The account then went dark until this tweet that says, we regret the mistaken retweet was posted. These attempts to lessen the enthusiasm of the inauguration are shameful and wrong. Reporter White House Communications director sean spicer brought up the issue at a press briefing he claimed many news images had been taken in ways to minimize the size of crowds on the mall during the inauguration. This was the largest audience to ever witness and inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe. There are maybe thousands of people that werent in there to be represented in that photograph. Reporter judy gilbert and her family were on the mall for President Trumps inauguration. She thinks any gaps in the crowd were not due to a lack of attendees but problems with access. I also know that there were hundreds, maybe 2,000 people that werent allowed in the mall because of security. And they were being blocked by the disrupt group. We were here both days. We believe for sure there was more people here today. That was Jackie Benson reporting. This weekends events are making headlines around the country and world. Thats right. C. But all over the world. Lets see what this family from canada had to say. Your new president is very divisive. Late afternoon into the evening hours, maybe just a little bit of light rain. Then tomorrow youre going to need an umbrella, raincoat, rain boots, and a poncho. Well have rain likely throughout just the entire day on monday. Could be heavy at times in the morning. The new timing coming up in a few minutes. Well, it looks like some in russia are embracing president donald trump. Some russians threw some parties to celebrate the inauguration. The u. S. Government has accused russia of interfering with the election to help accusation russia has denied. But some are welcoming the new administration. Trump is a real american, and of course he will be proamerican, but it doesnt mean he should be antirussian. Well, a spokesperson for the russian leader says putin is ready to meet President Trump but adds that meeting may take months. Well, as expected, saturday night live took a jab at the new president last night. Yeah, while we didnt see alec baldwins portrayal of the new president , snl took a different approach using a fake Vladimir Putin to hit the crowd size of his inauguration. Donald, lets talk as friends. Youre not off to a great start, man. I thought youd be better at this. However, im glad to see so many people showed up to your inauguration. Oh, wait. Thats the womens march. Here is inauguration. At the end of the show, the snl cast paid former president barack obama. They stood in front of a black and white portrait of the president and sang to sir, with love. Were going to get a preview of meet the press. For the first time, to utter a falsehood, why did he do that . It undermines the entire office of the White House Press office. Dont be so overly dramatic about it, chuck. Youre saying its a falsehood. Theyre giving sean spicer, our press secretary, gave alternative facts to that. Wait a minute. Alternative facts . Whoa. Thats counsel already to the president , kellyanne conway, just moments ago on meet the press this morning. She was being asked about White House Press secretary sean spicers comments about the crowd size of fridays inauguration. Joining us now, the moderator of meet the press, chuck todd. Seems like a heated conversation. I didnt get heated. I definitely some deflection and all that stuff. I understand that. I think they feel defensive this morning in general that this happened. I guess the larger question is and what i was trying to get is why. Why do this . It seemed you had a lot to get to. This seemed to be an intentional tactic, so why . I think that its pretty clear to me that the intention is to incite a war with the press. I think they want the foil. I think they this this helps them, that it deepens their connection to their supporters. But it is a tough way to acquire political capital. Because it is sort of resistance meets resistance meets resistance and youre in a neverending loop. This is not a way to get his agenda passed. Its mind boggling. And coming on the heels of an inaugural address that filled with missed opportunities. I think theyve had a rough weekend. One of the things that was kind of conference was that the press secretary said, this is what you guys should be writing and covering. Thats kind of a bold statement to make. Well, you know, you dont get to decide that. Look, its a reflection of Donald Trumps views of the press. Hes never viewed it i mean, he sort of views if its a good press if i get good coverage. In new york and the tabloids, its sort of sport to have fights with the press. It does become tough when you do it from that oval office. It feels small. It felt like why get into, as some people like to call it, turn down a street that ends up being a culdesac and youre just running in circles. Like a thin skin kind of thing maybe. Who knows. Lets say youre him and youve been told, thats a mistake, and getting in a fighth getting in a fight with john mccain is a mistake. He comes back and says, im president of the united states. Thats true. So the question is, did he learn the wrong lesson . Was his victory a victory for him, or it was just an ultra repudiation of the clintons . I think he may misread his victory that it was so much of a repudiation on her that theyre still looking for a little more unity than hes wanting to give. When we talk about unity, we saw what happened here in washington and across the nation and even across the globe with the marches. Yesterday at that news conference, there werent any questions or responses to the march. This morning we did hear from a Top White House adviser. They released a statement. Did kellyanne respond or give any type of statement on the behalf of the president . No, but we did get a tweet from the president already. He had a much different tone than the initial statement on this. The new tweet says, you know, i may not agree with them, but i love the celebrates democracy. Pitch perfect. Maybe a day late. So look, this is, i think, perhaps well look at this and say growing pains. We may look back in a hundred days and say missed opportunity. Yeah, well, ill be watching the show coming up at 10 30 to see that exchange. Thats coming up in about ten minutes. See meet the press every sunday right here on news 4 at 10 30. We have this area of rain well to our south and along the southeast coast. Much of this is going to pass east of us. The area of rain down in the Mississippi Valley will be arriving here around 5 00 p. M. Or so. Offandon light rain into the evening hours. After midnight tonight, the rain will start picking up in intensity. From 6 00 a. M. Tomorrow through noontime, some moderate to heavy downpours, especially north and west of the metro area through the morning hours. Then some passing light to moderate downpours through the metro area, after that through noontime. Might get ponding of road water and blustery winds gusting to around 30 miles an hour for the morning commute. Likely no flooding. Probably only going to get maybe an inch of rain. Then the rain may switch over to a little bit of wet snow here in this lavender area. Northern shenandoah valley, panhandle of west virginia. A wet monday commute. Temperatures upper 40s i winds. The rain taxpayers off in the afternoon as we hover in the low 50s. Wet roads all day long. Youll need an umbrella all day long tomorrow. Then finally drying out tuesday afternoon. Sunshine returns. Highs mid50s. May make it up to around 60 degrees. Talk about unjanuary. On wednesday, lots of sunshine. Then it starts getting chilly. January starts to regain its dignity as a winter month. Might get subfreezing temperatures friday, saturday, sunday, and monday welcome back. Here are the four things you need to know on this sunday morning. Mt. Vernon Police Investigating a shooting. Around 1 00 this morning, a teen boy was shot. The boy is in stable condition. No one has been arrested. President trump is responding to yesterdays marches. In the last hour, he took to twitter writing, quote, peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy. Even if i dont always agree, i recognize the rights of people to express their views. White House Press Secretary sean spicer hitting back at at media for suggesting the inauguration attendance was smaller than those in the past. And the south trying to pick up the pieces after deadly st m storms rolled through. Now Severe Weather has killed 11 people in central georgia. Its still unclear if tornadoes were the cause. Its foggy, or is the fog lifting . The fog is pretty much gone. It stays to the north maybe another hour or two. Light rain likely tonight. Then some moderate to heavy rain for the morning commute on monday. Could have some ponding of water and blustery winds. The winds diminish on monday as does the rain during the afternoon. It all ends on monday night. Welcome sunshine after that for the balance of the week. All right. Thanks, tom. Thanks so much for joining us. Meet the press is next. More news thats about to break.
