The gatherings were attended almost exclusively by political insiders and rarely in public. Iowa became first in 1972 as the result of a change in rules by the National Democratic party. It all happened quite by accident. The caucuses didnt get a lot of attention until 1976. Thats the year the Republican Party of iowa moved its caucuses to the same date as known southern governor grabbed headlines by coming in second to uncommitted. And the legend of the Iowa Caucuses was born. Throughout the 80s the event grew in stature. But in 1988 iowa was flooded with candidates as both parties had large fields, and there was record breaking caucus attendance.
