Im sure everybody has had a full day yesterday at the health and fitness expo. How was your day . Awesome. Lots of people. Every year it gets bigger and bigger and bigger. For people that are joining us this morning, tell us i want to start with you first, brian. What is educirc . What is it it offers the community and why are you all with us at the fitness expo . Educators serving the community. Were a Nonprofit Organization that focuses on Career Development of youth. We focus on after school programs, summer programs but at the end of the day everything we do is focused on the longterm investment and workforce development. And when it comes to nbc 4 weve been working with nbc for a good while. At the health fair were doing a lot of demos. Were working the culinary stage. We also have our race cars that are racing around our students have built in our program. So were really focused on showcasing the benefits of our programs and what our students are able to do. Where is it . Were based in laurel, maryland. Because were also a nationwide focused organization. We have programs in buffalo, new york, starting in San Francisco now this year. But weve been in florida, snarkts chicago, and all around. Theres a key element here because you said this is really primarily about serving youth. Yes. So how is it the youth play an intricate role with the nbc 4 cooking expo . You just mentioned some cooking demos. What is their role in all of this . Every year actually later today here on sunday well have some of our students from our schools come out and do some cooking demonstrations through our yun young innovators programs. We teach students to be innovators in any field, in any industry but with the cooking side theyll be doing somewhere their smoothies and other kinds of great dishes theyve learned throughout the entire year. I love it. Excellent. Thank you so much. Demetria, i want to hear from you. Tell me about because we care. How long have you been in the business . We were just talking about this. Yes. Because we care is a Nonprofit Organization. We have been coming down to the health expo for 28 23 years, and ive been in business now for 28 years. We thank you so much for being such a partner with us. Thank you. We started with the channel 4 health and fitness when they first opened up. It was on a friday. We teach cpr to not just only the older people but we also teach it to the children and also we go out to schools and different organizations. Its a training center. Its a training central. We try to serve the metropolitan maryland area and teach people how to save lives, what to do in case of an emergency and so forth, and not just have to wait on 911 but while theyre waiting what to do, how to recognize signs of distress and what to do. And youll be having some demonstrations and some one on one on how people can really render that aid. Yes. Well be doing cpr demonstrations down there. Also people can come down at any age to come down and get certified in cpr. And we are certified through the American Heart Association. So they will come down, do classes. I will have instructors down there teaching classes. As well as giving them certifications. Okay. Barbara, tell me about the Hearing Loss Association of americas role with the health and fitness expo. Yes. Were the Largest Consumer organization for people with hearing loss. And this is all levels of hearing loss, from mild to moderate to profound. And we love being at the expo. This is only our eighth year at the expo. Only eighth. This is an amazing partnership. Thank you. We have been so busy there. And what we love about it is people who come to this expo are motivated to do something about a health issue, and its not a clinical environment. Its a friendly environment. And often people are having trouble hearing, dont really want to admit that. So we are teaming up with the lyons club at the expo who have a hearing screening booth. And they can come over to us and they can see a friendly face who can talk to them in a nonclinical setting about what they might do and what the next steps are. A lot of people im sure are deterred by even the idea this is going to cost them money. We just want to remind everyone that the nbc 4 health and fitness expo is absolutely free. So we hope that you will take us up on the offer and come out and meet people and ask the questions that you have on your minds. Doors open at 9 00 a. M. Stay with us. Viewpoint continues after the break. Welcome back to viewpoint. It is the health and fitness expo. It is finally upon us. It seems like it gets here faster and faster every year and every year it gets bigger and bigger. So if you came out and you joined us yesterday, thank you so much. It was really nice to meet you. But today we have another full day. Doors open at 9 00 a. M. And some of the folks that are joining us this morning have been there this weekend and will be there today as well as your team members. So brian smith, the founder and executive director of eduserc. Demetria slaughter with because we care. And Barbara Kelley with the Hearing Loss Association of america. Thanks again so much for being with us. Barbara, tell me about yesterday, how yesterday went and kind of where you guys were right in the middle of everything. We were very busy. Hearing loss is insidious often, and it can creep up on somebody. And we noticed that at this expo when couples come by the booth its most often the spouse who will encourage their husband or wife to come over and check us out. And we really do see the wife go by, and shell look at us and shell go and encourage but its such a nonthreatening environment. And we have a selfassessment test at the booth courtesy of the American Speech Language Hearing Association where they can ask themselves some questions like do you have trouble on the phone, are you having trouble at work and meetings. So we can talk to them about that and help them find out more about what they might do about possible hearing loss. Where is the Hearing