Hundreds of viewers have written in to tell us about an amazing young boy named robbie, so we reached out and got him tickets. Hes here today, and i would like the whole family to come on down and sit here. George oliphant after seeing him on the Ellen Degeneres show and hearing his story, i wanted to see if there was anything i could do to help him and his family. Robbie was born with a very rare skin disorder called epidermolysis bullosa or eb for short. The doctors told us hed never come home. And as a mom, youre like, what . Ellen degeneres explain, kathy, what it is that robbie has. Basically at birth he had no skin on either leg. If you know velcro, roberts lacking the teeth that are in velcro. So any type of friction or trauma to robert would cause his skin to blister. Today he still has no skin on either leg. And about 75 of his body is wrapped in bandages. Robbie twible i have bandages on my feet, on my legs, on my back, sometimes on my hands. Theres no cure, so we just treat him every day with bandage changes that unfortunately are excruciatingly painful. They can take up to three hours a day just because we have to stop and the pain is just too much. So Ellen Degeneres wow. Rob twible thats where you come in. Kathy twible yep. Rob twible he loves your show. Robbie twible i watch your show during my bandage changes. Ellen degeneres ah. Thanks so much. That that means so much to me. When any of us feel sorry for ourselves, its like, this show is a constant reminder to me of the true heroes in the world, and you are one of them. Robbie twible thank you. Kathy twible lifes just different for us. Rob twible you have to regauge what normal is. And i know i personally and my wife, we get our strength from robert. You know, i am tough on robert. Ill be the first to say it. You know, im going to constantly push him. But i sorry. But i push him, because i love him. Rob twible hes our hero and he teaches people to appreciate what they have in life. Kathy twible eb does not have robbie. Robbie has eb but does not have him. Robbies bedroom is a constant reminder of his daily struggles. I am confident theres something i can do to change that. Robbie twible my bedrooms filled with posters on almost every wall. I have a bed, and then i have my bookshelves and then the dresser. But unfortunately my closet and my other half of the room is filled with bandages. Kathy twible his bedroom is not a fun place to look at. Its part bedroom, part er. Kathy twible robert currently uses the same exact changing table that we used on him to change his diapers as an infant. We cant put it in the basement because its not accessible when the wounds are opened. Robbie twible having a medical table in my room, kind of reminds me of the daily pain i have to go through. Kathy twible a bedroom free of that reminder would be pretty cool. George oliphant all right. I think its that house right there on the corner. Rob twible you know, by being on george to the rescue would be helping all children with eb. Kathy twible you know we have one huge thing in this life that gets us through a lot it and its hope. Kathy twible we currently have a jacuzzi tub and like a standup shower. Rob twible robert doesnt have the mobility to raise his legs like you or i would. We dont have to have extra space. We just have to manage the space. We can make it look very large. We just need you to knock it down and you to build it back. Done. Done and done. There was a very high counts of cladosporium in robbies rooms, and in the bathroom, and also into the master bedroom. George oliphant well this is going to push us back a little bit. Its going to take three to four days to actually do all the mold remediation that we need to do. So guys, im just going to go ahead and put these ear protectors on, because i dont really want to hear what this is going to do to our schedule. [laughing] George Oliphant make sure everyone who comes through here knows what were dealing with. Yes, sir. I think danger pretty much points it out. [laughter] are you up . Gary zaccaro yep. So right now, these mold spores are undisturbed but as soon as we start touching them disturb em and theyre going thats why weve got to be all geared up. Correct. So right here we have our hepa 500 that is going to collect the spores that we disturbed. George oliphant yep. Cory and then it will actually filter them right outside. Were going to scrub all the beams right now with our dry vacuum. George oliphant wow. Cory we use our hydroperoxyl cleaner to spray down the beams. And then well be scrubbing that off as well. George oliphant good news, gary, we got our mold testing report back and we passed. No mold. Everything is cleared out. Good. George oliphant bad news, we found what appears to be a squirrels nest. I will do this for robbie, but i dont i dont like critters, and i dont like tight spaces that i cant get away from. Oh, please dont be a critter. Please dont be a critter. Ah gary zaccaro we have solar powered attic fans that were going to install in each part of the back of the home. George oliphant you got to keep the air flow moving as well . Gary zaccaro yes. Gary zaccaro so water runs right there underneath the shingles, right down into the house. George oliphant oh, my god. Theres shingles missing all over the place. No wonder they had water and moisture coming through. And these are the things theyre not even going to see. Nobody looks at their roof or looks up behind the drywall and is like, oh, i had a squirrels nest, had some black mold, my roofer never finished. Just keep adding it on. George oliphant not only does robbie love going to the theater, but hes also quite the performer. So i have a great surprise in store for him. Rob twible robert loves broadway. Kathy twible any time we had family in this house, he would say, showtime. And it didnt matter who you were, you just had to watch robbie perform. Talent is one thing, but having a good heart is half the battle. So hes going to go far. It was awesome. They were such nice people. George oliphant this is going to go in the shower, so so the nonslip when robbie or whoevers in the shower, theyre not going to have to worry about taking a spill. Louise davis absolutely. We added quite a few safety features to robbies house, one of which is the nonslip tile, and the preseal grout, so that it wont grow bacteria nearly as fast. We also added a handrail, an adjustable shower head so that the entire family can enjoy the shower. We also added a handrail out front, so that robbie can get in and out of the