The incident which happened while the officer was off duty was all caught on camera. The video shows raleigh Police Officer dan hicks coming to the rescue as he was heading home from work. Hicks says he got the call about a man in distress and in need of help. He stopped at nothing to save his life. But the officer had no clue this camera was rolling. Because the surgery would end his career. This is crazy because this is my life. And then all of a sudden, to not be able to taste and if i was going to lose my tongue, the irony was huge. As soon as i got there and he started talking to me a huge relief over my like a weight taken off of me. Reporter because the doctor felt a dare didnt need surgery. He needed chemotherapy and radiation. I think he was incredibly relieved to fine out that it was completely reasonable to expect that he would have a high chance of surviving this using standard of therapy. Reporter a dare started with chemo. The first day i was squared to death because its the unknown. I decided i was going to be and be the most positive person that could be. Reporter radiation had warned him would be tougher. He said youre going to lose your taste buds. And did he for about eight months. Each one of the taste buds came back at different time. Salt came back. Then sour came back. And bitter came back. I judge his recovery based on whether he could do this wine pairings and so when he started telling me he was able to start doing his wine pairings i felt pretty good about how he was doing. Reporter sweetness came back last. One day i ate. Ill try chocolate and ma and it was so sweet. Right on the end of my tongue and i was like, yes its back. A therapy dog gets some therapy of his own after suffering a spinal cord injury. A look at the tlc this special guy got before getting back to helping others.
