Why he feels it is time to banish what many feel is the racist legacy of former red sox owner tom yawkey. Yawkey, who has a street and an m. B. T. A. Station named after him presided over the red sox during a racist past and an admitted shameful record of discrimination during his years. At a time when act vis, especially on College Campuses are clamoring for renaming monuments to racist history it is long past time for boston to think long and hard about the official yawkey legacy. We have invited Adrian Walker to the show this morning. Good to see you again. Okay. Lets get into it. Why did you write this column . Why do you feel boston needs to make this change . It seems timely at the people are talking about history. And how. Whether it is time to reevaluate our historical monuments. Backyard in the form of yawkey way. It seemed like a good time to do it. Again, that is the street they block off. Former jersey street. Part of it was renamed in 1976 to yawkey way. A yawkey died. In front of fenway. Right near. What are some of the, i guess, details of this quote, racist legacy of the yawkey that you wrote about. Well, it begins with the infamous Jackie Robinson tryout at fenway in april of 1945. He and two others, sam jethro who ended up playing if the for the boston braves, had a disastrous tryout at fenway. Only in the sense that members of the red sox brass treated them horribly. And allegedly, one of them may or may not have been iraqiy. Screamed a racial epithet at them. Jackie robinson. An american icon. Absolutely. They were at the end of their tryout. I guesses a voice boomed out from the speakers on the field, get those nwords off the field. That is right. No one has ever denied the comment was made. The question is who made it. Iraqis general manager, they were all there. Its never been clearly established who said it. Cliff keen who covered the red sox for years, mostly for the globe always believed it was iraqiy. Really, wow. What has been the response to your column so . Its been a huge response. Probably got as much of a reaction as anything i have ever written because of the combustible mix of race and an organization and dear. It is about 50 positive. 40 negative. Whats been interesting. More than the numbers, very of the question. Now, to be clear, renaming the streets and the t stop, it is really not in the red sox control. Right. I believe it is the city who would rename the street and the m. B. T. A. They are the ones who have the is that correct . That is correct. Yes. Have you gotten reaction at all. Did you send your to the officials at the m. B. T. A. . Really . Any reaction from them at all . Or just silence. No official reaction. Okay. A lot of people might listen of people, i would imagine, will be claiming that these proposals to sanitize monuments by removing honors to anyone who ever elicited racist conduct has gone too far and that no historical figure was present. I imagine you have gotten reaction. I real are gee. I really reject that idea that this is erasing history. This reflects who we are now and what we believe ourselves to be as a city. That is the real question. The real issue is that we never thought about it before. Far, its gone hardly anywhere. You can count the things that have actually been renamed on your fingers. Thats right. Okay. One globe letter said if we eliminated leaders who were homophobic, we might have to consider eliminating all memorials, all named memorials. Yawkeys tendencies, were they a reflection of his time depp spite his flaws . Some people might argue that. They should not negate his contributions. The jimmy fund, the Yawkey Foundation and so forth. Contributions which include the Yawkey Foundation, the jimmy fund. There is a yawkey boys and girls club in roxbury. But you know, again, this isnt about erasing anything. As for him being a man of his time, his time was the same as the branch cookie time. He broke the color barrier. I dont think the man of his time argument holds water. You consider the red sox were the very last to integrate. Everybody else was doing it all around. They passed on willie mays. Willie mays. The only reason they did was because he was black. You suggested as one of the possible names. Renaming it would be ted williams. Yeah. I kind of like the idea of yawkey way being named for a significant figure in red sox history. And not many people remember that it was williams who called for the inclusion of Negro League Players in the hall of fame in his hall of fame induction speech in 1966. And because he was ted williams, it happened. Well, maybe who knows . Maybe it will happen. He has a tunnel. We will see about that. Real quickly, john henry, by the way, the current owner of the red sox, he has never been one to sugarcoat this at all. Never at all. He talked about the shameful past. A direct quote. And Larry Lucchino talked about the undeniable legacy of racism in the organization. Okay. Adrian walker, we will leave it right there. We will see what kind of reaction we get and we will keep our eyes on this one. Show. All right, adrian. Thanks for coming. In coming next, some Good Business news. A recent study shows 60 of bostonians Small Business owners are planning to hire. More than double what it was two years ago. More details right here coming up. Small business openers in the boston area are overwhelmingly optimistic according to the fall, 2015 bank of america Small Business owner report. The semiannual study exploring the