People here will talk about take a look at the beautiful scene on the lawn of the basilica as people receive holy communion. Spirits are high under a brilliant blue sky. It is the perfect setting for a spirit filled few hours with a pope beloved by his flock and by many outside of it. Everyone at the basilica aware of the history being made. The first time pope francis has celebrated mass in the united states. And the firstever canonization on u. S. Soil. We are hoping for good weather for friday. Lets head to cbs 2s Hazel Sanchez live with more on park security and preparations for the papal visit. Hazel. Reporter seeing the pope here in central park is definitely one of the hottest tickets in town. Its only those people that have tickets that will be able to get past this steel security fence to see the procession on friday and those people will have to leave a few luxuries at home. Barricades lined the procession route inside central park where pope will be greeted by 80,000 ticketed spectators to prevent gate crashers, more than 20,000 feet of 8foothigh steel mesh fencing has been built along central park west. Locals are still hoping to sneak a peek. I dont have tickets but im a native new yorker and i know how to navigate the city very well and i plan to um, try to see him tomorrow. Reporter an nypd command center is in place outside the park. Police installed security cameras along the papal motorcade route where the central Park Conservancy says they are inspecting 2,000 trees for possible hazards. Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers will be along the route. We are very good at planning but we also have to be adaptable with this pope his penchant for responsibility native. Reporter all spectators with tickets for the areas during the papal visit have been given a long list of prohibited items. You cant bring a backpack. You cannot bring chairs with you. No umbrellas. No selfie sticks. None of those things. Well just bring water with us and some food. Reporter the pope is expected to arrive here at central park at 5 00 on friday all spectators encouraged to arrive early. The gates open at 11 00. They close at 3 30. Metronorth is changing its schedule on friday to accommodate the extra crowds. And new Jersey Transit is sticking to its regular schedule but will have trains on standby just in case. Will we be able to put an extra train if demand is required . Absolutely. Our schedule is so robust. You are advised to use the subway instead of buses where possible street closures would be a real challenge because of the richle effect on street traffic. A little girl five years old who slipped beyond the security barricades they tried to stop her but then the pope waved her on. He decided that he had to meet her gave her a hug and a kiss. St. Agnes on east 43rd street had a vatican flag on display ahead of the popes visit this week but the flag was stolen and later found shredded on the church steps. The church ordered another one put it up monday. The new flag disappeared yesterday and is still missing. The same day that the second vatican flag was stolen somebody also stole the churchs american flag. So far, no arrests. Newly planted trees are dying of thirst and withering away. And that really is upsetting some Nassau County residents. These trees replaced others that were chopped down to make way for safer sidewalks. Cbs 2s Jennifer Mclogan reports tonight from seaford. They are dying. They are absolutely dying. Reporter this homeowner and neighbors want answers. Why are vulnerable newly planted saplings dying in such great numbers . So why doesnt somebody finish the job when they start somebody . Reporter although part of the controversial project to repave sidewalks some say allowing young trees to which they are away in need of care morally wrong and waste of taxpayer dollars. We run up down this road and were taken by surprise because they are tiny. Reporter the county attributes tree trouble to the dry summer saying they tried to water. New trees were planned after sidewalk repairs and will be replaced by the contractor if they didnt survive. We were here last year when 160 majestic beech, oak and maples were removed and hundreds more on another road so roots could be ripped out and concrete poured. Thats why we moved to long island for the trees. We dont need that many sidewalks. Reporter civic groups tried and failed to stop the project. In the end courts ruled nassau had the right to remove trees to fix sidewalks in keeping with the americans with disabilities act. The trees destroy the sidewalks and make it difficult for seniors. There is a better way according to environmentalists. New york city repairs the sidewalks without destroying trees. Reporter save our trees is appealing. They dont want it to be a precedent. Allowing large trees to be chopped down for the sake of sidewalk repairs. From the county seat in lonnie quinn here with the first day of fall and mild weather. But High Pressure theres one high that will exit the area what we dealt with today giving us a pretty day. We are mild and sunny again tomorrow. If, thats the big word if, if we see any rain in our future, the weekend, if we have catch any rain its going to be because of the system down to our south. But right now, almost all the models are taking this out to sea. Not so much in our area. I do think well see a few more clouds in the area. If you catch that rain it would be on sunday but i think its more just building cloud cover. So for tomorrow its mostly sunny warm 80 degrees. Across the board, 75 on friday. Still looking beautiful overhead. Saturday 74. Lets call that one partly sunny. Then on sunday, id say even a bit more cloud cover.
