Program, i will be joined by the Hampden CountyRepublican Party to talk about the primary, especially what to do about the seeming dominance of donald trump. But, we begin locally with the republican primary for the ohio house of representatives seat in district 27. Which covers hyde park, mount lookout, mt. Washington, and inside the city of cincinnati as well as Anderson Township, indian hill, tara , outside the city. Tom, a resident of matt lookup is a republican incumbent in this race. He served for tomas jurco and the ohio house between 2000 and 2008 when he was term limited out. He was one of the founders of coast, the coalition opposed to additional taxing and spending. He won the seat back two years go in 2014, defeating peter solberg. Heidi hubert, a resident of Anderson Township is challenging brinkman this year for the republican nomination. She has been active as a 20 years, especially in the last 10, focusing on a variety of conservative causes, including efforts to overturn common core, founding of violence against common core, and other issues. Welcome to newsmakers. And welcome back in your particular pace. Heidi, lets begin with you. Okay. Tom has long time been seen as a sort of one of the leaders of the local conservative wing of the Republican Party. I mentioned coast before. You actively supported him two years ago. Him . Is it a specific thing he has done or not done, or suggest that you feel the party has shifted and left him behind . Woman it is probably a combination of those two things. I would say that we have moved past what we stood for two what have you accomplished. And, i would quite honestly say at this point ive accomplished more being outside of columbus in terms of affecting what is going on inside of columbus than our representatives have. My focus has been common core. The only reason i was able to understand what it was is because i picked up my principles and policy. And, i could see the darkness that was common core and what it would do to finally finish off what local control we had. When you say you have been more effective being on the outside, why you want to be on the inside . I want to be on the inside because now i know how it works. You cannot leave your constituents and or those who are willing to walk beside you behind. The idea, what we have been able to form across the country and the state of ohio in particular with regard to this issue has been able to educate people on not just what common core is, but what this is that is happening to us as a country in a state. And, that is regulations and mandates that are feeding this behemoth of a budget we have in columbus. They are nibbling around the is getting done. Tom, you have been pretty outspoken about the state budget. You voted to and common core. Hb seven. What do you say to heidi who, have you lost touch with the constituency . Well, i appreciate everything heidi said. I think advocates outside the elected office can be very effective on one specific issue. The problem is when you get into office, you have to deal with the whole plethora of issues that the local folks may not even understand. Our first issue last year when i returned was algae blooms in lake erie. We spent two months going over all the reiterations of how do we stop this from happening, who will take the brunt of the those are things that did not mean much to folks down along the ohio river. This year, we did have an algae bloom. Maybe it will coming up. But there are a lot of issues you get stuck in because you have to do that as part of the job. And you also dont have to go to Great Schools and community meetings, heroin crisis, a lot of other stuff gifted you with. So some of the core things that may have brought you there, you still have to bring attention to them but theyre not on everyones agenda. As your first run of state rep, you were sort of thing as being a voice of no, and voting against the Republican Leadership quite frankly. But, have you matured . Have you changed . I am not sure what the right term is. Are you treating your second term differently than your first . I refer to it as brinkman 2. 0 as opposed to 1. 0. There is some way to get some by the and of my first go around, i have been a chairman of the committee, may be looking down the road to some obstacles. And im still very adamantly prolife, second amendment. Right to work, things that still rankle a lot of folks. But, the way to get them done by observing around the country best practices may require standing at Fountain Square and calling the governor a layer, which i once did. So i have been a notice, by the way. Well, i know we did. Heidi, is at the problem . It is 2. 0 and what tom sees his maturity, you see is given a . No. Quite honestly, based on his record, he referred to house bill seven which was the production bill. I offered the bill. It was not that columbus voted unanimously on the board because they had an epiphany. They did it because they were afraid and not to. That takes effective leadership. Tom was not in the district talking about house bill seven. He went with the flow. He has only been in Committee Assignments 30 percent of the time, even for the first year of his term. That is where effective legislation happens and you can educate not only your colleagues, but also educate those were testifying as far as a better approach. Something that can truly be effective and get through the chambers and take a piece out of whatever the problem is. So they get all styled up with have a lot of things on my plate. His attendance record doesnt indicate that he was concerned about addressing those things in the committee way. What was your to this record . Never missed a vote on the house floor to a bill or an amendment to the bill. But this is in reference to committee work. Again, 2. 