Hundreds of people packed this meeting on Student Assignment last night. Parents said they wanted to keep their children in neighborhood schools. Russell is live and on your side. Why is this issue getting such a strong reaction . Well, maureen, a combination of fear and a lack of communication. You know, forced busing has taken on a life of its own especially in south charlotte. Tonight we are asking parents where did that thought come from . And is cms to blame for parents thinking that way . This meeting in south attention. It. They hear about Student Assignment all the time especially from moms and dads fearful of forced busing. Parents freaking out thinking that i will have to move. I will have to go to union county. This couple is concerned about forced busing. Their kids neighborhood schools are south meck high and middle. They do not want their kids on long bus rides nor do they want kids commuting either. Children and bus them to another school, well, those kids become the focus of the administration and all the kids at the higher levels will be left behind. The School District has not mentioned forced busing so i asked the couple where did that fear originate . Probably from another parent. And those parents are creating petitions and selling the tshirts with the hashtag no forced busing. It creates more paranoia. Part of peoples overreaction is that cms has not said this is what we are going to do. Vicechair agreesism i think our school board could be doing a better job of communicating where we are. While forced busing may be dead on arrival this couple is more worried about the School District changing boundaries. They moved into the home so their kids could attend providence high school
