And we begin with the breaking news in chicago. It has been an extraordinary night. Violent protests broke out inside and outside of a planned donald trump rally tonight. We thank you for joining us. Im tony perkins. And im shawn yancy. The gop president ial frontrunner said he postponed the event over safety concerns. It was just a wild scene. Reporter it really was quite chaotic. Donald trump told fox news this evening he believes he did the right thing by cancelling his rally. He said he didnt want anyone to get hurt. He also says he does not see this about protests of his policies, but simply a general expression of all the anger thats out there right now. The streets have thinned out, they are much calmer. Still a rather Strong Police presence what we saw earlier was Demonstrators University of illinois where donald trump was set to hold his rally. Dozens of faculty and staff had petitioned University Administrators to cancel the event. More than 50,000 people had signed a petition but the rally was set to go on. As crowds started gathering inside and out, thats when things turned chaotic. There were physical and verbal confrontations between those supporting the gop front runner. Racial tensions were visible as well. For one of the first times it seems there were equal amounts of Trump Supporters and demonstrators gathered. People came in each others faces. Police cleared the arena and protests continued outside with chants and more tussles. Were going to g and beat both of them and let people know whats going on. I hear this was crazy. We had thousands of thousands people pouring as supporters and we had far smaller amounts but still a few thousand people outside as protesters. You cant even think of it, youre not even allowed in a peaceful rally, you cant even have a peaceful rally today in a major city in the united states. Which is a terrible thing. But you know chicago is a home to some pretty rough rallies. The Democratic Convention years ago. A lot of people were hurt. A lot of people were killed. Reporter encouraging people to repeat this level of protests at future donald trump events. The executive director says, quote, trumps hatefilled rhetoric should be on notice and he thanked those in chicago who came out to protest succeed in stifling his riilt to free speech. Tomorrow he has an event scheduled in ohio and missouri. Jennifer davis, thank you very much. So, how do tonights protest change the race for the gop nomination, or do they. Republican strategist michael lane will join us to discuss the fallout. Fox 5 is in Fairfax County tonight with a murder mystery. Police want to know who shot a killed a man in his 80s inside his Million Dollar home. Reporter two neighbors said they heard a burst of gunfire just after 1 00 a. M. And then another burst. Both rapid fire shots. They key cliind to speak on camera but police told them the man was shot inside his home and the gunfire came from the outside. He was found in the backyard suffering from trauma to the upper bod officers rushed to the scene after getting a 911 call from the wife and a second call from a neighbor. We have a helicopter and canine. Reporter police spent the next several hours scouring the crime scene, paying close attention to the backyard, the pass yoe and the dock. We had asked residents to remain indoors. The investigation is still ongoing. Reporter property records showed they purchased the home in the early 90s and its value is listed at just over 1 million. He was from the netherlands and retired from the world bank. I think its fair to say everyone is shocked. Nothing like this has happened in this neighborhood. Its very kwii e most Everybody Knows everybody else and were blissfully free of crime and this is certainly a shock. Reporter tom york has lived in this neighborhood his entire life and knew the how would you describe him . Quiet, lived here long time, loved to sail. Always had his grandkids to go sailing on his sail boats in the summertime. Just no explanation. Reporter and at this hour, if police had one, theyre not saying. Paul wagner, fox 5 local news. Police are not saying if they have a suspect nor a motive. We have a followup to a story that you saw first on fox 5. We told you about a man shot multiple times in southeast. For more than half an hour there was no ambulance to take the victim to the hospital. Tonight fox 5 has obtained the audio from the dispatch calls and it is giving us more insight into what happened and the ongoing problem with the lack of ambulances in the city. Fox 5s Alexandra Limon is live tonight with more. Alex . Reporter and today a spokesperson with the dc fire on wednesday, the day the shooting happened, the department received a high volume of calls for service and he says thats part of the problem and why it took so long for an ambulance to arrive at the scene of the shooting. For more than 20 minutes you can hear dispatch go back and forth with an ambulance en route to southeast dc, called to this scene, where a man shot multiple times lay critically injured in the street. During