Pope francis and President Trump met for the first time today at the vatican and just look at the popes expression in this picture. [ laughter ] only trump could turn the cool pope into mike from breaking bad. [ light laughter ] [ growl ] thats right. Pope francis met with President Trump today at the vatican. Bless you my child, said the pope to the driver that took trump away. [ laughter ] fleet week begins today here in new york. When thousands of Navy Officers take leave in the city and where dozens of women will find out they were lied to by the ice cream man. [ light laughter ] House Speaker paul ryan said today that he does not agree with President Trumps claims that former fbi director james comey is a nut job. While he does agree that Kellyanne Conway might be a nutcracker. [ laughter and applause ] i like it. This according to bryces power point entitled why i should be allowed to do plays, dad. [ laughter ] an ohio man recently proposed to his girlfriend at the finish line of a marathon and she can never find out that what he really said was, will you carry me . [ laughter and applause ] experts experts are warning that drinking detox teas like those endorsed by celebrities could reduce the effectiveness of Birth Control. But remember the only truly effective form of Birth Control is telling people youre drinking detox teas. [ laughter ] and finally, new York Governor Andrew Cuomo this week announced a 1 million reward for anyone who can find a solution to new york citys subway delays. He then accidentally dropped the money on the tracks where it caught fire and shut down the d train. [ laughter and applause ] ladies and gentlemen, we have a great show for you tonight. He is one of the all time greats. You know him from netlixs house of cards and a million other things. Kevin spacey is here tonight. [ cheers and applause ] she is the star of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and a total delight, ellie kemper is back on the show. [ cheers and applause ] and we are joined tonight by the chair of the Democratic National committee, tom perez is joining us to talk about where that party is going. Before we get to all that, the evidence continues to mount that President Trump actively tried to obstruct justice in the russia investigation but even as trump scandals pile up, he is still capable of doing immense damage as we saw when trump released his first full budget yesterday. For more on this, its time for a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] seth trump has been on his nine day trip to europe and the middle east. And on wednesday he stopped by the vatican to completely bum out the pope. [ light laughter ] look at this picture. The pope may be catholic but that face is saying, oy, gevalt, what a schmuck. [ laughter ] but even when trump is out of the country, he cant seem to escape the ongoing russia investigation. In fact, things have gotten so bad trump is now starting to lawyer up. Breaking tonight, cnn confirms that President Trump is expected to hire a personal lawyer outside of his White House Legal Team to represent him in the russia investigation. Seth thats right. Trump hired a personal lawyer and based on how much cable tv he watches, i wouldnt be surprised if he went with cellino and barnes. [ laughter ] what . Theyre not together anymore . Fine, get me suits. [ laughter and applause ] in particular, we keep getting more and more evidence that trump actively tried to obstruct justice in the russia investigation. Remember, first it was reported that he asked fbi director james comey for a loyalty pledge as if he were don corleone. When in fact, hes dumb corleone. Ill make him an offer he cant accept. [ light laughter ] comey refused that and also refused to drop his investigation into Michael Flynn so trump fired him. And on monday, we learned that comey wasnt the only high ranking official that trump tried continue to influence. The other bombshell report in the washington post. President trump asked two of the nations top intelligence officials in march to help him push back against an fbi investigation into possible coordination between his campaign and the russian government. Trump made separate appeals to the director of National Intelligence daniel coats and to admiral michael s. Rogers, the director of the National Security agency, urging them to publicly deny the existence of any evidence of collusion. Seth now we know about trumps interactions with comey. Because comey wrote detailed memos about all of his conversations with the president. So, how do we know about this latest interaction between trump and the nsa director, mike rogers . Well, once again, according to the washington post, trumps conversation with rogers was documented in an internal memo. Trump is so crazy every time he leaves the room people go, damn, i gotta write this [ bleep ] down. [ laughter and applause ] of course trump doesnt write anything down. He can barely write his own name. Look at his signature. [ light laughter ] looks like a failed polygraph