Morning in Atlantic City airport coming in at 1 degree. If you were out early this morning you felt that sting on your face if you did not cover exposed skin. Felt like 21 below in allentown, 22 below in reading, 20 below or so throughout the state of delaware 17 below in philadelphia and at the shore 19 below zero. Wind chills have recovered but not all that much. Were still sitting near zero if not just a couple degrees above that but the winds will relax overnight tonight but we are expecting more record cold temperatures by tomorrow morning. Were also tracking this warm front to the south. , see precipitation breaking out. Even atlanta expecting up to an inch of snow has this pushes to the north and east and in fact winter storm watches and advisories have been posted for our entire viewing area for the day on saturday as snow will break out first. Then it changes to sleet freezing rain and ah eventually rain, so a big mess on our hands for saturday into sunday morning. Brian, when i come back well talk about the timing of when this pushes in and how much snow youre going to see. It could be the biggest snowfall many of us have seen so far this winter scenesy season. Thanks very much. Water can be a real problem when the thermometer gets this low and thats the case in one philadelphia neighborhood where the streets today looked more like an ice rink. David henry now live in Overbrook Park and davids got the latest from there. Reporter Robert Fletcher wasnt going anywhere as he tried to get to work this morning. His car was hopelessly stuck ice. This water been running for a few days man. So this is what happened. Each day the ice get built up higher and higher. Reporter the ice is at least 6inches thick and it may take until spring to melt it. It may also take that long for the rest of us to thaw out. People ventured outside today only if they had to. Its freezing out here. Reporter youve got the hat, the hood, the heavy coat, layers. Yeah. Reporter you should be fine, right. No, i need more than this i think. We need more sun. Reporter most couldnt get warm enough no matter how many layers. Professionals who have to be out here have learned to adapt. This doesnt bother you. No im fine. Im perfect. Im dressed for it. Reporter youre out here all day. Yes. Reporter how do you dress for it. Just layers. Reporter one day you never mind wearing that bulletproof vest. Never mind wearing it. Reporter everyone else wishes they were someplace else today, nice and warm. Im pretty anxious. I was hoping to get to the beach this winter but i didnt get any trips this year. Reporter i hear cape may isnt very crowded this time of year. Yeah, right. Reporter people have been looking out for each other in this dangerously cold weather. Greg robinson is one of them. Its super cold out here, very cold out here. Reporter what are you doing out here. Imim going to see my grandmom see how shes doing. Reporter very important to check with elderly neighbors and relatives. This situation isnt going to be resolved any time soon it looks like. These cars on 76 street are frozen solid in the ice. We checked with the Water Department about that water flowing down the alley back here and they say that is the problem of the homeowner its a private issue, the homeowner has to get that water fixed and theyve got much bigger emergencies theyre racing to over the city. Live in Overbrook Park, david henry, channel6 action news. Brian. All right, david, thanks as always. From our delaware news room today amazing the heat is out again at a New Castle County apartment flex and now management says it was no accident this time. We have been following the saga at the creeks at marshalton on nelson road. Residents spent days without heat this week because of a burst pipe there. It was just restored yesterday but hours later someone stole copper pipes from that property and that, of course, knocked out the boiler that heats three buildings leaving people in the frigid temperatures once again. The apartment manager thinks a former employee is sabotaging the complex. That claim is still under investigation right now but in the meantime, county officials have been stepping in. It doesnt sound to me like the Management Team is doing a very good job and thats unacceptable in our county in this day and age. Everybody should have heat and a warm place and ill take that responsibility. Now Officials Say the heat should be back on by tonight but if that is not the case, residents do have a number to call to make arrangements for a different warm place to stay. From our new jersey news room, a local high school had to cancel classes after it lost heat. The action cam was at Camden High School where students went home around 1 oclock this afternoon. Administrators are still trying to figure out if theyll have school on monday and that is just one of the cold related problems weve seen out there today. New jersey correspondent Nora Muchanic continues our Team Coverage. She is live in trenton. Reporter nora. Reporter hi, shirleen. We set a record today in trenton but its not the kind of