off of a vehicle yesterday morning about 9:00 a.m. on two notch road. the suspect tried to steal the tires off a used car. the owner saw the suspect and got this clear picture. somebody knows who this man is. if you are that person call 1- 888-crime-sc. lexington county police need your help finding a person involved in stealing from aimateerous store -- from a mattress store. someone stole a computer. authorities say the suspect was scene on surveillance video video located near the mattress man. if you have any information on who this is you are asked to call crime stoppers at 1-888- our way and that front has been bringing some clouds and precipitation to the area as well. right now, though, we are under mostly cloudy skies in the area. and we have had a little bit of rain. one batch of rain came through, another batch is going to be coming through. you can see on the ratar the showers moved to -- radar, the showers moved off to the east. we have a little bit of rain left and then for the most part we will be seeing just dry conditions for the rest of the night but it has cooled us off. knoxville they are at 42 degrees. columbia right now our temperature is 47 degrees. we have mostly cloudy skies. winds at 6 miles per hour producing a wind chill of 44. wind chill will be a problem for us the next few days. tonight still breezy. 33 degrees for a low. tomorrow 45 and windy conditions. now let's take a look at the traffic around the area this afternoon. looking at an over view right now of the area. we will go up to the northwest side of town. currently it is starting to slow down. wasn't too mad a few minutes -- bad a few minutes ago through the malfunction junction area. southeast side of town, not too bad traffic wise. slow down off i-20 on to clemson road and there are also slow spots on killion road. downtown to clemson road will take you about 14 minute. i will have the seven-day forecast coming up. >> thank you. president obama is asking congress for more than $1.8 billion in emergency funding to help fight the zika virus. the money used would be to expand mosquito control programs and speed up the development of a vaccine and develop tests and improve pregnant women getting exposed. zika virus is spread by mosquitos. most people who catch it experience mild or no symptoms but there are suspicions the fetus of a pregnant women may be at risk for a rare birth defect that causes brain damage and a small head. in north carolina a man is dead after running in the krispy kreme race. during the race participates eat 12 donuts before or while they run. eaten by the man who died. the 58-year-old man started having chest pains and was pronounced dead at the hospital. krispy kreme says it has no affiliation with the race for charity. (803)647-0299. . now, the midlands most accurate forecast with chief meteorologist jim gandy. >> here is a time line over the last three years. the first batch of rain came through this afternoon. that is moving to the east. we have a second line right here and that will be coming through columbia area in the next couple hours and once that is through here we are done with the rain. but the front is back to the west, moving low the atlanta area. this evening it moves through our area. we have mostly cloudy skies out there and we are likely to see that. look at the cloud cover here. from south carolina all the way down to the gulf coast region, into the mississippi river valley. because of this storm over the great lakes region, moving to the east and we have a lot of cold air that is poised to move into the south east over the next couple days and because of this storm system we will see windy conditions through in the meantime the rain came through has dropped our temperatures. in fact we got up to 61 degrees here in columbia. right now 47. 46 degrees in sumpter. 48 degrees in orangeburg. warmed up to 53 in augusta. but again the front is over in georgia. it will be cooling off tonight. we expect skies to become partly cloudy tonight. we will see clearing taking place. tomorrow we will see the clouds building again in the afternoon. we will start out sunny with mostly cloudy skies in the afternoon. wednesday, though, we should see mostly sunny skies. here is our forecast. for the area, we are expecting tonight temperatures to be kept up by the winds. 29 degrees in newberry. 32 lexington. 33 columbia. 34 sumter and orangeburg. tomorrowwell be colder. with theind -- tomorrow it will be colder. with the wind it will feel colder. 45 columbia and sumpter. 47 manning. looking ahead. it will be chilly. sunny on wednesday, windy, 45 degrees. coldest morning will be thursday morning with a low temperature of 23. we will warm up to 47. temperatures don't moderate that much. 50 on friday and then a cold front saturday morning. it will be windy and 48 degrees. by sunday morning we are expecting a low of 24. with a high of 43 degrees. and once we get to monday right now it looks like it will be partly cloudy, 50 degrees. it will be a bit cold for the next week. >> all right. thank you. the virginia teenager who was killed last week was layed to rest tonight. as the family and community mourning the loss of the 13- year-old they are also searching for answers. friends suspect a predator social media. an 18-year-old man she planned to meet before she disappeared. a number of charges have been victims online. we want to make sure you stay safe and so do your kids. so the richland county sheriff's department is here today to talk to us exactly about these apps, what we should be looking for on the phone and, you know, it seems like, you know, i remember having these discussions years ago about explaining to parents how facebook works and now there is more, isn't a chat, kick. as they get more advanced it is harder to trace them. explain that. >> it is. teenagers are inventive. they will come up with a app for anything. flirting. dating. apps to keep things away from their parents, where things disappear. so it is really important that parents get educated. get online as much as possible and educate yourself on the current teens. >> what are the easiest things, my mom is not techrespondry, what are the things parent can do to make sure they know what their children are doing online. >> get on google, look into current trends and keep your spy wear and software updated. anything to help you