test. [ light laughter ] even trumps own hand knows when hes lying. Mexico will pay for the wall. But heres the thing about all this. It is tempting to get excited that trump is under investigation. That some law makers are openly talking about impeachment and that his approval numbers are low and all those things are important and true. But even if somehow there is eventually an impeachment and trump is removed from office that, would take months, possibly even years. And while hes still here, he and republicans in congress could do significant damage. Just yesterday, for example, the Trump White House unveiled his Budget Proposal for next year with the title new foundation for american greatness. And as a general rule, you should trust the thing less the longer its name is. For example, if you were sick, you would rather take penicillin or a handful of dr. Wickershams miracle fizz pills . [ light laughter ] well figure it out. Because the cruelty the budget is going to make you sick. The u. S. Is facing some of the steepest budget cuts in history if approved by congress. The white house is looking to cut 1. 7 trillion out of the social safety net. There are cuts made to the food stamp program, c. H. I. P. , the Childrens Health insurance program. Critics are calling this the reverse robin hood budget because it takes from the poor and gives to the rich. This is only a Taxpayer First budget if youre in the top 1 income earners f youre one of the wealthiest american families, you do great. In fact, under this proposal, you get a tax break. Everybody else gets whacked under this budget. Seth thats right. Youre going to get whacked by dumb corleone. [ light laughter ] tonight you sleep with a fish. Actually, boss, its sleep with the fishes. You know, we throw them in the river. Were not going to have him make sex with the fish . [ light laughter ] i dont know, seems like thats worse. Now its true that a president s proposed budget is essentially just a wish list that will be changed by congress. But still, what someone wishes for tells you a lot about that person. If a 7yearold blows out his birthday candles and then looks around and says, where are the strippers and cocaine . Youre going to know billy might have some issues. [ light laughter ] and in thise case, trump is wishing for some truly savage cuts to Social Security and medicaid, in particular. The budget would cut Social Security Disability Insurance by 72 billion along with 610 billion in medicaid cuts. On top of an 880 billion medicaid cut already in the Republican Health care bill. In total trumps budget would medicaid spending nearly in half. Whats espcially infuriating about this is that trump went out of his way repeatedly during the campaign to distance himself from traditional gop policies and promised his voters that he would not under any circumstances cut Social Security or medicaid. Im not going to cut Social Security like every other republican. And im not going to cut medicare or medicaid. I am going to protect and save your Social Security. On may 7th, 2015 he tweeted, i was the first and only potential gop candidate to say there will be no cuts to Social Security, medicare and medicaid. Huckabee copied me. Seth i love that trumps biggest concern was that somebody copied him. Huckabee copied me and also james has been passing very mean notes. [ laughter ] this guy writes everything down. [ light laughter ] this budget lays bare just how much of a fraud Trumps Campaign was. It goes back on virtually everything he promised to the people who voted for him. It also cut safety net programs like food stamps, which would have devastating consequences, especially for People Living in states that voted overwhelmingly for trump. Who is this going to hit politically . Trump supporters. If you look only, for example, at snap, the former food stamps program, a majority of those receiving benefits under the program today, in all of the five midwestern states that tipped the election. Iowa, ohio, michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin are noncollege whites. And those are the voters at the very core of the trump coalition. I think the person who would have hated this budget the most is perhaps, donald trump the candidate. Seth thats right. Donald trump the candidate would hate donald trump the president. And you know its a shame those two never met, i can only imagine the things candidate trump would have to say about President Trump. We have a president that cant get anybody to do anything. So he signs, you know, executive orders. We cant have someone in the oval office who doesnt understand the meaning of the words, confidential or classified. [ light laughter ] this is collusion and corruption of the highest order and the world is laughing at us. Theyre laughing at the stupidity of our president. [ laughter and applause ] seth okay. You know what . [ cheers and applause ] all right. Maybe maybe its better those if two dont ever meet, because i gotta be honest, i think they would [ bleep ] hate each other. [ light laughter ] now, how did trump go from promising to protect medicaid to cutting it in half . Well, rather than stand by his campaign promises, he deferred mostly to his budget director, mick mulvaney, a former Tea Party Member of congress and hardline conservative who unlike candidate trump has openly called for drastically reducing the size of the federal government. In fact, when mulvaney unveiled the budget on tuesday, he argued that using tax payer dollars to help poor and working people wasnt compassionate, it was akin to a crime. We look at this budget through the eyes of the people who are actually paying the bills. If i take money from you and i have no intention of ever giving it back, that is not debt. That is theft. Seth yes, theft is one word for it. Another is trump university. That also works. [ light laughter ] and if youre a trump voter and you took his promises on Social Security and medicare seriously, you essentially voted for the opposite of what mulvaney wants. And yet, mulvaney, rather than trump, seems to be making the decisions about what to cut as a wall street journal reporter explained yesterday. He took basically the equivalent of a yellow legal pad with a bunch of proposed cuts into the oval office with showed them to trump. And trump like went through them one by one and said yes, no, yes, no. Seth which is the same way trump decides which of his children get christmas gifts. [ light laughter ] yes. No. Yes. No [ laughter ] but the trump budget proposes trillions in cuts to programs that poor and working people rely on to pay for military spending increases and giant tax cuts. And on top of all that, it doesnt even balance the budget. The Trump Administration claims that it does, but that claim is based, and this is true, on a math error, and not a small one either. Theyre assuming 3 growth for this budget and thats going to pay for getting their budget to balance. But they assumed already that they were going to get that Economic Growth and that thats what was going to pay for their tax cut. So theyre double counting what that growth will be. They seem to have just made a basic math error and that math error adds up to Something Like 2 trillion. Seth they made a 2 trillion math error. I have a feeling math errors are what caused trump to go bankrupt four times. That was a great dinner. Now to leave a tip. Lets see, it was, 200, 20 . Thats 9 million. [ light laughter ] im just kidding. He never left a tip. [ light laughter ] as important and unnerving as the russia investigation is, we cant lose sight of the damage trump can still do as president. This budget is not only cruel, its delusional. It would eviscerate safety net programs that poor and working people rely on just to fund tax cuts for the wealthiest americans. If this budgets passes, the top 1 is gonna look like this. While everyone else is going to look like this. [ light laughter ] this has been a closer look. [ cheers and applause ] well be right back with kevin spacey, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] ugh, no bars. Oh no, looks like somebody needs a new network. When i got this unlimited plan they told me they were all the same. Theyre not. [ muffled music coming from club. Blue monday by new order. Cheers. ] [ music and cheers get louder ] the travel rewards credit card from bank of america. Its travel, better connected. [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome back, everybody. Please give it up to the 8g band, right over there. [ cheers and applause ] also sitting in on the drums this week, hes a member of the Los Angeles Based indy rock band local natives, and their latest album sunlit youth, is available now. Matt frazier is here, everybody. Thank you for being here, matt. Our first guest tonight is a golden globe, tony, and Academy Award winning actor you know from the usual suspects and american beauty. The fifth season of his hit series, house of cards, starts streaming on netflix may 30th. Lets take a look. I dont need to see this person anymore. Get rid of the asset. Sir, hes an animal but hes still an american citizen. We are at war, and he is an enemy combatant. And he lost whatever rights he might have had as an american when he cut that poor mans head off. Seth please welcome to the show, kevin spacey. [ cheers and applause ] seth how are you . Very well. How are you . Im glad im finally here. Youve been on the air three years. Seth three years. Ive avoided it up until this moment. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] but i really wanted to i wanted you to have a little rehearsal before i came on. Seth thank you. Right. From that clip, its nice to see, Frank Underwood seems real chilled out now in season five. [ light laughter ] hes a real laid back president. Yeah. Yeah you know, just using fear to get votes. Seth yeah. This season five . Congratulations. Thank you, thank you. Seth were picking it up and now your wife, played by the lovely robyn wright is now your running mate. That is correct. Seth so this is the world we live in now. Well, nothing like that could really happen. Seth yeah, i guess. [ light laughter ] well, i guess you now have to really go far afield to find things that cant really happen. No. No, i actually think that whats interesting, is that there are people who watch the show, even that as an example last year, well thats a little crazy. That would never really happen. And then suddenly 18 months later, its like, oh, wait a second. Seth yeah. That actually could happen. Seth yeah. Or, it is happening. Or i think that were scarier than weve ever been before. Seth you know what i like though . Because, i know some people say the shows about politics, there are a lot of wonderful shows about politics. Youself, veep. People say, are these even worth it anymore, because the real things so crazy. But what i like about your show, is when i turn it off, youre not president anymore. [ laughter and applause ] i get to watch it. I enjoy it. Although, interesting. We did a little publicity stunt on monday. We took pete souza, who is Obamas White House photographer and we went out to washington, d. C. Dressed up as frank. And doug stamper, Micheal Kelly came with us. And im telling you, 97 of the, maybe hundreds of people we saw during the course of the day called me mr. President. Seth really . They were like, mr. President , mr. President . [ light laughter ] mr. President . Seth something mental happening for them. I thought, how odd, thats sort of interesting. It makes me think that i could run even without a platform, although netflix is a pretty big platform. [ light laughter ] seth that is a perfect platform. Who knew it would be that kind of platform . So this is based i dont know if Everybody Knows this, on a wonderful british show. Thats right. Seth that had three seasons. And you guys, i mean, its obviously very different. But you kept a lot of the same things. Turning the camera was a key part of that show. Thats right. Because, although some people believe that direct address, where you talk directly to the camera was invented by farris beuller. It actually wasnt. [ light laughter ] it was actually invented by shakespeare. Seth oh right, shakespeare did it. Shakespeare created it in richard iii. and then michael dobbs, who wrote the book that became the british series, decided to use that device in the series. And so we kept that and we also kept the initials of the characters. In britain he was called francis urquhart. Seth yeah. Which we didnt think sounded terribly american. But we kept Francis Underwood so the initials would be f. U. [ laughter and applause ] seth which is key. A key element. I have to ask about this. Because, so you did a one man show. Was it a one man show in england . It was a one man show in england. Seth about clarence darrow. Thats correct. Seth a famous lawyer. And youre doing it here. Thats right. Seth and youre doing it in a tennis court. Yes. At arthur ashe stadium. Seth arthur ashe stadium. Which is a large tennis court. Yeah. But, were not filling the whole thing. It will actually be quite intimate. Seth how intimate . Well, i would say its a 25,000 seat stadium. Seth yeah. And we might have 5,000 people. Seth well, how big was it where you did it in england . It was 1,040 people. Seth okay, gotcha. So its way bigger. Its way bigger, but were going to use the big tv screens. Seth thats great. And im telling you, it is a night of delectable, desire and mystery. Seth really . Thats what people want from their tennis court. And that was just in my gift bag. I just thought id use it. [ light laughter ] seth so are you how will it as a performer, how does it change to perform first of all, i know this is a dumb question. Theyre gonna take the nets down, right . Theyre not gonna be there. They will take the nets down. And i believe the judge wont be there yelling, foul. [ light laughter ] seth line although, play ball, will be good. Game on. Look, its going to be incredible. First of all, i love theater. I love doing theater in the round, which is what this will be. Were bringing in 600 additional seats on to the court. So were building a stage. Its only about 22 feet. And i go into the audience quite a lot. There is a lot of audience interaction, theres a lot of comedy in the show. There is a lot of i get people to read things. And i think that darrow was a really kind of remarkable figure in american history. A lot of people dont know who he is. Although they kind of know who he is because of the film inherit the wind, and the play. Seth sure. Which is about the famous scopes monkey trial. Which is about the teaching of evolution and science class in tennessee. Very famous case. But hes a character and a figure, i mean, particularly after just watching you do that entire look closer tonight. Seth yeah. Its kind of remarkable to have someone like darrow whose attitude about things, the things he fought for, the kind of issues that were still grappling with today, i think hes a really great voice to hear in opposition to all that you just talked about. Seth