record you really want. It is wicked out. Take a look at the folks waiting for the river line down there. The combination of the wind on top of the bitter cold temperatures, it will stop you in your tracks but you dont really want to do that because if you stay in one spot too long, youll freeze. Just to come out its freezing. I mean, its brutal. I aint felt nothing like this in my life. Reporter that may be because today was a record breaker for the capitol city. 0 degrees and thats not even counting the wind chill. Its just blistering cold. I came down here from bellevue avenue and i was so happy when the bank opened up, its just freezing out here. Reporter waiting for the bus on state street was no picnic. Oh, i bundles up. I dont play. Got on long john thermals, thermal socks, everything. Reporter and you still feel the cold. You still feel it. Reporter the subzero temperatures contributed to water leak on south olden avenue in trenton that flooded the gutter and iced up the intersection at farragut avenue. It freezes up, caused a lot of problems. It leaks everywhere. Reporter and as you would expect working outside in these brutal temperatures for any length of time is difficult. But at nighttime is when it gets real bad. If youre working in the middle of the night thats when its really bad out but just layers of clothing. Its tough nd the water is freezing right on contact. Reporter not a good day. No, you it is not a good day. Reporter same thing for mailman john gold teen who says hes glad to keep moving as he delivers his route. Its unbearable. I got on three pair of everything day. The only way you can stay outside is for any length of time is to have planned ahead and dressed in layers. Are you warm enough in all your gear. Oh, yes ive got two pairs of pants, three sweatshirts on, im ready for it. Reporter back live now youre looking at the platform outside the river liang folks are lining up. It is warmer than it was this morning but it is still bitter cold out and theyre dressed for it. With the rush hour approaching now people are going to be out catching trains and buses. Its a brutal night to be out waiting for that. The only weapon we found today is to layer up, lots of clothes layer after layer. Live in trenton, Nora Muchanic channel6 action news. Shirleen. Good advice. Go inside and get warm. Thank you. Heres a live look in Atlantic City where you can see ice on the beach. You heard adam mention theres snow on the way for this weekend. Reporter yes, it is, shirleen. In a little over an hour 700 dancers will walk in at the Bryce Jordan Center and they will begin dancing and standing for 46 straight hours. Behind me you see those kids right there. Well, those are the captains. Those are the ones that are going to be supporting those dancers but the real inspiration here is the kids. You often hear about ftk thats for the kids because the money raised here is for pediatric cancer and the four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey hospital. This years theme empower the dreamers. Lets go live to matt pelman in the traffic center. Hey, guys. The trip home takes some effort especially on a friday afternoon. This afternoon weve a bunch of accidents to complicate things even farther like one here on 95 northbound side in south philadelphia. Little windy out there. Cameras shaking a little bit but maybe you can see the penndot arrow board. The crash involving a vehicle into the median barrier is taking out the left lane and causing just a touch of slowing as you come north of the walt whitman bridge. Not our only issue on 95. We had a broken down truck earlier southbound by girard. Speeds like 10 Miles Per Hour as you come past the betsy ross bridge. A crash in kensington. A crash traveling a fire truck in upper dublin. Stick with pine town road as an alternate around that. In lower salford by the exxon station watch for a wreck along main street. Back outside camera time in Chester County this is 202 southbound side near Stetson School road and skiles boulevard. Another crash traveling a truck taking out the right lane causing really low speeds as you come from west chester. Lets grab the ipod do the commuter report on this friday afternoon. Happy friday everybody. One of our friends using the waze app talking about a complete stand still aka friday afternoon volume northbound side through delco. Using the waze app we can zoom in and see the alerts and some of the slow speeds sometimes. Looks like southbound is busy in area as well. Well check it again coming up in the next half hour. Very good matt. Thank you very much. We have some breaking news also impacting traffic right now. Chopper 6 live over the scene of a bus accident actually two buses involved in this. Of course, fans from all across the world will be in these prime seats here up in the bleachers cheering them on as they make their way down. They have been busy all through the night setting up the red carpet and also putting out life sized oscar statues to adorn this entire area. It just looks gorgeous. Speaking of the red carpet some fun facts. Takes