Loss Association of america here locally or how can people get in touch with you . Well, our National Headquarters office is in bethesda, maryland but we have members all across the country and we have 250 local chapters across the united states. So if you go onto our website, hearingloss. Org, theres tons of resources. Basic information about hearing loss, some really good videos. We have webinars. And its all information geared toward consumers. We also offer at the booth a consumers guide to purchasing a hearing loss because that can be very daunting, i can imagine. So much information. I said purchasing a hearing loss. I meant purchasing a hearing aid. Its a daunting process. And we have a checklist people can take with them of questions to ask their cysraudiologist. Lots of good information. Demetria, you offer a handson service at the health and fitness expo, and its something people look forward to, being able to participate in some kind of activity. Tell me about the takeaways youve had over the years with really being able to teach somebody not just how to do something but really how to save a life. Well, we have when they walk away they feel comfortable with what theyre doing, the information we provide for them is great. And then also to let them know too that its free, that they dont have to pay for the service. We have a nonprofit. So we do give the service to anyone who cannot afford to pay because we do want people to learn cpr. Its not just about the money. Its about teaching people how to save a life. What is it people say to you, demetria, when they come and approach the booth, when they talk about cpr . Why are they interested . What is it that draws them to the booth . Well, sometimes they have been through experiences like one was where a gentleman was on a subway and the baby was not breathing and they had to stop the train and they wanted him to give breath and he didnt know what to do and the mother panicked. That was one reason he wanted to come down and learn cpr so if an incident do happen again he would know what to do. And some people, they do come down just because they want to learn what to do in case of an emergency, what happens to my mom if shes having a heart attack, how to call 911 and so forth. How to be prepared. How to be prepared. Brian, with your booth is it more of our students, our kids that are going to visit your booth, or are they the parents that have questions for you . Well, sometimes its both. At our booth we always like to have some kind of an attraction there to bring the students by. Well have our 3d printer operating there. Thats cool. Very neat. Im an engineer. So i love little toys. Okay. So well have our 3d printer working. We also have our other cars. Big gigantic kind of like real cars that students can learn to not only drive but more so learn how to build. Because we build things usually from scratch in our programs. But also the parents obviously as well too. The main thing that were trying to help parents and even the schools is learning how can they implement an industrybased program in their school in an afterschool setting, even sometimes at no cost, at zero cost to the entire school. So how can they do that . They can come to our booth and learn what they need to do. And weve got plenty of time to do that today. A reminder that the doors open at the health and fitness expo at 9 00 at the Convention Center. So that we hope that you will stop by and say hello to us. Viewpoint continues after this break. Okay. So right now, everyone is saying, hurry you gotta get fios. But why . Well, because theres never been a better time to get a great deal from fios, the Fastest Internet and wifi available. Only fios has speeds from 50 to 500 megs. Because your devices run better on a better internet. And for just 79. 99 a month online, you can get 50 meg fios internet, tv and phone for your first year. Plus with a 2year agreement, fios gives you 400 back, and all of the premium movie channels for a year. This is your last chance. Offer ends january 16th. Get out of the past. Get fios. We are right in the middle of our nbc 4 health and fitness expo. And the doors open this morning at 9 00 a. M. , and there are lots of people that still have lots of questions about all the different things, all the different people, all the different booths that they can find that are absolutely free. So joining us this morning we have three wonderful representatives that have joined us for many years that have partnered with us, and we thank you in advance. From eduserc, because we care, and the Hearing Loss Association of america. So new year, new goals im sure for each of your organizations, and also im sure some new needs that the community has as the communities continue to change and evolve. So brian, tell me a little bit about kind of what you hope to do with your organization in 2016 and how you all help to, you know hope, i should say, to meet the communitys needs in this new year. Well, this year is a very special year for us. We started in 1996. This is our 20th year. Congratulations. In business. So were really proud of that. This year were looking to develop a lot of more partnerships such that we can have a pipeline, in other words, like a corporate Pipeline Council and workforce development. So were looking to partner with many other companies to help us do the trainings and provide a curriculum to students in the community. So our biggest piece is just partnerships. Developing more partnerships and serving more youth. Demetria, youve been at this for a very long time. How can you all grow in 2016 . What is it youre looking forward to doing . Well, my goal for 2016 will be reaching out to more schools. Okay. What i want to do this year is reach out to not just only to the teachers but to the students at the school to teach them cpr and as well as partnership with them to where they can have the students to feel more comfortable in wanting to learn it and take it more serious. Do a lot of students really