Them, but they were torn that possibly one of the rounds that were fired may have hit this child. When it was determined that the gun that killed layla was only 3 to 6 inches from her when it was fired really was a sense of relief for all these officers. That was scott broom reporting. Also in Prince Georges County one woman is dead, her killer still on the loose tonight. The victim whose name has not been released was found dead by a relative in her townhouse on west forest road ville. She was in her 30s and now greenbelt investigators recovered a vehicle that could be linked to the homicide. They tried to pull over the driver around 4 30 this morning. The driver sped away. The car was found abandoned a few minutes later. In the wake of this recent explosion of deadly violence within families in Prince Georges County leaders say they are woking to try and stop it. Listen to the words of Council Chair mel franklin who issued this poignant call of action to men. Far too many of our residents and families cannot resolve their problems without resorting to physical and emotional violence. Often its fatal violence. Thats a fact and im here as a father, as a machine to say to the other machine in man to say to the other men in our community this issue isnt only about us, but a lot of it is about us. We are the overwhelming perpetrators of Domestic Violence. That is a fact and we cannot continue as men that are the supposed protectors of our families and communities to allow this to happen and to perpetrate its continuing because were generating more perpetrators of Domestic Violence as our sons see our example. Debra alfarone, you were at this News Conference where that powerful call to action was issued. This was near where police sale Frederick Roy miller started his say Frederick Roy miller started his Domestic Violence weekend rampage. We heard all about that in the stories ahead of you. Its just awful. It really is. Its a sad story scott broom just reported, just one of so many stories. You may hear about miller and think its an isolated incident. How could anyone, much less a public official what could anyone, much less a public official have done, to help someone in so much pain that he killed his baby . Leaders say including Angela Alsobrooks and pastors and reverends say it is incumbent on you and me to act and that could save a life. Call 211. Operators can get you the help you need confidentially. If youre in imminent danger, call 911 immediately. Many churches also have counseling and you dont need to be religious or even a member. Another thing. Get the word out they say. Take part in the maryland crime victims fun run october 18th and also alsobrooks said the county will hold a family unity summit in december helping with lots of issues including mental health. We also want people to ask. For help. Theres no shame in asking for help. Theres a Stigma Around Mental Health that has to leave us. There are people who need help and we want not only the women involved in these situations to ask us for help, we want the other, the abusers, ton that we want to help to know that we have want to help them, too. Anyone in imminent danger call 911, but they are trying to do something to stem this violence because it is a really big huge problem in Prince Georges County. As we saw, we just dont want to keep reporting about these terrible things. What it illustrates is its not just happening to a family. Its happening to an entire community. We are all impacted by all of this. Thank you so much. Breaking out in ferguson, missouri, president obama just spoke to the nation about the violence there. Moments ago he announced attorney general eric holder will go to ferguson wednesday as the Justice Department opens a civil rights investigation into the death of Michael Brown. Stephanie ramirez has been monitoring the developments today and joins us with new information on the case coming from both sides. Thats right. Its important to note this information is not coming from public officials. Its coming from private investigators and other people speaking on behalf of both sides which could potentially cause some more problems. This is what ferguson, missouri, looked like for most of the weekend with police again preparing for more unrest only this time the National Guard is there. Also new today cnn is reporting a source identified as josie phoned reporters to give the officers side which depicts the st. Louis teen, Michael Brown, struggling with officer Darren Wilson before his death. The source says after the n the two began brown punched the officer and even grabbed for his gun breaking free after the gun went off once. The caller said wilson apparently began shooting when brown charged the officer after being ordered to freeze. With this information out the unrest could continue in ferguson. Mr. Brown was bending over as they were coming down. Those two shots were most likely the last two to occur. Reporter contradicts a preliminary autopsy done for the brown family where the findings released just this morning found no evidence of brown struggling with the officer before his death. Its now been some nine Straight Days of unrest and at some point heavily violent protests. While i understand the passion and the anger that arise over the Michael Brown. Giving into that anger by looting or carrying guns and even attacking the police only serves to raise tensions and stir chaos. It undermines rather than advancing justice. We know the department of justice is involved, but officials in ferguson say a grand jury could start hearing evidence as early as wednesday to determine if officer wilson should be charged, but theres no timetable how long that could take. Stephanie ramirez, wusa9. The violence in ferguson is halfway across the country, but Young African american men here in our area say theyre as concerned about Police Harassment and bruce leshan brings us that story at 6 00. Just a few showers moving toward the beltway very slowly. This activity is moving so slowly and looks to be driven by the dynamics of the mountains. So i dont think its going to make it over the blue ridge down into the beltway. Look portions of the delmarva. Looking at 9 futurecast where this is going as the nats game is beginning tonight, were still dry at fedex field and the beltway, but the possibility of a sprinkle or shower popping through during that game, we will track that for you. I dont think well