I just got word of this accident. This is a vehicle fire. Its tough to see, but we have a lot of smoke coming up from here. This is the ramp from 95 to the blue route northbound. You can see traffic is stopped along this ramp right now as a result of that car fire, which right now is still going. It doesnt even appear as if officials were out there just yet. So, again, this just in. This just happened in the last few minutes. Well keep you updated, but for now, that ramp is going to be closed, a temporary closure, but ill keep you updated on that situation. At 5 32, we are following breaking news from rome this morning, where pope francis officially confirmed he is coming to philadelphia next year for the world meeting of families. That big announcement made just a couple hours ago at a small meeting in rome. Nbc 10s matt delucia is live inside the cathedral basilica of saints peter and paul in center city. Matt, actually, the archbishop, archbishop chaput was in rome when the announcement was made this morning, right . Reporter yeah, thats right, chris. Archbishop Charles Chaput and a delegation from our area was in rome to get that news as it was happening, just a couple of hours ago. Archbishop chaput even says that he is overjoyed and he believes that the popes presence next year for the world meeting of families will electrify the gathering. Now, the world meeting of families is scheduled to be held september 22nd to 27th, and that would include a papal mass on sunday, september 27th. You might recall, there was a strong push from local leaders to get pope francis to make the trip to philadelphia for this event. It will be Pope Franciss first papal trip to the u. S. , and its only the fourth time that a reigning pope has come to this country, so its an historic moment indeed. And right now, well come back live. New overnight, a philadelphia man has died in a fire, despite Police Officers attempts to rescue him. Nbc 10s jesse gary is live outside Einstein Medical Center where one of the officers is still being treated. Jesse . Reporter tracy, this fire commissioner is using this tragedy as a way to tell people they need to be proactive about fire safety. In this case, investigators say the flames started inside a second floor middle bedroom of a boarding house on chelten avenue in german town. Three residents were alerted to trouble by smoke detectors. They made it out alive, but one elderly man was trapped and died in the blaze. Tcheck your smoke alarm monthly. Have a home escape plan so everyone knows how to get out, and when you get out, stay out. Reporter the injured officers were trying to use their fire extinguishers inside their vehicles to get inside and save that trapped man, but unfortunately, they were not able to do so. The man accused of sending his romantic rival a toxic birthday card is scheduled for trial. Nicholas helman faces several charges, including attempted murder. Authorities say he laced the card with ricin, and put it in the mailbox of the mandating his exgirlfriend in warminster township. A show of support expected tonight for laidoff Police Officers in franconia township. Last month the board of supervisors approved laying off four fulltime officers, two parttime officers and a Police Administrative position, all because of budget cuts. Their union is asking residents to come out to tonights township meeting, where the budget will be presented. And we are expected to learn the results of a grand jury investigation into a scandal involving the Easton Area School district. Tom drago, former director of technology for the district, is accused of hacking into administrators computers and keeping pictures of nude women on his laptop. The grand jury was looking into allegations of intimidation, harassment and tampering with public records. 5 37. A change to the philadelphia skyline. By later this afternoon and this evening, as this is pulling away, an inch or more in allentown, doylestown and well over an inch for philadelphia. Wilmington could pick up an inch and a half of rainfall. So, your neighborhood by neighborhood forecast calling for a dreary monday. 39 in the pocono mountains, lower 50s for allentown and reading and into the middle 50s for trenton, northeast philadelphia and mt. Holly. Periods of heavy rainfall for atlantic city, vineland and dover. And some of that rain will be heavy at times for wilmington, chester and philadelphia. Dont get used to these temperatures. And you can see right here this car fire. The flames are still going. Fire crews just got to the scene. You can see them right over here, but they havent yet started to extinguish that vehicle fire. Cameras shaking a little bit right now, so that ramp from 95 northbound to the blue route is going to be blocked off right now. Crews can get this fire extinguished and get that clear and out of there. And hope to at least get one lane reopened once its extinguished, but right now, the flames are still going. Right in this area, it looks like we have firefighters getting ready to start getting that fire extinguished, so well stay on the shot for a few minutes. And there they go, starting to get that fire out of there. Again, this is fully engulfed, this vehicle on the ramp from 95 northbound to the blue route. As you can see all right, they are making some progress right now to try and get that extinguished. Well be back in a few minutes with an update there. Philadelphia archbishop Charles Chaput was there with the pontiff for the announcement this morning. New video of the immediate aftermath of the Malaysia Airlines jet shot down in ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. This video was obtained by the associated press. It shows the wreckage on fire in a field. You can see the thick cloud of smoke there. A resident in the village shot the video but did not want to be identified. The video shows just how close the plane came to hitting that village. Meantime, the first pieces of the wreckage have been removed from the crash site. Crews began that work yesterday. The wreckage will be flown to the netherlands for further investigation. The plane was flying from amsterdam to kuala lumpur when it was shot down over a rebelcontrolled area of ukraine. 