4:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., snow changes to icing, freezing rain and sleet. the icing mix changing to rain from south to north across the area, during the morning. by afternoon, earning verythinge and it's just getting drier actually, and it's getting warmer. there might be some fog tomorrow morning, you can see that area is much bigger it was just a few hours ago. by a little after midnight, that area of light snow is coming across most of our pennsylvania counties, into parts of south jersey, another areas moves up to the south, by 6:00 a.m., there's a solid area of snow from the philadelphia region all the way to the poconos, but warmer air is coming up from the south and that's going to change the snow to the ice to the rain. and that timing is extremely critical, neighborhood by neighborhood. and we'll get to that in just a minute. >> in the meantime, it is way too cold to up the steps at the art museum tonight. and we're looking here at 30th street station, and people trying to get home. >> i know you're breaking down the impact for those people in the morning. >> in between the snow and rain, we're talking about ice. that is going to be the biggest concern, that is going to make the roadways very dangerous. so we'll talk about the most dangerous times to be on the road. this is really what you want to avoid. just wait until it changes over to rain and starts to change up a little bit as you head out. we're looking at snow through the lehigh valley, the poconos, philadelphia, and some of our new jersey neighborhoods. the pink shows you where the ice is, and then the rain moving down to the shore. 6:30 in the morning, at this point we expect an icing situation in northern newcastle county, chester county, the philadelphia area, and even some of our new jersey neighborhoods right across the river. 7:30, 8:00 in the morning, this slowly moves to the north as the atmosphere starts to warm. we could still see an ice any mix. some bucks county could be seeing snow so all these areas you could be dealing with pretty treacherous roadways early. and that ice starts to move up into lehigh valley, still in upper bucks county, and that yellow, that's actually rain starting to form as we continue warming up. again, in the morning, we're looking at the primary time from about 6:00 a.m. to about 10:00 a.m. we'll be tracking the temperatures through the entire morning and that's going to show you when things finally do warm up. let's talk about getting the roads ready. a live look at the schuylkill expressway at city avenue. >> from philadelphia to montgome montgomery county, road crews are going to be hitting the area in force. >> reporter: crews expected to be an all nighter. crews say they could be on the roads as early as 1:00 in the morning. >> generally go a few hours to bed early and get a nice nap in and get ready for the phone call. >> reporter: it's a call tom is hoping doesn't come. it's not that he and the public works crews in plymouth road crews are not ready. they spent weeks getting the trucks ready and filled with salt. so they're ready for the night. >> when they call, i'm in. >> reporter: the roads should be pretty clear, in plymouth, they're for snow to start falling after midnight. >> we do all the main roads first, so we handle a lot of state roads and collector streets and once we do that, we'll go into all the neighborhoods. >> and the usually jammed main roads will be quiet. >> reporter: with that mix of overnight snowfall on an icy morning, they're not going to be going anywhere. good news for those who will be bethe wheel who urge you, if you see one of these trucks, stay far behind it. >> they need to have patience for us keeping the roads clear for them so they can get home safely. people who try to pass us, go and spin out and have accidents. just a little bit of patience, slow down they get home much safer. >> reporter: than's the same for those crews that are driving those trucks, they're putting salt on the roads and slow moving traffic will help to get that ice off the roads. speeding won't do anyone any good. and this note, american airlines are allowing passengers to change their flights. philadelphia international airport is ready and stocked with supplies for tomorrow more. if you're flying tomorrow morning, check the airline for possible delays. don't leave the house without turning on the tv and watching nbc10 today. our meteorologists will be watching the temperatures all morning. a young boy died in the fire as philadelphia firefighters batled icy conditions trying to put that fire out. flames raced through the second floor bedroom as firefighters arrived. the fire spread to another home where neighbors rescued an elderly woman. it took firefighters two hours to get it under control because of the freezing conditions. a delaware county police officer who was shot 7 times and survived, went face to face with the man accused of shooting him. daunte island shot christopher dorman. the officer testified that island punched him in the head when he asked to pat him down. then he said that island just started firing. dorman's parents are still thankful they didn't lose their son. >> i have my son and this could be a different christmas for us than it's going to be, and it's going to be a great christmas and we have a lot to be thankful for. >> island will be formally arraigned next month. there's a new plan on track to speed up travel along the northeast corridor. the federal railroad administration laid out it's plans to cut commute business a half hour. one plan is to add a new traffic stop at phil's airport. that means people wouldn't have to change at 30th street station. and straighter tracks in some stretches so trains can go faster. the train going between baltimore and wilmington will be able to go 220 miles an hour. this $120 billion proposed plan would be done over the next 30 years. a state lawmaker finally resigned months after refusing the leave the seat following a guilty plea on money laundering charges, leslie acosta's resignation takes effect january 3. she pleaded guilty in march to stealing hundreds of thaw thousands of dollars from a general fund. police have a warrant out for miguel soto, a 73-year-old woman was followed through the casino and robbed of her purse. president obama going to be involved, the bottom line is sleep late and drive even later and you'll be in pretty good shape. we have a first alert, we issued it two days ago because of this storm, it covers most of our region, except now extreme southern delaware and south jersey. we expanded it this afternoon. that's from 11:00 tonight through saturday morning, accumulating snow, an icy and slippery roads. starting to see a couple of returns, but that is high up in the clouds and not reaching the ground. but a lot of this is. if you've been watching, it just keeps growing and expanding, and this's all part of the system that's moving in this way. now what are we going to have for the timeline? it's a limited portion of the weekend, we're going to have problems. this is 4:00 to 8:00 a.m. snow to mix, the icy mix from 8:00 a.m. to noon, ending from south to north. the afternoon is just fine for travel. the night is going to be warmer. travel issue might be fog by then. and that's about it. hour by hour. watch what happens here afternoon midnight. we have got the snow coming in. another area develops from the south. so by 5:00, 6:00 a.m., it's snowing across most of the area. the darker blues indicating the heavier snow. chester berks, poconos, mercer county, getting snow accumulate at that time. then there's a change to ice, the warm air is coming up from the south, changing the snow to ice, changing from the ice to rain and that mean that the temperatures are extremely critical. hour by hour, and neighborhood by neighborhood, meteorologist erika martin has more on that. >> reporter: glenn, that's right, it will all be about the temperatures in your neighborhood what you will see. some will see snow, some will see ice and of course widespread rain by tomorrow. temperatures by 11:00 p.m., lots of 20s out there, low 20s for lehigh valley. and notice we're seeing southerly winds getting stronger through the overnight hours, so by 8:00 a.m. we're all right seeing warmer temperatures for cape may county. philly, delaware, new jersey, still seeing some 20s. but kent county will see low 30s, at the freezing mark. the concern would be the lehigh valley, outer pa suburbs, the temperature will remain below the freezing mark, so it's all about your temperature in your neighborhood as glenn just mentioned. that will dictate the type of weather you will see. >> and krystal and bill will be here tomorrow to keep track of those temperatures hour by hour. by tomorrow afternoon, we're drying out, the temperature is going up, and then sunday the next area of rain will come in and it will be much warmer during that time. when is the ice going to end? it's mostly rain far to the south, 6:00 to 7:00 a.m., from dover, middletown, up to vineland, 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., most of the philadelphia area, farther to the north, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. for king of prussia, west chester, buckingham and then 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. up through allentown and redding. so if you wait long enough, the weather will improve. a little bit more to the north and west, and the ice may be the toughest thing. and travel to the west or the north or even down to washington, it's not recommended in the morning. sixers-lakers tonight at 8:00 here at the wells fargo center in south philly. it's the first time the lakers will be in town. allen iverson will be in town tonight. i'm
