In what could be winters last big blast. Storm team 4 meteorologist Doug Kammerer has an up to the minute forecast on the weather conditions for us in a minute. A lot of kids who didnt go to school today can look forward to a fourday weekend. Every major School District will be closed tomorrow including prince georges anne arundel, alexandria arlington, fairfax, loudoun, Prince William county schools all will be closed. D. C. Schools will be closed as well. You can find all the closings and delays on our website and scrolling at the bottom of your screen and at our nbcwashington app. We have Live Team Coverage tonight on the dangerous Road Conditions out there because of this latest storm. We start with doug in the storm center. The feellike temperatures for a lot of people will be negative territory during what youre calling winters last blast. I hope that isnt wishful thinking. I really think it is yeah. Were going to get cold again in the month of march . Maybe. But will we see temperatures that stay in the 20s again like tomorrow . I dont think so. Take a look at the last 12 hours on storm team 4 radar. You notice all of the moisture moving up. We went from rain to sleet and then over to snow. Most locations picking up around six inches including around the d. C. Metro area. Some locations back to the west Frederick County virginia and maryland picking up close to a foot of snow. Now its the cold thats setting in. It will be one cold night. A windchill advisory for areas in the west. Loudoun county, northern falk eyer. Even if we dont have that advisory s be a very cold morning when you wake up. 15 d. C. 7 gaithersburg feels like 1 in hagerstown. The wind is starting to pick up as the colder air moves in. Friday headlines, a rough a. M. Commute for sure. If you are driving in a lot of rough roads, frigid day tomorrow. And finally warmer yes. We will finally get warmer over the next couple of days. We have Live Team Coverage. Veronica johnson has spoke to vdot today about its expectations for Road Conditions tomorrow morning. The roads after the storm stopped a couple of hours ago, theyre still pretty bad. Reporter they are still pretty bad. Thats the thing. This is the intersection of spelt run and lee highway. And in fact the sidewalks are faring a lot better than the actual road. Still covered with a lot of slush around here as we made our way over to this area. This is what most of the roads actually look like. In fact i stood out here just a couple of minutes ago. Yes, theyre slushy. Ive got some infrared thermometer where ive been taking a temperature reading. Watching the road surface temperature continue to drop. Right now actually at around 35 36 degrees. But again, it will continue to drop as we head up the road toward the north there for the 66 on ramp. You can see cars making their way through, yes, no issues theyre going at a fairly decent speed, too. But i think the real problem as we head southbound down lee highway tomorrow morning will be the inclines the ramps, the hills, because this slush, its going to freeze. Its going to get slick at the very least. How are roads going to fare through virginia tomorrow morning . Varks vdot hopes to accomplish a lot. We hope to have all the roads passable by tomorrow morning. Once they are plowed then well treat it with a salt sand mix. Were still going to continue to have nearly 4,000 trucks like we had at the height of the storm. Reporter and one thing that Michael Murphy from vdot stresses is that even when those crews get out, clear the main roads, even if you do see plaqueblack top and it looks slick or shiny, watch your speed, watch your braking. There could be a lot of black ice on even the main roads. Veronica johnson reporting from arlington, virginia. One of the reasons that the snows still packed on those roads has to do with the consistency in how this storm really came in doesnt it . Reporter exactly. We started early this morning, of course with rain. The crews had a hard time keeping anything chemical wise on the road. Then we had the slushy snow then the drier snow that came on top of that. Thats one reason why i think were seeing a lot of slick spots on area roads. Its really getting more and more exactcompacted as the night goes on. That could lead to many issues tomorrow morning. Thats right. So whats happening elsewhere around the area lets go to chris lawrence. We continue our Live Team Coverage now in Silver Spring maryland. Chris, i know a lot of folks just tired of being cooped up inside especially if theyve got kids. Reporter tired . They past tired like ten hours ago. This was fullon get me out of the house, i dont care how cold it is. Theyve been counting the hours, which were crawling by. And then they just couldnt take it one more minute. It gets a little tiring being cooped up all day. Stir crazy. Reporter a serious outbreak of cabin fever. What was it like being cooped up all day . Annoying. Very annoying because i had a lot of energy. Reporter her dad can attest to that. Kids are home all day long no school. It gets a little bit tight. Reporter so they grabbed marcos leash and took a frigid stroll through Silver Spring. Came out just to see what was open. Nothings open. Reporter we did find one restaurant. But not whole foods or even the local cvs. We need some food and we wanted to check the grocery store. I was trying to get some snacks for my wife and i. Maybe some juices and gatorade. Reporter come on, even that cod have waited till tomorrow. And i wanted to get out of the house. Reporter clearly. Good news is most stores are going to be back open tomorrow. But nearly everyl in the area thats still closed. Look continuing our Team Coverage is news 4s shomari stone. Shomari talked to people who have been dealing with the slick roads in prince georges county. Reporter well chris, i have seen salt trucks and, you know a lot of folks out here. And i have still seen people slipping and sliding despite all the snow trucks and snow plows on 92 295, the off ramps and a lot of people need to slow down because some folks are still getting in accidents. What was it like on the roadway . Quite messy. Reporter Robert Mahoney has had a rough drive home in prince georges county. After todays snowstorm. I would think the roads would be much clearer, you know with all the trucks you see. Reporter except theres a problem. The temperature is dropping by the hour. And roadways are freezing in some spots. Take a look. These cars got in an accident on the snow covered 295 off ramp to the wilson bridge. Accidents and frozen roads worry cab drivers. Comemute is going to be crazy tomorrow morning. Reporter we saw salt trucks on interstates as these cars backed up. Weve heard of salt trucks the and plows, this is a dirt truck that is now a snow truck. What do you mean by that . Just load the truck up with snow and dump it off, get it out of the roads. Reporter while crews work overnight, you might be a little surprised. Robert mahoney wants powder. I love the snow. It doesnt matter to me. I love to drive. Reporter more snow i dont think so quite frankly, im sick of it. Now if you have to travel make sure you give yourself plenty of time. Live in oxon hill im shomari stone. You wont see any metrobuses on the street tonight. Metro suspended bus service at 9 00. It is not expected to resume until 4 00 tomorrow morning. Even thoen,en it will operate on what they call a moderate snow plan. That means businesses will avoid hilly and narrow streets and other areas that might cause a problem. It started skiing then it hit the side of the rail and then went 400 yards. Next thing we knew it came to a halt. We all kind of went forward. It was definitely an experience that well be able to talk about. Only five of the 130 people on board were taken to the hospital. They all have minor injuries. Weather also created havoc on air travel all over. According to flightaware. Com, 150 flights scheduled to leave bwi marshall were canceled. We talked to one traveler whose flight landed safely but took longer than normal because of the weather. We circled the airport for, i think they said it was about 45 minutes, trying to get a spot in line to come land. Then when we finally landed we sat on the runway for another hour or so. Snow did not stop some maryland lawmakers from heading to work today. They talked about a bill that was introduced after a news 4 iteam investigation. The legislation could affect any new home buyers in the state. Our report showed how some viewers had their entire down payment seized on potential new homes after they lost their financing. The bill aims to keep that from happening to other people but opponents worry that the legislation is just too broad. Just very simply takes out the ability of anyone to buy a new home for cash. We work with good faith with them and think that we can come up with a resolution and something that will protect our consumers. Well update you when the bill goes to a vote and the iteam has more on how home buyers can protect themselves right now with expert legal advice.