educate yourself on what your teens are doing. no reason they should have computers at night time, cell phones. things like that. set boundaries. talk to them. take the devices at night time and search on what they have been doing. >> i know parents, that is how they let their kids go to bed. you would completely recommend against that. >> aabsolutely -- absolutely. teens up late at night, it is important to take the devices. set boundaries on time limits. take them away at night time. let them go to sleep. you can use that time and search on what they have been doing. >> the new apps. kick, snap chat. tinder. they are a way to meet people online. why are these different and harder to trace? >> they are tough because again if you are not educated on the current trends, thew use the technology -- how to use the technology, you are taking a step behind. that is a step you don't want to be. get familiar with what is going on. they don't know who is on the other end of the line. they frust it is a cute boy or girl. it is probably not. probably a sexual predator. >> what do you tell kids,ion you are active -- i know you are active in the community, what should you tell your teenager about apps like this? >> don't trust anything on the other side of that screen. as soon as you post something, picture, chat, anything like that, it is out there for the world to grab. don't trust what anybody is telling you on the other side of the device. it is probably not true. they will lie about their age, who they are, they will send your pictures of somebody who is not themselves. >> how often do you guys at the sheriff's department that see crimes that start with people online? [ talking at the same time ] >> reporter: this is going to be such a great game. >> all right. thank you so much. well, the midland housing trust fund got $10,000 from wells fargo for an affordable housing program. their work is focusing on giving developers tools to opportunities like at the vimmage at -- village at river's edge. so far they invested $640,000 and financed 198 units. >> for us, the bottom line is, decreasing the number of people who are what we call housing cost burdened. who spend 30% of their income on housing costs. >> the midlands housing trust fund hopes to have a resource tool kit by end of the year. a group is investing to rebuild and repair homes damaged by the floods. the money will be distributed to non-profits and volunteer organizations. grant recipients will provide resources for low to moderate effected by the flood or storm damage. grant could be arrested on the united way website. one non-profit that serves south carolina parents for children with essential needs may have to close their doors come july. they have been helping other parents for 25 years but they recently lost the parent training and assistance center from the department of education. the grant helped them provide information and assistance to parents with kids with disabilities. they serve between 6 and 7,000 families every year. >> we love having the opportunity do it and to do it for free. you we are faced with having to charge for training. which we never had to do in the past. we want to continue oo pride it free. >> tonight on news 19 at 7:00 p.m. we will introdos you to one -- introduce you to one parent and how you can make sure they continue to do good work in the state. . now, the midlands most accurate forecast with chief meteorologist jim gandy. >> we are continuing to watch a line of showers that has been moving through sumpter county, about to move out of the city. moving to the east. we have another line of showers. this is weak and appears to be weakening. it is near newberry, through saluta county, it is moving east. there is still a chance that we might see a shower in the columbia area. but currently it is mostly cloudy skies. 47 degrees. winds from the southwest at 6 miles per hour. that is producing a wind chill of 44. and tonight it will stay breezy. we will see a few clouds at cloudy, 33 degrees. with the winds it will feel colder. tomorrow windy with winds out of the west gusting up to 30 miles per hour. we will see clouds in the afternoon but sunshine in the morning. high temperature just 45 degrees. and looking ahead it will be windy on wednesday with a high temperature of 45 degrees. by thursday down to 23 for a low with a high of 47. then we will moderate to 50 on friday but more cold air for the weekend. on saturday we will see a high temperature of 48 degrees and again it will be windy. now let's look that traffic once again across the area. an over view here. this is a look at the city. some of the slowest areas on the northwest side of town. northeast side of town things are in good shape. two notch road a slow down. on the southwest side of town northwest side of town a slow down. lexington highway, a problem towards i-20. we are seeing a slow down through the malfunction junction area and westbound lanes of i-20 from malfunction junction to highway 6. if you are going from downtown to harvardson boulevard it will take 13 minutes. it is improving downtown to lexington on 378. now it is -- should only take 19 minutes. ladies, back to you. >> thank you very much. a unique day today at the south carolina state museum. the museum held a field day for students and students with families who have special needs. the goal was to provide a safe understanding environment and visitors enjoyed a smaller crowd and quiet areas. lights and sounds were reduced in some spots of the museum and they provided extra staff at many exhibits. event today was a big success. >> we have had such wonderful families and kids come in. they haven't been able to come in and do this before so they are really excited. we had friends and little friends come in. they said we have never been able to come because we are just -- we have a hard time with the things going on. with the modifications, their families and parents. >> visitors were able to take part in a free art class with south carolina autism volunteers. it is not too late to donate to the cinderella project that provides used dresses for high school girls to wear on prom night. you can make a donation at a dozen locations including at news 19 studios. the deadline is february 24. it is approaching in columbia. and march 9 in orangeburg county. locations on our website, just go a www.wltx.com.
