One lane on each side is closed. They have also put in Weight Restrictions. No vehicles over 10 tons are permitted to cross the Memorial Bridge. They need to educate the drivers and give them time to find new routes. I want to show you where the problem is taking place. I want to go to some video. This is the Center Portion of the bridge. It is the drawbridge portion of the bridge where this corrosion is happening. You may think i have never seen the garbage drawbridge go up. It has not gone up since 1969. This area has been the focus of intense inspections in recent times and has been identified as one of the many bridges that needs an overhaul. There are not funds to do it. Experts say it would cost about 250 million to fix this bridge. Today, congresswoman Eleanor Norton says she will get money for this bridge and others around the nation. That is a drop in the bucket compared to the 11. 5 billion needed to fix our crumbling infrastructure. We spoke with tour bus drivers around d. C. Today. Lets listen to what they had to say. We use Memorial Bridge all the time. That is going to create a big hassle for us if we want to go from d. C. Over to arlington or any of those places. We will have to go 66 or 395, which is going to add more congestion between 66. A pain to get into the arlington cemetery. Sam a lot of frustration with those drivers. The National Park service says they will do a temporary patch job, a bandaid construction project, to fix the worst parts of the bridge. That will not start until july. It is expected to last between six and nine months. While that construction project is going, the lane and Weight Restrictions will remain in place. Sam sweeney, abc 7 news. Anchor thank you. A power pole has to be replaced in arlington after a crash this morning. A car crashed into the pole on irving street. The car overturned trapping the driver.
