The bostonbased new democracy coalition. The series is being supported by the mass humanities foundation, eastern bank and the boston foundation. Now joinis kevin peterson, founder of the new democracy coalitionment welcome to urban update. Lets start with why you are producing this series. Well, were at a point in this nation where still remains important to talk about race. Eight years after we elect the first africanamerican president. We still have issues racial issues across the country, i call them the revolts. Some cities, around black men being murdered, the response to that. Really indicative of how we have failed to really answer or give answer to the issue of racism in this country. Lots of work to be done. Now, we have seen the number of these types of events before. I guess do you think this is something that just theres a need for this to continue . Well, yeah. It is a continuing need for the conversation. We dont deal wit race if there is a conversation, dialogue, people engaging in conversation. You dont solve that problem if you dont pose deep answers around the issue, and fight and struggle for results. I guess this is not something is resolved in one conversation. No. We talked to folks, people of not. And not one generations conversation. 50 years ago we did get in a very serious conversation around royce in the Civil Rights Movement and there were tremendous policies that emanated from those young people in the 50s and 7 60s. We know now the millenals raising the question of raise and how to respond as an institutna institutional poison. Lets get into now book democracy in black. It is a book that look at his historically as historical fact, and how its impacted our politics. So we have the slave being introduced into the americas in 1619. Ever since then hays has been in our politics. A way that africanamericans, black people, were threequarters o a human being, so from the very beginning of this countrys founding, we struggled with the issue of race and we quite havent settled that issue. So delves into that, and it is a book that is really historical book with information but also begs us a with this. What about boston. You dont have true democracy if you dont address the issues of race. You look at boston in particular, you look at the poorest parts of up to where people of local or black and latino people live. That reflects our attitudes around race. We have not cared enough about black people as im talking about the stiff of boston and we havent cared enough about black people to the extent we have made them equal. So, this conversation i hope will engage bostonians to grapple with the issue. Theres a perception that boston is progressive around issues of race and democracy and boston. Is that the case from your point of view . From my perspective, no. Its not progressive. When you have hyper segregation. Apartheid . The city. You have a certain racist in the city, certain races in the city in a specific area. Black and latino and poor. So boston remains segregated city, whether we like to talk about it or not talk about it. The facts are that boston is segregated along racial lines. Lets remind folks about the event. Its free. Library. In dorchester. Were inviting the public to come out and engage in this dialogue. Thats important for this city and for the mission. Professor wig be signing copies of his book there, democracy in black. Any other thing ted event. A reception before the event so if anyone wants to meet the professor, theyre welcome to arrive at that 5 30, and then the prom prom 6 00 to 8 00 p. M. That evening. And as you note thread will be books available for purchase and sign. The big part of the series, a year. This is being supported mostly by the mass humanities. For a year well have dialogue about race from a political, educational, economic avail your viewers to the other dates. Absolutely. Keep us informed. Well have all the details right here. Bankrolling question two are trying to deceive you. Heres the truth every time a new Charter School opens, it drains money from the existing public schools. Which means real cuts to our kids in arts, technology, ap classes, preschool, bus service and more. Thats why question twos opposed by the massachusetts pta and School Committees all across the state. Remember recess . Well, its changed. Nearly half of all School Districts in the region have either completely eliminateed or reduced time for recess in the last decade. Many void indicators view it as the most problemcratic part of the school due die to staffing, spice, and discipline issues and even though Childhood Obesity has doubled, recess and physical activity is as districts focus almost exclusively on maximizing academic success. Playworks massachusetts is working to flip the system on its head. Entering his 11th year in massachusetts, playworks is leading the recess revolution in new england by helping schools create a place for every kid on the playground. To tell us more about the expurges its mission we have its gay. Thank you for coming in. Thank you. And lets start by discussing why recess has become such a problem for schools. Yes. My role i get to talk to educators and principals and teachers and often times theyre telling me that recess is the most problematic time of the school day. Bullying, fighting. And often times principal says that kids Principals Office and wasting academic time during the school day. So its become what used to be a fun time to now one of the most problematic times of the school day. Into own though theres a need for a physical activity look at the statistics about obesity and all the benefits with team play, and so for schools are finding it just easier to cut it out. Child left behind, that left less time for kid to the be active and play. So kid war not having the same opportunities. What kind of impact has playworks mass helped . Ive been privileged to work with playworks for ten years in this region and have truly seen changes in schools and kid we work with. We are the leading emotional health, and focusing on recess. We want kids to have fun and play games for 20 straight minute sod theyre getting theyre daily dolce of physical activity. Learn how to resolve conflicts. Learn lou to commune kit with one another. And then we want them to go back to close, focused and ready to learn. How do you help schools do this . If theyre worried about all these discipline problems, how do you convince schools to dive recess a really fun and productive time of the school day, the entire school day will shift and the School Climate will improve. So kids who had a negative experience at recess, sitting on the sideline or getting in a fight and disrupting the school day we want to make sure that kid gets in the game, has fun time, productive time. So we do thinks like rock, paper scissors, teach kids to play sock sore everybody is involved at the same time. Bring back tames like tag and quick bag and four square, and 150 kids are playing and having a good time at it. What schools are participating in massachusetts . I know this is a national program. Who are we working with. One of the largest playworks regions across at the country. We work with 75 schools across the state of massachusetts, about 35,000 kids every day. We work with 28 boston schools and schools in new bedford and all these schools are fining that recess can make their cool day a better place for kids and make sure the kids are goetting important social and emotional skills at the same time. Hough do you define a great rhesus. You want to see kids running, playing, and having fun. See them giving highfives and get in every resolving conflict on their own, rock, paper scissors, talking it out. Controlling their emotions so if they get angry they know what to do rather than running off in a storm or using negative energy, and then lastly you want to see kid enjoying themeses and dates participating. Now, how do you work with schools to actually make this a reality . We work through direct Service Programs and put a person at a school and that person runs everyone from reese and leadership then we train and do consultations with schooled to build the capacity of school staff at schools so they can run playworks recess on their own. Now, seems like in general the widespread use of the smart finance, social media, video games, the technology really is a factor in driving kidswa from physical activity . My own kid myself, she often times will want to go to tv versus play outside and thats the reality of what kids experience today. When i was a kid they had small tvs and less programming, Less Television shows. Kids are personning occupy eight hours in front of the television and less opportunity to play outside when the live in a neighborhood that might be kids not coming to school with skills around playing. What does playing outside do for the development of kids . So, playworks has proven a safe recess can reduce bullying in elementary schools, recover valuable learning time 20 hours per class, and get kids physically active. So if you see kids playing a and talk with one another and engage with one another. Deal with emotionness new, positive ways and learn the valuable skills i around physical activity that will make them active. You talk about team play as wellbeing another learning experience for kidding playing outside together. Exactly. Grew up playing sports and learned things about being a skills back to the playground. And very quickly, do you say you have people you run the recess . Do you teach teachers how to do this . Or run it bit yourself . Both. We can serve any school. A lot of school woes serve are high need and we put people at then. Some school wes train them hugh to do it themselves. How can schools get the playworks information in their schools. If you want playworks at your school g fine out how to brick it brig it to your school. Jonathan gay, from playworks massachusetts, and the national program. Thank you for coming and telling us about it. Thats it for this edition of urban update. Urban update. Have a great sunday, everyone. Its a great view from the top. Just ask chris sununu.