the exchange theres no indication of when the ambulance actually arrives. The ambulance aint come until like almost an hour. Reporter we asked dc fire why it took so long for such a seriously injured victim to get help. A spokesperson for the Department Said in a statement, at the time this incident was dispatched, the closest available transport unit was nearly 8 miles paramedics arrived on scene within 4 minutes and began treating the patient immediately. A closer transport unit became available and arrived on scene within 20 minutes of the call being received. Based on a patients condition, a decision was made to use a air lift to quickly get them to the hospital. Cell phone shot shows firefighters giving chest compressions to the victim and carrying him to the chopper which was waiting about a block away. On facebook the victims cousin says the man is now in the icu fighting for his life. She posted that he was shot after a domestic situation with someone he knew, dispelling any rumors that the situation may have involved drugs or criminal activity. Somebody was arrested and charged for the shooting, but this is all leading to even more questions about the lack of ambulances in the district. Now, a spokesperson for the Fire Department tells us that on marc will be placed into service and the Department Says that those supplemental units should approve the ability to respond to emergency calls. But again that isnt happening until march 28th. Reporting live at fire headquarters, Alexandra Limon, fox 5 local news. The man behind a robbery spree across two counties in maryland is now behind bars. He was taken into custody after Police Spotted say vehicle matching a description of the suspects car. He is accused of robbing four locations yesterday afternoon, including three Montgomery County banks in a span of 15 minutes. Hes also linked to at least nine other robberies known by detectives as the hashtag string of robberies. They say the suspect used various hashtags in the notes passed to tellers asking for money. Including no police and be careful. We are learning more about a disturbing found they found 40 cats along with several dead animals and some weapons inside. The cats were turned over to animal control. Workers will now monitor the animals and they hope to have them adopted out to good homes. I hope to get them adopted. I want to place them in homes that will keep them indoors, hopefully. In Frederick County theres a running at large ordinance. They have to stay on your property. The Sheriffs Office says the homeowner is undergoing a mental evaluation. Theres no word tonight if charges will be filed. Every since it was announced that the redskins hired a swedish firm to design a new stadium. There was spec uls as to what it might look like. This is an early rendering of what seems to be some sort of translucent blob of a stadium. With a very modern look. A lazy river, theres actually a mock kay oddly there iss no roof but it seems to be some sort of futuristically jello mold. I like that its like a bowl with a handle. I asked what some dc residents think of the new look. See what they said. I think that is. What does that look like to you . It looks like a candy dish. Like a bowl. Maybe a clock . It looks like a big bowl. You put soup in it. It can look maybe like an oyster quickly. Yeah, like you to slurp it up. Yeah, yeah. This is the new potentially redskins football stadium. Wow. The look of a soccer stadium. Its very nice. I think it looks wonderful. Its beautiful. Nice color. Its very artistic. But not the typical look of a football stadium. Not in america. Maybe for ball. Presumably there will be no ballet at the new skins stadium. But yes that amorphous oysterlike design has a stuck turl basis. It allows the weight to be supported evenly without beams or pilons so you dont block the view. That way you can get an open concourse without any obstruction. So there is some reason behind what we have here. I like it. I think its very modern and different. And it wont look like anything else, at least stateside. It looks a little jellyfishish. A fairly light wind right now but heres what were watching really closely its all that precipitation well to the south of us and weve got low pressure systems that are going to move their way up toward the mid atlantic. She became an International Social media sensation last month when she got an early birthday wish to meet the president and first lady at the white house. Her excitement led her to start dancing. Two other Police Officers were recognized for their life saving hero theyre stories are coming up tonight. 