In Seminole County a man is going to be in court today after police say his sixyearold niece shot and killed herself with his gun, Eric Williams was taking care of aleatha burke and she got ahold of the gun and shot herself. Williams is a convicted felon and is not supposed to have a gun. Hes now facing several charges including child neglect. In orlando, were hearing from the young boy who rescued his 8yearold friend from a canal. It happened on tuesday, close to riverside elementary. Investigators say that she was walking on a pipe across the canal, and he fell 10 feet into the water. 8yearold Malachi Jenkins jumped in to save him. I twisted him around. I grabbed his hand and brought him to shore. I asked his brother to help me, help me pull him up. Him there, to be a help. Now franklin remains in critical condition. Amy ucf downtown orlando campus is a step closer to reality. The florida board over governors approves 20 million now towards the project. That woulds huge, the university is also chipping in its own 20 million and will raise another 20 million privately. But, it is still not a done deal. It is a big, exciting day for ucf and students and the city of orlando and the community. We have two steps yet. We have the approval by the board of governors but we have to get the 20 million in the legislative budget and now the ball bounces over to the legislative court and then, assuming all goes well, the legislature, with the funding and the appropriations bill goes to the governor for review by him and his executive staff. We have two more stops to go. Points, last year, right . And it didnt get approved last year. What do you think is different this time around . The last year proved to be important for us. Allowed us to refine or plan and make sure we have the right programs lining up for downtown and programs that will be made better because they are downtown and a lot of students with the careers they choose, allows us to focus on academics and our building to maximize the first building and a different funding plan, a 60 Million Building and 20 million from the state and 20 million from philanthropy in orlando and 20 million from ucf resources. Amy what can we expect from the campus . What type of students and what types of will it be graduate program. It will be undergraduate, freshman to graduate students and between us and our partners well have 7700 students coming to downtown orlando. One example if you are in legal studies, you are probably based in downtown orlando. But the beauty is, three blocks the other way, the county and Circuit Court house and if you are in administration, one step to the south, Orlando Health and the north, florida hospital, two of the biggest and best hypotheticals in the u. S. And the students have the hospitals in the u. S. And, they go to school in the proximity of where they want to pursue their careers. Amy will they do all their housing downtown . Will there be housing. Yes, and yes. All the programs based downtown, theyll be able to take the entire classes there and, if they pick up another major or minor well have a shuttle from point a to point b, between the campuses for our students and housing. Ryan what we want to focus more on today. Andrew jones found dead in a Shopping Center parking lot off of state road 50 back on february 5th. Last weekend detectives found his abandoned burnedout car in oakland and you can see the video. 15 minutes down the road from where he was killed. His dad spoke to us earlier this week. There has to be someone it has got to be someone close, you know, and right up the road is this community, has to look at, someone shot somebody. There is a murderer out there and it could be your kid. Ryan the executive director of crime line, good to see you and, the sergeant with the Clermont Police. We see this car and know it has been there, between when it was found and when it went missing . What we are really interested in to help the police department, is he was shot and killed on the 5th of february. Looking at almost the full month, the car has been in or community, different places. Out in certain areas, any information you can give us about where the car might have been, prior to finally getting fortunate enough to finding it in oakland, that would help a lot. And, maybe descriptions of people who might have been in the car, so we can help clermont. Ryan what else can you tell us about the case. Looking for the community to tell us, someone out there knows what happened. Were looking for them to do the right thing to. Wed love for the individuals or, you know, people who did this to come forward. And to put it behind them. But were looking for any Community Support to help us, you know, put the bad guys, bring them to justice. Ryan you know, any in Law Enforcement any piece of evidence you have is a big deal, to have the car, how does it change the investigation . It gives us a lot of new things to investigate as far as where the car has been and who has been in the car and things like that. We have good images, the car it looks different and we see the images, different cars. I ask people to focus on the car when the the photo of a car similar to that and, again, this car is a car that someone doesnt always have, they had it for a period of three weeks. From the time the murder happened to the time it was torched here in oakland. Eric williams was taking care of aleatha burke and she got ahold of a gun and shot herself in the shoulder by accident. The sixyearold later died at Central Florida regional hospital. Williamsy williams is a