concerns,s a separations and perspectives of Small Business owners in boston and around the country. In addition to confidence in their businesses, boston Small Business owners sfrs increased confidence in their local economy. For a closer look at these findings, we have invited two spokes penns for the fall, 2015 bank of america Small Business owner report. Jonathan dowst is a Senior Vice President of sales america. And the Senior Vice President market manager. Welcome to urban update. Thank you for coming in, gentlemen. Went about putting this study together and why. Sure, byron. Thank you. Basis about a thousand Small Businesses. We asked them about their challenges, their outlook. Owners. We also then survey about 300 Small Business owners and each of nine local markets. Boston being one of those markets. The point of the survey really is to bring a Public Discourse and dialogue to the issues that they raise and that they have as Small Business owners. Any time we can have an open dialogue and debate about issues, we get better at the answers and we make progress. We are glad to contribute to that dialogue. Thank you for giving us a place to do that today. Okay. Happy to do it. Andre, talk to me about some of the most revealing and interesting findings in your study. I think we can put some of these stats up on the screen. As you talk about them. Right there. There you go. 60 of boston Small Business owners plan to hire. Absolutely. And i think if i could use one it is optimism. We have doubled in just two years, the expectation of the number of Small Business owners looking to hire. We went through one of the great e depressions, if you will, that any one of us have had to live through. We are seeing an increase confidence, and thats what you are seeing here with these numbers. With 60 of the Business Owners looking to hire within the next year or so. That pentup demand here. Also, 52 believe the local economy will improve in 2016. That is increase there. Correct. Again, thats really, i think a tribute to a lot of the growth that Business Owners are finding within their client base. Their increased revenues. What they are looking for in terms of really looking to get more employees to work with them. To help fund and foster that growth. Its really good to see that the local economy, our Small Business owners are largely optimistic about the direction jonathan, who uses this kind of data . Why is it important to know . The goal is that all the participants in the local market economy are informed by the data and use it. Whether it is Small Business owners or policymakers, government officials, bankers, investors, by getting a handle on what Small Business owners challenges are, they can get together and we can meet those challenges. Magic happens. When we are all informed and all on the same page. Okay. Andre, now, this is not all roses here. There are some areas of concern for some. Maybe we can take a look at those categories. I guess some people worry about them. Correct. I mean, you are looking at. I think, four really primary categories that are driving some of the concern and less optimism in some folks. Obviously, the increase in rates. When we did this survey a few months ago, there was a possibility, obviously, now this morning as people are slight increase in the interest rate. That certainly has come to fruition. It is other factors. The other factor is the upcome egglection. It is not a it will call statement. Any type there is uncertainty in the marketplace and you dont know who is going to be leading the country, starting in 2017, that does foster a level of uncertainty. And concern about what the be. Certainly, International Events have also factored into some of the concern that our Business Owners have. Particularly, in china and greece. We saw in the last couple of years. Some turmoil. And while we are very. They say politics is still local, certainly, International Events do concern our Business Owners. And lastly, for a lot of Business Owners, there are concerns as they are looking to hire new employees. The potential increase in the minimum wage. How will that affect their business . Always seems to create uncertainty, as you say. That is what Business Owners dont like. Jonathan, interestingly, boston Small Business owners, from what im reading here, are less concerned about cybersecurity than their national counterparts. Talk about why that might be. Well, i cant necessarily pinpoint why that would be if case. But we did identify in the survey that bostonarea Small Businesses have had incidents of Cybersecurity Breaches at only half the rate of the national average. That could contribute to their both lack of preparedness and their concern about what would happen if a breach does happen to their Small Business. And if i could use that as a way to bridge back to any earlier questions about why we do the survey. If im. Eats say im a cybersecurity consultant in the boston area and i read that Small Business owners dont feel prepared, that is a business opportunity. If im an m. I. T. Researcher in the technology space, thats a research opportunity. If im at the Kennedy School over at harvard, and im a Public Policy opportunity. So when these things come to the fore font, that is why we do the survey and thank you, again, for giving us the opportunity to put them in the market. Okay. Happy to do it. That will have to be it right there. Thanks for coming in. And sharing that information. Im glad to hear