them two days to roll it out. There are 16,500 feet of red carpet. So i wondered when did the red carpet actually make its debut. Get this. This is tony campise who has been battling a brain tumor since he was four years old. Through make a wish, tony asked to attend a flyers game and sit in the box but when flyers jake voracek heard about tony he decided to make the experience even more memorable so today flyers gm ron hextall signed that young super fan to a weekend contract here at the skate zone in voorhees. Then they surprised him with a locker in the teams dressing room and ice time with the team. I didnt even know i was going out to play with them. So, it was just wow. This is a once in a lifetime for anyone, so it was pretty awesome. Pretty special. And good news here. It does not end there for this little man. Tomorrow voracek will personally pick up tony and drive him to the game where he and his family will watch from a suite and then hang out with the whole flyers gang. What a cool young kid and a bunch of great guys for giving him that experience. Love that. As we told you earlier there is snow on the way for this weekend and as if this couldnt be any worse yeah, and not just a little bit of snow either. Meteorologist adam Joseph Standing by with the latest call from accuweather adam. Well get a few inchs in many locations. Then well have a brief period of ice on top of the snow before it changes to rain. A mess this weekend. Were clear for now and tonight and first thing tomorrow morning but there you see the warm front and some of the moisture gathering down to the south and this will expand in real estate and grow as it heads to the north and east. Temperaturewise still pretty brutal out there right now. 17 in philadelphia, 16 trenton, 14 reading and allentown, wildwood right now 16 degrees. But we still have a light breeze out there so it feels like zero in allentown reading as well as lancaster four philadelphia. One lonely degree down towards wildwood and cape may and dover also just 1 degree. Satellite and radar the one good thing about arctic air is it holds very little moisture, so you can see the void of cloud cover across our region, some is building in the western part of the ohio valley but that wont make it in time for tonight so its another clear night with more records but less wind. We could drop to that record in trenton of three, two below in allentown, six in wilmington and a record of three in Atlantic City. Seven for philadelphia and reading expecting zero by tomorrow morning. Future tracker will show that precipitation building. Where you see the purple, that is the snow. The blue, thats the mix. The green is the rain. And notice again how it kind of grows here by 1 oclock tomorrow afternoon in those western suburbs. Thats when it starts to snow in pennsylvania, overspreads early afternoon into new jersey and delaware. Were starting to see that mix. By 6 oclock tomorrow night to the south, heavy snow philadelphia to the north and then by midnight well see it flip to rain pretty much everywhere with the exception of the Lehigh Valley where they will hold onto a little bit of sleet and freezing rain a little longer. So heres the time line. 11 00 a. M. To 2 00 p. M. , thats when it begins as all snow no matter where you are. Three phenomenon 3 00 a. M. Into sunday morning thats the heaviest snow, ice and rain as it transitions and early on sunday morning 6 00 a. M. To 9 00 a. M. It ends as rain showers even up in the Lehigh Valley. So, in the far southern zones dover millville Atlantic City one to 2inches before that changeover. For the greater wilmington philadelphia, trenton location, even those northwestern suburbs of philadelphia, two to 4inches to remind you philadelphias biggest snow this season is 3pointer 7inches so we could come close if not break that and then far to the north and west, close to the Lehigh Valley northern bucks and montgomery county, four to 6inches of that wet snow with a little bit of rain at the end. Your four day at 4 00 that afternoon and evening snow breaking up, 33 degrees. A leftover morning rain shower on sunday with late sun an mild day to help melt some of it at 46 but we head right back into the freezer here monday and tuesday, bitter cold, 20s for highs, Single Digits come Tuesday Morning for low temperatures. So, to get the arctic air out unfortunately the warm air always develops as kind of precipitation. So okay, all right. Anything is better than this. Thanks. Somewhere else. A drexel universities student is taking his app to abcs shark tank tonight. 