have an interest, have a desire to learn . A lot of them do. Like when i do the parents they sometimes take their children with them and they want to take a role in learn to go. I want them to join in classes as well. So i want to now do the schools to let them know that they can go out there and learn cpr and become instructors at the age of 16. Thats amazing. How long does it take to learn cpr . Cpr takes between four to eight hours. It all depends on the student. I like to make the student feel comfortable. I dont want to rush it. But i want to make sure that the student, when they walk away, they feel comfortable at what they have to do in case of an emergency, they will know what to do. All right, barbara. What about Hearing Loss Association of america . Big goals for 2016. We have annual conventions since 1982. And the good news for the people in the washington metro area is this years convention is being held june 23rd to 26th at the washington hilton at du pont circle. And its kind of an extension of this health expo because well have a trade show, an exhibit hall that is totally free and open to the public. And people can come in and try all the latest technology, talk to hearing aid companies. Very Hightech Solutions for hearing loss and very lowtech like maybe a visual alert so someone can hear the doorbell if their hearing aids off. So we really welcome the whole community to come in. Of course they can come to the conference with workshops and seminars and great speakers, but the exhibit hall is free and open to the public. We just have so much to offer at the expo, and we really hope that you will take the time if youre watching us this morning, that youre having your cup of coffee, that you will shower, get dressed, and then get out the door and meet us at the Convention Center for another onderful health and fitness expo. Were back with more viewpoint after this. Here in vineland, home of progresso, we figured out how to get rich ingredients like bacon into 22 light soups, so if you want 100 calories or less per serving without giving up rich flavor do what we do. Make it progresso. This moment is perfect in every way just like my kid gooey. Flaky. Happy. Toaster strudel. Now with more icing. Welcome back to viewpoint. Im erika gonzalez. If youre just now joining us, the doors to the nbc 4 health and fitness expo at the Convention Center open at 9 00 a. M. , and we sure do hope that you will join us. We had a wonderful day yesterday, and we still have another full day ahead of us today. And you all are here to represent every one of your organizations. Youve got a team of people that have been helping you with the expo year in and year out. Brian, i want to start with you. For people that are at home that are watching us, maybe theyre cozy in bed or on the couch and maybe they dont have any plans to leave the house. But this is so worth it. It is. It definitely is. I mean, every year when were there we see not only obviously the benefit of coming down to interact with people but i mean the Health Benefits are just phenomenal. I actually personally t lly try only visit here at this health fair but if i can visit another nbc health fair all around ill try to. What is it you try to take advantage of . I really try to take advantage of the Free Health Care and the free any free offerings that many of the partners have there. Its awesome. Whether its from a dental perspective or even if its from a chiropractic perspective. Key word free. Right, barbara . And you were mentioning one of the big things is its the environment that has a lot to do with inviting and enticing people to come. People are very motivated to find out about health issues. And there are 48 Million People in the country with hearing loss. So thats the Third LargestHealth Concern next to diabetes and heart disease. Really . So that means about 1 in 10 persons have a hearing loss. So chances are if you dont know somebody with hearing loss you might have one yourself. So come down, come to our booth, talk to some really Friendly Faces with some good information, get your hearing screened, and dont be afraid because often if you have a hearing loss, even a mild one, its affecting your work life, its affecting your personal relationships, and you can do something about it. Demetria, your invitation to folks that are watching at home this morning. Come on down to the health expo to be certified in cpr. We do have Training Instructors that will be there that will take time out to teach you cpr at no cost. So come on down, get certified, and learn the basics in cpr. The American Heart Association, and you will be certified. You can be certified same day. Yes. Amazing. The American Heart Association does the ecards now. So we will have our laptops there. So as you complete the class and so forth, there will be someone there doing the ecards for you so when you get ready to leave the health expo you will walk away with your certification. So come on down and get certified in cpr. Thats just incredible. Brian, is there Something Else that you wanted to add . Well, i mean, overall at our booth we definitely welcome everybody to come on out. Well be having information about our conference that will be hosted this year by microsoft, the annual career and professional development conference. Information from a lot of our partners, whether northrop grumman, home depot and other information to help schools develop after school industrybased programs next year. Excellent. We know it can be kind of daunting because its a big Convention Center. But theres just so many booths there and so many things for you to take advantage of. So just take your time, get down there, walk around booth by booth, ask the questions you that really have on your mind, and please take advantage of all these free services. But will that rain clear in time for the kickoff at fedex field . Its a big day. Absolutely. Weve got a busy sunday going on. Thats right. Also weve got a lot of money still to be won, right .