0, Committee Rooms are like the program of the brothel with the Committee Chairman playing the piano. All the deals are cut at other places. I can see that. Great job. She was up in the speakers office, no question about, she legislatures. Why do i, with Political Capital as we all have, waste any on that . It will get done. We need it for down the road on other issues. So, i think that is the way i viewed it. It would get done. She did a great job, so lets seek it down. Do you see heidi is a one issue candidate . No. She is certainly not been a one issue candidate on this election. It is not just common corporate she has spoken about other issues and is added some valuable commentary about this election. I think heidi running has made me a better candidate, and hopefully a better legislator core, we have talked a little bit about that. Will it be maybe the next thing that you would really wanted to accomplish if you ended up being a republican candidate and one in november . Got into the house of representatives . Heidi, what is it you would really want to work on next . From a 30,000 foot view, i believe this stranglehold that the mandate from the sea, this federal overlord that we have is what creates many of the problems we have at the state level. And, the from the private sector work i do, i am a finance professional with a small consulting business as well as working in a private academy. And what i have found on both sides, and education as well as the private sector, what is strangling us are the cares we took from dc, whether it is through the obamacare mandates, the legislation, strictly, the epa. I have dealt with that in the private sector and what it is done to my clients from a financial perspective of sustainability. The Medicaid Expansion the governor casey, a republican has backed, so much in the teeth of the legislature. If you were in, what would be your position . Well, what i have found, again, to make it more effective to addressing, lets say, the education policy what about medicaid . Well, i am saying is to go back and find the devil in the details. Legislation that exist and how you can leverage it. That is what we did with house bill seven and house bill 212. We went back. I read through pages and pages and pages of policy to find out how i could leverage that begins what we wanted the outcome to be. So, again, taking the same principles and applying them to any policy that youre digging through. I believe i have that strength. Tom, what about medicaid for you . You know the reality out there. What is the situation . Well, i voted against the obamacare expansion. There are a lot of promises of when it will drop off. It is the roles of people who governor predicted. It will be a precrisis. Doesnt that tell us something about the need . It is pulled back, doesnt it then fall back onto local hospitals, local agencies, to fill the need . Well, it may. Remember, when it came in, none of the hospitals that we do not want the levy money because we know obamacare will pay us. They always want other peoples money. Certainly, those are the challenges that come down the pike. The problem is just getting with folks and try to get them to change something. Folks are addicted to it. We tried to stop toenail cutting by medicaid, a 10 million program. Since man from the state, for from the state taxpayers. You wouldve thought we would in the world with all the i can i get my colleagues to push against it. So, those are the shiny things coming out of dc that are hard to fight against. Let me raise one more issue, and this will probably be it for time. Right to work. Ohio is now almost surrounded by other states have gone right to work. Where are you on that, and how important is it for you . Well, i mentioned the other evening that i believe the right to work as a shiny coin. Not the answer to all prayers for the all houck economy. Tom mentioned about they want the money, and that is going on in our schools and local governments as well. He has made the comment that they will take anything as long as there is money behind it. I do not believe that is true in our schools or local communities with their firefighters and police officers. They are reacting to the so, theyre always behind people. Yes, it does appear they will take money for anything, but that is not the case. As far as the right to work, that is paycheck production. That is affecting the local taxpayer and the state taxpayer. We should not be painted mister public union dues. That is restart with right to work. Right to work, i introduced a bill for private sector right work. We are almost ready. Three out of five states around us. Governor bevan said he will sign it if he got to his desk. It is something we need to move on. Certainly we have president ial politics we have to take into consideration because the governor is running for that. I dont know if he wants to touch that route. But, theres no simpler way to change our economy the right to work. It is no cost and it will help overnight. I want to make sure people know how to learn more about both of you. Check out their websites, koh brinkman. Com or heidi huber. Org. Thank you very much for being here this morning. After the break, along with contest comes to. Donald trump is a phony. A fraud the bullying and greed and showing off, the misogyny, the absurd thirdgrade theatrics. The stable, thoughtful person we need is leader. He is playing the people as suckers, getting a free ride for the white house, and all we get is a lousy had. With super tuesday over and donald trump the clear leader in the republican race for nomination, a sort of internal panic instead into the Republican Party. Party leaders, kurt Office Leaders and even the past two president ial nominees have become increasingly vocal about criticizing trump. Suddenly, it seems that all comes down to florida and ohio on march 15. Welcome back. From the historical perspective, the underlying thing going on in 2016 election cycle may be a historic shift in the Political Party system. Americans have known two major party names, democrat and republican, since the 1850s. But, over 175 years, the driving principles and composition of each party have shifted multiple times, systems reflecting the Dynamic Medical culture of the nation. Just two examples, as the party of lincoln, almost all africanamericans were republicans until the grinding reality of the Great Depression and new deal policy prompted them to move in moss to the democratic artie. Until the 1960s, so essays were dominated by democrats until Richard Nixon made it major relation. Is this a logical movement of the Tea Party Movement, and is a Strong Enough to cause another basic realignment . Or, will this simply turn out to be an isolated blimp with no Lasting Impact on the systems . There are just nine days until the primaries take place, and if trumpet sweeps both, florida and ohio, he wouldve vanquished the two of his three remaining rivals and the race will essentially be over. But, if marco rubio can hold ohio, the possibility of a convention that actually means something becomes a reality. I am joined this morning for the local perspective by alex from the chair of the Hamilton CountyRepublican Party and chip gerhart, a former vice chair and also just acted with the party locally and running around doing all kinds of things to ashley. Chip, you actually were up in New Hampshire for a while, right . I was. For john kasich. Is that your way of he is my guy. It was a great experience, and it was good to be back in real tell politics, many people in the great state of New Hampshire, talking to them about the responsibility. As the first primary in the