5 47. A grand jury in ferguson, missouri, could decide any day, perhaps any hour, if they will file charges against the officer who shot and killed teenager michael brown. Yesterday, demonstrators hit the streets to mark 100 days since the unarmed teenager was shot and killed by officer darren wilson. Over the weekend, the st. Louis post dispatch got a hold of records and videos, including this video showing wilson at a Police Station about two hours after the shooting. Also, police in new york are looking for a person who pushed a man on the subway tracks seconds before a train hit and killed him. Witnesses told police the 61yearold victim and his wife were simply waiting for their train in a station in the bronx yesterday morning. The attack appears to be random. Also, computer hackers hit the u. S. State department. Someone apparently got into the departments unclassified email system, but none of the classified documents were affected. Well, it came about three months late, but the big pnb letters that graced the center city skyline for more than half a century, theyre gone now. Workers ran into a few problems back in august when they could only remove three of the twelve letters. Yesterday, the remaining nine were taken down in less than 45 minutes. 3,000pound letters, they were considered a safety hazard because they had been on that building for six decades. Just like last time, a helicopter was brought in. Workers removed the letters. The letters were hosted into the air, then lowered one by one to the ground in front of city hall. And once again, there was a big crowd of onlookers enjoying this spectacle. You dont get to see history come down very often. So, i thought, we saw the beginning of it, might as welcome back and see the end. Amazing to see a helicopter come that close up on me. Pnb represented Philadelphia National bank. The company is gone, but nbc 10 has learned that the bs will go inside the building. So, some of the history lives on. Very nice. A philadelphia student will be getting a huge honor today. Yeah, she is one of the winners of the Widener University nbc 10 High School Leadership awards. Ania moore will be presented with that award at j. R. Masterman high school later today. She participated in a program called build on, going to haiti to help families and build a school. She is also involved in several school organizations. Congratulations to ania. The Georgia Department of transportation will hold a twoday drill this week following last winters storm that stranded thousands of drivers. Remember that . The state is focusing on pretreating roads and has extra tankers and snow plows. The state is also adding nine salt barns for crews to restock. Hard to believe the brining season is upon us. Actually, its not hard to believe, given the peak that bill gave us for the week coming up. The cold temperatures starting tomorrow, right . Oh, yeah. Crews are having a hard time completely getting this extinguished. This is the ramp from 95 northbound to the blue route northbound, and you can see that vehicle fire is still going right now, but a couple of times over the last ten minutes, ive seen what looked like that vehicle fire extinguished, and then all of a sudden, you see it reignite, and just a few minutes ago, it looked to be out for a minute to twominute stretch. Firefighters were making their way back to the truck and then it reignited. So, makes you wonder whats in that vehicle, but this ramp is still blocked off. Theyre out there again trying to work to get this vehicle fire completely extinguished. So, this has been out there are to about 10 to 15 minutes and well continue to update you on that situation. 76, westbound side at montgomery drive, we had an accident out there. Looks like that has cleared. It was blocking the right lane, but no other delays or accidents to report right now on 76. 95 southbound, the onramp to 95 from old city, from front and market street, that ramp is still blocked because of an overturned truck that actually happened before 4 00 this morning. Thats the leading cause of newborn deaths. Dr. Jay greenspan of the Dupont Hospital for children in willming taken talked to us about the risk factors for premature birth. Prematurity has a lot of risk factors. We know some of them. And so, its ethnicity, poverty, education, poor maternal health. But theres some unknowns as well. Now, babies who survive an early birth also face a lifetime of health challenges, including vision and breathing problems and learning disabilities in some cases. 1 in 30. And this weekend in camden county, a Nonprofit Group celebrated what they call banksgiving. The group fantastic friends held a thanksgivingstyle dinner in voorhees, but the focus was on money. The two teams who organized thanksgiving said their goal was to educate young adults with special needs on how to save and spend money successfully.
