A bizarre mystery continues this morning, concerning a new jersey mother who vanished. She disappeared four months after being shot eight times in her car. Cbs 2s Jessica Snyder spoke to her mother, whos been driven to tears fearing the worst. Reporter the julius family spent six agonizing days wondering where the 41yearold mother of two teens is. She met up with a female friend last tuesday and hasnt been heard from since. I knew something was wrong when she didnt come home. Shes always home. Reporter shes had a traumatic past few months. At the end of november, she was inside this car when police say a man wearing a mask walked up and fired several shots into several times and grazing her teenage daughter. Now, juliuss mother fears this is connected to her disappearance. The shooter hasnt been found. If anybodys holding her, let her come home. She have a family and the kids who want her home. Reporter julius friend tells her family that she went to lunch with julius on tuesday and then dropped her off here station. The only problem is, Lyndon Police say theyve gone through the Surveillance Video and theyve seen no sign of tyrita or her friends. Police tell the julietis family the last ping from her cell phone was near the train station, but the phone is now going straight to voicemail and all credit cards were left at home. And new information on the shooting death of an undercover Maryland Police officer shot and killed outside a Police Station sunday. Authorities say the death was due to friendly fire. A financial settlement for the family of a student killed by a pleasantville Police Officer. He was shot as he drove away from a disturbance outside a bar in 2010. The body of harry hernandez, the third victim of saturdays deadly tugboat crash near the Tappan Zee Bridge has been located. Divers say its inside the sunken boat in the hudson river. Were told a commercial maritime Salvage Company will begin trying to raise the boat as early as today. A new jersey family is mourning the death of three family members following a devastating house fire. 10 members of the may family were asleep. A 2yearold and 7yearold died. A 52yearold was also killed. Several relatives were injured. Now, the family says the firefighters were slow to respond. They came late and when they got here, they did not go in. Back in january, a man was actually murdered inside of this shelter as he slept. The mayor hopes that by investing more in the citys shelter system in terms of difference in terms of preventing violence. Immediately after the murder of devin black inside of the boulevard shelter back in january, there was a visible presence of nypd officers and security on patrol. The former teacher nearly decapitated by another man in the shelter. It lets us know that theyre concerned with our well being. Reporter from murdered and assaults to the couldnt occasion of dangerous weapons, like these, recovered from five brooklyn shelters in just one day. Mayor de blasio has now ordered the nypd to oversee Safety Measures in the shelters. Among the changes, the nypd will begin retraining all department of Homeless Services security staff. The city will reestablish a Domestic Violence program in shelters and the administration has a new comprehensive way of tracking and reporting Critical Incidents. Teamsters president Gregory Floyd represents the security and he says change is needed. We are under seige. Residential breakins here up 57 percent. My door was kicked in. I walked into my room and my room was a complete mess. It was turned upside down and it was something that, you know, i felt violated. It wasnt a good feeling at all. Reporter last year at this time, 134 residential burglaries in nassau. So far this year, 174. Thats prompted the creation of a new task force. The burglary pattern team, aimed at stemming the crime outbreak. When you hear of a burglary on your break, a lot of people think, i hope im not next. We get that. We understand it. About it. Weve put this team in place and i can honestly tell you there are four great detectives and a supervisor who work with with the village detectives, as well. Reporter the team scored big, arresting this man who worked as a waiter in manhattan and charged him with 17 nassau burglaries. Experts fear the motivation is drugfueled. There is no doubt in my mind that the heroin crisis, its whats driving the increase in crime here in Nassau County. This is a community thats locked in the grip of addiction not treated appropriately. A plan will be unveiled today to reduce violence. Janelle burrell has more live from east harlem. Hi, janelle. Reporter hi, chris and mary. You recall a couple of months ago, back in january, a man was murdered inside one of the citys homeless shelters. Well, now the mayor is investing more money, more resources and more manpower, hoping to stop the violence in the shelter system. Immediately after the murder of devon black in the boulevard shelter back in january, there was a visible presence of nypd officers and security on patrol. The former teacher nearly decapitated by another man in the shelter. For murders and assaults to the womens like these, recovered weapons like these, recovered from five brooklyn shelters in just one day. The mayor ordered the nypd to oversee Safety Measures in the shelters. Among the changes, the nypd will begin retraining all department of Homeless Services security staff. The city will reestablish a Domestic Violence program in shelters and the administration has a new comprehensive way of tracking and reporting Critical Incidents. The teamsters president represents the security guards who work in the shelters and he says change is needed. We are really under seige. Reporter earlier this month, city Human Resources commissioner steve banks spoke with cbs 2 about the plans to better prepare security staff. Were going to be providing them with additional training and designating particular peace officers to have tasers where needed. As part of this overhaul, the de Blasio Administration percent more in terms of Financial Investments in this system than the previous administration. I dont put a lot of stock in the survey. What i hear from the pba is complaints, not constructive suggestions or after effort to work for all. Reporter the police union surveyed more than 6,000 members and found 87 percent found the city has become less safe since 2014. 55 percent say a lot less safe. On a scale of 1 to 10, morale among officers was 2. 49. It echoes the survey that we conducted that we shared with you back in 2014. The police commissioner, bill bratton, is referring to an nypd study from 2014, finding half of the department was negative about the job because of public perception. The new pba survey echoes that. 96 percent feeling police and Public Relations have worseened. 70 percent say greatly worseened. And 96 percent agree that suspects are now likely to resist arrest. The pba president released a statement, saying the survey illustrates the current Public Safety policies arent working and Police Officers risk their lives to protect their communities from real crime and mayhem. And now they live in constant fear of lawsuits, public complaints and are not supported by either the elected officials or the public. Vandals shot out the windows of parked cars in several towns. Detectives are searching for a white suv, possibly a chevrolet that was seen at one of the incidents. The mayor will announce a plan today to overhaul security at the citys homeless shelters. It follows a spike in violation. Janelle burrell is live with more in east harlem. Hi, janelle. Reporter hi, chris. Were just outside a shelter where back in january, a man was attacked and killed inside by a former resident. Now this morning, just on the other side of that door, there are two nypd officers there for additional security presence and the mayor is hoping this new plan will enable similar security across the shelter system. Immediately after the murder of devin black inside of the boulevard shelter back in january, there was a visible presence of nypd officers and security on patrol. It lets us know that theyre concerned with our well being. From murders and assaults to the confiscation of dangerous weapons like these, recovered from five brooklyn shelters in just one day. The mayor has now ordered the nypd to oversee Safety Measures in the shelters. Among the changes, the nypd will begin retraining all department of Homeless Services security staff. The city will reestablish a Domestic Violence program in shelters and the administration has a next comprehensive way of tracking and reporting Critical Incidents. The teamsters president represents the security guards who work in the sheltershand says change is needed. We are really under seige. Reporter earlier this month, steve banks spoke with cbs 2 about the plans to better prepare security staff. Were going to be providing them with additional training and designating particular peace officers to have tasers where needed. Reporter now, the de Blasio Administration says that this is a major financial investment, as well. Thank you, kyla. Police officers in illinois made a mad dash to save a toddler who stopped breathing. The officers were running out of their squad car to the side of the road. Police say an 18monthold girl was apparently choking and stopped breathing. The officers performed the heimlich maneuver and cpr. She was rushed to the hospital and made a full recovery. The new York City School system is one of nationwide but a new study says the policy doesnt spur weight loss. The study by the National Academy of scientists found those labeled overweight or obese generally did not go to lose weights. In fact, some got heavier. At least 19 states have now instituted the report cards. For the first time in nfl official acknowledged a link between football and the brain disease cte.