yeah. He seems to be a fascinating guy. I did not realize how many times he argued people out of being executed. Its a pretty remarkable, probably his greatest achievement. He defended 102 men against the Death Penalty and not a single one hung. Seth thats unbelievable. Also, very exciting, im going to transition from Death Penalty, youre hosting the tonys. [ light laughter ] [ talking over each other ] seth youre a tony Award Winning actor. Yes. Seth were you there whether you won . I was there. Seth you know what its like to be there. Are you excited . Im very excited. I apparently was about the 20th person they asked. Seth oh no. I heard 15. I heard 15t. Maybe 15th. You were one of those 15. [ light laughter ] you can admit it to me. Seth look, i i think tina, jimmy, you, james. Seth no, i think it would have been ten more nos, they maybe would have got to me. Ten more nos. Seth but now will there be i know you cant tell us much. Thats right. Seth can you tell us anything . No. Seth okay. [ light laughter ] i will tell you this, i will be dressed exquisitely. Seth oh, thats exciting. Exquisitely. Seth costume change . Will you have a costume change . There will be many costume changes. Seth thats exciting. And a, i have a great time. I love celebrating the theater. Broadways just been fantastic this season. So its great to be able to go and would be the community of theater that i love so much. And celebrate. Seth i was saying backstage and i mean it. Its my Favorite Award show, because there are so many great performances. Well, i am personally going to handle all the envelopes myself. Seth oh good. [ laughter and applause ] that is very smart. Thats very smart. Im looking forward to that. Im looking forward to house of cards. Thank you for finally being here. Thank you so much. Thank you, thank you. Kevin spacey, everybody. [ cheers and applause ] 71st annual tony awards are on june 11th on cbs. The sixth season of house of cards begins streamin on netflix on may 30th. Seth its always so great to see you. Good to see you. Seth you know, weve known a lot of people over the years. But now we have this real connection, because you had a baby just three months after ours. Yes. After you, followed your lead. Seth yeah. And how so now, have you traveled with him yet . Yes. James is the name of my baby. He is about 10 months old and we have traveled with him. I recently, because i went to st. Louis and i went without my husband. Our marriage is fine. I just i went by myself. Seth gotcha. And i was very nervous about it. Because i was going to be the only person there with james. And everyone kept saying, oh its fine. Like people help. Other passengers are really friendly. And like, helpful when they see with you a baby. That is not true. Seth no. [ light laughter ] i feel like humanity is at its worse when they see a lady with a baby on the plane. Seth yeah. [ light laughter ] because everyone is like diverting their eyes. Like, oh, we cant. I was like literally like hauling the car seat up the aisle. Some some older lady goes, that looks hard. [ light laughter ] im like, it is hard. Help me [ laughter ] and so and also, have you traveled with ash . Seth yes. Travelled with ash. Hes decent. Yeah. Okay, yeah. James is, what do they say . A spirited child. Jimmy oh, okay. I think they call him spirited, yeah. And we were going to l. A. A couple months ago. And michael was with me then. But james would not be calmed by anything. Like he i was showing you know youre like a one man show. Seth yeah. I was like, showing him the seat belt buckle and, like, the barf bag. Nothing would appease him until i noticed the Airline Magazine had the cover the cover of the magazine was the beautiful face of allison seth Allison Williams. And did that so you can see shes on the Airline Magazine. She, her gorgeous her gorgeous face delighted my child. [ light laughter ] it was the only thing that worked. And we were like flipping through the magazine. There were, like, ads for shoes. James would not smile. And then her face would come on again, and he just lit up. It was the best baby balm ever. Seth and have you kept the magazine for future use . Yes. I sent you some other pictures. Seth okay. This has worked many times. Its the best baby trick. Allison Williams Seth so here he is again. You have a different Allison Williams magazine here. [ laughter ] he was so good. And im packing up. And then we had a six hour delay on the way home. Allison williams. Seth Allison Williams. [ laughter ] he likes it. It is the best so for any mothers or fathers or anyone anyone really, any babies out there. Seth yeah. Pick up a picture of Allison Williams. Seth because it does not seem like he likes conventional childrens books. Because there, good night moon. Oh, james. Seth he wants his Allison Williams. He loves Allison Williams. He hates books. He, like, punches books. [ laughter ] he is not a reader. He takes after his mom. [ light laughter ] seth how are you i know alexei post baby, like, just would talk about how she