One of his passions is helping people on transplant lists find organ donors and when this young new jersey man isnt doing that, he is shining the light on the syndrome he battles. Its been a long few years. I usually push myself to do whatever i can. Reporter give havent his condition Patrick Fulton does a lot. I try and push myself to have a normal life as possible. Reporter when we first met the 25 year old from millville, new jersey, in june, he was waiting for a new kidney. Going to dialysis three times a week was obviously taking a to toll. Im on a machine that filters my blood for four hours. Usually ill feel weak and tired afterwards. Reporter sadly that wasnt the only thing Rowan University junior was dealing with. He also has something called prune belly syndrome. Its very rare. It only happens in about one in 40,000 births. Mainly males. Syndrome leaves you with a partial or complete absence of abdominal muscles so your belly ends up looking very much like a prune hence the name. It also affects the bladder and the kidneys. 65 a rare case because 20 dont make it past the age of one or two. And then after that its another 30 that den make the past the age of five. Roughly 50 dont make it past the age of five. The rare disorder can also cause skeletal problem. I was sitting in my kitchen on the floor trying to get a pan from the bottom cabinet and when i stood up, the kneecap popped out of place. Hear bones start to get very brittle because during the process of dialysis not only does it tack out the bad stuff, it can end up taking out the good stuff, too. Despite spending three years on the transplant list, patrick has managed to take everything in stride. And hes made it his mission to educate anyone who will listen about prune belly syndrome. I dont like to just sit around and just mope about it. Id like to go out and do thing. I dont like to feel that my condition is a disability.
