And there was a boy that was in the commercial with me, and the reason part of the reason i was eating the cereal was because i just literally couldnt breathe around boys at that point. And i would just go agh like, run up and down the stage and eat the cereal. Theyd b go, hayden, dont eat the cereal. And i was like hey. 5yearsold. We are in new york city this week setting up some shows from the legendary cutting room and picking off some fantastic interviews that youll be seeing throughout the upcoming weeks here on last call. Tonights show were gonna shine our spotlight on the zany moon documentary, lunarcy thats coming up in a little bit. Plus, were at the el rey for the music of vacationer. But first, we return to l. A. For our sitdown interview. And you know him from both the hangover and National Treasure franchises, and you can catch him weekly as one of the stars of the new normal here on nbc. From stk, heres my time with justin bartha. I love what you do. Carson thank you. I really do. I mean, you are an unsung hero. Carson thank you. Justin and not to i mean, its, like, someone thats so passionate about music for so long. And, like, good music and has, like, a specific taste and just does his thing. Like, doesnt cause any fuss. Like, is just you seem like just such a professional man. Carson aw, thats nice of you. Thank you. And you really are a good, like, role model of a noncrazy person in the business. Carson how are things at the show . Things are good. Thanks. Carson you wanted the role of david bad. Yeah. Carson you called ryan murphy i mean, i wanted to work with ryan you know, i read that carson thats guys so amazing. Yeah, he is pretty amazing. Carson what is he like . Ive tried to get him on this show i mean, i love everything that guy does. Hes just a brilliant guy. I mean, he has a very specific point of view, and he is just very much in touch with what he wants to say. So, even though all the genres that he does like american horror, and he did nip tuck and glee obviously they vary in genre, but they still have a very they very specifically go through the prism of what he wants to say. Carson why did you want david so bad that you called . And what was their reaction to that . Well, i wanted to work with him. I just saw this amazing stuff being done on television, and and he obviously, i think, is one of the best that does it. So, i heard he had a project, and i just kind of called to try to read it. And i read it, and i thought it was great. And then, i just met with them and talked about it, and we all seemed to vibe on what the message of the show was and what we kind of want to say with not just the character of david, but also portraying a gay relationship in a very realistic way and not kind of trivialize the emotions and the, you know actually make the guy a full, wellrounded character and not just like a punch line. This is our surrogate, goldie. And this is david. I would call him my soul mate if he could learn how to rinse a plate before he put it in the dishwasher. [ light laughter ] you look like youre about to pop. What are you . About 38 weeks . Yes do you practice midwifery . Oh, no, no. Just a regular man. Fireman actually. Well, technically a smoke jumper. You know. Forest fires, mountains. Yeah, its hard work. So, you guys must be just so excited. You know, obviously, the title of the show, the new normal, is on the nose in a sense, but it does explain a lot of different aspects of what were trying to do. And i think, you know, having a half hour show thats not just a situation comedy, it also, you know, delves into you know, theres a lot of dramatic elements, and theres we try to make it as realistic as possible. Carson right. Obviously, some of the stuff is a little heightened, but we always, from the second we sit down cause i had no interest in doing a sitcom. I just had no interest in doing it. So, you know, we really talked about how this wasnt, you know a carson wouldnt be like a typical sitcom. It wasnt gonna be exactly. It wasnt gonna be a typical sitcom. It was, you know really wanted to explore the lives of these characters and still be really funny, but also have a really deep heart. If anyone asks, i am not a doctor. Just a regular dad here to open my mind to the exciting possibilities of alternative birthing methods. For which i thank you and i grant you your number one choice for our next romantic getaway destination. Oh, cape canaveral. Carson we live in a different world. The situation in this comedy, the new normal, obviously is what it is, but, to me, to zoom out of that, its that the world is different now and must be frustrating when the conversation about this show is continually about something as narrow, really, as the sexuality of these two characters. Is that frustrating at times . Uh, i mean, its not really frustrating. Carson you got a question the other day asked to you that said, justin, have you been okay with people knowing youre straight . Somebody actually asked you that question. Who asked me that . Carson in an interview. Oh, really . Carson what does that mean . Yeah, i dont know. I mean, the whole you know, this societys obsession with sexuality, ive always found kind of ridic i mean, it seems so bizarre to me. Carson does that cloud the promotion of a great show that ryan murphys trying to do and that you i mean, i think once you watch the show, you realize its not just about the gay thing or the straight thing. You know, it just that is another element of the show because its the grounding force of the show is a healthy relationship between two people carson mhmm. And them trying to start a family. Carson how about the idea of just the fear of parenting . What did you know about that . Well, i have it. I mean, i think everyone can identify with any fear when it comes to having children and starting a family. And i think that, you know, we get into every single issue that you can possible get in when it comes to, you know, having a child. And its not just about surrogacy. Its actually about having a baby and what do you do you know. Carson right. And its not only about two men and how they do it. Its just about a couple and how they navigate that. Carson you love theatre, i know. Yeah. Carson you like being a character for a couple of hours, then walking out of the place and its just a different muscle. Carson just a different thing, right. Its a different its a different challenge. Its fun, and its i mean, you know, ive been i was in new york in 1996 chasing the carson daly dream. At 1515 broadway, right . Carson thats right. And i did every job on a movie. I did set pa, office pa, editing. Carson its a thankless job. I was an editing pa on the yards. You know, that james gray movie. I used to get james gray starbucks. Carson how has that helped