He emerged calm and smiling. Confer with the lawyers, figure out what the next steps are. Reporter offering little comment on what the jury said he did. The trouble began when he ran for mayor of philadelphia, witnesses said his campaign was unorganized and earthquakely ran out of cash. What money he had in the account, prosecutors said, used to pay down his sons College Loan Debt and mounting debt for people who worked for him like a south jersey printer and law firm. When the campaign for mayor needed money, he took an it legal loan from a wealthy friend and used codefendant to pay it back, laundering through a private company. The cash used to repay the loan came from a nonprofit meant to help students go to college, but went into the banking the of the student loan executive, the man who granted the loan. The defense said there was no evidence he knew about the loan or had anything to do with repayment. The jury sided with the federal period of time and found he defrauded a Mortgage Company claiming a car sale provide funds to secure a mortgage for a vacation house. The car was never sold, and he drove it. He accepted bribes from a friend who paid his tuition bill, agreed to buy the car, but never took it from his garage. How unusual is it for a sitting conman to be found guilty and will he give up the seat before the term is over . Well, its highly unusual for a sitting congressman to be found guilty. In philadelphia, go back to the days to myers and ray, and more recently, theres a congressman from stanten island who pled guilty to criminal charges, but its highly unusual. It happens once in a blue moon. Weather he gives up the seat is a matter for congress. The kwconviction, federal conviction by itself, does not require him to give up the seat. Its up to the Ethics Committee of the house to decide whether to censure him or vote him out of the house, requiring twothirds vote, but in the meantime, while hes still there, actually, hes not convicted of a crime until sentenced officially on october 4th, and once convicted, hes not supposed to vote on any measures that come before the house or participate in any committees in vote, although hes actually allowed the house rule, which i think is house rule 23, suggests he should not participate or vote, but does not require it. We have a separation of powers issue here. Its up to the congress to decide that the house of representatives, what they want to do with representative, and, of course, he can resign on his own and end it if he wants to. Certainly see just the first glimpse of how much participation he could have in office. Continuing to look at that. Howard, thank you for the legal experti expertise. Thank you. After receivering 11 years, he lost the bid back in april, and state representative, dwagt evans, beat him in that race. Weve been asking for reactions to the corruption trial verdicts this afternoon, and we found mixed opinions. Hes been a member of congress 2320 years and built up support from voters. Reaction to the guilty verdict seem to be split along the philadelphiamontgomery line. I feel if they have enough evidence to convict him, theres validity to it. Has to be some truth. Reporter are you surprised . No. I think its awful. I hope it doesnt happen for him. Now him too . I dont think hes guilty.
