heavy rain but not until 11 o'clock this morning and that ice really piled up. this is what happened in the upper levels of the atmosphere. we had snow falling high in the atmosphere but then a very big warm layer changing to it rain. with those southerly winds we expect they had rain to work its way to the surface but that cold air at the surface made that rain freeze on contact. hence freezing rain. and it wasn't until 11 o'clock in the morning that that warm layer made it to the surface and changed everything over to rain. we're talking about condition that is improved but we still have a flood warning in effect for parts of bucks county, also burlington county and mercer county in new jersey until 2 o'clock in the morning. coming up we're going to talk about the mlk holiday the next chance of snow in the forecast and also a look ahead to next weekend but in the meantime we have to talk about the big concerns overnight tonight. meteorologist justin drabick is live in the cbs3 mobile weather lab. he's checking conditions in plymouth meeting montgomery county. good evening justin. >> good evening, kathy. that's right we're going to be watching these temperatures closely tonight and here we are in the cbs3 mobile weather lab. we have 36 degrees this hour in plymouth meeting. when we left center city philadelphia it was 40 degrees. again northern suburbs are going to be colder. rain ended. skies have cleared out a little bit. actually looking after some stars over the region but if you look at the road there's a little sheen to it. that's still wet and we're going to watch those untreated surfaces, could again refreeze through the overnight. right now holding in the mid 30's. so, let's talk about this black ice situation through the overnight. again, mainly north of the city best shot to get near freezing or even below it so temperatures will drop through the overnight hours. a lost standing water still especially on some of those side streets and areas where we did see the ponding on the roads. those surfaces could refreeze overnight, sidewalks, drive way, front steps could get a little slick early tomorrow morning so just keep that in mind. again we'll bring you back here live in the cbs3 mobile weather lab. we're on germantown pike right now in plymouth meeting. all is quiet, traffic looking good temperatures above freezing but we are talking about those numbers dropping. a couple of degrees below. right now sitting at 36 degrees in the cbs3 mobile weather lab so again play it safe if you're heading out overnight and certainly tomorrow morning and just be careful for that black ice situation. we did see a few salt crews out here. they're going to be treating the roads which is great news for the morning commute tomorrow. that's the latest here in plymouth meeting in the cbs3 mobile weather lab. we'll send it back to the studio. >> justin thank you. slick conditions proved deadly on the schuylkill expressway as one car after another spun out of control. one person was killed, dozens more injured. about 60 cars were ultimately involved in that pileup.
