The white house is using the word war when it comes to fighting Islamic State militants in iraq and syria. New polling shows most americans are in favor of stopping the isis threat with military force. Thats the focus of meet the press later today on nbc. Joining me now for a preview is moderator chuck todd. Good morning, chuck. Good morning, rosemary. Chuck, in his address to the nation on wednesday, president obama laid out a plan after he had said a few weeks ago he didnt have a plan in syria yet, to expand air strikes against isis while forging a coalition against a threat. How has the Republican Congress received the president s strategy . Do they think its enough . We have fresh new polling, and what to me is a perfectly rational response by the american public, theyre simultaneously supportive of the idea of military action and at the same time skeptical that the plan is going to work. When you think about what the last 13 years have looked like, how could they not be skeptical . Thats basically the questions that i have for the white house chief of staff about this coalition. Part of the president s plan for it to succeed, to roll back isis, is to have combat troops at the ready, to both defeat isis and fill any vacuum thats created once isis is defeated either in syria and iraq. The question is whether any of these middle eastern countries, this coalition that john kerry is trying to build, is going to show up, whether theyre going to provide the combat troops that are necessary on the ground. The president has ruled out american combat troops. That would be politically, incredibly unpopular in the country, but will there be somebody else that steps up . So far, the secretary of state has come up short getting any country to commit specifically to putting combat troops in syria. In 2015, Hillary Clinton heads to iowa for the First Time Since she lost the caucuses there in 2008. During this visit, should we be looking for clues or hints as to how she would run a 2016 president ial campaign . Weve been talking to Iowa Democrats and were finding she has some of the same problems intentionally that she faced nearly eight years ago when she lost to barack obama. That is does she ideologically fit where the Democratic Party is today on National Security issues and on Economic Issues. And we found a bunch of Iowa Democrats that simply believe shes just not progressive enough on either of those issues, not dovish enough on National Security issues. So i think the question that i have, Hillary Clintons going to be there today, how pop list does she sound on the stump . Does she start to talk about Economic Issues in a way that is a lot different than she talked about them six, seven, eight years ago. Because that will tell you that she is just as nervous about allowing somebody on her left the way barack obama defeated her last time, to sort of get traction. So i think thats what to look for today. Chuck todd, thanks for taking time to be with us this morning. Of course, thanks. Again, todays show will focus on the question can isis be defeated. Join chuck todd this morning at 10 30 on meet the press right here on nbc 10. Well be right back. Before we leave you, we want to get one last check of the weather.
