If you are looking for good titles to fill out your Summer Reading list, we have you covered. Kerry barrett sat down with bill gold phone for bills books. The heat, hunker down with a good bunk, bill has some great reads. Lets start with the return. An amazing book. By hisham matar. He is a novelist who wrote two books that i talked about, the anatomy of disappearance and his first novel, in the country of men. He grew up around the world. This is about his return to libya after gadhafis fall. Its a nonfiction book. Its the story of him and his family and his father who was a an antigovernment not exactly a dissident but the enemy of the gadhafi government. And he was kidnapped in 1990 when the author, matar, was 19 and living in this is the story of his return to libya, the search for his father. A beautiful book. I cant tell you how potent it is as a story of fathers and sons, and as a trilogy, it works to beautifully with his novels. You could read all three of them in one long sitting in front of the air conditioner. The second one is the dream this is all around the Space Program in the 70s and into the 80s. So you get apollo astronauts, people who didnt quite get to be apollo astronauts. You get family stories, each one is different about the faded dreams, fraying families. Patrick ryan who also writes young adult novels has a great sense of the sights and sounds of the past. You feel immersed in these family lives in these homes, in these rooms where radios are playing the music that you might remember from your own youth. Theres always something heartbreaking in the way in which families are coming together or not coming together. Such a great protagonist in each story. Sounds fantastic. Thirdly we have sarong party lulien tan. Its sort of like sex and the city in singapore. Its a window into another culture, sarong party girls, young women in singapore who want to marry white men. That is the status symbol. That and having their babies with white men who would then be chanel babies. Its funny on one hand about what these women are like in these nightclubs looking for men, but theres also into Singapore Society that and to one strata of Singapore Society. These women are also fighting with their mothers and grandmothers for the traditions of singapore. Also told in singlish, a little bit english and spanglish. Yes. English. Just a delight to read. Finally we have white trash. The 400yearold untold story of class in america. This is by Nancy Isenberg. This reflects on the divisions people see in the election today, class, race. And what Nancy Isenberg has done is look at 400 broad as elvis presley, trailer parks, and then the desegregation of the high school in little rock. She does that through all the decades of American History taking a broad, leaping view from pop culture into politics. Its just so eyeopening and wonderful to read and has a brilliant title using its title to sort of get its message across. Thats something that people really understand about class founding of america. Even though we talk about equality for all, that Class Divisions have always been present in american life. Just such a good book. Bill, thank you very much. My pleasure. If you have a question for bill, email him at billsbooks nbcuni. Com. You can find a list of his recommendations on our website, nbcnewyork. Com books. Still ahead on today in new york, new information about an attack on a woman on do to the victim inside a church gym.