that things are looking up for Small Business in terms of their confidence. And thats overall what the survey says. Yes. Great news. Okay. All right. Collegebound students and their families pay attention. When we come back, some very Important Information on Financial Aid, scholarships, and options that you have when picking the right schools. That is right here on urban update. December is the month when Many High School seniors have narrowed down their top still, there is a great deal of information that can help collegebound students and their families as they begin to make their final decision of which school to choose. To help us navigate through the new options, we have invited the president of the association of independent colleges and universities in massachusetts. Rich doherty. Who advocates for increased needbased student aid and as he represents 58 independent colleges and universities throughout massachusetts, and the 280,000 students who also on the show this morning, dr. Adrian haugabrook, the Vice President for Student Success and engagement. With more than 25 years of Higher Education leadership, he is a National Expert on afterschool education policy and has been called upon by capitol hill to present on afterschool issues. Welcome, gentlemen. Thanks for coming in. Adrian, let me start with you. If you are a collegebound senior, what should you be doing this december . Being collegebound implies that you are collegeready. Year, this is a great time to ensure that all of your set up. This is the best time to do that. Begin checking in with your High School Guidance counselors to ensure that all the courses that you need for your application process as well as your recommendations and other things are lined up. And then the third thing that i would suggest is that if you have already applied to institutions or have considering, to go ahead and develop those relationships with the admissions counselors at those institutions so you begin to understand the college process. Wow. A good point. Making those contacts with the college you are looking at. Rich doherty, cost obviously, a huge concern for families. What can young people do to make college more affordable . Sure. Excellent question. And it can seem daunting, but im here to tell you it is manageable. Typically, paying for college involves some contribution from a student and their family, but there is a tremendous amount of Financial Aid and scholarships out there for students. So at the state level, massachusetts has a state scholarship program. Last year, the legislature appropriated 96 million for needbased students receive grants at the federal level. We just got some good news this week. That the pell grant was going level. Almost 5,900 at the maximum level. And most importantly, i think people would be shocked at the amount of Financial Aid that the colleges give to students themselves. So our 58 college that is you referenced earlier, this year needbased Financial Aid to students. And then there is another part of money. Pot of money for students who may have just been outstanding students so that there is some merit aid out there as well. All those sources of Financial Aid can help a student get over the cost shock. Adrian, what would you say to a student who. Whose dream college is looking out of reach based on the price . I think one of the things to consider is what define that is dream institution or that dream college. We often advise students to have several choices in mind. Institutional fit. Whats going to be the best fit for me. What institution is really going to help me succeed. Relative to the Financial Aid aspect of this and the cost piece, is never give up until you have actually received your final Financial Aid award. Then also be willing and able to compare that against other institutions. The thing that is poornt to remember is that it is not about the sticker price. It is about what will be the net cost to you and your family. Is there anything students can do when they get to college that helps them cut the overall cost before they graduate . Absolutely. So it will seem simple. But graduate on time. If you can graduate in four years and then in year five, you are out in your career, making money, paying off any loans you might have, you are going to be way ahead of the game. Too often, even at the federal sixyear Graduation Rate as being more than norm. You know, i think most people have grown up thinking four years is proper time to get your degree to college. I think that is one of the really important things a student can do. Adrian, a lot of massachusetts colleges are right around boston or in boston. Talk to me about some benefits of going to school close to home. First, boston has a great infrastructure because of the number of colleges, universities. It is a city that is built to accommodate the College Student and the collegegoing process. There is a culture to it. There is transportation. Cultural aspects to the city. Student discounts that College Students can get. Infrastructure that supports it. The second thing is that boston is really a hub city. It is not just boston but its access to worcester, other and all throughout the the third thing they would say is that it really has a support system for what i would call professional internship opportunities and other experiences and then the fourth thing is that. A very recent data point that came out through the census. 