Cbs 2s don dahler has this exclusive look at what will become the east 72nd street station on the east side. Reporter the Second Avenue subway is no longer just a pipe dream. 10 stories underground, nearly two miles of track have been laid. Platforms have been built and three stations are taking shame. The work is about 85 complete. The next 15 are probably the toughest one to accomplish because we are talking about integrating a brandnew line with something that goes back 100 years. Reporter michael oversees the project for the metropolitan transportation authority. But for many new yorkers, it feels like this has been going on for 100 years alone. I have been told that i am at least 86 years behind. Reporter cbs this morning hired a Drone Company to survey the progress. Whats the main challenge . All the obstacles. Thats an active construction site. Reporter but kind of cool . Very cool. The drone is now coming up from the south at the 63rd street station back way. They havent lead the trainings yet. Reporter the tracks they are putting down are vibration reducing tracks so you wont get the rumbling that you get in the street level tracks. This is the first major expansion of the system in years. The Second Avenue subway was first proposed in the 1920s but over the decades funding was derailed by the Great Depression and world war ii. The 70s financial crisis and the costs of simply maintaining the Worlds Largest subway system. As the delays piled up, the subway line became a punch line. Believe me, when they finish the Second Avenue subway this apartment will quadruple in value. Right now, the east side of manhattan home to about 650,000 people more than the entire population of nashville has just one subway line. The mta says phase 1 from 96th street to 63rd street is on track. But the original plan called for a subway 8. 5 miles long that would be finished by 2020. Phillip is writing a book on the Second Avenue subway, a former mta planning manager. He doubts more stations will open during his lifetime. 4. 5 billion for three stations . The whole thing when done should be about 15 stations so they need another 5 billion or 6 billion for the next phase of the project and they dont have it. Reporter what about phase 2. We dont have yet the funds for it. Reporter do you think the state is committed to finishing this project . I believe so, yes. Reporter they are perpetually cashstrapped and already have a 14 billion hole in the Capital Program for the mta. But phase 1 of the Second Avenue subway is not to blame.