1,000 invited guests from the top ranks of washington and hollywood attended Nancy Reagans funeral at the Ronald Reagan president ial library. Many of them delivered remarks. But closing out the ceremony were the first ladys children. Patti davis and ron reagan. My parents were two halfs of a circle closed tight around a world. While they might venture out and include others in their orbit, no one truly crossed the boundary into the space they held as theirs. They were coequals. They complemented one another. Individually they may have gone far, but did go anywhere. Nancy reagan, who died sunday at 94, was buried beside her husband on the library grounds. Tonight a dc mother is remembering a very personal experience that she had with a former first lady. Their connection takes us back to 1983 when the comes eightyearold son was involved in a hit and run accident in northwest. Ronika clearry picks up the story. He was very smart, very intelligent, he liked animals. Loved his family. Reporter thats katy describing her son. He was a third grader and after leaving school one day he was hit by a driver who fled the scene. After the accident he was in a coma and when he emerged he had a request. After he came out of the coma, he had asked to see nancy reagan. And i said, th wife . The first lady . He said yes. I said why do you want to see her . He said, i just want to see her in that pretty red suit that she wears all the time. Reporter nancy reagan honored his wish on Christmas Eve 1983. She spent about four hours at the hospital with him along with other children in the intensive care unit. She gave him a Christmas Gift and took pictures with him. It was amazing. I dont think any other first lady would have done what she did. Reporter she explained that his life expired on christmas and he was pronounced deceased on december 27th. For her words cant fully express about mrs. Reagan taking time to visit her son. I would just like to say thank you for the graciousness of what she done for my if you really think about it, the first lady at the time of the united states, such busy schedule and for her to take out her time to come and visit him, i am very grateful to this day and always will be grateful. A mass combrif protest erupted in chicago tonight just at donald trump was scheduled to hold a rally in the city. Donald trump ended up cancelling the event saying he did not want people to get hurt. Police wearing riot gear moved in to control the crowd. Some people were arrested. There were some injuries but we dont have any official word on how many. Joining us now to talk about what unfolded tonight is republican strategist mike lane. Thanks for being here tonight. As we watched and all of this started unfolding on a friday night, everybodys eyes were glued to the tv watching the events unfold. Gop, Donald Trumps gop trying to think of the name. Opponents. They came out tonight and they said that trump bears some re bears some responsibility because of what happened at the rallies themselves where trump is encouraging his supporters to punch the opposition in the face or they say his language incites violence. Do you think that donald trump bears some responsibility for what we saw tonight . Well, first of all, his opponents are running begins him and theyre trying to make themselves look better and get more votes than he gets. So i would really discount as political rhetoric what theyre saying about this. But looking at Donald Trumps rallies themselves, theres the beginning of a pattern developing here. It first it was small and this afternoon in st. Louis i think there were about 31 that were arrested or Something Like that. And now you have a Mass Organization created by moveon. Org that got all these people into the rally. And it was a real tinder box. And this had the potential of breaking into something really, really ugly. And i think that mr. Trump has to do two things. I think he hasto provide more and better security for his rallies, because we know this is going to continue because moveon. Org is going to continue to try to violate his Constitutional Rights and shut him down. But the second thing he might want to reconsider some of his rhetoric and see if he can reate a more stable atmosphere in his rallies rather than the potential for conflict that we see. Do you think he is beginning to understand that . We did see the other night in the gop debate a calmer, quieter donald trump than weve seen, which really set the tone for the debate overall. I think that mr. Trump is in the process of transitioning into a general election candidate at this point, he believes, rightly or wrongly, that he has the flom nation sewn up at this point. So rather than continuing to be provocative and tap really, really hard into the anger of the electorate hes trying to use as a his as nomination, hes starting to transition to soften his approach and present himself so that come the convention he can come around as everybodys general election candidate. In recent days weve seen a number of big names come out to rally against donald trump. And ask the base to sort of rally against him. We saw former massachusetts governorer mitt romney come out and eviscerate donald trump. From the republican standpoint we havent seen anything like this before. The Republican Party doesnt know what to do with donald trump. What do you think is the next move . Where are we going . Are we going to end up if donald trump is the nominee, what will that mean for the Republican Party . Certainly the establishment. Republican party doesnt know what to make of or do with donald trump and they fear him. And whether or not thats wellplaced or justified, thats for them to decide. But where are we going and how is it going to happen . Right now the Republican Party is very divided. And if you list trumps rhetoric over the last just two or three days, hes starting to talk about unity. Hes starting to talk about Everybody Needs to come together. Hes talking about unifying behind his candidacy of course. Nonetheless its the healing kind of words, not the angry words that characterized his campaign for the first year. What do you make of this. Ive been watching the pundits on the various Cable Networks tonight trying to make sense out of this. Trump himself called in to the nerks saying theres a lot of saying theres a lot of anger out there which many say hes tapping into. What do you make of this . Why do you think were seeing this type of activity happening right now . Youve got a lot of anger on both sides. This whole protest was organized by moveon. Org. Theyre the people behind Bernie Sanders and bernie is tapping into the anger on the democratic side of the aisle. Youve got one complete anger group, and youve got the angry people on the republican side at the trump rally. Theres no common ground. Theres no getting along there. And thats what created a circumstance right now. I think trump needs to provide better security. Hes already starting to transition his rhetoric. But you have to watch out because these protests are going to get bigger and bigger. I think as moveon and other elements of the Democratic Party start moving it along. We could go on and on because i still have many more questions but theyre giving us the wrap. Ill come back. Yes indeed. What i did wasnt extraordinary. Its what weve been trained to do. You may hear its extraordinary, but its not. My instinct was to help. I knew i wasnt going to be able to pull her over the railing. I knew it would risk both of our lives. So i just gave her my air. Doctors would not comment on the womans condition today. He said he talked to her and shes expected to stay in the hospital for a while longer. The medal of valor. The officers were honored for their heroic action last september when they pulled a man to safety after his car caught fire on the outer loop of the beltway. Youre seeing video of that event for now. You can see the dash cam as the officers approached the vehicle. They had to think fast. The car doors and locked, flames were quickly ungulfing the car. You do exactly what were paid to do. Were there to try and save people. Thats the entire mind set we have. Were dealing with a situation weve got somebody in there and yeah we see the windshield melting and the dash melting, weve got to get this individual out whether thats melting or not. It was quick, they respond so fast. 5, 10 seconds later, i dont know where i would be right now. The victim suffered only minor burns in that accident. He says he is grateful to the officers for saving his life and to the anonymous person who drove by the accident scene and called 911. They Work Together to turn their concept into a real working application. Sunday than it has been. Our temperatures have been unbelievably well above the seasonal average. Now were headed to the 60s for this weekend. So a little difference there and temperatures are going to rise again by next week. So youre going to see a little bit of a roller coaster ride. So 59 degrees right now at dc. Winds are from the east northeast at 6 miles per hour. Weve had light winds all day long and that is continuing. And elsewhere in our neighborhoods, temperaturewise, weve got 58 degrees at dulles this here, 56 at baltimore, 54 at leonard stoun. 48 at frederick. As we take a look at what it would be like, were going to he see a little bit of difference in those temperatures. They go down into the low 40s in most of our neighborhoods. Temperaturewise well be in the low to mid 40s pretty much everywhere for tonight. Well see just a few clouds, not a lot, and mostly clear skies before the night is over. Heres our next e were watching all this precipitation in the south. A couple of systems going to head straight up the mid atlantic and this is whats going bring us rain. In the meantime ridge of high pressure, not holding us too bad. Mostly clear tonight. But then were going to see late showers on saturday. I cant rule out saturday, later part of the day starting off maybe just a little bit of drizzle and maybe a light shower or two. Not widespread. Not everybody is going to get this. But by the time we get into sunday, its a different story. Sunday is going to be unsettled. Were going to see that rain start to move in and it will linger through into monday as well. So monday is going to be a wet day. Heres a look at future cast. 5 00, 6 00 saturday. The clouds start to increase. Once we get into the late overnight hours, we start to see some of this rain. Earlier i cant rule out maybe some drizzle. Sunday morning it starts to fill in.
