These are a part of the mission of the d. C. Greens company. And tonight the organization wants you to eat well in support of that mission. Eun yang is here to exp. Up with some area top chefs to serve a family style meal to support the efforts to help people in our area eat more healthfully. Thanks so much for being here today. Thank you. Tell us about d. C. Greens. Your mission is to build a healthy food system. How do you even do that . We use the power of partnerships to support Food Education, food access and food policy here in the district. And one of the programs were particularly proud of is the d. C. Produce plus program where anybody who is on medicaid in the city or who receives any kind of federal benefit can go to any of the farmers markets in the city, any of the 55 farmers markets and automatically get 10 in checks to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables. Its been an Incredible Program and its launching on june 1st. Wonderful. And, chef, everyone talks about how important it is to eat seasonally and eat fresh produce. And theyve been talking about it for a while now, but can you really do this at home without spending a whole lot of time in the kitchen . You yeah. Of course. Obviously everybody can eat healthy. Local is always better, but thats not always available which is why d. C. Greens is doing amazing job. We pick this up from our farm. Its beautiful. You want to see what were doing today . Yeah, tell me what youre going to make with these beautiful items here. We are going to slice the strawberries. I dont think about cooking them. We have some goat cheese, this is from my friend at pipe dreams. What kind of cheese is that . Goat cheese. Fresh goat cheese. Then we have some balm that we already put there. We have some coreander blossoms, some sweet pea blossoms. You can eat all of this food. Of course. Everything is edible. And its all district, which is amazing. Some baby kale. Dress with a little salt, little olive oil, beautiful vinegar from my friend. Okay, just a little vinegar. Awesome, fresh, local, little pepper. Even the dressing doesnt involve that many components. Absolutely not. It needs a dress. Got ya. Then were going to plate it salad here. Wow, so pretty too. Its beautiful. And so when you talk about the educating, about telling people that they can have access to these sorts of foods, whats the most important way to reach people so they can know that they have these options . Well, whats been amazing about the produce plus program is we have a number of Community Champions that are produce plus excited about this program that theyre really part of our team. And theyre the ones that are out in the Community Letting people know about this incredible benefit that is available to them. Miss beatrice is one of our champions, she pulled an entire city bus off to come to the markets. We are so lucky to be in d. C. With so many incredible markets. The fact the program is in place makes these kinds of meals accessed and prepared by anyone in the district regardless of income level. And when you talk about a system, is it topdown, circular . How does it work to make sure everyone is getting access and understanding that eating healthy is so important . Its not just for people who can afford going to a whole foods or going to some of the more expensive farmers markets. Its really a deep partnership in the district. What were doing is were working towards a city where Food Education is on the menu in every classroom, where doctors are writing prescriptions for fresh frts matter of course and where zip code doesnt determine life expectancy. You know, that really means that the schools are partners, the City Government is partners, the Health Clinics are partners, our amazing chefs are partners, theyre coming out tonight for the spring dig to cook for us. Well, you know its right over there, we got cupcakes in the house cupcakes well have salad first. I dont know. Not necessarily. Well, were going to have more on that coming up, but first we have some new information from that hearing involving bill cosby this morning. We now know how a woman accusing him of Sexual Assault will be heard from in a preliminary hearing. And preserving history, how you can help share a veterans breaking news just into the live desk. An arrest in a Jewelry Store robbery and shootout that happened in Fairfax County. Were just learning that police have arrested 24yearold Timothy Frank william Timothy Franklin, both of maryland. Arrested at Newark Airport apparently trying to leave the country. You may remember this Jewelry Store robbery on saturday afternoon where someone confronted the accused robbers coming out of the dubai Jewelry Store at the Brookfield Shopping Center and shots were fired, an innocent person was hit by a bullet in that exchange between Police Officers in Fairfax County and the gunman. That persons injuries were not serious. At this point again were learning two men have been taken into custody. At this point Fairfax County police are trying to have them extradited back to Fairfax County where they can continue the investigation and those men will face charges. Thats the latest from the live desk. Thank you, aaron. Bill cosby is in court this morning to answer to charges by a woman who sayse 2004. Nbcs Janet Shamlian is outside the courtroom in norristown, pennsylvania, and has the latest for us. Reporter a big day for bill cosby, a preliminary hearing to determine whether this felony case of Sexual Assault will go to trial, and will rely heavily on the words of his accuser Andrea Constand. Constand claims cosby drugged her and sexually assaulted her at his home in 2004. Constand and cosby settled a civil suit in 2006, but last year a federal judge made portions of their depositions public at which point the current District Attorney filed these felony charges. Bill cosby tried to have the case thrown out saying that he had a nonprosecution agreement when he gave that deposition, but the Appeals Court denied that. Couple of things could happen. Cosby could waive the hearing, at which point it would be set for trial immediately. That seems the least likely on could decide theres not enough evidence to proceed, however the bar is fairly low here for them to go forward see Andrea Consta take the stand, however she would be subject to a rigorous crossexamination by cosbys attorneys. Theres also the possibility that prosecutors will only let stand the words of her deposition now ten years ago in 2006. Janet shamlian, nbc news, norristown, pennsylvania. In decision 2016 another political poll and another dismal review for the president ial frontrunners, at least based on their likability. Take a look at the numbers there. 