And strength of a survivor. She speaks out for the First Time Since that day. I know that my mom, dad, bryan, emmy, beckett and zack are in a much better place and ill be able to see them again. Remembering her family as the Community Comes together to support her today, sunday, july 13th, 2014. And welcome to today on this sunday morning. Im erica hill. And im lester holt. We want to begin now with our top story. The escalating crisis in the middle east. Overnight, israeli troops led a brief raid into gaza. Fears mounted that it could turn into an offensive on the ground. Amy is live in gaza for us this morning. Reporter weve said it time and time again, this isnt a water between two equal sides. Fighting against a palestinian militant group. But the concern is the kbroeing casualty toll here on the ground. Today, there is indication that a Ground Invasion is just within a matter of hours as it warned people to leave. Daylight in the scope of israels overnight attacks become clear. Many palestinians waking up to scenes of destruction. Isra israels military dropped leaflets. Translator we are being attacked by land air and sea. Reporter it was a close call in telaviv last night as well. Hamas promised it was going to attack israel and it delivered on its word. Waiting was the Defense System iron dome intercepting them in the skies above telaviv and saving lives. Overnight israel raid add rocket launching site in gaza. Residents feared this was the beginning of the Ground Invasion. Many fled, but it wasnt. Israeli troops are still on the border, israel intensified its air strikes, targeting the home of the Islamic Police chief. He survived. But many people died, including women and children from his family. Hospitals struggled to cope with the injuried. For some like this doctor and his family, the violence has become unbearable. Today, they were among 300 americans evacuated by the u. N. And the u. S. Embassy. 3 billion every year. I feel like theyre putting us in danger. Reporter they were here on Summer Vacation visiting family when the war broke out. Leaving was a hard choice. My heart is staying back home. My hearts staying in gaza. Reporter an escape to safety for one American Family that very few palestinians in gaza will have. Now erica, the United Nations is calling on both sides to exercise resnt in place a cease fire as quickly as possible. But neither side shows signs of backing down. They are saying they are prepared for a Ground Invasion and caught in the middle are the civilians where the death toll continues to rise every day. Erica . Thank you. David gregory is moderator of meet the press. Good morning. Good morning. Like to tee up the conversation with some of your conversation about the crisis of the middle east. Lets play it. The United States and the rest of the members of the Security Council have a moral and legal responsibility to put an end to this and regret the fact that they havent taken action. Thats often the call. Where is the u. S. What about the iranian role here. They have long been seen as a benefactor of hamas. Yes, and they dont deny that. They denied actually providing weapons fired into israel. But israel claims they indeed are the source of those weapons. This is certainly more moral support from hamas from a part of the world thats influential. But the administration right now has been pretty strongly behind israel. Theres high anxiety about a potential ground operation. But never theless, i think israel feels like it has the backing from the United States because its responding to a threat from hamas. And they may well take advantage of the opportunity to go in on the ground and take out the sites. When we saw this back in 2012, then secretary of state Hillary Clinton helped broker the cease fire deal. Would the u. S. Try to do the same in this case . I think theres ever reason the United States would. Youve seen a failed policy in terms of negotiating a peace process. In this moment and ill be speaking to the mideast envoy this morning. There is real fear that youve gone from bad to now worse. United states does not want to see a further unraveling especially with everything going on in iraq. Its a very tense time. Well look for more of your interview and well join you a bit later on. Thanks very much. Turning now to the Severe Weather system in the middle of the country. Strong storms expected to hit the mit west today. Theres also a bizarre cold snap in the forecast. Theres some talk of a polar vortex. Dylan is following all this. Its fun to call it the polar vortex because it will be unseasonably cold. First, lets look at the flooding we saw in illinois yesterday. Look at how high up this water came. People and residents were wading through the water. They saw inches of rain yesterday. In dixon, illinois, a little bit further away, look as these storms were trying to gather. You saw that swirling rotation in the dark clouds there. We didnt have any confirmed tornados, but it was very ominous looking. We do have the chance of some of those storms today producing isolated tornados. You can see moving through Central Illinois and indiana right now. The best chance of seeing the stronger storms today is a little further east than they were yesterday. Southern illinois and back into pennsylvania. We could see damaging wind gusts and hail and isolated tornados. Then it expands a lot into monday. From new york city right back into arkansas. Thats what well focus on tomorrow along with the colder air thats going to move in. Its the same setup but not cold enough to be a polar vortex. But it is going to be fairly cold chltd look at some of our temperatures here. Duluth about 68 degrees. Temperatures only around 69 on monday in chicago. So it certainly is going to cool down. Well talk more about