feels, like part of her brain is like not working as much since she had im really part of brain is gone. The other day i was cooking and i was like, stirring something with a wooden spoon. And i thought is a wooden spoon safe to use on the stove . And i was like, where does wood come from . I dont know. [ light laughter ] i have no answer. I was like, is it a vegetable . [ laughter ] an element . I could not think of where wood it comes from trees, guys. I couldnt think of it. Its crazy. Seth now do you find i know you and alexei, when you see each other, you talk a lot about your babies and obviously do you find that when you meet other moms that there is that happens all the time . Yes. And i have to interject. Your wife is like crushing it as a mom. Sorry. Shes a really good mom. Seth shell be very and this means shell watch this episode. Oh yay, okay. [ laughter ] for once. Seth yeah. Okay. I feel like people at the playground are maybe people assert themselves into your business a little bit too much. Particularlym i dont know if this is happening with you but everyone is asking me if im planning to have a second baby. Im like i just had one baby. Seth yeah. Like, give it some time. The other day at the playground a lady said, oh you are planning on having another . I said, i dont know. She said, oh well these two are mine and im just started trying for a third last night. [ light laughter ] i was like i didnt know this woman. And i was so stunned. I was like how was it . I didnt know what to say. [ laughter ] too much. Too much. Too much. [ applause ] seth do you think it took . [ laughter ] yeah. When i go to the playground you know, when i see another dad, i feel like there is this dance that you do, which is and im like how old . And theyre like 13 months. How old . And im like 15 months. And theyre like, okay. [ laughter ] theres nothing. Great. Youre exactly right. Seth we have nothing else to say. Ive nothing and im like weve done this dance before. Why are is any us initiating it again . Ill sort of turn my back a little bit. I would just be like, im just pushing him silently. [ laughter ] its better. Seth its better. Its about i want to bond. Seth yeah, to really connect with him. So this is really exciting, kimmy goes to college this year. Yeah, yeah. Seth and she gets she gets into college via athletics. Athletic scholarship. She gets into colombia university, which is an Ivy League Institution but she gets in on an athletic scholarship which ivy leagues dont grant athletic scholarships, i dont think. But she somehow bypasses it and she gets on. Seth wow. And she gets on. And i love it. I love that kimmy kimmy is a jock. Shes like very strong. Seth right. I think from her time in the bunker. But shes also sort of inexplicably, just physically strong. Which i love. Its just fun to play that. Seth yeah. I have more to ask about that and would you stick around . I guess. Seth all right. Okay. Seth well be right back with more with ellie kemper after this. [ cheers and applause ] [laughs] you have a side that is retired playing tag and gettin tired. Seth to show the audience some of the embarrassing things you acted in when you first started out before you were famous. Okay. Seth you okay with this . Yeah, yeah, yeah. Please welcome to the show tom perez. [ cheers and applause ] seth welcome. Thank you for making the time. Its an honor to be with you. Seth this is an interesting time to have you. The Congressional Budget Office forward the Republican Health care bill today after they made some very small changes and it went from 24 million uninsured to 23 million uninsured. So, progress. How do you get this message out to voters that are not democratic voters that this is a Health Care Plan that is not doing them any favors . Well lets be honest. This bill is an unmitigated disaster. In order to provide 600 billion of tax relief to the wealthy, not only are 23 Million People going to lose their coverage, but millions of other folks, if you have a preexisting condition. I met someone today who said, im diabetic and im scared to death, tom. Youre out of luck. Potentially and probably. If you have Substance Abuse or if youre someone thinking about having a kid, they can Health Insurance companies under this bill can say, nope, thats not covered. The opioid epidemic. You know, its touched so many corners of america, seth. And folks are going to lose coverage for those critical services. This is a dumpster fire. Seth now and weve got to tell the American People that. And all in service of providing a tax cut to the ultra wealthy. I talked to a friend yesterday, the mother two of kids with special needs. Theyre both autistic. And medicaid is their lifesaver. It enables them to keep their children in their neighborhood school. Without it, they may have to institutionalize their children. Thats not right. Health care should be a right, not a privilege. Seth it feels like the Democratic Party can do a very good job now saying this is whats wrong with that. And again, i understand youre