you now . Ive seen, you know ive seen a lot of actors kind of not treat everybody with respect. I mean, its you have to realize that everything you do is a collaborative effort in any form. Doing this tv show, doing anything, and its youre a piece of the puzzle. So, having that knowledge, it just is easier to navigate through the system. Carson is it fun getting a call every year knowing that the hangover was gonna have a new year to do that . Is that, like, oh, yes, were gonna do that again . I mean, thats a bless i mean, that movies just been a blessing for me. I mean, its like the best half hour of screen time i think ive ever had. I mean, its just carson why . What about it . You know, ive been a part of successful movies before, but that movie, you know sometimes when something you do really touches a nerve, you know, right time, right place, right people, its just an interesting ride to go on because it happens so carson infrequently. So infrequently. Carson its anomaly. It is, like, you know, making movies it really takes a little bit of magic no matter how good the people you work with, the scripts, the director. You know, sometimes it just doesnt come together. But Everyone Wants to make a good movie. So, that movie, i think, had all the right pieces, and then, it just so happened to hit at the right time. Carson right. And people you know, it becomes, like, part of, you know, the culture. Its really weird that you see that you walk through las vegas, and you see slot machines with your face on them and you see you know, its like its become it has a life of its own, literally. Carson thank you so much, justin. Its good to spend time with you. Of course. Carson appreciate it. Anytime. Carson that was justin bartha. The new normal airs tuesdays at 9 30, 8 30 central on nbc. When we come back, vacationer performs from the el rey and lunarcy will get the spotlight treatment next. Really is it really . . . No way [ jim koch ] why are these people surprised . They just found out they were secretly tasting sam adams boston lager. Its got a good color. Its got a good hoppy smell to it, its got a good body. Its very smooth. I like that. Smooth but it does have flavor. You were drinking sam adams boston lager. Oh, really . You definitely got me. Its a good taste. Its smooth. Its really good. This is the best day ever. I obviously was selling myself short by not even considering this as a possibility. [ female announcer ] resisting the magical taste of silky smooth dove® chocolate is difficult. With 41 megapixels and reinvented zoom, nothing else comes close. Carson and welcome back to last call. For tonights spotlight, we return to austin, texas and introduce you to an incredible film screened at this years south by southwest. Lunarcy is a feature documentary centered around a group of people who have one thing in common a shared obsession with the moon. For more, we meet the films director, simon ennis. I honestly believe dennis hope is the smartest man in the entire world. For you to get this amazing idea and make literally millions of dollars off of, you know, owning the moon and selling it, and finding a legal basis for doing it. You know, if you can think of a better idea than that, then you should be a millionaire, too. Im simon ennis, and im the director of lunarcy lunarcy is a comic documentary about a desperate group of dreamers and schemers who have all devoted their lives to the moon. The main characters in the film are alan bean, whos an apollo 12 astronaut. He was the fourth man to walk on the moon and since retiring as an astronaut, hes been painting lunar landscapes. He puts a little bit of moon dust in every single painting. The moon really is gray. The rocks, the dirt. The sky is black. As an artist, to use reality as the beginning and then a guy from texas named chris carson, who is starting his own d. I. Y. Space program. He wants to be the first person to leave earth, never come back. He wants to go and live on the moon. Im a member of the National Space society, the planetary society, the moon society, and probably some other organizations i dont remember, in the space field as well as others which have nothing to do with space. The luna project, i guess you could say, represents impatience. I want to go to the moon to live there. And i want to go now. And then theres dennis hope, whos a fellow in northern california, he owns the moon. He claimed it legally through the United Nations back in 1980. And hes made over 30 million selling it for the last 30 years. If you try and sell something and you succeed, it diminishes you as a human being. This is as real as any other properties you can buy on earth. I follow the declaration of ownership with the United Nations, otherwise i wouldnt do it. The 1967 u. N. Treaty on outer space says that no nation can claim ownership of the moon, or planets, or anything. But it didnt say anything about private individuals, and so with that loophole, dennis filed the claim with the u. N. And sells it one acre at a time. I, myself, am a property owner. At the end of our time together, dennis was generous enough to gift me one acre. I live in a great neighborhood because my producer is next door, my cinematographer is on the other side of him. Originally, i was actually looking to make a much more straightforward documentary. Within the course of a week, i read like three articles about the moon. One was actually about dennis. One of them was about the moon and ancient religion, and one of them was a really scientific based article on how we could mine elements in the moon to maybe solve the Energy Crisis here on earth. So i thought, wow, theres all the different ways humans have looked at the moon. That could be an interesting subject. Pretty quickly, the movie became a lot less about the moon, and more about these people. And how inspiring going after a really big dream is. We premiered the film originally at the Toronto International Film Festival in september, so ive been kind of like, doing the Film Festival circuit since then. I come from a totally narrative film background. This is the first time ive ever tried to do a documentary. So, it was a really different way of working, and i really enjoyed it. I guess overall, the thing i learned most was just, how much beauty and value there is in pursuing a huge dream. Even Something Like going to live on the moon, that, when you first hear it, sounds kind of crazy. But, when you get into thinking about it, and you know, having a vision for pursuing this big, like, quixotic dream and project, you know, just how wonderful that is i was really inspired by that, and really moved. Carson that was the director, simon ennis. Lunarcy premieres on epix april 3rd. Coming up, vacationers at the el rey, and more last call after this.
