Catholic Elementary Schools in the city of philadelphia will be closed tomorrow because of the severe cold. Our team of reporters is checking problems caused by the weather. First, meteorologist bill henley is tracking how cold its going to feel. Bill . Tracy we are on our way to record cold tonight. A first alert has been issued. Record cold with the wind blow willing feel like 15 to 25 degrees below zero. First, the cold then the snow. 24 hours from now, well be seeing accumulating snow on this live picture. But right now it is a bitter cold wind blowing in philadelphia. 11 degrees. The winds are at 13 with stronger gusts. It feels like 4 degrees below zero in philadelphia. And thats one of the higher readings in the area. Look at pottstown, redding. This is where it feels like 16 14, of 16 degrees below zero. And the skiers you just showed feels like 36 degrees below zero in the pocono mountains. Tonight were on track for record cold temperatures. The wind to 20 Miles Per Hour will make it feel like 20 below. The actual temperatures to 3 degrees below zero to 2 degrees above that is cold enough for records to fall. Ill show you which cities are most likely to see record temperatures tomorrow mornings as well as the snow that is on the way in just 24 hours, when i come back. Thank you bill. The high winds turned a Church Steeple into a flying projectile today at the borough home Baptist Church. Doug shimell is live at the church tonight. Doug theyre cleaning up and making decisions about the future . Yeah. And the pastor said they had prayed that the winds would spare the Church Steeple today. Unfortunately, they got their answer. In the middle of the 10 00 a. M. Service, there were the 40milesperhour gusts, and then the Fire Department. She reported to us we must evacuate the building. We said what for, right . We thought everything seems intact. She said just just lost your steeple. It sounded like a very strong wind, but it didnt sound like something falling. Reporter when they came outside, they saw the entire 36foot steeple and bell tower on the burham Baptist Church had collapsed. When the wind blow it pulls the piece apart. Once it pulls it apart, its an open sail and the rest of it comes down. Reporter but somehow the steeple missed the bus stop outside by just a few feet. Normally, we have many people on the steps of the church, on the wall of the church waiting for the buss to come and go. But the lord didnt let one person there. Reporter Church Member says the bell tower and steeple are the original ones dating to 1929. As been found. Im sorry. Its a broken ornament. Reporter the question now for the church do they have enough money to cover what the insurance wont pay for. I think were at that point that we would probably want to downsize it. Firefighters rescued a woman who was pinned by a coffee table and holding her 2yearold daughter. Her husband was thankful that he got talked out of watching a movie. Had i not been in the bed, i would have been on the couch probably where the tree fell and been crushed. The tree also damaged the quigleys minivan, but they are grateful that everyone is okay. Well residents are back in their apartments in east falls after strong winds caused a tree to fall on their building overnight. It happened at the falls apartment complex. One of the branches poked through into the apartment on the top floor. No one was hurt. Well these cold is dangerous for more than people. Philadelphia is making pet owners pay if they let their animals suffer outside. Nbc 10s Denise Nakano is live. Police are going door to door. Tell us than . Reporter animal control officers are working overnight inside concerned there may be people who think its okay to leave pets in the outdoors. If you dont think that happens, there are 20 violations they just gave over this past weekend for people violating a new ordinance. These shelter dogs may have been lost, given up or abandoned, but they spent their nights indoors and away from the bitterly cold air. Cant say thats the case for all the citys pets. Were very busy with the extreme weather calls. Reporter officers like don choi with the animal care and control team or act, respond to a spike in calls about animals left out in the cold. Under a new ordinance in philadelphia, its against the law to leave an animal outdoors unprotected when the city declares a code blue or when it gets to 20 degrees or below. Nbc 10s Randy Gyllenhaal has been covering this story since it happened. Randy, what are investigators telling you tonight . Reporter well, detectives are saying this pickup truck driver was seen speeding wildly down route 100 here slamming into the back of this minivan. You can see whats left behind here. Pieces of the car, a lot of debris mangled metal after this very violent and deadly accident. The minivan was almost unrecognizable. Police say the family inside was hit from behind by a drunk driver. Two teenagers, a brother and sister, were thrown from the van and died on the scene. Theyve been identified as Charlotte Hannagan a junior at downingtown west and her brother miles, a biology major at west chester. The teens mom and dad survived but are still in the icu, enduring a parents worst nightmare, outliving their own children. This defendant chose to get behind the wheel of a pickup truck and driver recklessly while under the influence of alcohol. This tragedy the inevitable result. Police arrested 25yearold thomas muir, a media native who was behind the wheel of the pickup truck. In the minutes before the crash, witnesses saw him speed, swerving erratically. The force of the impact so severe it sent this debris flying down the pottstown pike. Those two teenagers were wearing seat belts, yet they were still ejected from the vehicle. Muir is facing dui homicide charges. Nobody was home when we knocked on his listed address in media. Meanwhile, the local School District here released this statement to nbc 10. Words cannot express the sadness our School Community is feeling at this time. Our sincere condolences thoughts and prayers go out to the hannagan friends and family who are dealing with this horrific tragedy. The high school will have grief counselors available for students. Two cars collided in philadelphias logan section this afternoon, leaving one person dead. This happened around 4 30 at the intersection of fisher and ogontz avenues when one of the cars tried to make a lefthand turn. Police say the victim was a passenger this one of the cars. Both drivers were taken to the hospital listed in serious condition. A new act of brutality and a new warning from isis. Tonight militants have released a video that appears to show the beheading of 21 egyptian christians. This is a still image from that video which was reportedly taken in libya. In it, the militants claim to be from the tripoli province of isis. If the groups are directly affiliated, that