23yearold Christopher Gray created scholly after months of researching scholarships on line the for himself. Chopper 6 live over the 4900 block of Chestnut Street where crews are on the scene of a of what was reported to us as a fire in a two story structure. , see the ladder over the roof of that structure right now. From this Vantage Point it would appear that crews have a pretty good handle on this but we did get reports that one person was trapped on the second story of this home there and weve not gotten confirmation that were person was freed just yet. Again, fire crews on the scene of what was a fire here in the 4900 block of Chestnut Street in west philadelphia. Well keep you posted on the status of the person trapped inside that building. New jersey u. S. Senators asking for a crackdown on possible Insurance Fraud that followed hurricane sandy. Bob menendez and cory booker asked the attorney general to look into the problem. They say insurers have tried to reduce flood damage payouts after sandy hit in october of 2012. In november, a judge in long island ordered insurers to produce information that could help reveal whether contractors edited damage reports. Menendez and booker say the situation in new jersey is similar enough to warrant its own investigation. And still ahead on action news at 4 00 today just because hes not coaching doesnt mean he cant yell at people. Why bobby knight flew off the handle at a temple game. Thanks for the ride around norfolk and i just wanted to say geico is proud to have served the military for over 75 years roger that. Captains waiting to give you a tour of the wisconsin now. Couldve parked a little bit closer. Its gonna be dark by the time i get there. Geico. Proudly serving the military for over 75 years. Action news continues with meteorologist adam joseph. Alicia vitarelli Shirleen Allicott and brian taff. Hello again. 4 30 and action news continues with a freebie friday thats all about celebrating all things freezing. Might as well. Plus she used to be thin and now. Im fat and i dont mind saying im fat. Im a plus sized woman and im happier. Okay. And hear why a mother of five decided to tell the world she is better off heavy than she ever was slim. Plus, weve got developing news in the murder of a member of nicki minajs touring group. One person is in custody now and police are hunting down two more. A live report on that double stabing is straight ahead. But we begin with weather records shattered in the tristate area. Yeah, trentons 0degree morning with a negative 20degree wind chill and wilmingtons 2degree with a 21 wind chill both setting new lows. Not to be outdone philadelphia and Atlantic City get honorable mentions with their low temperatures today and by the way, they had wind chills between negative 17 and 19 and Mother Nature is going to keep piling it on with another round of snow this weekend. Mercilessly. It has been a long week. We started monday with wind chills between 17 to 20 degrees below z if you take a look at the wind chill it has improved some this afternoon at 4 degrees but thats still mighty cold. Four in cincinnati, feels like four below in chicago. Jacksonville and atlanta feels like it is in the 30s with raleigh at 24 degrees. The problem with arctic air the good side of it you got bright sunshine. The bad side, when it moves out with a warm front all that warm air that will be trying to flood in overrides that existing arctic iran you start to ring out the moisture in the atmosphere with moisture and you can see its breaking out nashville and atlanta where it will be snowing this evening. That far south. That will head to the north and east, collide with that arctic air so we have winter storm watches for philadelphia all the way up to the Lehigh Valley and the poconos where several inches of snow will fall before a mix and an advisory for southern new jersey and delaware, less snow will fall here. Theyll get some but it will be a quicker transition to some of that that sleet freezing rain and eventually rain. For the i95 metro area, wilmington philadelphia and trenton, all the forecast models pretty good agreement between about two and 4inches, that is our forecast and if you take a look at the Lehigh Valley where the cold air is going to last longer, our forecast up north, four to 6inches and you can see the models go anywhere from about 3pointer four on the rpm as high as 7. 4 on the nam so much more snow this go round to the north as opposed to the south like the last storm. Shirleen when i come back ill show that you expected snowfall map and talk about another blast of bitter air in that sevenday forecast beyond it. Thank you adam. Yeah. Through the snow, ice and brutal cold this season be sure to stay on top it all with 6abc. Com weather. Lets get another check on the roads right now. Matt pelman in the action News Traffic Center with another update for us. Yes, and some sun glare inhibiting our view of a crash here alongy along the schuylkill expressway, brian and shirleen, but maybe you can make it out. One vehicle facing the wrong way here in the westbound lanes, the little honda facing eastbound, have a couple other vehicles involved off to the right shoulder. And as you can imagine, this is causing a huge delay. As you come westbound from south street through this point approaching the roosevelt boulevard, this is a spot that would normally be congested on a friday afternoon so with this lane out of commission and with all the activity associated with the crash things are extra jammed up as you come out of the city. I think i would stick with the river