon nest . But dear, old mrs. Pteranodon said. Oh, this is your family, and im your mom. You may be different, but were all creatures. All dinosaurs have different features. Come on, buddy. Well take a vacation. Dinosaur train dinosaur train dinosaur train dinosaur train were gonna ride ride, ride, ride, ride [whistle blows] the dinosaur train [roaring] [captioning made possible by the jim henson company] whahoo, ooh, ooh ooh, ooh [squawk] i cant believe it were taking the dinosaur train under the ocean i dont get it how does the train go under the ocean . Well, kids, the train goes through a tunnel that goes down under the water. Its made of glass, so well be able to see everything around us. Ooh you mean, well see all the fish . Yep hooray i love fish and then, well arrive in an underwater train station. Its like a big, glass cave. Whoa a tunnel and a cave this is gonna be the best trip ever [cheering] underwater hey, buddy. That wasnt your usual buddy cheer. Arent you excited to go under the ocean . Well, sure, tiny. Im always glad to go on the dinosaur train, but maybe im more of a land kind of dinosaur. I dont see how there could be much to see down there. What . Theres lots to see down there. Its like a whole other world. You can dive and swim and fly over the ocean. Im just saying its probably more of a pteranodon thing. Ha ha ha oh, buddy, you just wait. [train whistle blows] here comes the dinosaur train [squawk] and look, kids whoa its pulling a new car why, thats right, buddy. Its the aqua car for carrying our seagoing creatures like elasmosaurus. Like me hi. Im Elmer Elasmosaurus hi, elmer were the pteranodon family. Hello, pteranodon family ready for some underwater adventure . Yes all rightie, then all aboard [whistle blows] hang onto your hats, folks. Were heading out to sea ooh [squawk] its like were flying over the water. Thats right, shiny, but with all the comforts of the dinosaur train. Mr. Conductor, can you tell me what its gonna be like under the ocean . Well, i could tell you, buddy, but hows about i sing it to you . Yeah a song whahoo, ooh, ooh ooh, ooh oh, were going to the ocean gonna have some fun gonna introduce some sea life to everyone gonna check out some creatures that we never met and compare some features that we havent seen yet so come on along with me were taking dinosaurs under the sea while the dinosaurs are on the land and breathing the air theres a whole other world down under there yeah, were going in the ocean gonna take a peek well be doing some exploring gonna look all week so come on along with me were taking dinosaurs under the sea whahoo, ooh, ooh ooh, ooh elasmosaurus yeah cretoxyrhina wow michelinoceras whoo pliosaurus yeah so come on along with me were taking dinosaurs under the sea yeah, come on along with me were taking dinosaurs under the sea whahoo, ooh, ooh ooh, ooh cowabunga hoo hoo [cheering] i like that song thank you, thank you very much. Ahem. Now, buddy, to be specific, todays undersea adventure will take us to elasmosaurus reef station in the middle of our own western interior sea to meet some local cretaceous creatures called elasmosaurus. Hey theres one of those in the aqua car right now. Youre absolutely right, buddy, and if you want, you kids can go back and talk to him. Hes very friendly. Oh can we, mom . Please [squawk] sure, and then come right back hello, laura the giganotosaurus hello, kids. Have you met the elasmosaurus in the new aqua car . Oh. Elmer . Hes right over there. You mean, me . Hello, elmer elmer, this is buddy, shiny, and don, and im tiny pleased to meet you. Are you riding the train to elasmosaurus reef station . I sure am. Thats where my family lives. Ive been traveling on the dinosaur train to visit other oceans. Heh heh. Wait there are other oceans . Yeah, don lots of oceans. The world is full of them. Ive become interested in oceans. Some are deeper, some are colder, some are warmer, some are saltier, some are even different colors. I like oceans, too i like diving into them to catch fish. Thats what we pteranodons do. How about you, buddy . Me . Im a t. Rex. Im a land animal. Ive never been under the ocean before. Oh, youre in for a treat. Wait till you see whats under the water. Youll love it really . It just looks flat. It doesnt look like theres anything down below there. Oh, there is. Stick with me, buddy. Youll see the sea. Your home may be under the sea, but i observe that you can breathe air just like us. Right. All elasmosaurus are air breathers. Does that mean you can run around on the land . With these flippers . I can barely get around. Naw. I dont like to be on land. Heh heh thats funny. I dont really like to be in the water. What . buddy, how can you not love the water . I love everything about waterbeing wet, playing in it. Ha ha ha swimming in it, fishing in it. I love fish so elasmosaurus and pteranodons both love fish, but were really different, too. Elmer has a really long neck. Yep more than half of me is neck. Hey how you doing . [giggling] i have a hypothesis you mean, an idea you can test . Yep since land animals like brachiosaurus use their long necks to reach plants that are way up high, maybe you can eat tall underwater plants. Hmm. Im not sure if thats why i have a long neck, buddy, but my long neck tells me all right the tunnel is coming up. Youre right, elmer. I see it, too. Time tunnel approaching, folks, and this one will take us under the sea [squawk] come on, you guys. Lets go back and sit with mom and dad. Bye bye next stop elasmosaurus reef station under the cretaceous western interior sea. Whoa [squawk] pretty neat, huh, buddy . I had no idea how amazing it is under the