country, and their interest in the president ial race. And, case the cuisine is doing really well there, but he lost . Well, i think you defied expectations of one. Okay. Something that as you pointed out, none of us have experienced in our political lifetime. But, john kasich was very well received in New Hampshire and did very well. Alex has a local party taken a position in the president ial election . No. Our party has stayed out of contested primaries, including local ones with the exception of judge pat fisher who we endorsed this year. The exception proves the rule, but we have not endorsed them. Our party, frankly, is like the rest of the country, fairly divided on this topic. I was meeting with a trump supporter, and we still have a lot of basic support in the party. The ted cruz faction of the party is really built around the Tea Party Movement here in southwest ohio. It is interesting. So, how do you see i dont know how much you can talk, but you are pretty chair. Yes. This guy doesnt have an official position, so how do so what mitt romney said. Well, i am not the hysteric, frankly, is overblown. This is a contested primary, yes. Yes is some caustic and frankly some stupid things. But, at the and of the day he is bring a lot of people into the process. I think if he continues on the trajectory is on any wednesdays primary states, we will have a nominee relatively early, and all this other chatter will go by the wayside. It you are right, next couple weeks will set a tone for that. Im not worried about the future of the party. We dominate the gubernatorial races across the country. We dominate statehouses representatives, we control the senate and house of representatives. Every state office in ohio. The party is bigger than one candidate. I appreciate the movement, but there are a lot of nervous republicans on the ballot, beginning with rob portman who is being very careful and saying not where he stands. There are a lot of people who are worried the trump is not just a little caustic, they could really be a problem for people down to get. Well, i have heard that, too. What is interesting to me is that he has defied all conventional wisdom to date. Six months ago, nobody thought he would be where he is now. And as alex pointed out, theres a great deal of Energy Around the republican primary, which is a good thing for all of us. I agree with alex that the party will survive, and you need someone to come in and cause people to take a look at who we are and what we are and what we stand for. And, potentially to recalibrate. But, i do not know if he helps at the top of the ticket or curse at this point. And i do not know that any traditional pundit can estimate that right now. I mean, there is a lot of Energy Around this, and it may continue. So, there were those, say a about stopping trump, saying we have to coalesce around a single alternative, whoever that different people have different alternatives they wanted everyone to coalesce around. For those who oppose trump ending up on the other and, is that the smartest thing . Or, is the smartest thing keeping the other guys in the race . Well, the conventional wisdom on that is constantly shifting. Every time the other candidates get out, trump does better. So the idea that ahead to head would ultimately be good for the people opposing donald trump, it is not so automatic anymore. I think in ohio, which is now critical, headtohead case of versus trump, he was a pretty easily. The rest of the way though, you heard mitt romney who said vote for anybody but him to bring his numbers down. I think a lot of people are quietly praying for a broker to we have never seen one, not in our lifetimes. Im a historian and have read about them, but we have not seen one. Honestly, youve been to conventions, both of you. Can you imagine a truly competitive broker to question. I will answer. It is funny that we talked about it on the way up here to visit with you, ill probably for the good of the party, it is not ideal to have a big national fight rather than a coronation infomercial, which is what most of these are not to be. But from a political junkie perspective, we thought it might be pretty interesting to be a part of it. Again, i think from the trajectory, or front runner is doing well. He will have a important job to do, but it is too early to declare messing on the. I would love a broker to mention and to watch it, just as a political junkie and it would be far more interesting. Those are pretty boring to watch on tv, and probably even to be there, except that you get to network with people. Yes, we got to meet clint eastwood, and that was a treat. Was it . Sure was. [laughter] [indiscernable] in person, we had a good time. Well, as long she had a good time. Realistically, nine days from now, for people in the race in ohio, what will happen . Will john kasich when in ohio . I will ask a john kasich support. I think he wins. In a fourway race . A fourway race, i think he wins. And im not afraid to say. Im predicting a kasich when in ohio. He is popular here, especially across the state. He won 88 counties just one year ago. What does that mean in terms of the way the delegates are split in ohio . It will still be is a proportion . So, if he wins, he gets all that . Yes, right. What about florida . What is happening there . Well, i question i just morning. Trump is a has significantly by florida. Marco rubio and his supporters will have real work to do. Portage is another take all state. Again, is a big lead. He has lost some states here and here, but when he has, he is managed to maintain . You think humans afford it . Yes, i do. What about michigan . From michigan. Right. Right now. Yes, people from my office are heading up there tomorrow to work case of. Yes, i know. I think trump probably wins michigan as well. I think the k 16, as they have done everywhere, working hard michigan at all. Just continuing the momentum, continuing the adult in the room substantive candidate, and he is the only one that is speaking specifics and it not engaging in the did two did not, nuhhuhconversation. Was the only one he said ahead of time taking trump on directly does not do. He does not get into that. Is that the right strategy . Well, yes. I mean, does it work . Well, obviously he is not pushing trump in multiple states. But, i think it ultimately works. You need to show yourself as a substantive person who understands the myriad of details. Is making the party proud. I will say that. Im proud of what he said. I am out of time. An interesting next and days. Thank you for making as a part of your sunday. Join us next week for a final look in preparation for the march 15 primary. Up next, on u. S. Bank business watch presented by the the bridge.