convicted felon and faces charges including child neglect. There is a responsibility there and as an owner of a firearm you need to store it securely and away from juveniles. We owe them that to protect them and keep them safe. Grief counselors have been on hand all week long at her school and williams is scheduled to face a judge in court today, at 1 30. Amy Melbourne Police arrested Stanley Jones after the crash and officers say he rearended a driver forcing them to rear end another car. Drove to his apartment complex, right along trinidad circle. When officers arrested him he had a blood alcohol level of. 211, more than twice the legal limit. Jones was taken to the Brevard County jail and has since bonded out. John Kissimmee Police need your help identifying this man who robbed a 7eleven at gunpoint. On february 28th, police say the man walked into the store there on south john young parkway. And pulled out a gun and demanded money. Police say the clerk, though, ran into a back room and locked the door. The guy took off. Nobody was hurt, if you rec him you are asked to call crime line. Observational skills and compassion, the corporal is awarded the Orlando Police Departments Community service award. [applause]. Corporal greg barber was honored yesterday for how he handled the pretty unique traffic stop involving an elderly couple, both in that your 80s, happened in their 80s, in september. They were driving the wrong way when barber realized they were disoriented and hadnt eaten for hours, he took them to a local restaurant as they waited for someone to come pick them up. The honor comes as barber retires from force after more than 20 years, is a newly retired fellow. John and this morning he joins us on good day to talk about the award and the moment. Appreciate you coming in today. Thank you. John out of retirement take us back to the day. You pulled a couple over. What happened. I was coming off of state road 528, the exit ramp and there is a toll plaza there and i saw a car coming the wrong way through the toll plaza and near the airport and you have you can get lost and i stopped the car and came upon the couple. And i could see they were elderly and i said where are you heading to and they said apopka, and going in the opposite direction and where are you coming from and they mentioned a place down south florida and trying go to a Government Office in apopka at 6 00 p. M. , and the and as i started talking to them, do you know where you are now . And the gentleman points to the bridge for the 528 and said that is the bridge from new york to new jersey and i was in a situation, they dont know what is happening and it is a matter of trying to find Family Members and determine i knew who they were but didnt know, do they have relatives locally and trying to get the information out was the hard part and finding they had a son in south florida and i got in touch with him. Amy a lot of it is detective work that went into the traffic stop and you took hem, i understand to a cracker barrel, is that right . What happened from there . I knew it would be several hours. Again, south florida, trying to get Family Members up there, 3, 4 hours and i was like, lets get something to eat and another officer assisted, a team effort. I got the award but it was a team effort and they were hesitant, no, we are fine and we talked them into going to and wait there and they we dont need to eat and as you talked to help you realized they hadnt eaten all day and were disoriented, where they were and what was going on. I mean, it is part of job and luckily, the family got somebody there to take care of them. And turn them over there and, i talked to their son a week later and found out they were okay but he had to take the car away from them. Amy thank goodness. It could have caused a serious someone else. We see it all the time. Silver alerts go out and sometimes people are found hundred of Miles Per Hour from their house. It is unfortunate that it happens in our society but it turned out good. John you said it is another day on the job, and your crew also helped you. And when you got the award, did you think you deserved an award . Was it just another day on the job. For me, another day on the job and what i got an award for is not something that officers whether the Orlando Police department or Central Florida, across the country. This is Community Service and it is a job where they go out and do these things and dont get recognized because they know at a part of the job. I didnt think it was anything special and appreciate the station wanted to put positive stories out there about Law Enforcement and im recently retired. John the best in the world. Im glad to see you were bringing us on and police do this and put something out there positive. And i imagine, especially someone who is retired from the police force, having spent your whole life, it is hard to watch some stories coming out now and what appears to be a battle in this country over Law Enforcement . Absolutely and it is we see the narrative that is currently out there, and how, heavy handed Law Enforcement brutality and Everything Else and that is why you hear these stories but there are officers every day that do stuff like this. Community service award. There were 3 or 4 other officers, helped the hopingless and Everything Else. So it is difficult to see that and you see the gun violence against Law Enforcement officers. And the number of officers killed by gunfire this year and, good for society to know other things are going on besides just officers and brutality.