drives, the mlk or kelly instead of the westbound schuylkill because we have another accident as well westbound near girard partially sticking out into the right lane. So apair of problems on 76. Luckily our crash on 95 northbound approaching penns landing has cleared out. So, thats some good news. But we still have that wreck in kensington involving the pedestrian along jean near tioga and the one in holmesburg involving the bus at state and rhawn. Its been an afternoon of a lost accidents, water main breaks disabled vehicles. Heres a crash involving a fire truck in upper dublin along Fort Washington avenue. Stick with pine town road. The big guy back there but when it comes out to the coveted statues on sunday i bet you didnt know that roughly 3,000 of them have been handed out since 1929 and for the past 30 years theyve been handcrafted in chicago. Its a painstaking process that begins with laid dells of molten metal going into oscar mold. After the buffing comes plating with layers of copper nicker silver and finally a heavy coating of 24 karat gold. Theres also a unique serial number edged into each statue for security ton ensure down the road that the statues are the real deal. Those numbers are the only differences from one oscar to the next. Otherwise, each golden dye is identical. We take so much care to make sure that every oscar is exactly the same, weighs the same looks the same, has the same amount of gold on it, every year its going to be consistent. Several inches before more arctic air by next week so i havent said one good thing all week. Youre working hard. He is working hard. Yeah, another day tomorrow on tap. As we take a look right now double scan live radar around the region lots of sunshine with this arctic air. Looks nice when youre looking inside out. The minute you step outside is when you get whacked by that cold air. The high today in philadelphia just 18 degrees. This is the third time this week high temperatures have only topped off into the teens. Our normal high 45 degrees. That would feel almost summerlike at this point. The record 70 and that low of 2 degrees was 1 degree shy of the record set back in 1979. But even that two this morning, its the first time in over two decades we have been that cold in philadelphia. Five in trenton right now is your wind chill, zero for reading, Allentown Lancaster one in dover and Atlantic City right now feels like 2 degrees. Again, theres that arctic air with all of its sunshine but notice the clouds how they form right off the coastline. Thats that cold air. When that bumps over the relatively warmer waters of the atlantic you condense the air and you get that cloud cover to form so theyre called cold air cumulus that youre seeing over the open waters of the atlantic. But more records for tonight into tomorrow morning. Philadelphia close to the record of six by tomorrow morning. Allentown should break its record of zero. Were expecting two below a broken record by tomorrow morning in trenton of three the same for wilmington at six and Atlantic City at the airport tying the old record of 3 degrees. Moisture right now is breaking out over the tennessee valley. Atlanta even some snow showers predicting about a coating to an inch of snow for atlanta this evening and overnight. That snow will start falling in the western edge of lancaster, reading and allentown around noontime tomorrow. Then it pushes over that i95 corridor. By about 1 00 to 3 oclock in the afternoon turning steadier and heavier in these dark blues here just south and west of wilmington. And as we get into the evening hours of 6 30, this is when the precipitation will be falling pretty heavily still snow wilmington to the north. There it is, mixing with sleet and freezing rain to the south and by 9 30, it starts to try to change to rain in philadelphia. Still mixing to the north and west. It could be a period of some sleet and freezing rain there. And notice how the bay tries to capture some of that sleet longer. Its because the models thinking the bay is actually frozen so this colder air there but no matter what it is rain even on the brink of the Lehigh Valley by midnight tomorrow afew rain showers sunday morning but the sun returns to salvage the second half of the weekend. Down to the south millville Atlantic City and dover 1 to 2 inches and this is going to be a very heavy wet snow, not that light fluffy snow. Two to four for wilmington, philadelphia trenton, the heart of the Delaware Valley. And then bump north of the pennsylvania turnpike northern montgomery bucks county, Lehigh Valley, reading were expecting four to 6inches of that wet snowfall. So afternoon and evening were expecting a quick thumping so when the snow starts it will quickly turn heavy. Roads will turn slick. There will be a period of icing on top of that before it changes and ends as some light rain late tomorrow night into sunday morning. The exclusive accuweather 7day forecast, 33 degrees tomorrow. Up to 46 on sunday. Sunday afternoon actually is going to be really nice given that the sun will be back and temperatures to normal.