sea. Look at all these fish. There must be as many kinds of animals in the ocean as there are on land. Ha ha ha i told him, but he wouldnt listen. Ha ha ha [squawk] look theyre huge wow whoohoo neato this place is so cool hey theres my family hi hey, elmer welcome home [thunk] [gasp] whee this is fun look out below come on, elmer. Lets get some lunch watch this, you guys ohh [squawk] there they are whoa i agree what a fishing technique ive got to try that when we get home. [squawk] don, pteranodons arent deep divers like elasmosaurus. Yeah, and we sure dont have those kind of necks. Yeah. Oh, well. This is fun hey, guys what do you think . Fantastic but i guess my hypothesis was wrong. Your long neck isnt for eating tall underwater plants. Its for fishing. Ha ha thats for sure [train whistle blows] ha ha theres the train whistle kids we should get on board. Lets say our goodbyes. Aw hey you guys swim fast. I wanted to say goodbye and get a breath of air. We can hold our breath for a long time but not forever. Thanks for visiting bye, elmer bye, elasmosaurus family all aboard. [whistle blows] oh hey, tiny, look [both sigh] wow what a day. So, buddy. Now how do you like it under the sea . I love it. Today, i met a creature who breathes air like we do and lives under the ocean. And they love fish like we do. And theres lots more to discover, buddy we can take the dinosaur train under all the oceans in all the different time periods and meet all kinds of different sea creatures. I cant wait lets keep exploring under the sea take it away, mr. The conductor. So come on along with me were taking dinosaurs under the sea yeah, come on along with me were taking dinosaurs under the sea whahoo, ooh, ooh ooh, ooh cowabunga hoo hoo hi, there. Im dr. Scott the paleontologist, and this is elasmosaurus. Elasmosaurus. Elasmosaurus elasmosaurus. Elasmosaurus elasmosaurus was a giant marine reptile from the cretaceous time period. The word marine means that it lived in the ocean. Now what do you notice first about elasmosaurus . It has a really long neck. Absolutely. The neck of elasmosaurus was over 20 feet long. Thats more than half the length of its body. Can you think of a dinosaur that has a long neck . Brachiosaurus. Thats right. Brachiosaurus and elasmosaurus both had long necks even though one lived in the water and one lived on the land. Scientists think that the long neck of elasmosaurus helped it hunt for fish. Lets go fishing wow you guys are great swimmers. Because of its large size, elasmosaurus was probably a slow swimmer, so it may have swum under Large Schools of fish and then used its long neck to reach up and grab its prey with those long, sharp teeth. Whoa ok. Keep watching for more dinosaur discoveries. Din of all the dinosaurs you might meet some are big, some petite but the way i make my day complete i stomp in the swamp with my dinosaur feet with my great big stomping dinosaur feet rawwr yeah rawwr my great big whomping, stomping dinosaur feet rawwr hello, folks. Its me the conductor. Today, the pteranodon family is having all the species in the neighborhood over for a big block party, so come on along with me on the dinosaur train. All aboard have another leaf, mrs. Lambeosaurus. Thanks. I cant get over your magnificent view of the sea, mrs. Pteranodon. Yes. Isnt it nice . It seems a little different every day. I am so glad we moved to pteranodon terrace. I cant wait to meet all the other species that live around here. [squawk] what if our families threw a block party and invited the other creatures from the neighborhood . That way, you could meet them all at once. What a wonderful idea, a Dinosaur Block Party were gonna have a Dinosaur Block Party . That sounds like fun. We could all compare features. And play games. And have contests and eat bugs but arent the bugs our neighbors, too . I guess. I never thought about it before. Enough about bugs weve got a party to plan, and i love parties lets have the party on the beach its a great place for a picnic. Block party Block Party Block Party block party did someone say, block party . Yeah were inviting all the species from the neighborhood. Great. Uh, are they here yet . Nope. We have to actually invite them first. Hey lets go to the train station and tell the conductor about it. He can help us tell everyone that lives at the big pond. Thats a wonderful idea. After all, the big pond is right down the coast, so those creatures are our neighbors, too. Yeah, like adam adocus and Eugene Euoplocephalus and patricia palaeobatrachus shes a frog and the bees the bees . Well, we can ask them. Theyre all welcome to our block party. Can i help somehow with the food maybe . Oh, yeah what kind of food should we have . Im not sure, buddy. Theres so much food well have to find when you consider all the different creatures. Some are herbivores. Like lambeosaurus. We eat plants. And some are carnivores. Like t. Rexes we eat meat. We could make the party a potluck. Whats a potluck . Well, that means all the different guests bring their own Favorite Foods to the picnic. That way, well be able to learn about each creature by the food they bring. What a great idea we just show up ha ha ha i love it come on, team lets fly to the station and spread the word about our big Block Party Block PartyBlock Party Block Party whoo ha ha ha a Dinosaur Block Party, you say . Yep, and youre all invited. We were hoping that you could tell everyone at the big pond about it. Our next stop. Its right in our neighborhood. And dont forget to tell him its going to be potluck that means each guest brings their own food to the picnic what fun. Ill bring some insects. Ill bring fruits