Thanks to a 13yearolds nerves and a veteran firefighters courage everybody inside that home when the fire broke out made it out alive. Garrett haake has followed the story for us all day and joins us live from childrens. Reporter tonight that 13 yearold boy and his 9yearold little sister are both recovering here in stable condition. Firefighters today said they were nearly not so lucky get for that boy staying so calm when so many of us would have panicked. What is the location of the emergency . Reporter from the moment he dials 911 13yearold marcus does nearly everything right. I think my parents are asleep. This house is really smoky. Reporter its not yet 7 7 a. M. And he and his sister are trapped in their upstairs bedroom. He explains how firefighters can find them. Impactly where are you located . In exactly where are you located . In the top room in the right. Reporter and tries to keep his sister from panicking. Well die please dont say that. Reporter downstairs where the fire began an older brother scrambles to safety. I came out. The fire is 2 feet from my door, ran upstairs, panic and everything, didnt know what to do. Reporter while firefighters rush to the scene his parents wait helplessly outside marcus acts. Eight minutes after the call help awards. The lieutenant scoops up marcus first. There was a tug to my pants leg below my knee and that alerted me to the 9yearold laying on the floor next to the window. Reporter hours later the veteran firefighter was still shaken up by the dramatic rescue that could easily have gone the other way. Its still very emotional for me. Thats about all i can say about it right now. Reporter you saw those other firefighters gather to honorward. They also honored mark to honor ward. They also honored marcus. Several of them suggested he join the force when hes old enough. Hes already got one save under his belt. Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. A baltimore man dies after suffering serious injuries while in police custody. Freddie gray was arrested last week. Police havent said why they apprehended the 27yearold baltimore man. Jill wagner reports that the Baltimore Police commissioner is promising a full investigation. Reporter the family of freddie gray says this is what it looked like when he was arrested 1 week ago. The gray family gave this cell phone video to the Cbs Television station in baltimore, wjz. The 25yearold ended up in the hospital. A family Attorney Says grays spine was 80 severed at his neck and that he lapsed into a coma, died, was resuscitated and remained in a coma until he died sunday. Police have not yet said how he was hurt during the arrest. The questions that many of you have are the same questions that were asking. How was mr. Gray injured . Reporter a criminal investigation is now underway to determine what happened including interviewing the Police Officers involved and others who witnessed the arrest. This is a twopart investigation. One is the criminal case and thats a twopart criminal. Thats for mr. Gray who is now the decedent in this case and the officers. Reporter police say the arrest happened in a high crime area known for drug trafficking. Four bicycle officers stopped gray. The beat officers believed that mr. Gray was either immediately involved or had been recently involved in criminal activity. No justice no peace reporter protesters demonstrated this weekend to bring attention to what happened. They say the arrest is just part of an ongoing problem of tension between those who live here and police. Jill wagner, cbs news. The officers involved in the arrest have been placed on administrative leave. Metro conducted a full scale drill to test its readiness should another disaster occur. This is the very first exercise since a smoke filled metro train claimed the wife of an alexandria woman last january. The life of an alexandria woman last january. Reporter Montgomery County detective Jason Huggins says for the most part police are operating in recovery mode searching for any remains as their criminal investigation continues. Theres definitely frustration with that and the level of help and resources at times. Reporter i caught up with the father troy turner who still says his kids are alive commenting on the Massive Police search sunday. I think its great because to me its all process of elimination at this point. When theres enough places searched that theyre not, hopefully they can concentrate on trying to find my kids who i believe are still out there. I havent seen nothing. Ive been all through the creek, down through the woods. Its definitely good for the community to know that theyre caring, doing their job. Reporter fishermen watched as the search crews headed for the woods. Its all worth it. I cant believe they havent been found. Until we have definitive information on the whereabouts of these children well continue to search for them. Dna hair analysis used by the fbi over two decades may have led to wrongful convictions. The fbi and Justice Department have now formally acknowledged that most of the hair analysis testimony by Fbi Laboratory examiners was flawed. Thats led to a review of close to 300 cases and the exoneration of five previously convicted defendants. One of them is 51yearold kevin martin. He served 26 years in prison for the rape and murder of a 19 yearold woman in southeast washington. Martin spoke with with wusa9 news after he was exonerated last july. It feels like i was living in horror, a dream gone bad. Were just kind of getting started. Notice everything is lifting off to the north, northeast, a solid wall of rain on top of the region. Occasionally we get a more moderate shower like whats hitting arlington. The rain does pick up to our southwest from warrenton back toward culpeper. This area of moderate rain is moving northeast at 40 miles an hour. So it will be spreading up west of i95, manassas 12 05, wood bridge 12 14. The rain extends into central virginia, so its coming up 301 as well. Well watch that whole area move toward dahlgren and la plata at about 12 39 and dunkirk at 1 17 and theres more going back down into southern and southwestern virginia. So a wet night, a flood watch in effect until tomorrow morning across the region. Dont drive through any high water. Weather headlines, heavy rain tonight into monday morning. Some flooding is possible. Thats why the flood watch, some streams, creeks. Any low roads in the morning, take your time. A nearly seven hour rescue effort in Silver Spring kept Montgomery County fire and ems busy early this morning. The 9weekold pomeranian puppy was stuck in the pipes below the surface. His frantic owner called the Fire Department for help.