that. Turn now to the powerful words of a sole survivor of that massacre in texas last week. The 15yearold that helped track down the man charged with the killings spoke out for the first time at a Memorial Service for her family. Reporter 15yearold cassidy stay showed remarkable strength. Im really thankful for all of the people that have been praying if he more and keeping me and my family in their thoughts. Reporter cassidy is the only one to survive the attack at her spring texas home. Im on a Straight Path for recovery. Reporter police say she was shot execution style along with her parents and four siblings. Cassidy survived. The suspected gunman Ronald Haskell was reportedly looking for his exwife when he broke into his former sisterinlaws home. She had the presence of mind to remain quiet and play dead. Reporter then cassidy called 911. Police say she saved her grandparents believed to be the shooters next part. In court, haskells knees buc e buckled as he heard the murder charges against him. A dramatic contrast to the resill yans of a teenage girl. I know that my mom, dad, bryan, emily, beckett and zach are in a much better place. Reporter with her family gone, a Community Steps in. For tood, nbc news, los angeles. Right now lets get you caught up. Da na is here with those for us. Good morning everyone. Took place just outside chicago. They gathered and werent supposed to move until the bulls got closer. They doctor. They moved. To finish off the events, they hurled tomatoes at each other. Id look that up just to make sure. I cant believe we missed that. We were off yesterday. Yeah, i know. We could have been there. We could have been and those bulls look faster. First, theyre older, mostly male, and they tried to hide from the authorities. Agents used atvs and a helicopter to find them. They are starting to see fewer immigrants now. Weve seen a rise in the number of soccer fans in the United States. With t u. S. Run a distant memory, were wondering if anyone here still really cares. Its one of the most watched sporting events on the planetwi expected to tune in today. Thats an audience about eight times that of the super bowl. With the u. S. Long gone from the competition, is anyone in this country paying attention. I know argentina is till in it. Im not going to be watching the world cup. Germany is playing. Germanys in it. Argentina. Thats the bad thing. Argentina features arguably the worlds best player in messi. Then a defeat that reduced many in the soccer crazed country to tears. I think argentina are the underdogs in not only the way germany dismantled brazil, but them being the most consistent World Cup Team weve ever seen. Some are calling it the game of two popes. But dont expect a papal party. According to the vatican, the two dont have plans to watch together. As for the devastating home squad, it was insult to injury on saturday with brazil losing to the netherlands in the battle for third place. The fact that these brazilians are going to have to go to the cathedral of soccer and watch one of their bitter rivals play against germany is going to be tough to stomach. Lebron james wanted to get his deal wrapped up and finished so he could leave for brazil to watch the finals. He said he believes germany has the better team. Different from lester and erica. Residents in the midwest are cleaning up today after strong storms brought heavy rain and lightning. Another round of Severe Weather is expected today. And the sole survivor of a deadly massacre in texas speaking out for the first time in a Memorial Service to honor family members. Hundreds of Community Members came out to support her. Still to come, camping goes high tech. Were going to see a way to keep our phones charged even when youre in the middle of nowhere. It involves flame. Nothing to be concerned about. And coming up, a story so close to my heart. My brother mike has had a whil wind year paying with the Wounded Warrior softball team. How they are inspiring people across the country. Also ahead, its the final days of the super simple series of chicken. Easy for you to say. This morning, were making barbecue chicken. Believe it or not, you only need five ingredients for this dish. Thats a big chicken. Yeah. Check out the picture after fridays chicken thigh recipe. I dont think thats it. No. Thats the chicken we are making. There we go. That looks so lets see what youre cooking. It is easier than saying it. It is really difficult to say. We had a hard time on the break. Lets begin this half hour, with the lengths some people are going to show the dangerous consequences of leaving a child alone in a hot car. It all comes on the heels of the death of lts Cooper Harris whose dad is charged with murder after police say he left cooper in his suv for hours. 17 children have died this year after being left in hot cars and now outrage is growing online. Were going to talk to one Police Officer about why he put himself in a hot car. 20 minutes in, sweating a whole lot. Its a little hard to see. Reporter for this north texas Police Officer, it was voluntary. I cant imagine being strapped in here with no way to get out at all. Reporter a demonstration to show just what happens in a hot car. Finally after 30 minutes, its too much for the grown man. My bodys telling me to get out. Reporter he leaves with a warning to parents. Pay attention, please. Pay attention. Reporter but the internet is now filled with videos of others putting themselves in danger. I want to know how it feels to be left in a car. Reporter theres North Carolina dad Terry Williams on a sweltering 90 degree day. The next fool on the news talking about you left your kids in the backseat. Reporter his hot car challenge has gone viral. Thats as high as it would go. Reporter the posts come from across the