Good afterno sent home from the school you see behind me around 9 30 this morning. First responders and volunteers have been working for hours to shore up sandbags around the perimeter of st. Johns school. The schools principal tells us damage to the building is minimal and that most if not all of the water has already been cleared from the building. Another school nearby, parkview primary, also evacuated students. Those students were moved around 1 over to a park pavilion, where parents were able to pick them up. The citys police chief tells us that school sits on a little bit Higher Ground and has also been sandbagged. Flowing down to this school and were trying to make sure that everything is in place here before we start releasing water and we want to make sure that systems are in place in both schools to prevent more flooding when the rain starts to pick up later this afternoon. As for whether or not students will be returning to class here at st. Johns tomorrow, the principal tells us theyll be playing that decision by ear. But puts it the chanc back in class on thursday. The trial of Michael Morgan is temporarily adjourned so a key witness can be brought to court. A jury was chosen yesterday and the trial was supposed to begin today, but the states witness didnt show up. Morgan is accused of setting a fire at a house near 36th and Silver Spring in october. Six children were inside the home. Two died in the burning home. Officials spent several hours trying to locate the witness but were todays my clients day in court. He sat in jail for an entire year. We dont believe the state should be given some sort of advantage to finding witnesses at their own personal convenience that we dont have. While the defense moved to have the case dismissed, the judge ruled that all parties will reconvene on monday and see if the witness can be brought to court and where to go from there. Beverly taylor joins is in the studio with more. Students we talked to today are still in shock. Theyre confused and angry. But, they do have options. Out about this. Its like getting your heart ripped out just for all of the work that ive done to this school. 21 we heard similar sentiments from several students who attended Itt Technical Institute and showed up at the greenfield campus wednesday only to find few answers. Last week, the federal government told itt it did not meet accreditation standards to get federal aid so they said the school could no longer enroll new students who rely on it. Instead of complying the school just shut down. I have to pay 60,000 back to try to improve my education. Thats not right. 44 thats flat out wrong. 46but, there are some options. Other schools, including Herzing University are welcoming itt students who want to transfer and continue working toward their degree. Several students have already come in to discuss options or called to make appointments. We have a number of programs that are similar to the programs that they offer. More specifically in business and information federal Student Loans might be able to get their loans discharged or forgiven if they stop or switch their course of study. Authored by alderman khalif rainey the measure justice. The request was heard in front of the community and Economic Development committee at the city hall this afternoon.