and nuts and some meat [squawk] laura, will you come to our block party, too . I would love to come [cheering] all aboard well be there soon, pteranodons bye its getting late. I wonder where [squawk] oh, that must be the kids now. Were here whoohoo [indistinct chatter] come on, laura what a view, mrs. Pteranodon. Thanks so much for inviting me to your block party. Its our pleasure, laura. Come on down to the beach, everyone. Follow me whoohoo wow pretty much everybody from the neighborhood came to our block party. What about adam adocus . Im acoming im a turtle. We move very slowly. Hi, adam ohh heh heh heh oh, hi, buddy and tiny. Everyones gone down to the beach. Come on, adam. [squawk] uh, ill be right down. This is so great everyones eating their own favorite food yep the carnivores brought meat, and the herbivores brought plants and the troodons brought both. Were omnivores. Even the bees found something to eat. Theyre eating the nectar from inside the flowers. Yeah the bees help the flowers grow, and then the flowers and plants feed the herbivores. I have a hypothesis. The different plants and creatures that live here in our neighborhood all depend on each other to live. Excellent hypothesis, buddy, and the creatures living in this neighborhood all share the place they live in together. Its called a habitat. A habitat good word it is a good word. To make a habitat work, you need everyone from the tiniest little plant to the biggest meateater. We all have an important part to play in what we call our ecosystem. Ecosystem an even better word. Oh ohh ggg, ggg, ggg, ggg. Hey whos ready to play some games . We are um, has the picnic started . Actually, adam, were about to have a race. Good. Count me in. Just kidding. Ha ha ha. [all laughing] bbbrrr ok. Who in our habitat is the fastest runner . Id say the theropods like you, buddy, and daphne and the troodons. Weve got toe claws for traction. [squawk] some creatures in this habitat are fast fliers. Why dont we make it a running and flying relay race . Yeah ready, relay racers . First, the runners race across the beach and touch your teammates hand, and then the fliers fly back here to the finish line. Got it on your mark, get set, goooo tada ooh, boy good race, shiny. Aw, i ate too many insects just before the race. Hard to win a running race on a full stomach hey now how about the fisheaters in our habitat show off our diving skills . Hi hope im in time for the diving part of the program. Hi, jess [giggling] hey i see some fish over there. [cheering] lets play what neighborhood creature am i . Ill start. I have a flat beak, and i reach way up into the trees to eat leaves, and i have a crest that hoots. That would be our local hadrosaur, a lambeosaurus. That would be me [hoot] my turn. Im covered all over with bony armor, so nothing can hurt me, and im really good at dinoball. Thats our local ankylosaur Eugene Euoplocephalus. Heh heh heh im covered with bony armor all right. My turn i live in this neighborhood. I hunt for food every day, and i am an important part of its habitat. Hmm. Hmm . Ooh hmm. Hmm. Is it all of us . Ding ding you are correct, sir, and its always been this way, in the triassic, jurassic, and cretaceous. Every neighborhood in every time period has its own ecosystem where every creature plays his or her part. Its true. I just got to eat trees. But you cant eat all of them because if all the trees are gone it will cause problems for the other neighbors. Heh heh heh you bet. After mr. Lambeosaurus ate the tree i was living in, i had to go and find another one. If he ate all of them, id have nowhere to live oh, come on, you two. Hug it out. [sniffing] aw im glad we could all have this little talk. You know, this reminds me of a song. A song . sing it, please oh, i dont know. Everyones full of food and all pooped out from running around and playing games. You dont want to hear me. Come on sing it please well, a bunch of different species of dinosaur came looking for a party on the sandy shore some came swimming some came running then we all sat and learned a Little Something about our habitat were having a block party 1 and 2 and 3 block party its you and you and me block party you like this and i like that everybodys part of this big habitat everyones got features that are good for surviving like some of us are really good at swooping and diving and some of us are better at sneaking and hiding we all fit together like i like this and i like that were part of a big habitat its all good wow, it will be hearty when we all come arockin at the Dinosaur Block Party block party 1 and 2 and 3 block party its you and you and me block party you like this and i like that everybodys part of this big habitat yes, everybodys part of this big habitat yeah [cheering] hi, there. Im dr. Scott the paleontologist, and this is an ecosystem. Pteranodon terrace is an ecosystem. In fact everywhere you look in nature, youll find ecosystems. An ecosystem is made up of the local plants, animals, and other organisms that link together to make a circle of life. The circle starts with plants, which get their energy from the sun. Herbivores eat the plants, and then carnivores eat the herbivores. The remains of all these plants and animals then become food for insects and other tiny creatures, which make food for more plants. This happened back in the time of the dinosaurs, and its still happening today. Everything in an ecosystem is connected to Everything Else in a circle of life. Circle of life in an ecosystem, everything becomes food for Everything Else. Ok. Get outside, get into nature, and make your own discoveries. Nature, and make your own discoveries.
