Late today after an intense daylong search, officials made the grim announcement that the body of the little nebraska boy had been recovered. He was snatched while wading in a lagoon at disney worlds grand floridian resort, as witnesses watched in horror. Nbcs Kerry Sanders now with late details. Reporter a nonstop search from the air, on the water, and deep into the lake today, where divers and technicians used underwater sonar hoping to find signs of life. And also the gator that attacked. But after 16 agonizing hours, heartbr the Orange County Sheriffs Office dive team located what is believed to be the remains of the deceased, a 2yearold. Reporter its this beach where lane was grabbed by an alligator believed to be between four and seven feet long. Witnesses told police they saw the toddler dragged under while his parents and a staff lifeguard tried to snatch him back. While posted signs at the lake say no swimming, the Orange County sheriff said the boy and his father were wading only a foot from the shore. Theres no sign to suggest alligators live in the lagoon. Should there be signs warning, beware, alligators . One of the things that theyll work with, Walt Disney World will work with the Florida Wildlife Commission to make a determination, what is the best practice they can employ. Reporter today wildlife officials pulled five alligators from the lake and examined them for any evidence they were involved in the [000 02 59;00] so far, nothing. Alligator attacks on humans are extremely rare, even in a state like florida, where there have been only 23 People Killed since 1948. A spokesman for the Walt Disney Company released a statement that says in part, there are no words to convey the profound sorrow we feel for the family and their unimaginable loss. I have been on those waters and those beaches, and ive never seen a sign. Reporter tonight wildlife Officials Says disney has a program to remove alligators from their lakes. Theyve routinely taken out alligators in the lakes apt the property at large. I havent heard of any taken out recently. But theye mention of alligators on the signs to keep people out of the water . Other hotels in the area do mention alligators. A disney spokesperson tells nbc news alligators in florida are a fact of life, and theyre in their habitat. With so many children around this area i dont have the answers to that right there. Those are all good questions. I dont have those answers. Reporter the Walt Disney World resort is about the size of san francisco. The theme park pumps about 18 billion into floridas economy each year. One study found 1 in 50 employed floridians had jobs tied to disney. Safety is a priority at resorts. A final burst of data transmitted by the plane suggested a fire in the nose. But its not at all clear what went wrong.
