In the past two hours charlotte leaders laid out plans to control the crowds of people expected to flood charlotte for this years ciaa tournament. Alexa ashwell is live outside where the games start tomorrow, alexa . Reporter well, stephanie, excitement is certainly brewing here outside Time Warner Cable arena as were one day away a couple hours ago organizers and talking everything ciaa, what events will take place. How the tournament benefits the city and area youth. And how cmpd plans to keep people safe. 150,000 people are expected to come the the greater charlotte area for this tournament. Last year that translated to more than 55 million for the local economy. Today mayor roberts said the city is pleased, proud, and honored to host the tournament. While cmpd says the department is ready, willing and able. Officers will be very visible this weekend. The department has also been in touch with area bars and nightclubs. Last year there was the shooting and stabbing at two area nightclubs during ciaa weekend. These establishments were not affiliated with a tournament. Still cmpd is putting an emphasis on them so everyone feels safe. We have officers at every one. We make sure we have Operations Communications with the management. Now, i checked with the city, officials plan to declare the tournament an extraordinary event. Which means there will be extra security measures in place. Tonight city council will vote on an 18 milliondollar contract for upgrades to Time Warner Cable arena. The city and the Charlotte Hornets are paying for the project. Rooms. Partially to get the arena ready for next years allstar the city will vote on the contract with rogers builders to manage the project. Stocks are surging this midday as they continue with last weeks momentum. Investors have a lot to celebrate. U. S. Oil prices are up 7 to nearly 32 a barrel. And there are new signs of stability in chinas economy. Right now is dow is up 208 thieves have targeted yet another Fire Department in our area. Over night suspects broke out the windows of cars parked at the flint hill Fire Department in fort mill. Investigators have not said how many cars were damaged or what there are surveillance cameras on the outside of the building. And they hope it leads them to a suspect. In the past two weeks, thieves broke into cars at stations in kannapolis, china grove, and two charlotte fire stations. All while firefighters were out on calls. In huntersville, Firefighters Department after someone ransacked their vehicles friday night. Police havent said if theyre related. Right now police are searching for a man they say kidnapped a 16yearold who was walking to school in east charlotte. The victim was on his way to east Meck High School thursday morning when someone drove up behind him, pointed a gun at him, and forced him in the car. The driver pulled over nearby and tried to attack him. The teen jumped out of the car and ran to conference drive for help. He described the kidnapper as a man in his mid 30s who was 59 and 200pounds. He had shoulder length dread locks and facial hair. He was last seen driving a white fourdoor sedan. Possibly a newer model if you have information, call police. New at noon, police in gastonia are investigating two armed robberies on this same block. Officers say someone robbed express mart on franklin boulevard saturday night. Family dollar was hit last night. You can see right here how close the stores are. An investigation is under way this midday after Fire Destroys much of a historic schoolhouse. Why one local mayor in the area is being threatened ahead in live reports. The warnings for North Carolina schools that theyre not testing enough students. The Charlotte School where fewer than 5 of students took final exams last year. Rain showers will slowly be building throughout the day. Ill have the newest time line at to expect for the new at noon, the federal Education Department sent North Carolina a letter warning its not testing enough students. More than 300 schools including ones in our area, did not test enough students. Skyzooms are supposed to have at least 95 of students take state exams. The agency is now threatening to pull federal funding if the state cant achieve that. North carolina is one of 13 states to get this letter here. The letter says the state is putting the success of every student at risk by not collecting enough testing data. Commonwealth high, a school in east charlotte, had the lowest wral obtained state records. Some schools told wral numbers are low because its tough to schedule make up days for missed tests. If a student is going to fail any way. He may choose not to take the end of course test. At small schools, a few students make up a large body. Turning sights to South Carolina ahead of the democratic president ial primary. Clinton who won in nevada this weekend is expected to do well in South Carolina because of her support among black voters. Stephanie, we saw folks out here fighting back tears as firefighters work to bring this fire under control. You can see that theyve got the flames knocked downright now. But i want to show you Something Real quick. I just spoke with the fire chief. He tells me not only did the roof collapse but the second floor as well. In fact, if you look through the front doors of the old hildebrand schoolhouse, you can see all the debris right there. When i got on the scene around 5 30 this morning all i initially saw was heavy smoke pouring from the building. Firefighters believe the fire started somewhere in the basement and spread from there. You can see what happened 40 minutes later as the fire broke through the roof. Firefighters focused their effort on saving town hall mayor says firefighters actually went inside, removed computers to save information from up to hall, it fortunately was not damaged. The building that was damaged was at one time the old hildebrand schoolhouse dating back 100 years. Town leaders decided a year ago to tear down the billing setting off a fierce court battle with those wanting to keep it. In the last hour we confirmed there was power running to portions of the building. I spoke with several people here this morning who believe this fire was possibly set. Its to accident. I can tell you that. Its no accident. Theres been comments made that the buildings going to burn one day. And here we are. Its burning. I have no clue. I think what did people say to you. It was said indirectly to me. That was mayor jenny cook. She tells me despite those threats shes going to have her Council Meeting tonight in the town of hildebrand. There will be extra Law Enforcement on hand. I did get a chance to talk with the fair chief a short time ago, i asked him about a possible cause in all of this. The state Health Department will release updated numbers. On friday we told you there are 11 reported cases. 2 are confirmed in Iredell County. The remaking eight are considered probable. The two confirmed cases in Iredell County have been linked to lowes headquarters in mooresville. Center tested positive for the mumps. Authorities are working to make sure the 4,000 people who work there stay healthy. The state Fire Marshals Office is investigating a major house fire in huntersville. It happened around 2 30 on devon shire drive near the brook dale golf club. Fire Officials Say the house was covered in flames when they arrived moments after the first 911 call. The house was vacant and under going renovations. But a bystander was taken to inhalation. We didnt see the person when we got here. He came up after the fact. It took 30 firefighters to control the flames in an hour. Theyre still trying to figure out what caused it. The action federal safety officials are now threatening heres a look at the heres a look at new at noon, federal officials now say no hover board is safe. The Consumer ProductSafety Commission says hover boards may have to be recalled the u. S. Costing 2 million in damage. Toys r us has taken the boards off its website. Over stock is stopping all sales and amazon is offering full refunds. Its irresponsible for a company to continue to sell hover boards that they know do not comply with the standard. One of the biggest manufacturers says its working to meet the latest standard. U. S. Customs officials have seized more than 2400 counterfeit hover boards. They say are also incredibly dangerous. They say the lithium ion batteries from china do not meet u. S. Safety standards. Several colleges across the carolinas have also banned the boards. U. N. C chapel hill, North Carolina central, queens, and other universities no longer allow them on campus. The Carolina Panthers even banned them from the locker room.
