Specifally the woman who spoke said she was upset over the recommendation to add more officers and deputies. She also said they need to make Community Meetings more accessible to the public so were told the Common Council does plan to hold two Community Meetings before anything in the plan is finalized and those meetings are in the process of being scheduled. We also want to mention this mornings disruption caused the Common Council to cancel a presentation scheduled to honor two Milwaukee Police officers who saved a boy from drowning while off duty. Students at Sherman Multicultural Arts School were greeted by music, balloons, a red carpet and mayor tom barrett. School leaders say the theme this year is all about turnaround and improving student achievement. This school is blocks away from the unrest in sherman park. Mayor barrett says it was important to show the pomp and circumstance. The neighbors are excited for the positive vibe. They said were happy to see this is more indicative of this neighborhood. This is what sherman park is all about. Mps superintendent, dr darienne driver, says its important for kids to know they have a safe place to go like school. More than 75 thousand mps students started back to school this morning. Now that school is back in session drivers need to be more alert; watch out for more children walking and School Busses on the roads. Ann sterling is live with more on changes coming to School Busses thea this law is new wisconsin but every other state in the nation already has it. The new law requires amber lights on most school buses. A familiar rumble and roll is back. Now that school is back in session, drivers get ready youre going to see new lights on school buses. Flashing amber lights. Basically, treat it like a red light getting ready to stop. Red light they are stopped so you must stop behind the vehicle. The flashing amber lights tell drivers the bus is preparing to stop. Cars are allowed to pass buses while those lights are on but only if it is safe to do so. Once the red lights start flashing. Drivers must stop. Its very important if you see the red lights and the stop arms on the side of the bus its time to stop. Not all buses will have the new 8 light system but if t bus was made after january of 2005 its required to have the flashing amber lights. Really the only difference is now its an amber light saying you have to slow down before it was red indicating they have to stop right away. If you pass a bus when the light turns red the fine is steep. More than 300 dollars and you a state trooper or Police Officer doesnt have to number and turn you in. Classes also kicked off today at schools in racine. New this year. The Racine Unified School district working with the Police Department to implement a communityoriented policing model in its schools. The two entities will train officers to better relate to students. So they can help not only with law enforcmenent issues. But also mental health. And truancy problems. Understanding how to deescslate and build relationships with students so theyre seen as part of the support group that helps all of our students be successful the district will also be upgrading security equipment like cameras throughout this school year.
