A fire ripped through a church in new jersey days before the most important holiday on the christian calendar. Now others are reaching out to offer the church a temporary home in time for easter mass. Jennifer lahmers is live in inglewood with the outpouring of support. People of all faiths, synagogues, churches, theyve opened their doors to the parishioners here at First Presbyterian because they dont have anywhere to go for easter. Easter is four days away. While fire investigators try to figure out how the fire started, the pastor says the support has been tremendous. It breaks my heart, absolutely breaks my heart. Reporter brian forbes grew up in this church, the First Presbyterian church of inglewood. I was baptized in this church. I was raised in this church. We attended every week during that period, attended Church School here. Reporter today all he could the place of worship hes come to know his whole life now gutted floor to ceiling by a massive fire. It happened last night before 8 00. Orange flames lighting up the windows, smoke billowing to the top of the steeple. Just two hours later, a church that stood here for 150 years was destroyed. Well stay above that for the next couple of days. Areawide, were sitting in the 60s and 70s. Were at 61 towards islip. Cooler in montauk where the temperature is at 50 due to an onshore flow. 71 in newark. It feels good in poughkeepsie where the temperature is at 67 nice degrees. These numbers are running about 10 to 15 degrees warmer than they were last night. To our north, were seeing cooler temperatures. Towards albany and boston, theres readings in the 40s. You can see a defining line where we have milder readings to the south of the front and colder to the north. The front is going to affect areas of the Hudson Valley over the next couple of days. Well see more clouds in the that could keep temperatures down just a little bit, especially tomorrow and an east wind will keep coastal sections cooler. A look at the front shows we have a couple of showers lining along it. The weather should stay to the north. If anything, well see clouds rolling in from the north and well have clearer skies to the south. Our next real main focus is on this area of low pressure located in the middle section of the nation. This will be making its way towards our area. It will pass through as a cold front thursday through the day on friday. With it, we will see our next chance of precipitation. With temperatures being so mild and well above the freezing mark, the precip will be in the form of rain and not show. Thats what you can expect by then. Before that happens, we have a nice mild surge of air coming in from the south where temperatures are in the 70s for tomorrow. 83 in miami. Well be in the 60s here in new york city, but you can see the colder air is just edging its way southward courtesy of that front sitting to the north. As it makes its way south, well see more cloud cover towards the Hudson Valley for your afternoon. Here it plays out on the you can see to the north, well wake up with a mix of sun and clouds. That will be the trend tomorrow with more clouds to the north and sun to the south. The rain stays off to the canadian border. On thursday night into friday, things will be changing. The cold front will make its way in from the west. Expect scattered showers activity late thursday night. It will last through the day on friday. Thats when you want the umbrella handy. Good news. That will be clearing out of here in time for the weekend. We expect dry weather by then. It will be dry tonight and relatively nice with lows close to what should be our normal highs, like in new york city. Then tomorrow, a mix of sun and clouds, slightly cooler than today. People over profit. People over profit. Reporter chelsea residents with city and state officials demonstrated outside the offices of landlord pan am equities in midtown. They say pan am is jacking up the rent of the associated supermarket on west 14th street, which is forcing the only affordable Grocery Store in the neighborhood, to close. If the landlord wants a profit, let him get a civilized profit, not 500 percent. I dont have anywhere to go i can go to one of the specialty stores, and it will cost me three times the amount to buy things like milk and bread. Reporter the city might be able to offer tax incentives to the landlord to keep the Grocery Store open. Weve reached out to them. Basically they told us theyre not interested. They raised the rent 10 fold. Reporter pan am did not return my calls and a request for a comment. All the affordable supermarkets are closing all over the city. Many new yorkers have voiced concern about what they see is a growing trend of traditional Grocery Stores being replaced by trendier chains, like whole foods, trader joes and fairway or to make way for a new luxury apartment building. The reality is if you look at the whole universe of supermarkets, the numbers have increased. Over two years, we have 8 more than we used to reporter however the supermarkets are higher end. Despite that, he says families can still afford to shop at the upscale grocers if theyre smart about it. Youre going to get better quality food from whole foods than you might get from the low end supermarket that it replaced. The bad news is youre going to have to clip some coupons and really watch your pennies to make your food budget work. Reporter thats a hard sell to many new yorkers. Theres so much more available of organic product than even 10 years ago. Thats really helped a lot with pricing. Whole foods, we have really worked a lot with pricing and really have been more competitive. Theres so much more available now. The price has come down to 10 years ago. Alison even over the past couple of years, youve been able to offer more affordable pricing than you could a year, year and a half ago. In addition to that, theres so much more product out there. So many more people are developing new products. Theres so many more farmers that have moved to organic. The availability of product is you can totally shop a whole foods store and really price well. Our 365 line is a great line. Its our value line. Its the cheapest in the category. We developed that line with the understanding that we wanted to appeal to all of our shoppers in all of our neighborhoods. Alison i know people sometimes have this perception that small mom and pop shops are local and that Bigger Stores or bigger chains are not. I know you said local is very important and is a key part of whole foods. Can you talk to me about that . Its so important to us. We cultivate so many local producers, especially in the northeast region. Theres so many great producers in brooklyn and jersey and connecticut and farmers. We have a great local forager. Ellie. Alison shes awesome. She works with the producers and farmers and really helps cultivate them from being into one store to being in multiple stores and grow their business. Its a beautiful part of our segment of our business and our stores and we try to celebrate it. We highlight it in our stores. We put pictures up of the different producers. They had a relationship for that long. Guy, a fun guy. He wasnt the standard blow dry, bald guy, a character, spoke the street lingo. Alison you can see why they were such good friends. Russ yogi was really quiet. But this guy was outgoing. Interesting thing about yogi to me i can pinch myself. I used to visit yogi every weekend until he passed away. One weekend, i think in august, i was there with dave caplan and yogi. Dave pulled out a cell phone because he wanted a phone conversation with joe. This was close to the end for yogi. And all of a sudden, you could see the face light up, like a light bulb. These are two guys, 90 years old, or joe was 89 at the time, and when i say light up like a like little boys. With joe passing today, it was a sad day personally for me, also because it brought back a lot of memories of yogi. Listen, two guys, 90, best friends, ill sign up for that right now, my dear.