house a little easier. George oliphant good thing we widened the doorway here. Gary zaccaro all right, lets put it down nice and easy. I think we need to get this set in place now. George oliphant right. So we got the holes drilled so wed have our hot, cold, and our drain. Gary zaccaro wow. Perfection. George oliphant like a glove. The main concern for robbie was, he wanted all of the bandages removed from the actual bedroom. Unfortunately theres no more space on this floor to put all that stuff. How are we going have it here but make it disappear . To have all of robbies medical stuff in his room, but make it disappear . Sean egan were doing a custom cabinet here that were concealing the massage table. Ok. Sean egan we built a base cabin around it, and im making a socket thats going to come out further than the cabinet. And were going to put sliding doors on there thats concealed hardware. Each door is going to pull to the side, over the other unit, and then the tables going to come down. And then when its time to put it away close it up. Done. Out of sight, out of mind. Sean egan absolutely. George oliphant so louise, the bathroom looks like its pretty much buttoned up. All we need is really your design elements. Uh, yeah, actually we need to get our robe hooks up. Were going to hang some chartreuse towels up. George oliphant oh, i like that. Louise davis for a pop of color. George oliphant now we cant forget about dad. If hes anything like me, he probably does his shaving in the shower, so i got him this command fog resistant here. Its awesome because it will not damage the tiles, and it can hang strongly in wet conditions which is exactly what were dealing with here. Hes a smidge taller than i am so im thinking this is ideal. Pretty much anything that reminds him of a good time. George oliphant im glad that we have all of this open shelving because literally theres tons of stuff to fool with. Yeah. Finding out that the roof was never completed, that there were no attic fans upstairs to circulate the air, that there was in fact black mold and squirrels in his bedroom ceiling. A doctor writing about a very troubled 10yearold boy suffering from hostility issues. Ably possibly schizophrenia. The troubled little boy . His name is well known. Robert durst. By now you have heard the saga. The disappearing wife, the dead friend, the dismembered neighbor. He has been a subject of several dateline episodes and the star not in the way he intended of hbos the jinx. Nobody tells the whole truth. Do you . Does anyone know the truth about robert durst . The story behind the story. The trail we follow, the revelations we encounter, the personal account he wrote and we were given which have led us into a very weird place, the lost years of the infamous robert durst. The tale is like quick sand. It sucks you in. Bob is endlessly fascinating and always surprises me. He has been elusive, material, sometimes desperate and always in motion. Tonight we will track him, his strange detour off the road and off the grid. A life that no one, not even his family or Close Friends can fathom. He has a good heart. I really think so. We begin with two people who have known and loved the man they call bobby. God father of their son, close friend of more than 40 years, long before the rest of the world heard of him. When did you meet him . We went to high school together. Speaking here for the First Time Since dursts arrest. He has a heart, but its caused me a great deal. Whatever happened to bob, its hard. He often shared personal photos and the story of bob starting with the family disaster. His mom committed suicide when he was 7 years old and it was devastating experience for bob. Compounded by his strange relationships with his brother, douglas and his father seymour in the 1970s stewart introduced bob to a young woman and the whole twisted tale was set in motion. I was living on east 52nd street on the second floor and kathie was living on the third floor and bob owned the building. He used to come and collect the rent. Kathie was his young and beautiful upstairs neighbor. Prince charming and princess. But it didnt last. A few years later they watched their prince and princess grow apart. She became more independent, wasnt a fairytale anymore. Kathies brother, jim, told us it was more like a horror. There is a dark side of bob that was fairly well camouflaged when they were first going out and getting married and escalated in abuse. Remember the doctors letter warning the 10yearold bob suffered from severe hostility issues . Kathie gave a copy to her friends including ellen straus, evidence she said just in case. Kathie warned all of us if anything happened look to bob. Dont let him get away with it. Then in 1982 kathie durst disappeared. How did he take it . You know, he asked if we had seen her or heard anything or knew anything . They didnt. No one did. Bob was typically almost detached in his demeanor, i dont know nothing and i dont know anything. Bob denied any involvement in kathies disappearance and still does. At the time he was careful to distance himself from investigators. New york times reporter covered the durst real estate empire for three decades. When kathie vanished bobs protective friend susan berman became his unofficial spokesperson. And susan would call back and say bobs really not feeling right right now. Im going to handle a lot of this. Bob was pretty much we have obtained this, his own accounts, his version of things which he wrote later. Here is what he wrote about her disappearance. After my wife left my compulsive use of alcohol, drugs and food changed from an infreak problem to a daily event. He didnt come into work for about two years. Later when bob began showing up at work again sporadically it wasnt anything like the buttoned up executive. He enjoyed smoking pot in a social situation, burping and farting because it disturbed people and he liked to watch their reaction. These stories about misbehaving, peeing in a waste basket. It gave pause to the family. And it was no great surprise when the family patriarch chose bobs younger brother to run the family business. Did he think to the point that he had a shot at it . He was going for it. That was supposed to be his job. He was upset. It had a devastating effect on bob. That is when bob went off on his own to embark on a strange new life. We wanted to know how and why trouble seemed to be his traveling companion. When we return more mysteries and more question for robert durst and a peek at his new life on the lost coast.