63 of the people in the nbc News Survey Monkey poll out this morning said they either hate or dislike donald trump. Hillary clinton doesnt do much better, 58 of those surveyed said the same thing about her. This mornings poll has a margin of error of plus ornu ask the veterans in your life what their experiences were like. Get a front row seat on history. Thats a Public Service message asking you to tell a story of a veteran in your life through the veterans history project of the library of congress. And here now with more on that project is bob patrick who directs the program that strives to collect and preserve all histories and documentary materials from veterans from world war i and Everything Else thats happened since then. Absolutely. Welcome, thanks for coming. Thank you. I understand that the project already has 100,000 stories in the bank. And where do those stories come from . The congressional history mandate collect and preserve wartime histories of veterans. We depend on the public to do this. Sit down with the veterans and their lives do oral history interview of about 30 minutes or longer to tell their story about their Human Experience of war. These have really come from across the organization, from individuals, organizations and involved. Most of those people who call, are they Family Members or the veterans themselves . Generally its the Family Members or interviewers who know a veteran in their community that want to have this conversation with them. But its a great project for families to get involved with. So what kind of stories are you looking for . Suppose a soldier thinks mie experience wasnt a big deal. A lot of people think youre looking for war heroes, but . Everybodys story is important. From the cockpit to the mess hall, anyone who comes into the military has an experience, has a story to tell and contributes to this whole story of the Human Experience of serving in the military. News 4 talked to a local veteran and he decided to share his story. We have some pictures of him. His name is newt cornhiezer, i believe, how do you get veterans talking . Well, it really becomes a conversation. Some of the older veterans like particularly world war ii veterans, you kind of start the co for many of them that story is so wired into them that sometimes half an hour or 45 minutes later you ask the next question. But its really kind of walking them back through their life and their military experience. So the stories youve collected already, are they available to the public to watch, listen to, read . Absolutely. The veterans history project has a website with the library of congress. And we have a database where people can go online and see the 100,000 weve collected and about a quarter of those are actually digitized. Youre a retired u. S. Colonel, have you told your story . I have told my story. I served in the military from 1971 to 1999. Its a story of primarily the cold war but i was proud to tell it. Have you called up your friends from the military who you served with to say come on in and lets do this . Ive got all my buddies lined up and already started interviewing them already. Are these interviews being done all over the country . They are. Every state in the union has gotten involved. Congress has promoted it across the country, so we have gotten it all across the cotr somebody where should they call, how should they find out how to share . Go to the website and do a search on veterans history project, download one of our field kits. It gives you all the instructions you need to sit down and have this conversation, record this conversation through an oral history with the veteran in your life. Or if the veterans no longer with us, capture photographs, letters, diaries, those kind of original materials, send them to the library of congress and make them part of the veterans history project. So wonderful. Good time to talk about it just before memorial day. Great time to talk to your veteran. Thank you. My pleasure. Angie. Thank you, barbara. Losing weight when youre surrounded by cup cakes like this, youre here to spill your secrets about your weight loss success. Welcome, so great to see you. Thank you. Good to see you too. Well, i want to start with you, kathrine, i know you dropped 60. 60 pounds of pregnancy weight. Right. Sympathy weight. You tend to gain weight as well. I have two sisters, i can identify with that perfectly. But you literally did this by putting one foot in front of the other. Right. We are not, you know, big exercise people. And we wanted to do something we knew wed stick to. And we thought if we join a gym, were going to quit probably in the next month or so. But we knew we could walk. And we knew that it was easy and we could do it. So we spuk to six miles a day. We dont walk very fast, three miles per hour, so two hours. Instead of watching two of our Favorite Television shows on the couch we ended up on the treadmill and watched them. It went by quite quickly took us around nine months to shed the weight. We didnt really change our diet. We still ate our foods, but we walked six miles, very slow pace. Some people ask us, thats a lot, how can you do that . The truth is its not that hard. Kathrine said we walked very leisurely and viewed it as relaxation at the end of the day. It wasnt something we dreaded. If we joined the gym we would stick to it. But when we walk and sometimes we go on walks with each other outside the neighborhood, its time to catch up, time to relax. Actually look forward to it. Key was to be consistent too. We did it at first seven days a week and now we only do it three or four times a week now. I love the tip of watching your favorite movies and marathon, can go by like that. You also say weigh yourself daily, do not fear the scale. Yes. I think part of the reason people dont want to get on the scale is we dont want to see what it has to say, but the thing is if you look at it every day or regularly, you wont have that oh, my god moment, what happened, three weeks. You never want to be surprised. Its true in anything. When you want to look at your credit cards, bank account or business, you want to keep yourself accountable, your numbers hold you accountable. We started not looking at the scale as the thing we dreaded and feared but as a tool to help us lose weight and keep us accountable. Definitely power in numbers.