see thunderstorms overnight, but there is the potential for showers and thunderstorms for that Tuesday Morning commute. Well talk more about that coming up in the first alert sevenday forecast. In the corruption trial of the mcdonnells embarrassing testimony about an out of control first lady, plus another jury member is gone. Peggy fox joins us live from the richmond courthouse where she has been covering this trial from the very beginning. Reporter it was another awkward day for Maureen Mcdonnell. A former cabinet secretary of Bob Mcdonnell testified today that working for him was an honor of her lifetime, but then she also said she would not want to work for him again unless he fixed his marriage problems. Im just looking forward to eming it the truth. Im really not go telling the truth. Im really not going to answer any questions this morning. Reporter janet kelly, the former secretary of the commonwealth, but an unflattering spotlight on the former first lady. When pressed to describe for Maureen Mcdonnells difficulties, she asked for a be it and became emotional. She said maureen tissue and became emotional. She said Maureen Mcdonnell was very demanding and divaish. She said mrs. Mcdonnell had secretive behavior and was known to hide things. The whole staff asked for the mistreatment to stop in a letter. Kelly argued against giving it to the first lady because she said she was pathologically incapable of taking any responsibility. As a powerful defense witness, she moved the defense claim forward that the mcdonnell marriage was broken. She said that publicly they were very affectionate but that the substance of their marriage didnt seem to back up their affection. On a plane ride kelly said she saw maureen and Jonnie Williams being kind of flirty and very, very friendly, but kelly had unbridled praise of her former boss. I was happy to come in and testify on behalf of the governor. He is a good man. Reporter she called Bob Mcdonnell one of the most honest people i know. She said if people had to elect the boy scout of the year, mr. Honest, it would be him. What about that confidentiality agreement . Reporter the first witness for the defense, a bookkeeper for Bob Mcdonnells relate company, helped the prosecution by testifying that he wasnt told about the Jonnie Williams loan until after the investigation began. Well also heard from three other former cabinet secretaries. They all testified that Star Scientific never received any funding from the state and testified that Bob Mcdonnell could have requested funding for Star Scientific but never mentioned Star Scientific. Now were down to only one alternate due to a fell emergency. Peggy fox, be with family emergency. Peggy fox, wusa9. Joining us now with more on what happened today white collar criminal defense attorney mark shammel and ted kahne. So ill get your summary of the testimony today, but theyre now down to just one alternate juror. When we have talked earlier, you both said that was something concerning to you. Why . Well, if they dont have 12 jurors that start deliberations, that could be a problem. Under the federal rules of criminal procedure there has to be in criminal cases 12 jurors hearing the case. To go to deliberation with less than 12 requires consent of both parties and its unclear whether or not that consent would be given. Concerning . I think the defense might want to Start Playing out the clock a little bit. If youre down to one alternate and throw your defense case. They can drag this out a week or two. People have lives and start things coming up. They lose the jurors, they get a mistrial. I dont see any way the defense will consent to going to deliberations with less than 12. Teds right, they can, but i dont see it. Maybe part of the backdoor strategy is to not have a verdict here and make them come do it all over again. You heard peggys characterization of the testimony today. The defense got to speak. We heard a far different presentation of who the governor is, mr. Honest, boy scout, someone trustworthy but not quite different about the former first lady. What does this do for the narrative weve heard all along, that the marriage was broken, there was no way the two could have conspired . Does this sort of cement what weve heard or does this change it . At the end of the day both the defense and prosecution are jockeying to convince the jury on what their version of the truth is. I think you heard when the prosecution presented their case, there was a conspiracy. Now youre hearing the other side that Maureen Mcdonnell might have been acting alone doing things without the governors knowledge. This plays into what the defense promised they would present evidence of during opening statements, that there was a broken marriage and no conspiracy. Mark . Id go slow if im the defense. You want to be careful not to overplay your hand because at the end of the day they are still a couple and putting on this public face and you think if hes such a boy scout, why is he lying to all the voters that he has a great marriage . Its a very fine line. You dont want to go too far that shes this terrible person because at the end of the day shes his wife. You had a way to sum up this, ted. Comes down to three nos and one yes. No concealment on the part of the mcdonnells, no conspiracy because of the broken marriage and no special treatment or access given to Jonnie Williams of Star Scientific and yes to Bob Mcdonnells good character. Well see if they can prove that case these next couple weeks. Thanks so much for being here. We are just Getting Started here on wusa9 news at 5 00. Were looking good right now even though there is plenty of cloud cover in place, Reagan National airport temperature 82 degrees, dew point 63, so a little more humid than yesterday afternoon, but not as muggy as it could be this time of year. Well see that mugginess increase as we head into tonight and tomorrow. The showers are possible. Youll see them approaching on satellite and radar in a minute. More clouds move in on tuesday. That cloud deck will be pretty thick at times, especially west and south of the beltway. Thats the area where we have the greatest likelihood to see the showers and thunderstorms during the day tuesday. Just isolated in nature in the beltway, i believe, and the unsettled weather remains with us through the workweek. That means well see the chance for thunderstorms every single day this week. Right now it