71 of the adult employed here in boston are between the ages of 18 and 34. So this is a great city to graduate and begin a career. Okay. Twof wrap things up. For people watching right now, who might want to take some advice, important web sites they should be looking at. There is one right there. Sure. Maybe one of the first ones is laughter okay. A couple of other places to the. Okay. Adrian haugabrook. Rich doherty, thanks for a lot of families and a lot of students will appreciate it. I know the parents will. Okay. When we come back, a reallife brady bunch mom shows you how using a few coupons, store specials, and discounts can make a difference in your wallet. The details right here coming up. Our next guest, meghan karon is a mom of six. With a reallife brady bunch. She is an english teacher. Dealhunter. Part of the way she has managed the finances for a family of six. To tell us more about what she has learned as ay shopper, we now welcome meghan. Welcome to urban update. Thanks for coming in. Thanks. A lot of people could use advice this time of year. With all the shopping going on. First, tell me about your family and i guess, you really are a brady bunch family. We are the brady bunch. Yes. Thank you. My husband and i were married five years ago. I do ironically, have three daughters. My husband has two daughters and one son. And we still dont have alice. That is okay. We are wishing for her. Every year that goes by. But yes. Okay. Wow. Help with the family finances. And you have become pretty good at it, i understand. Yes. As you can imagine. Everything we go to do is doubled. Being a family of eight is very expensive. And we want to give all of our children every experience that they want and need. And so one of the ways that i started to do that was by clipping coupons and then with the use of my cell phone, i have been able to do a loft digital couponing as well. Well. Correct. What about. How about the inserts that come from the newspapers and digital experiences with clipping digital . I still do both. I used clipped coupons. My primary source of savings really comes from digital coupons. Using my smart phone mostly. I think that its something important, too. As my daughters know, they have been able to create an app for savings. And learn how to be saf y shoppers. Okay. These purchases . Do you save lot of money . You must. I do. I do. One of the things i think thats most important is that its not only about the savings of the dollar. Sometimes with pricematching, it is one of those things where i need to save my time as well. And so with pricematching, you can. Instead of trying to find the sort of policy that every store has online, you may be able to find that on your phone as well. We are looking at this apple ipad air 2 list price. Pricematch. Savings. So this is what you are talking about . Yes. With pricematching, now, you can actually use one of my favorite apps. Within the snip snap app. It is called scout. If you go to scout, it will actually scout the savings for you. And so all you have to do is take a picture of the product which in this case, the ipad. And ask, what is the best where can i find that . Scout will do that for you. It will show you the product. Then it will show you savings and the pricematching policy. Here are some more apps. Yes. So there is a great application for rebates. Snip snap, as i mentioned. Scout is a part of snip snap with the pricematching application. Then, of course, the target cartwheel application which is specific to target stores. Okay. How many retailers pricematch . Surprisingly, most. Policy that is written on their web site. But its always best to ask. The worst thing that can happen is someone says no. You will find that most of the times, when you ask, the store employees will help find the answer. How do you ask . You can show them on your phone. The best lowest price that you have found. You could also bring the ad in if you have that with you. They will match the lowest price. We have one more graphic up there. Screen. This one here. Project mc2 ultimate lab kit. Yes. This is a big item this christmas. Especially for young girls. And so if you were to get and use the scout application, you could take a picture of the kit. And scout would go ahead and say, well, you may be in walmart right now. But the best price is at toys r us. And in this case, you would have a 30 savings. And then if you went to the walmart employee and asked them to match the price, they would do so. Now, can you combine other deals like coupons and rebates with an instore pricematch . You absolutely can do that. And again, it is just asking for the help of the store employee to match. Then on your own going ahead and submitting a rebate. Wow. That is really some very good advice there. You know, you talk about your favorite web sites. Favorite apps. Do you need to, again. You dont need a printed ad . You can just show the price on your phone . You can try yourself to search for the store policy. Online. Ands if you find it and submit that to. Or show that rather to the clerk right on the phone, they will match the price. And again, if you go to different apps, like snip snap, they will do the same with the policy right there on the phone. Okay. That sounds like a lot of great advice. Good way to save money. Meghan, thank you for coming up. Good luck with the, you know, family of eight there. The brady bunch. Thank you. Okay. All right. Well, that is it for this edition of urban update. For the entire team here. Im byron barnett