country. I rif in portland, oregon. They can be extreme. This woman brought her children and dog. She posted no one was hurt and that the dog wasnt with them long. The child cant imagine right now what they would be feeling. Reporter putting themselves on the line to show just how hot it can get. Im dripping sweat off of my body. Reporter nbc news, new york. Corporal jessie beater son is with the high land Police Department in texas. How are you doing . We see all of these videos and this one challenge as its being referred to. Thats whats disturbing to a lot of people. That someone would put this out there. Why was it important to you to do this and to put that video out there . Yeah. You know, for me, as a Police Officer, obviously we are extremely focused on safety. For myself, with the way the media has been showing the children that have been left in vehicles, especially with the large media story about the dad that did it, it was important for me to find out for myself how it felt and and be able to put that on for other people to see. I did it in a safe environment, obviously. But for me, thats the reason why i did it. But you wouldnt advocate someone else trying this i would imagine. Yeah, not at all. I know now that ive done it and ive had the experience, i know what it feels like for, you know, 30 minutes. And i definitely wouldnt want other people to do it now that ive experienced it myself. I can see how it can be very dangerous for somebody, especially if they dont have safety precautions with them. So you documented this. A childs body temperature increases at five times the rate of that of an adult. At 20 minutes you say it was rough and breathing was getting harder. What was the most surprising part of this experiment for lack of a better word for you . I think just the rate in which the temperature rose. You know, i started with the air conditioner on full blast just like it would be for a parent driving around with a child and turned the car off and left the child. So i started with it really cool in the car. I thought i was doing pretty good. Five, maybe up to ten minutes it wasnt too bad. But it started getting really about around the 15minute mark. Theres so much talk about awareness these days especially in the wake of the death of little cooper. Do you find theres more awareness that youre seeing, especially in a place like texas where we know how hot it is . I think that parents and caregivers in general are aware. Its kind of like beating a dead horse, but at the same time, in order to consistently get people to think and think and think and even know it might be common sense to get people to Pay Attention over and over and over and over again, i think its very important just for the general message. Again, not advocating going out and doing the hot car challenge. I would ask people not to do that. But the message in general is something especially in texas and other states that it gets super hot, its a good message and something that people need to be reminded of. Appreciate your time this morning thank you. Dylan is out on the plaza letcheck in with her again now. Good morning, everyone. Seems like everybody is celebrating a birthday from orlando. Youre turning how old today . Were turning 70. Im turning 21. Will you come back on your birthday. Heck yeah. Well look for you down the road. Going to see pretty warm temperatures in parts of the country. Its humid too. That humidity will fuel some of the storms. Best chance of strong storms, western new york stretching back into western kentucky. We could see isolated tornadoes but more the hail and damaging wind gusts. We are looking for that to start to spread eastward more tomorrow, expand a little bit, arkansas, to new york city. We could see some of the strong storms. It is going to be chilly. Michigan, 58 degrees in the heart of summer. Thats that cold air surging from the north and it is eventually going to replace the 77 in chicago and by tuesday, chicago should only top out in the 60s. It is going to be very much below average across the north and northeast as we go into early next week. Thats a look at the weather across the country. Heres a peek out your window. Im storm team 4 meteorologist amelia segal. Temperatures 78 degrees. By noon already at 90. A high today of 94. Now most of the day will be dry. Just a slight chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm. But after 8 00 p. M. , thats when well start to see scattered showers and thunderstorms likely across the area. Hot and humid today. Storms are likely tomorrow and tuesday, potentially severe. Hot and humid tomorrow as well and thats your latest forecast. Lester . Coming up next, last minute hotel deals that pro caste nay tors will really love. Were going to tell you how to save big bucks after these im jane and i have copd. Im dave and i have copd. And thats just one online network. Were going to see a lot more making investments into their own original programming. The biggest thing that struck me was the chairman ceo said basically that we are flat form agnostic. In other words, everything is coming together and digital programming has had its strongest year. A lot of people like these new shows. When they come out, all the episode. And a lot of new services are showing up too. You have comedians in cars. Im really intrigued by this for charging your portable electrics. I know its a bit of a contradiction. Let me explain how it works. I think it can be united statse for camping, but naturald dy sd sasters. Its called the biolight. Its a camping stove. So basically you take small twigs and pines and put it inside the stove. This is the actual charging unit. When the fire is made, the heat that generates electricity is captured by this generator. And it puts out a descent charge .
