Tracie strahan has the story on positively black. Sure, your kid was splashes in the pool this summer, but the Usa Swimming Foundation finds that nearly 70 of africanamerican children dont know how to swim. Now, fearing for the safety of little ones, the group has teamed up with a well known swimmer who has broken barriers in the swimming world and made it the goal to teach 800,000 kids to not just swim but make a splash in the pool nationwide this year. Were joined by somebody ive been trying to interview for years now. Colin jones, twotime olympic Gold Medalist and a spokesman for the Usa Swimming Foundation. Youre a new yorker a bronx guy. You have trusted me with the goods today. This is not even a humble brag. This is a big brag. Had to bring it in. When is this from . London. Thats part one of the relays that we swam. We brought home gold. Nobody ever dropped it before, right . No. I dont want to be the first. Lets talk about how you got started as a bronx guy. How did you get first in the pool . I had humble beginnings. At the age of five i almost drowned. A lot of people i believe in irony. A lot of people dont know that about me. My parents brought me to an amusement park, we went down this one ride, i ended up flipping upside down. I was completely supervised. Thats the biggest piece, had lifeguards there, parents there. The proper supervision was there. Proper supervision, and i was still able to flip upside down and be under water. We see that in 30 seconds a child can pull away. They pulled me out, resuscitated me and the first words out of my mouth are which ride are we getting on next. Youre trying to teach how many kids to swim . 800,000 . Thats this year. We had to set the bar high. The make a Splash Initiative has been going on since 2008. Usa Swimming Foundation approached me, they showed me drowning statistics. You get gold, how is swimming going . Changes completely. I think i know the answer to this. I admitted to you i dont know how to swim. I heard. I hate to tell you of people this, but what from some reasons you hear from africanamericans, and i hear it, too, that dont know how to swim. Yeah. So, ive been working with the initiative for about five, six years, in 2010 university of memphis put out a study. There were three major factors. Number one overarching is fear. Im not saying you have to wear speed speedos. Thats for you. Yeah, thats for me. Thats a big issue, and then parental backing. When parents dont know thousand swim, a lot of times they dont get children into swimming. Thats a generational thing we need to break. Fear is the number one overarching. I understand. I almost drowned. I definitely identify with that. We talked about you being the novelty because even in 2015 theres still not a lot of black swimmers we see competing. Were coming around. Will we see you again in rio. Im traping. Ing training. Training for 2016. This month they put out the national people. Im part of the national people. Congratulations. Yeah. Im happy. This is called negro land memoir. Margo jefferson is looking back on her life and her familys life. Her family was a wealthy upper class black family which is not very much focused on in the history of africanamericans in this country. Anher father was a doctor. She grew up in chicago. Her mother was a socialite. Negroland is her sense of this mythic place, where she loves and horrible word but it shows the pressures on her and her family to be better than, different than other black people, to be exemplars and feel, as she does in this book, through the culture of White America and black america. The book is so brilliant on Race Relations and the internal pressures she feels as a young africanamerican woman and as a critic coming to new york. But theres a great chapter, brief chapter in which she and her family are watching television in the 50s. You hear her mother and father, what they think about lena horne, and sammy davis jr. Who according to her mother, and was white people. It was a great book. Riveting. I thought it was elegant shrapnel because it keeps exploding on you. Fin our second book. This is a great novel. Thomas mallon writing about the Reagan Administration in finale. It is not my dna to be drawn to reagan as a sympathetic character. But this made you understand how he worke in his presidency. It is set in 1986 around the gorbachev summit in icelan you get to understand how politics works, what goes on in his mind, which is very opaque to many people, including nancy reagan. Theres so many wonderful characters, so much great conversation, you believe as if this is happening, even though most of it is fictional. They interact with great fictional characters, too, who bring richa rd nixon into the picture. Thomas mallon is a wonderful novelist. Ter i read this i read about so please read about finale even if you are not wanting to read about reagan. Many say its hard to get into him, into what hes like. Sweet caress is the third.
