But we knew this was on our schedule for a long time. Ive got to prepare for it, and sometimes football is about playing when youre not quite 100 . Guys are going to have to backel up, strap it up, because giants are in the same boat we are. Were both 12 and its a very important game for both of us in the nfc east. And so somebody has got to strap up. A lot of guys will fight through it and play hard. Reporter its going to be really interesting to see how kirk cousins performs. And for the nationals tonight, i think were looking okay there, too. Once again, could see some areas of drizzle. Temperatures, though, will be on the cool side in both locations. So take that jacket, take that sweatshirt, whatever it is you need. Ill have the rest of the forecast, including that weekend. Wait until you see this. Coming up. Looking forward too it, doug. Calling it quits. Attorney general eric holder stepping down after six years on the job. And a search warrant has been unsealed in the case against Charles Severance. Its giving us some new details on how the police zeroed in on him as the suspect in three murders in alexandria. Youre watching news4 at 6 00. Tonight, attorney general eric holder has announced he is resigning as the attorney general. He was one of the president s first cabinet picks. His six years in office have had their share of controversy from the fast and furious gun program to the nsa surveillance scandal. Holder has also fought for civil rights and Voting Rights. In the months ahead, he will leave department of justice, but i will never i will never leave the work. I will continue to serve and try to find ways to make our nation even more true to its founding ideals. Nbc news justice correspondent Pete Williams with us now, following eric holder for a very long time. Pete, eric holder has had lots of ups, downs, throw it up against the wall, what sticks . What do you think . This is no surprise he decided not to serve out the full two terms in office. He was one of the president s original cabinet members. It was pretty clear he was going to leave before the midterm elections, so that no one can say he left after the mid terms because he didnt like the outcome of the elections and the possible change in senate control. So the only real question here was what day and what hour would he decide this . Now he did say hes going to stay until his successor is confirmed. Hes the fourth longest serving attorney general. If he stays well into december, which he probably will be, then hell become the thirdlongest serving. But as you say, i think at one point he might have been tempted to leave, especially when things were particularly difficult between him and congress over the irs investigation, the fast and furious botched gun tracing operation by atf. And he became sort of the favorite target for republican critics of this administration. But i think one thing that energized him and gave him a second win was the u. S. Supreme courts decision, in essence gutting the Voting Rights act that gave him a whole new mission to try to make sure the nations civil rights laws, whats remaining of them, are strictly in force. So hes going to stay until his successor is confirmed. But congress is so divided. Any idea when that might be, and who might that be . Well, the who well have to wait and see. There are lots of names already floating around. And i dont know how tempting this job will be f some, because youre only going to serve for two years, and youre going to go through a punishing confirmation. But it seems while im sure that republicans are already saying theyll give the nominee very close scrutiny, i cant believe that the senate will just completely stiff the administration and not confirm an attorney general at a time when were under increased terror threats and there are lots of very serious issues to work on. Its going to take a while before it irons outs. Yes, indeed. Thanks, pete. We appreciate it. My pleasure. You can see more reaction on holders resignation coming up on nbc nightly news with brian williams. That begins right after this broadcast. All eyes on kirk cousins, his stellar performance against the eagles on sunday. See him warming up on its field. Big game tonight for the skins taking on the giants. Dont go anywhere this is the xfinity sports desk, brought to you by xfinity, your home for the most live sports. So doug and i think giants are going to stick it up and the redskins are going to roll tonight. I think they might roll, but not because the giants stink it up. Because i think theyre a better team. What do you guys think . If you asked us this question before last weekend, i would say the redskins had this one easy. But after the giants performance against the texans, theyre definitely picking up some momentum here. They have a new offense. A new system theyre running with the new offensive coordinator. It seems like eli manning is figuring this out. This could be a difficult day, i think, for the redskins defense. The redskins are a better team, first and foremost, in my opinion, than the giants. But its going to be interesting to see. Speaking of players on this redskins defense tonight, jason hatcher, sources tell me that he will play tonight. He was out on the field earlier today. He was with the trainer, larry heck, checking out what he was calling a pulled hamstring. They said he was okay. We can see him out there hugging bruce allen, general manager, defensive coordinator, jim haslett. Jason hatcher, definitely needed out on this defense tonight. Heres the thing. This team has three days of practice, and film study. Both teams, the giants and the redskins. So this is going to be like we said, a very interesting matchup, given the short week of practice and preparation for both squads. But the injuries, they become, you know, ginormous for the redskins. Definitely the biggest problem. But Desean Jackson back in the lineup tonight. Complaining about those shoulder injuries all week long. Practiced very, very lightly. But he will be playing tonight. Yeah. We talked about Desean Jackson, jason hatcher, all these guys looking forward to this meeting against the giants and the big time matchup. Division rivals. Both teams come in at one and two. Thursday night game of the week, nfl, heres the problem. The skins or not the problem. The skins looking to go 20 at home with a win tonight. The players, they dont necessarily like these short weeks in the nfl, mainly because it takes a toll on their bodies. I feel like crap. I mean, its extremely difficult. But, i mean, both teams feel the same way. I would think. Yeah, its very tough. Just got to keep pushing forward, you know. Nobody in the league likes thursday night games. I dont know why they have them. It sucks as players. But its part of the game. We have to endure the schedule. But well be fine. All right. No one likes it, but it doesnt matter. Its time to play. Kirk cousins will make his sixth career start tonight. This past sunday, threw for over 400 yards, three touchdowns. However, late interception and final offense of the series put a damper on an otherwise stellar performance by kirk. He is trying to improve upon his play from last week. You know, as a quarterback, if there is any doubt in the other ten guys in the huddle looking at me, can this guy get it done for us, can he move the ball, ive already failed. I just think kirk is doing the best he can, stepping in, like i said. Taking advantage of the opportunity. So, you know, we need that. We cant afford for that position to drop down. I think hes going to do anything and everything he needs to do to get the ball in the players hands that need to make plays to help this team win. All right. So it will be great to see if kirk cousins can string together two good teams against his sixth start as a washington redskin. But not only do we have a big redskins game, weve got the nats, who are busy over in nats park playing against the mets. Double header. Right to the first game in this day night double header. Were going to pick this one up in the bottom of the fifth. Nationals down 42. Two on for Michael Taylor and he rips this ball into left field. Two runners will head in to score. The nats tie this game at 44. Stay that way up until the top of the eighth. Tyler clifford on for the nats. Matt past third. Chris young on second. Bryce happiers arm, the throw is off line. And the nats up 54. In the bottom of the ninth, its now 74. The nats with a chance to tie. But harper, hes at the plate with two on. Its a deep fly, but its caught in front of the warning track. The nationals, they lose the first game of this series. Or at least the day night double header, i should say. 74 is your final score. Back here at fedexfield. Things that you want to keep an eye on, and tonights game against the giants. Kirk, can he finish a game and get the team a victory. Also, back in the sack. The team had ten sacks against the jaguars. None last week against the eagles. Can they improve that number this week. Finally, deangelo hall. He is out. Can the rookie step in his shoes and have a big game. And special teams. Can they get out of this hole and improve. This should be something you want to check out tonight. Kickoff at 8 25. Looking forward to it. Jason, i want to know if you were just texting your girlfriend a minute ago. No, i was busted he was checking wait a couple minutes. Tune in at 11 00 for that answer.