would put isis less than 500 miles from italy. And in the video, one militant says we will conquer rome. Police had to fend off socks, shoes and even a small refrigerator as they chased a tractortrailer through western pennsylvania. The chase started on route 70 in Westmoreland County yesterday morning. State troopers followed the truck for 34 miles before they finally stop it with spike strips on the pennsylvania turnpike. The chase started after the driver christopher boyer, called police to say he was going to wreck his truck. When troopers tried to pull him over he started throwing clothes and a mini fridge from his cab. Police believe it was a gastrointestinal bug that made more than 100 students sick at East Stroudsburg university. The norovirus outbreak prompted officials to shut down selfservice food stations in dining halls while crews worked to clean and disinfect calx buildings. Prices at the pump are jumping again. Well see you then. Meantime teens are getting sleepier. A new study finds many teens dont even get seven hours of shuteye a night. Experts generally suggest nine to ten hours of sleep for teens. The biggest drop was among 15yearolds. Researchers say the increasing use of social media smart phones and other electronics could be contributing to that lack of sleep, along with rising rates of obesity, which has been linked to sleep deprivation. New at 11 00, a magic trick gone wrong results in a fire at the philadelphia tattoo convention. And it was all caught on camera. Take a look at this. This man accidentally lit himself on fire. And then it spread at the convention center. Fortunately crews were there to put it out quickly so the Fire Department did not have to respond. And a new Jersey Transit bus driver and eight passengers escaped to safety when a bus caught fire in Central Jersey today. The driver noticed smoke coming from a rear wheel well and pulled over on route 9 and marble township, monmouth county. The driver saw flames. Everyone evacuated the bus. No one was hurt. But bus was destroyed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Stay home and remain patient. Thats the message tonight from bostons mayor after the city is hit with another blizzard. Blinding snow whipping winds and bitter cold. Its the fourth major snowstorm to hit new england in three weeks. This one is leaving as much as 20 inches of snow in some places, and plow crews are up against a daunting task. I know its getting frustrating for everyone. Its getting frustrating even for myself there is no place to put the snow. Everyone is getting aggravated being in the house. But stay calm and stay focused, stay off the roads, stay indoor and stay safe. To put the amount of snow . Perspective, boston is getting more snow in these three weeks than chicago has ever seen in an entire winter. This bitter cold isnt just tough on your body, its also tough on your car. Single digit temperatures mean dead batteries and other problems. Officials with aaa say during extended cold temperatures like were getting, about 30 of calls are battery related. When temperatures hit zero degrees, a cars battery loses about 60 of its strength. Their best advice if their battery is more than 3 years old, get it checked. Take matters into getting your battery surfaced beforehand before problems arrive. And, you know, thats the best advice i can give you. Do Winter Maintenance on your car and everything will be fine. Experts say along with your battery, now is also a good time to check your tire pressure. Bill henley you all ready with your car . Oh mix, car is ready. Its running right now. And wilmington is 9 degrees. Very cold air in the pocono mountains. The windchill feels like it is colder than 30 below. And there is the wind blowing in philadelphia. That steady wind will be with us right through the night. And well into tomorrow morning. It is going to be a bitter cold day tomorrow. But some of the coldest temperatures that weve seen in a long time come by tonight. Chester springs, trenton down to 5 degrees. It is 1 degree right now in quakertown. Look at shenandoah. 8 degrees below zero is the actual temperature. None of these are factoring in the wind. 9 in newark. Swedesboro 8 degrees. The wind thats another story. Look at the 47 Miles Per Hour wind gusts. Right now in the pocono mountains. 30 Miles Per Hour wind gusts in allentown, and those winds gusts extend to the jersey shore. Everybody is going to feel the cold tonight. The hourbyhour windchills at 3 00 in the morning, 17 below zero in philadelphia. It feels like 32 below in the pocono mountains. Cold. Thats what we have to deal with tonight and tomorrow. And it will be dry through the day. Well see lots of sunshine tomorrow. But come tomorrow night, this is what well have to deal with. This is a storm system producing rain to the south. But its cold enough here that its going to be all snow for us. You can see its moving towards st. Louis right now and into southern indiana. Its got a ways to go before it gets here. But its going to be a fast mover. And that one will bring a significant amount of moisture with it. So we could see the highest accumulations from a single storm of the season so far. Now, during the evening commute tomorrow, its still to our southwest. D. C. Will be getting the first snowflakes. But during the evening hours, 11 00 tomorrow night, thats accumulating snow in philadelphia. And across delaware and south jersey, and it continues overnight and into Tuesday Morning when vai, tracy and me go on the air at 4 00 a. M. This is what the radar is going to look like. And it will continue through the morning commute. But by 9 00 a. M. It starts to taper off. And by afternoon, it is done. But even though its a fast mover, there is going to be some shoveling to do. The future weather suggests that by 11 00 tomorrow night, an inch will be on the ground for harrisburg lancaster, dover, and cape may. By 5 00 in the morning, the Early Morning hours of the commute, 3 inches for redding in philadelphia. And look at parts of south jersey. Half a foot potential. And by the time this one is done, by early afternoon, we could see 6 inches on the ground in philadelphia. More to the south and east. We have a lot going on. Tonight its the cold. 3 degrees below to 2 degrees above. And of course those windchills to 20 degrees below zero. Then during the day tomorrow afternoon temperatures in the teens. To near 20 degrees with the wind blowing. It is going to feel cold through the morning. Those winds should ease in the afternoon. And the sevenday forecast well here comes the snow tomorrow night. Well start at 14 degrees and warm to 28 degrees on tuesday. And then the snow starts coming in. Snowshowers for wednesday. And it turns colder for thursday and friday with a possibility of snow coming in on sunday. With rain. But it will be warmer sunday afternoon. A high of 42 degrees.