against a lot of negative messaging. It didnt seem like obamacare was expressed as a positive until this other came and told people what they were losing. Medicare for all seems to be something a lot of House Democrats are moving towards supporting. Obviously that is lot easier to explain than this current republican bill. Easier to explain than obamacare. Do you see the party moving towards medicare for all at this platform . Well listen, i would love to make sure that everybody had access to health care. And medicare for all was almost enacted in 2009. And we were frankly one vote short of doing that. I would love if i were king for the day to do something akin to medicare for all. Because medicare has been a very good program. And its helped a lot of people. The reality right now is that the Affordable Care act has been a lifesaver as well. And again, the irony of this, seth, is that the Affordable Care act, the structure of it was actually a brain child of the heritage foundation. Which is a conservative think tank. Seth sure. Using Market Forces to provide access to healthcare. Why . Because democrats like president obama, myself, and others who wanted to be, you know, closer to a medicare for all model, we couldnt get the votes to get that passed. And so we went with this approach. And its been a lifesaver for so many people. And so right now, you know, while we fight for something even better, the reality right now is we have to make the case and we are making the case. And thats why republicans dont show up to their own town hall meetings. Because they know that this bill is an unmitigated catastrophe. Seth so you are sort of tasked with rebuilding the Democratic Party which, lets be honest, didnt have a great year. And do you feel like you have the hardest job in politics right now . Well, you know, we have our moments. You know, you get 50 democrats in a room, you might have 100 opinions. But thats kind of what i love about the Democratic Party. And ill tell you this seth i just like 50 democrats with 50 wins would be nice. And you know, seth, i think we have to look a little bit further than just november of 2016. Because, you know, we lost 900 seats in state legislature over the last eight years. We had 60 senators in 2009 and now we have 48. We had the House Majority and now we dont have it. And the list goes on. And what we have to do and what were doing is we have to get back to basics. You know, weve got to make sure that were building that strong Party Infrastructure everywhere. In all 50 states and the territories. And thats exactly what were doing. Weve got to lead with our values and articulate what we stand for. We believe that health care is a right for all and not a privilege for a few. We believe that, you know, prosperity should be shared by everyone and not just by a few at the top. We have been fighting for the average person, you know, for the history of this party. We want to keep doing that because thats who we are as democrats. The energy out there is unbelievable. I was on the west coast last week. Seth it does strike me that you have this incredible source of energy from this sort of movement, this activist movement. Amen. Seth and i do wish you the best of luck harnessing it. I do want to ask about this. Because this and i dont want to, again, belabor the 2016 election, but a lot of talk about super delegates. The Democratic Party has super delegates, the Republican Party does not. Can you make the argument that the democratic primary process is as democratic as the republican primary process as long as you have Something Like super delegates . Well thats the conversation were having right now. We have what we call Unity Commission which was established last year and its a partnership of folks who some of them support secretary clinton and some of them supported senator sanders. And we had our first meeting earlier this month. And our goal was to produce a democratic primary process and election process that is fair and open to everyone. The super delegate issue is one of many issues that were discussing. And frankly there are people who i have Great Respect for who are on both sides of that issue. And thats why we brought this together. Its a very open process. Anyone who wants to come and attend can do so. And people have been giving us ideas and suggestions on super delegates, on whether primaries should be opened or closed. On how we make sure we get our message out to everyone. Because i believe our values command, you know, the support of the majority of the American People. Whether its health care or climate or good jobs or diversity and inclusion. But weve got to get out there and get that message out. Seth well i feel like this is the part of the movie where the democrats just lost the big boxing match and now were in the training montage for the come back fight. Amen. Seth and im looking forward to that. But enjoy your training montage and thank you so much for being here. [ cheers and applause ] pleasure to be with you. Seth tom perez, everybody.