is 81 degrees in manassas and fredericksburg, 82 in martinsburg and leesburg, frederick also 82 degrees. Its 78 now in annapolis. You can see on satellite and radar this is the storm system im talking about. The most concentrated area of rain and thunderstorms will miss us completely to the south. You can see there is moisture behind that leading edge. Thats what well see on 9 futurecast. Youll really see that rotation here within those showers and thunderstorms. The structure of this system pretty easy to see on 9 futurecast. As we head into the Early Morning hours tuesday, some showers are possible as you wake up to watch wusa9 in the morning. As the tail end of the morning rush starts to wrap, well see those showers pushing off to the south and east. A few more rotating in as we head into the noon time hour, that noon time heating helping to aid in the development of some showers, but again it pushes to the south as we head into the evening commute. Wednesday starts dry, more showers and thunderstorms basically west of the 81 corridor, but that same system will push through on thursday producing a threat for more showers and thunderstorms. So you get the deal. We have that threat in the forecast for the next several days. Overnight a passing shower is possible under mostly cloudy skies, lows between 65 and 71 degrees. Tuesday morning temperatures will be in the 60s and 70s with that shower possible but most of us will stay dry until the afternoon. Highs in the mid80s with isolated showers and thunderstorms. When we say isolated, that means a quick hit or miss norm is likely in your neighborhood, but thunderstorm is likely in your neighborhood, but most of us are going to have plenty of dry hours during the day, same thing wednesday, thunderstorms, 88 degrees the high and thursday more widespread showers and storms as the last pocket of Energy Starts to push through leading to drier air in the first alert sevenday forecast. Ponty knit has just the right combination of softness and stretch, but theres a pricey problem with this material that i discovered in my own closet. They fit in all the right places and have taken meorms to charitable events and beyond, but im seeing a good deal of my investment going down the drain in part because of this combination. 78 polyester, 8 rayon, 4 spandex. Those materials form ponty knit, something many of the dresses are being created with these days. In terms of comfort they adjust to figure movement, size and body type. Ponty knit is forgiving, but it can also do this. You can see that there is some pilling under the arms. We see it not just under. We see it essentially over the entire dress. Guanylenwood is the Department Head for jan oldenwood en ellenwood is the president head for the fashion and design university. Pilling occurs when fabric abrads against itself. So that would be under the arm or in a pair of pants between the legs. That happens in the normal course of wearing it. Your arms or legs rub together to create friction that causes a pill to form. It can also be attributed to the quality of the material. Perhaps the fabric chosen wasnt quite the best for the end use. Reporter ellenwood says designers like Eileen Fisher that produce their own fabrics often get a better result. Its thinner than the double knit ponty and has a lot of elasticity. You, too. Well have to deal with a few thunderstorms as we head further into the workweek. Today we got a little reprieve because the thunderstorms that developed were to the south of the d. C. Metro area, but i dont think thats the case for most of the rest of the workweek. With our beautiful shot of the michael and son weather cam well get our weathercast started. Right now it is 82 degrees. It is cloudy at Reagan National airport, but it does appear those clouds are thin enough that were getting some brightening of the sky. The dew point is 63 which is humid enough to be noticeable, but its not so muggy its just hard to be outside. Were not dealing with too much humidity as we head into this afternoon and early evening. Overnight tonight we are going to see cloud cover increase and a shower is possible tonight. I think most of the showers will hold off until very late tonight, early tomorrow morning and tuesday looks like it could be a little on the unsettled side, more cloud arriving and the chance for some isolated showers and storms. That means not everyone is going to see thunderstorms, but if you do have a thunderstorm develop in your neighborhood, it will be short lived. Wednesday well have to deal with the threat for thunderstorms and its going to stay unsettled through the entire workweek. Right now its still 82 degrees in leesburg and frederick, 80 in hagerstown, 78 at andrews and la plata and 81 degrees in fredericksburg. A wide view of satellite and radar shows our approaching storm system. This stationary front that is locked up to the west and southwest of us will continue to waver and possibly produce that chance for some storms, but that area of low pressure near minneapolis is what will finally bring that final push that will get this moisture kicked out of here and give us a better weekend. So 9 futurecast timing out the arrival of our next round of storms. It does look like well see a few spotty showers overnight. As we head towards the Tuesday Morning commute, more showers and thunderstorms will start to spin in from this area of low pressure mainly moving through southern maryland, most of this activity on tuesday staying south of the beltway once again, but in the afternoon we could see more storms west of the beltway and that trend will continue on wednesday. Well have to deal with some storms to the west of the beltway. As we head through the overnight tonight, passing shower possible, 65 to 71 under mostly cloudy skies. Tomorrow morning temperatures in the 60s and 70s. We could see a stray shower under those partly to mostly cloudy skies and in the afternoon mid80s for your highs and we will see the threat for an isolated thunderstorm. Winds will be out of the southeast tomorrow at 5 to 15 miles per hour. Im going to keep green alerts for the next three days because the chance for a thunderstorm doesnt look widespread, but thursday the actual frontal system up in minneapolis will move through. Thats going to bring us some relief as we head into the first alert sevenday forecast. Cooler drier air moves in, on saturday the slightest storm chance, high 82.
